In reply to: antiX Base login to Console/TUI
Memberseaken64
what config file setting tells the system to start with the console/TUI
Open this file in an editor
/etc/inittab
and (at or about line 5 or 6) this is where the default runlevel is specified. This wiki page provides additional details: https://debian-administration.org/article/212/An_introduction_to_run-levels
Thank you for that. I could not make that connection. I found the setting in /etc/inittab. What does “inittab” stand for? Many file names have some reason but I would never figure out inittab to change the runlevel.
And thanks for the link. I read lot of stuff on that site. Eventually led me to finally figuring out how to login remotely to antiX both with VNC and X, and SSH in text mode. Good stuff.

I’ve got a blank screen at boot. From an other thread in this forum I’ve learned to get out of it with Ctrl+Alt+1 and I could see this on the screen after trying to update as per said thread:

by default, the live-USB system contains the “disable=lx” boot code, which prevents certain apps from starting. IIRC, cupsd is one of those apps.
^—– yes, and that (disable=lx by default) has tripped me up occassionally
for reference:
On a live system, you can review the list (legend?) of disable= codes and associated services
sudo cat /live/etc/init.d/live-disable-servicesCan also review the list online https://gitlab.com/antiX-Linux/Live-initrd-1/blob/master/etc/init.d/live-disable-services

Still testing.
The following are my notes so far for the next version gksu changelog.* gksu.c: addresses possibility of arbitrary command injection via subshell ref: CVE-2014-2886 Escape any backtick characters and any left parenthesis characters present within passed string. Guarding left parenthesis also thwarts potential injection of bash_shellfunction_name (somesuch) * DISABLE the option "--print-pass", aka "-p" which would cause gksu to "print the password to stdout, just like ssh-askpass. Useful to use in scripts with programs that accept receiving the password on stdin." Regardless of any use case where this functionality would be necessary, too bad ~~ it also provided opportunity to trick the user into having a cleartext password divulged.Holler if you can mention a “damned good reason” to NOT disable the option

Ok, I fixed the bugs and retested, and added in your WinGrid keys, as well as a couple custom keys that I like. FYI, I REALLY dislike the tiling keys as they just made a total mess of the screen, and even the cascade and arrange did poorly compared to the simplicity of the Wingrid, and to me those other window rearragement keys were more of a RISK than potential benefit, but that’s just my opinion. I think they should be there but commented out,
Try them and let me know what you think?

in forum SoftwareAnonymous
Hello! 🙂
I got a little PC based on a 500Mhz AMD Geode and 256Mb of RAM, my idea is to use it as a FTP server to store songs and other multimedia stuff, for the storage, it got a 500Gb USB Hard Disk and for the boot/OS it has a 4Gb SD USB Card Adapter.
I installed antiX core on it and got ssh acess and vsftpd running perfectly, my problem is that to boot from the USB device, I had to set the BIOS to boot from the “USB Hard Disk”, but the BIOS can’t distinguish between the Hard Disk and the SD Adapter, so every time I shutdown/reboot the system and the boot fails, I had to manually unplug the HD USB cable in order to it boot properly.
I searched the internet but could not find a good way to make the HDD point to the SD Adapter, I tried to “grub-install” to the external HDD but this has no effect at all.
Does someone know a way to do this? It looks like the device it detects first will be the boot device and the first USB port is blocked by the ethernet cable (the big SD card just don’t fit into the space).
Thanks!

I have all the IceWM functions that I need working on my laptop keyboard as well as external keyboard. Hierax-ca can see if I met his needs as well. I would also be willing to help test this when a new version is in process. Here are the helpfile, keys, preferences, and wingrid-centerzoom.sh used:

in forum SoftwareMemberdocop1
Hi
So i’ve try Antix and it’s quite good, but as being from centos.. i found quite painfull to be able to just config a simple vnc server, to run headless. And to have it run / auto start , automatically when the pc is turn on. I know there’s no systemd… but i haven’t found any tutorial to help me out on : how can i have a vnc server run automatically ??I can install x11 from the package and see the gui. But cannot do it run automatic. Is there another package that can be install and always start by itself… ? ssh-conduit is not best either.
thanks in advance

skidoo, Here is the IceWM keyboard shortcuts test results. I only brought up the WinGrid because it was suggested to use it last time I was having problems with the supposedly built in IceWM functions to arrange the windows which my testing showed to not work. Thanks for your time and suggestions. All of the non-working options are commented out in all the other distros I tested (most recent release of each).
I installed Absolute Linux, Debian 9, and OpenSuse Leap 15, Mageia, Slackopup, and Scientific Linux, all with IceWM setup to try to find an IceWM desktop with keyboard shortcuts that work similar to antiX, and few have many keys redefined, none have the window tiling or cascade or window/workspace options for the keys, so I can’t tell if they are is an IceWM issues or not, other than to say all of them also occur on my Dell D620 laptop as well as my HP DV9000 series laptop, with and without external keyboard.
Here are the results of testing all the keys mapped. I wonder if I need to be using a special keyboard somehow for my HP DV9000 series laptop (17″ with separate numeric keypad built in):

Sounds like the problem. I’ll try and see if that will fix it later today.
Thanks much
PS: Yes, that did fix it. I will try the keyboard shortcuts today.
What would be the best key to assign a default desktop Keyboard shortcuts help screen to? The long term goal would be to display the shortcut on the Conky screen and use that same shortcut for all desktops in all languages, and if there was a GUI editor for it, possibly allow it to be edited from there as well. I think that was what skidoo was thinking towards and sounds good to me.
PSS: The scrolling problem is there in Geany but not Firefox where if you click on the scroll bar to move one page up or down, you might go 10 pages instead, and since there are no arrow buttons with this theme (not sure that is caused by theme,IIRC, Metal2 with Crux adds the arrows, but Crux is a sick Purple, so I would need to hand modify the color), you can’t just click and hold those to scroll at a reasonable pace, leaving the only way to do it with a click and drag on the center bar (which isn’t easy with some track pads) or by using the keyboard. Again, I have made no changes here.
Maybe you want to move this thread to Development? We are way out of the realm of “Announcements” at this point. I will be fine if you move it.

Topic: Blank screen at boot
I’ve got a blank screen at boot. From an other thread in this forum I’ve learned to get out of it with Ctrl+Alt+1 and I could see this on the screen after trying to update as per said thread:

Nevertheless, if anyone can easily identify the problem and let me know what to do it’d serve my learning purposes.

Hello!
Thanks!
