In reply to: Monitor Randomly Not Getting Input

It’s definitely not anti-X, because I’ve been trying out a different OS (Lubuntu) for the past few weeks. But I’m wondering if it’s possibly a linux issue
Did you hint that the same issue would also happen when using Lubuntu?
this problem … it stopped happening for a while. It’s only happened maybe once in the last two weeks or so, until it happened twice tonight in rapid succession again.
Once it happens, I can’t do anything about it. The keyboard and (as far as I can tell) the mouse are completely non-functional. The machine won’t respond to any commands.
It is always while I am watching videos. All of a sudden the screen says “No Input” and goes blank. I can still hear the audio of the video, which will play for a few minutes after the screen stops working. Then a few seconds of the audio starts looping, as if the video is skipping like a broken record, then it goes silent and nothing happens anymore. The machine is still running, but the screen is gone and nothing works, so my only option is to hold down the power button until it shuts off.
I don’t have an answer either, but since I stumble upon your post, I want to share my experience.
1. I encountered similar problems on my Thinkpad X60 and T61p. But the issue happened so rarely – perhaps once per several weeks or even months – so I was not able to recognize a pattern, let alone to reproduce it.
2. When the monitor goes blank, it is unlikely to be a monitor hardware issue, because my Thinkpad laptop’s built-in monitor and the external monitor BOTH go blank. So, it seems more like an issue on the Linux side, which somehow cuts off the video output. (My same Thinkpad X60 was running Windows for years and never encountered such an issue.)
3. When the monitor goes blank, it is not the normal screen blank kicking in, otherwise you would be able to turn it back on after you move the mouse or type some keys. Besides, I also tried setting the screen blank timer to 1 minute, and watch some youtube video. It seems the desktop environment is smart enough to NOT turn off my screen when I’m watching video.
4. That being said, the issue MIGHT still be triggered by the blank screen timer, because I habitually keep my daily driver powered on 7×24, and the issue – when it happens – tends to be discovered when I came back the next day trying to wake up my computer but it remained blank.
5. When the monitor goes blank, the mouse and keyboard were not able to wake up the screen, but they might still be able to generate input, it is just that we can not see its effect via screen. So, the recovery method has always been perform a power-off and then power-on. However, when the latest incident happened at months ago on my Thinkpad T61p, I happened to notice that, albeit losing screen output and possibly also the keyboard and mouse input, my T61p actually remains functioning, because I can use “ssh” to login to it remotely from my another computer. So, as a weird experiment, I keep it running, and use it that way. Now, my T61p remains on for 281 days, and still counting. Just so you know, the issue was really just affecting the video sub-system, not the entire Linux.
Just FWIW.

@blur13 – easy as pie- here’s an example:
curl wttr.in/?format="Sunrise:++%s"|cut --complement -c 16-20
This cuts the characters 16 to 20 from the end of the outputb. You’ll have to adapt that to the Zenith and Sunset results (because the text has a different number of characters).
if you want everything displayed on the same line, just import the results of this command to variables, then echo everthing in one go:
Example:sunrise=$(curl wttr.in/?format="Sunrise:++%s"|cut --complement -c 16-20) zenith=... sunset= ... echo $sunrise $zenit $sunsetThat’s all little “grasshopper”

I’m writing to share a workaround.
In my setup, both my guest OS and the host OS are antiX. When I attempted the “Insert Guest Additions CD image…” operation, it failed with an error
Unable to insert the virtual optical disk /usr/share/virtualbox/VBoxGuestAdditions.iso into the machine ... Could not mount the media/drive '/usr/share/virtualbox/VBoxGuestAdditions.iso' (VERR_PDM_MEDIA_LOCKED). Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005) ...That error was the same as this post, which also mentioned a possible reason “VERR_PDM_MEDIA_LOCKED, means something already resides in the drive and is locked so you can not add another until you remove what is there already”. That is likely the case, because my Guest OS was not a fully-installed antiX, I was merely booting the VM from an antiX CD iso for some quick experiment. That forum post was very long. I did not dig deeper. I ended up with a simpler alternative.
The alternative:
1. Verify that the guest OS can do “ssh your_username@the_ip_of_host”
2. Now, use the gFTP client which is shipped with antiX full version, connect to your host OS’s IP, and choose “SSH2” (instead of the default “FTP”) as the protocol.
3. There is no step 3. Now the gFTP already connected your host and guest. The file transfer speed between them feels equally fast as ftp!December 29, 2021 at 4:13 am #74010In reply to: FTP for new antiX user

