        Re FTP Protocol in.[odt|pdf]

The same inaccuracy is present that was pointed out appears in SSH-Conduit Prologue in .[odt|pdf]

To transfer files from your computer to a smartphone or a tablet (as well as between two computers) you can use Droopy very well, in the presence of an internet network to connect to, however we must consider that to carry out its Droopy features need to open port 8800 on the router and firewall…

        That is incorrect.

        • When the Droopy server and client web browser systems are connecting across the internet, a port needs to be opened in the firewall/router fronting the LAN in which the Droopy server is located
        • When the Droopy server and client web browser systems are connecting within the same LAN, a port does not need to be opened in the firewall/router.

Yes, you’re right, what I wrote about ssh-conduit is not correct.
It is not always necessary to open the ports of the router. In fact, you specify:

          • When the SSH server and SSH client systems are connecting accross the internet, a port needs to be opened in the router fronting the LAN in which the SSH server is located
          • When the SSH server and client systems are connecting within the same LAN, a port does not need to be opened in the router.

Ok, I am sorry for the error, I’m not a technician and I wrote this post in speed.
This aspect that you have specified has not been left out in the Italian translation and moreover the preamble I inserted reiterates it again.
The problem is that the translation of all the FAQ chapters took me several months, so when I translated this chapter and made some tests it was clear to me, but from that moment it passed a few months and I can not remember the details.
But the problem remains. If a user is not very expert he feels the need for some additional information, or at least I have felt this need.
You have pointed out to me that the ssh-conduit Faqs say precisely that you need to open the router’s ports when needed. Ok, there is nothing inaccurate in the faq, I apologize if I did understand this, but I believe that these faq become more complete and more tailored to normal user if when you say to a user who must open the doors of a router you also give him some instructions on how to do it.
However you decide, I wanted to add this addition in the Italian translation, but in the official faq it’s your job to decide whether it has a utility or not. I have made the effort to translate it into English in the spirit of collaborating and making myself useful.

Thanks for trying to help with your translation. I cannot read Italian so this feedback relates only to your forum post in an attempt to help you effort.

Unfortunately the following is not entirely accurate.

Ssh-Conduit is an application that allows the sharing of files and folders remotely, like other applications that do the same thing, needs to open some ports of the router. In Ssh-conduit’s Faq this is not specified because it is probably assumed that the user knows it.
Certainly advanced users know this, but after reading the Faq indications I tried to use Ssh-conduit without success until I realized I had to open the router’s doors. For that I thought it would be useful to add a preamble explaining port-forwarding with a description of a way to open a port on the router.

Ssh-Conduit is an application that allows the sharing of files and folders remotely, like other applications that do the same thing, needs to open some ports of the router.

              That is not correct.
              • When the SSH server and SSH client systems are connecting accross the internet, a port needs to be opened in the router fronting the LAN in which the SSH server is located
              • When the SSH server and client systems are connecting within the same LAN, a port does not need to be opened in the router.

In Ssh-conduit’s Faq this is not specified [when port forwarding is and is not needed]…

It is but you may have overlooked it.

In the antiX FAQ→SSH-Conduit User Guide→Suite Characteristics Section

When accessing remote resources across the internet:
              • The remote firewall/router must previously have been set up to forward a port to the system within the remote LAN on which the SSH server daemon is running
              • The forwarded port number may be any available number you choose to use

Note: Each firewall/router handles port forwarding in its own way, this means there is no single description that can cover all variations. You should refer to the user manual to do the setting up.

Tip: If you are accessing remote resources across a local network rather than the internet, there is no need to forward a port from the firewall to the system on which SSH is running. In that case, both systems must be in the same local network i.e. behind the same LAN firewall/router.

I wrote in this tread that in the antix 17 faq translated into Italian I inserted, or enlarged, three chapters. I explained why I thought it was useful to add these parts.
Now, through this tread, I want to share this additional work that I did so that who manages the antiX documentation (skidoo, anti, I think) can evaluate if they can be useful, totally or in part, even for the documentation in English.

I wrote these texts in Italian and then translated them into English. They are in a scholastic English and surely there are errors and inaccuracies. Clearly, if you think it is a useful document, some native English speakers will have to correct them.

                These 3 documents are:

a “prologue” paragraph to be inserted before the beginning of the SSH-Conduit chapter
a new chapter concerning the sharing between phone and PC through the FTP protocol
a totally rewritten chapter about the SpaceFM File Manager

The two chapters on the FTP protocol and on SpaceFM have been imagined and written by me, and the images are photos from my desktop, with the exception of the fourth and fourteenth pictures.
These 2 images are taken from the web. The photos of my desktop are free of copyright but clearly the menu items that you see are in Italian, so in an English version they probably are not good.

About the prologue of SSH-Conduit, it is not a text wrote by me. This is an article in Italian taken from the web. It is an article that is licensed under a Creative Commons License, non-commercial sharing, and sharing with reference to the author of the article.
In the Italian version of the antiX FAQs I modified it a bit and I left the images of the original article, then I added the reference to the author with the link to the web address.
If you decide to use it in the English version then I believe that you do not need to insert the reference to the author of the article because it has already been changed by me and also is translated into another language, but the images (there are only two) should certainly be changed .

Again, about SpaceFM I wrote a very extensive guide, about 20 pages, so as it is I do not think it is suitable to be used in the original English faq.
In Italian, even if it is a bit too large can be good in my opinion because the user manual of spaceFM by IgnorantGuru is too extensive and impractical for an Italian user if he is not an expert connoisseur of English, so it would be difficult to use that resource . For an English user the IgnorantGuru manual can be practical and does not need a digest if this is too long.
But some things I wrote could be useful. For example there is a paragraph that might be of interest to many users about adding a trash.

