Hi, I’ve never done any hardening.
antiX is based on Debian, thus it is possible that some of the hardening steps may be transferable from antiX to Debian (unless they explicitly involve the init ‘systemd’).
– Close unused ports.
– Disable ping response of your antiX.
– Some people change default SSH port to reduce risk of successful attacks.
– Consider using ‘fail2ban’.
– Consider using ‘firejail’.

I would advice against reducing time in boot-up options (significantly); use-case: if you install a new kernel and it does not work, then you may wish to select an older one to boot into instead of the last installed that does not work; a timer too short may make that hard to achieve.

antiX-22 is a new release update of our 21 series based on Debian bullseye.

As usual we offer the following completely systemd-free and for this particular upgrade – elogind-free flavours for both 32 and 64 bit architecture. Available iso files for sysVinit or runit.

antiX-full (c1.4GB) – 4 windows managers – IceWM (default), fluxbox, jwm and herbstluftwm plus full libreoffice suite.

antiX-base (c800MB) – 4 windows managers – IceWM (default), fluxbox, jwm and herbstluftwm.

antiX-core (c460MB) – no X, but should support most wireless.

antiX-net (c180MB)- no X. Just enough to get you connected (wired) and ready to build. (NOTE – to connect to the Internet, you might need to type as root user dhclient eth0 or eth1)

The 32 bit version uses a non-pae kernel.

This is predominantly an update of our last release (antiX-21), but with a newer 4.9.0-326 kernel, latest 3 series IceWM, latest firefox-esr 102.3 (full), seamonkey 2.53.14 (base), improved localisation and fixed deb archive keys.

mps-youtube has been removed since it doesn’t seem to work anymore.
Sakis3G replaces modem-manager(gui).

NOTE: elogind, libpam-elogind and libelogind0 have also been removed.
Instead we use seatd and consolekit.

Many upstream core Debian packages have been rebuilt to remove a hard dependency on libsystemd0/libelogind0
These include apt, cups, dbus, gvfs, openssh, policykit-1, procps, pulseaudio, rpcbind, rsyslog, samba, sane-backends, udisks2, util-linux, webkit2gtk and xorg-server

Those using previous versions of antiX-21 do not need to download this new version. Simply upgrade via apt or synaptic.

1) How do you specify *doing nothing* (in terms of user input, internet activity, HDD/SDD activity, some program [not-]running)?
E.g. what if a download/file-transfer is running (download using browser, curl/wget or via SSH) or an audio/visual file is being played.
Does this count or not?

2) Suspending not working:
What does not work? I.e. what do you do, what do you expect and what do you get?

Sometimes, I search for an issue using keywords describing the issue and adding ‘Debian’ or ‘Ubuntu’ since antiX, similarly to *buntu, is Debian based.
Of course, not all the tips are applicable to antiX and, as always, to be used with great care.

‘pm-utils’ and ‘lid’ may be packages to check for.

3) Laptop battery usage may benefit from packages such as ‘tlp’ and ‘laptop-mode-tools’.
Using one of them may have its downsides, I think the latter used to turn off some not used HW ports/”devices” causing wi-fi issues.

For some reason, the problem occurred with the 4.19 kernel as well today morning after a reboot from Windows 10 (which adjusted the time +2 hours as seen in logs in antiX).
Power down and clean-boot to 4.9 (I keep a lots of series of kernels) solved it.
Girlfriend reported no such issue yesterday evening (boot from power down using kernel 4.19).

I rebooted (via ‘sudo reboot’) from the 4.9 to 4.19, login does not work again.
I tried to type in login, Enter, password, Enter – nothing.
Power down and clean-boot to 4.19 and it works again.
For some reason, reboot seems to be related the issue.

When I disconnect and reconnect the keyboard, the diodes briefly light up, hence I do not believe power/contact issue is the cause (unlike the mouse issue I reported in the past…).
The problem is hard to debug since I cannot log in.

SERVICES:
Running services (and I did press white-space to have the read-out complete):
service --status-all 2>/dev/null | grep ' \[ + \] '

Cannot reproduce this either.
I used antiX-21-core (32bit), did an apt update and apt dist-upgrade
Then apt install ssh

Make sure all your repos are working.