vsftpd (Very Secure FTP Daemon) is a lightweight FTP server.
to install vsftpd:
<span class=”d4pbbc-font-color” style=”color: green”>sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install vsftpd</span>
The installer immediately starts the vsftpd server, listening on TCP port 21.
As a post-installation step, I recommend manually calling
<span class=”d4pbbc-font-color” style=”color: green”>sudo service vsftpd stop</span>
and don’t restart the vsftpd service until you have tweaked its configuration options.to configure vsftpd:
(beforehand, make a backup copy of the pristine conf)
<span class=”d4pbbc-font-color” style=”color: green”>sudo cp /etc/vsftpd.conf /etc/vsftpd.conf_ORIG</span>
Use leafpad, or other text editor, to edit the configuration file:
<span class=”d4pbbc-font-color” style=”color: green”>gksu leafpad /etc/vsftpd.conf</span>To learn about ALL available configuration options, you can <span class=”d4pbbc-font-color” style=”color: green”>man vsftpd.conf</span>
In the meantime, the following changes to the default, as-shipped, configuration parameters will get you up-and-running:<span class=”d4pbbc-font-color” style=”color: blue”>listen=YES
listen_ipv6=NO
local_enable=YES</span> (refers to users in /etc/passwd , i.e. user accounts on the same machine the vsftpd server is running on)
<span class=”d4pbbc-font-color” style=”color: blue”>write_enable=YES</span> (this line is outcommented by default)
<span class=”d4pbbc-font-color” style=”color: blue”>idle_session_timeout=9999</span> (default is 600)
<span class=”d4pbbc-font-color” style=”color: blue”>#ascii_upload_enable=YES</span> (your call, uncomment if desired/needed)
<span class=”d4pbbc-font-color” style=”color: blue”>#ascii_download_enable=YES</span> (your call, uncomment if desired/needed)
<span class=”d4pbbc-font-color” style=”color: blue”>chroot_local_user=NO</span> (your call, you decide)
<span class=”d4pbbc-font-color” style=”color: blue”>#utf8_filesystem=YES</span> (your call, uncomment if desired/needed)After editing /etc/vsftpd.conf, save the file and exit text editor, then start the vsftpd service (aka daemon):
<span class=”d4pbbc-font-color” style=”color: green”>sudo service vsftpd start</span>
and you can immediately log into your vsftp server=================
followup considerations:
If you find that you’re unable to connect, check whether firewall service is running: <span class=”d4pbbc-font-color” style=”color: green”>sudo ufw status</span>
Until you configure suitable firewall rules, you may need to “sudo service ufw stop”
in order to connect to the vsftpd server.(optional, but recommended) “apt-get install install fail2ban”, read the manpage, then configure and enable it.
After stopping the vsftpd service, if you run the “htop” command and notice any still-running vsftpd processes
you can “sudo killall vsftpd” to get rid of them. (I don’t know why the lingering processes sometimes occur, but they do.)Can use the <span class=”d4pbbc-font-color” style=”color: green”>vsftpwho</span> to check whoall is currently connected to the vsftpd server.
If you do, undertand that it’s normal to find one connection listed which is attributed to “root”.
(misleading, and is a potential cause of worry.)If you search/read any additional online vsftpd tutorials, ignore any references to “systemctl” (systemd service manager)
I know this is an old thread, but I just want to share how I ended up with a simpler alternative.
It turns out, we do not have to install and setup an FTP server, which is a nontrivial task detailed by @skidoo’s answer above. Nowadays some ftp clients – such as the gFTP shipped in antiX full version – allow you to connect to an “ftp server” via SSH protocol. So, if your antiX server happens to already have sshd up and running (which should be reasonably easy to setup), you can have your ftp client connects to your antiX server via SSH. The transmission speed is still fast.