                    I have translated the antiX 17 Faq ( https://download.tuxfamily.org/antix/docs-antiX-17/FAQ/index.html ) into Italian:
I used DropBox for sharing. You can view and download them in ODT format and in PDF format. These are the links:

Faq antiX 17 in italiano in formato .odt : https://www.dropbox.com/s/q34m30j9t1rn6ye/FaqAntixIta.odt?dl=0

Compared to the original English Faq I have included an introduction to the SSH-Conduit Faq, I have deepened the chapter about SpaceFM and added a chapter about the shares via FTP protocol.

Regarding the FTP protocol, I preferred to give some guidance and advice through a specific chapter, because I realized that a user who uses antiX as main computer, or with a certain frequency, will certainly need it. This is because every time an antiX user needs to transfer files from a smartphone to the computer or vice versa, it will be difficult to do so using a usb/micro-usb cable, because the MTP protocol is poorly supported by minimal Desktop environments such as those used by antiX.

Then I enlarged the section about SpaceFM, because in the Faq of antiX was really small, but this File Manager has really many possibilities and interesting features that are worth knowing, also considering that antiX uses desktop environments that are the result of the interaction between a Window Manager and a File Manager, where one of the two File Managers provided by antiX is SpaceFM (the other is Rox).

I wrote these three additions in Italian and translated them into English, so who handle the antiX documentation can view them to decide if they can be integrated into the official FAQs.
I will attach the three translations text in a tread specifically dedicated to them.

I got the screen saver itself working pretty well now. Need to work on the web browser idea more and create modularized scripts and the directory processor. Here is a high speed video of it and the script used to create it thus far. The scripts for the weather related pages are in the recent conky thread.

posting video from phone will add script here. My apologies to 736, i have to come back to the python later after I have this working...

I have a similar one. It’s white, though, and only has 500 Mb of RAM. I bought it back in the days (ca.2009) as a stop gap for a laptop that broke. All it was supposed to be was a glorified typewriter to take notes while doing research in a library for my master thesis. And it worked ok.

Over the past few years I tried to update it to different Linux versions, as I wasn’t quite happy with the one it came with (it didn’t come with Windows XP). I tried many different ones over the years. It was kind of a toy then to try new things out. I always had problems with it freezing at some point when using a desktop environment.

I tried to install antiX-base and antiX-full. With both I had the same problem, that, at the end of installation, the generation of logins wouldn’t work. I was able to repair the root login with RescuTux, but the desktop environment seems wrong. It doesn’t look like the default, but more primitive. Also, I get an error message about a login failure when I first boot up. I guess this error has something to do with the installation not working out properly.

So, I opted with giving up on antiX with desktop environments, as the only thing I would want to use a desktop environment for is browsing the interwebs. And with the amount of RAM I have, it won’t be possible really to do so on the websites I want to use anyway, namely web clients of email services. Almost everything else I want to do with it — mostly writing, really, and making first steps with ssh — I can do on the console. And antiX takes away one of the biggest pains with just being in the console by providing great tools, especially ceni, which is really awesome! So, for now, I’m experimenting with antiX core on this machine.

One major issue I have, though, is the lack of manpages. Is there a way to download them? Could I download them for all the packages or maybe only coreutils? (I don’t need the GCC docs, though, and I heard it’s a lot of stuff they have there.) Or maybe just for the most important programs I use (rsync, tar, vim …)? If anyone can point me in the right direction, I would be pleased.

I finally did a build up from core, I used IceWM and roaming WiFi. I did it on the old Dell D620. I should be able to get memory used to about 65.0 mb. I’m at 71.0 mb now, but that’s using Xterm and 5 getty sessions, no Conky, no Background. I just wanted to see if I could get it to work…

I didn’t have major problems. The worst problem was getting X to run when not root, needing to add 2 lines to /etc/X11/Xrapper.config.

I will see if I can get the history and a memory readout next time I bring up the browser. I suppose its not totally realistic with no conky or screensaver, but it was quite an adventure to get it loaded and get X windows to come up and work.

So what did I install on top of core? I use a program called comm to compare the antix install list to a current list, and what wasn’t there in core is listed here. My notes say I should (ie untested at this point) be able to process add list onto a core install with:
                            xargs -a pkgschgd.add.txt apt-get install`

Too bad I haven’t been able to figure out how to port ksnakeduel to a non-kde environment. It really brought a lot in with it. But I like playing it, oh well.

Menus are working, but many programs aren’t on them. Haven’t investigated that, yet.

I don’t like the standard theme, wish I had my rollup shade windows, oh well.

Anyway, for one evening’s work I did fairly well…

Anyone know a way to take this list and remove from it all the packages required by any other on the list?

Hold on, yet another Debian upgrade to openssh will bring in libsystemd0.
Wait for our nosystemd version to hit the repos.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

These have been recently added to the Debian sid repos and contain libsystemd0

                                openssh
                                procps
                                cups

These have been recently added to Debian Testing repos and contain libsystemd0 and wants to remove stuff

                                cups
                                policykit-1

Just wait for the nosystemd versions to appear in the repos.

Notice my backup < named grub.bkup > ? I backup certain files right after a install. Just habit now. I don’t dual boot anymore either, Though I used to be a grub4dos fanatic years ago.

Now I just swap out hard drives instead of editing grub. Takes me about 5 minutes. You might want to start a thread in New Users for your grub problem.