Aeons ago I ran in to a version conflict with open ssh. was able to fix with below method.
No warranty as months ago. :-). That was on antiX 21.

sudo apt-get remove openssh-server openssh-client --purge && sudo apt-get autoremove && sudo apt-get autoclean && sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install openssh-server openssh-client
```

Hi sybok,
thanks for info, the jsshelter project announced that the project
was coming to an end, no commits in last two months make it look like that
has definitely happened. Sounded interesting in approaches, maybe we can
watch for a fork or other signs of further support and development.

Today I installed Antix 21 on an old HP thinclient. Long time ago I successfully installed and run (for years!) AntiX 13.2 on this hardware and today I tried to repeat the success with AntiX 21.

The install (core system, I use it as a headless server) went smoothly, no problems encountered, even the post-install “apt-get update – apt-get upgrade” went well.

Then as the first step, I tried to install an ssh server on the machine, when I encountered an unresolvable error.

apt-get install ssh (and openssh-server as well) gave the following error message:

“Unresolvable dependency: openssh-client depends on libfido2-1 (>=1.5.0) but it is not installable. E: the problem can’t be resolved.” – or something like that, the error message was translated to my locale and I tried to re-translate it back to English.

How could I resolve an unresolvable error?

Hello,

I am using AntiX 19.4 – 64 Bit, with icewm with the theme Blue-Day-Small.

I want to change the font of the ‘CPUStatusShowAcpiTempInGraph’. It is too big and I want it a bit smaller to better fit inside the cpu statusbar at the bottom right of my taskbar.

I looked in:

.icewm/prefoverrides
.icewm/preferences
/usr/share/icewm/themes/BlueDay-Small/default-theme
/etc/X11/icewm

I tried the following lines:

QuickSwitchFontNameXft = “ubuntu:size=7,Sans:size=6″
Name of the status display font.
StatusFontNameXft=”monospace:size=5:bold”
StatusFontName=”-*-monospace-bold-r-*-*-*-20-*-*-*-*-*-*”

Also tried ‘Look and feel’ and ‘Qt5 settings’.

I managed to change pretty much every thing I wanted from font size, title bar height, keys, etc. The only thing I can’t is to change the size (or type) of the font in CPUStatusShowAcpiTempInGraph. I can’t find an option to manipulate.

Ideas and thoughts about this issue are welcomed.

Also, is there any other way to have my cpu temperature on my taskbar? I remember back on the Lubuntu 15 days to have that feature.

update of its oldstable distribution Debian 10 (codename “buster”). This
point release mainly adds corrections for security issues, along with a
few adjustments for serious problems. Security advisories have already

After this point release, Debian’s Security and Release Teams will no
longer be producing updates for Debian 10. Users wishing to continue to
receive security support should upgrade to Debian 11, or see

architectures and packages covered by the Long Term Support project.

Please note that the point release does not constitute a new version of
Debian 10 but only updates some of the packages included. There is no
need to throw away old “buster” media. After installation, packages can

Those who frequently install updates from security.debian.org won’t have
to update many packages, and most such updates are included in the point
release.

New installation images will be available soon at the regular locations.

sybok, You bring up things… Some that I don’t use or understand. That is a good thing because it might avoid design errors that cause problems later.

1. I tried doing it with one running script, but when run from root cron (needed to perform emergency shutdown), no YAD warnings get displayed, and only spoken warnings are played, not sound files. I settled on a user cron warning script, and root cron emergency shutdown script, both based on the same code. That isn’t as efficient, but easily allows for critical errors to be global, and users to set their own warning levels.
2. Normally I would say the defaults should originate from /etc/skel and copy to each user, but when to perform an emergency shutdown is a system wide affecting task, therefore maybe /etc/defaults might be better. I wonder where other power utilities store their settings? I am putting the logs in /tmp, but I hadn’t worried about if othewrs could access it.
3. SSH, sorry hadn’t considered it, because I don’t know much about it other than that its a communication method that allows remote access.
nd1. antiX is multiuser, therefore the warning must either go to all users or at least the user running the warning script
4. VNC is another unknown for me.

I’ll post the current code. I had incorporated many of your previous suggestions. I do appreciate the suggestions as I’m learning as I go. The code is working at this point, but hard coded.

PS: I haven’t got it loading at boot, automatically yet

That reminds me of a topic with @ModdIt where he/we tried to make ‘/etc/hosts’ per user. Some multi-user issues were encountered. I do not know what is the current status (got out of touch).

1) I assume that the suggested “split” would mean the following two items apply:
A) common global configuration (better be placed in a configuration file so that upgrade asks whether to overwrite any local changes)
B) local configuration for non-critical warnings per user that each corresponding user can edit.

– How does the script recognize which local/user configuration is to be loaded? Test for user/users that is/are logged in.
– Does remote access e.g. via SSH apply? (How to display the warning in this case?)
– What if multiple users are logged in? E.g. a local user and a remote VNC user; is there any preference or does it run for all logged-in users that have the local configuration file?

2) Single script or two scripts?
I believe that a single script is better option.
One can define functions in it and have it structured e.g. as follows:

3) Where does it log in the case of multiple users? Should the file be readable by all/other users?

4) BTW, I have discovered a tool ‘shellcheck’ that performs syntax check of your scripts.
It can provide useful hints but sometimes its suggestions to double-quote variables to avoid expansion can cause troubles.

I usually output the results of the analysis into a file as follows ‘j=script.sh; shellcheck “$j” > “shell_$j”‘.