Thanks for info Dave, may I be so cheeky and ask for example here, this is especialy good clearing temporary files, cache files, and saving.
Basically the same as the snapshot excludes is a good place to start. Keep in mind that whatever you add will increase the shutdown/logout time. So if you have multiple GB worth of cached data, you will probably want to remove them manually the first time. Then with regular use (multiple logouts/logins) it should be kept small enough not to cause a significant speed problem. Another way is to move them to a trash location rather than remove them; then remove them when you do not mind waiting.
$ cat ./shutdown rm -r $HOME/.cache/mozilla/30as99eb.Junk rm -r $HOME/.mozilla/firefox/30as99eb.Junk cp -r $HOME/.mozilla/clean/30as99eb.Junk $HOME/.mozilla/firefox/30as99eb.Junk rm -r $HOME/.cache/mozilla/f74jq05y.Default rm -r $HOME/.mozilla/firefox/f74jq05y.Default cp -r $HOME/.mozilla/clean/f74jq05y.Default $HOME/.mozilla/firefox/f74jq05y.Default rm -r $HOME/.cache/chromium rm -r $HOME/.config/chromium rm $HOME/.config/hexchat/logs rm $HOME/.bash_history rm $HOME/.lesshst rm $HOME/.python_history rm $HOME/.local/share/recently-used.xbel rm $HOME/.local/share/Trash rm $HOME/.Trash #mv $HOME/.xsession-errors $HOME/.desktop-session/xsession-errors-$(date +"%Y-%m-%d_%H-%M") rm $HOME/.xsession-errorsAnother thing to note (That I am not sure is common knowledge):
After you are happy with your startup / shutdown files you may wish to make them immutable.
Log in as root in the users ~.desktop-session directory and runchmod 544 shutdown && chattr +i shutdown chmod 544 startup && chattr +i startupThen when you need to make an edit
chattr -i shutdown && chmod 744 shutdown chattr -i startup && chmod 744 startupOf course you can leave the permissions at 744 and only make it immutable instead.
This prevents someone pulling a prank on you and adding a nasty rm -r $HOME when you are not looking. Unless they know your root login in which case you have bigger problems (or your user password depending on sudo configuration).- This reply was modified 1 year, 4 months ago by Dave.

Hi antiX community.
Over the years I’ve become accustomed (addicted?) to using a twin-panel file manager. In recent years my choice had been ‘Krusader’; Indeed that’s why I use MX-KDE as my main distribution.
On a low-resource system, antiX(21) is more appropriate. I’m reluctant to install Krusader and bring all its ‘foreign’ KDE libraries on board, so I’m looking for an alternative. For now, I have installed ‘Sunflower‘ (with some difficulty). This works but lacks some features that I love in Krusader, e.g. the ability to create symbolic links by dragging and dropping. I’m not too worried about network functionality. I intend to handle that with sshfs via command line or /etc/fstab.
I’m not averse to writing python plugins for Sunflower but – being eternally lazy – would prefer a a ready made alternative. Any suggestions, anyone?

– Which major apps are known to install the said *elogind*.
– Considering some major apps install *elogind* during their installation, then if they are installed after the above cleanup then subsequent running the above purge *elogind* will bring antiX back to ‘clean’ state. If this is true, then why a need for rebuilding some Debian packages to not include *elogind*? Is it not simpler to run the above purge instead for those interested, keeping packages intact? This is just for my understanding…
Thanks and regards…Here are a few examples.

antiX-21 (Grup_Yorum) is based on Debian Bullseye and is fully systemd-free.
As usual we offer the following systemd-free flavours for both 32 and 64 bit architecture, running sysVinit or runit. The 32 bit versions use a non-pae kernel.
antiX-full (c1.4GB) – 4 windows managers – IceWM (default), fluxbox, jwm and herbstluftwm plus full libreoffice suite. x64 versions come with 2 kernels. Legacy 4.9 and Modern 5.10
antiX-base (<<800MB – fits on 800MB cd) – 4 windows managers – IceWM (default), fluxbox, jwm and herbstluftwm.
antiX-core (c440MB) – no X, cli-installer without encryption, but should support most wireless.
antiX-net (c180MB)- no X, cli-installer without encryption. Just enough to get you connected (wired) and ready to build. For experts.
Note 1: runit editions now set up in a similar way to Void/Artix.
Users should be prepared to familiarize themselves with how runit services workNote 2: After installation of antiX-21_x64-full editions, the default kernel will be the Modern 5.10 one even if Legacy 4.9 was booted during the live boot.

At some point I used nomachine to do this, installing and activating the service on antiX and the client on Windows. I think there is an in house app in antiX for remote desktop, but I was only able to get it to work properly between linux systems.

Topic: twin-panel filemanager
