I have a new (to me) Lenovo T520. It has a 1T drive. I used Windows 10 while installing it to Partition the drive to 2 500g partitions. (I usually dual boot with 2 separate drives) Currently W10 is updating and I have yet to install MX-17. Will this install be the same as if I have 2 different drives? What shall I format the 2nd partition to EXT4 ? Do I install the boot record to the Windows boot partition or MX-17 root?
I usually format to EXT4 and make:
      20G Root Partition
8g swap (it has 8g of ram)
      the rest as Home

Also keep in mind that for any system configuration where you are effectively performing a “snapshot”, saving the entire ” system context” it means that you need space large enough to save the entire operating system – the kernel, core utilities, and running processes. For suspend and hibernate to work properly, “swap” space MUST be AT LEAST twice the size of memory. If you have 16 GB memory, make your swap partition 32 GB.

Note that if you don’t use hibernate or suspend and you have ample memory, these days you can actually get away with minimal, if any, swap space. Today’s swap is primarily used for suspend and hibernate system events.

I’m no expert, but I don’t see anything wrong with the code above. I fixed the Hibernate to work on mine.

I forget if suspend needs a swap partition…

You could look in /var/log/pm-suspend.log for clues as to why suspend didn’t complete.

An idea would be to reconfigure or reinstall pm-utils

          dpkg-reconfigure pm-utils

          or if that doesn’t work

          apt-get install –reinstall pm-utils

PS:Another package, the one that includes desktop-session-exit.py that calls desktop-session-exit is desktop-session-antix.
PSS: When i said the file looked ok, I was referring to the 2nd one that looked normal. Not sure what happened to the 1st one or what effects it would have.

                Hello All,

One of my AntiX laptops (the one that is running x64) has had sysV init removed and systemd installed. This laptop is using the ‘testing’ repo.

                First some stats:

Upon doing a ‘apt-get dist-upgrade’, I noticed that sysVinit was going to be removed and systemd installed but I caught this too late and the update completed.

How do I undo this? Is it as simple as removing systemd and re-installing sysVinit?

                TIA

Firefox ESR worked OK, but definitely consumed a lot of CPU and memory resources on this system – an “oldie” that fits right into the kinds of systems we “specialize in”.

With the current Firefox release – Firefox 61.0, resource usage is still pretty high, around 202MB resident memory when 61 is running, though the system “runs” OK.

I’ll update this note a few times with stats from other browser releases.

We actually appear to be using somewhat fewer resources with Firefox ESR: around 161 MB resident memory usage, but momentary CPU usage does appear to be spiking closer to the 90-95% range for brief moments with this browser, and only a terminal running to monitor.

                  More to come…

Seamonkey definitely seems to be a bit easier on antiX than either the ESR or current releases of Firefox. A lot of these details can vary by the moment, but for some snapshot figures, CPU usage with Seamonkey was hovering around 50% when active, and memory usage, though not “low”, was somewhat contained, holding under 200 MB. I saw some figures between 170 MB and 180 MB when the browser first started using this page.

Palemoon and Seamonkey both seem to start up with moderate resource usage. I didn’t check Seamonkey quite as quickly as Palemoon. For Palemoon, it was consuming moderate CPU and memory, under 50% CPU and under 170 MB until entering this forum and updating this note, at which time the observed memory usage jumped. I still noticed memory usage not much over 180 MB – again difficult to isolate without a tool that collects ongoing stats, but CPU also remained in check. I saw it over 70% but not much higher, except for very brief spikes.

Both Palemoon and Seamonkey easily consume fewer resources (on average in this admittedly limited test sample).

Just got back in here with Flashpeak Slimjet. It was difficult to tell what was going on because the system became fairly unresponsive on this OLD hardware with this browser. On my Dell Inspiron 5558 – hardly a NEW laptop, but well over a decade NEWER than this wonderful, but very aged old Dell Latitude D610, Flashpeak Slimjet performs very well. On the D610, it seems to overwhelm the system for a few moments, making everything slow and unresponsive. I couldn’t find any particular instance or thread of Slimjet consuming much over 120 MB, but this browser is multi-threaded. I did (when I was able to switch display windows quickly enough), able to find a few instances of this configuration pegging the CPU usage). Due to unresponsiveness, I was unable to see CPU usage over 95%, nor high memory or swap usage, but I suspect it was there. Can’t recommend Slimjet for old systems, though I like it on newer hardware. I suspect other Chrome-based solutions to cause similar issues under very heavy loads, but good performance if isolated and a lot of memory is available.

                      Hi,
I bought a used HP Mini 2133 because it was cheap and I needed a Mini laptop.
I already downloaded some light distributions for an other old computer.
So, I tested a few distributions with the MIni HP and the only one with the wifi working was the Antix. It was the version 16, so, I downloaded the last version and …the wifi didn’t work anymore with the 17.1 version.
I tried a lot of things but nothing worked, so, I ask for your help.
                      So, here are some information:

I don’t know why but yesterday, I could work with wlan0 in ceni, but after reinstalling the system (thinking I might have done wrong things), today, there nothing, nor in ceni, nor with ifconfig as you saw before.
I didn’t do much today, I just tried to blacklist wl and un-blacklist b43 in the network resolution problem (Broadcom manager) but it didn’t changed anything, so, I blacklisted and un-blacklisted the contrari to go back to the initial sate, but there is a little difference: b43 is now in the “Blacklisted drivers” and not anymore in the “Blacklisted broadcom drivers”.
Can you tell me what I should do?
I’ve tried lost of things from https://antixlinux.com/forum-archive/cannot-connect-to-wifi-networks-with-ceni-or-wicd-t3397.html

                        Hello Forum,

I have a problem with a new installation of antiX-17.1_386-full (stretch) on my laptop. It seems, that the system cannot umount(!) the root partition when shutting down.

                        mount: / is busy
                        [info] will now stop.

At the next boot the journal is recovered again:

                        rootantiX: recovering journal
                        rootantiX: Clean, …

I cannot find any information or error messages in the log files.
Does anyone have any idea how I can solve this problem?

                        Thank you

I am also pleasantly surprised that the upgrade went so smooth, thanks to you 🙂

I will leave the two outstanding packages as you suggest.

FYI: I am not sure what this means but this 32-bit PC is still showing antiX-16. Here is the output:

                            Hi All,

I have two AntiX installations, one 32-bit and one 64-bit. They are both over a year old and I am using the testing repo. I have not been able to update either PC for more than a month. I will focus on the 64-bit installation here. First some preliminaries:

On the older 32-bit install, I tested this by installing the dependancy ‘kde-runtime’ which lead to the installation of a lot of packages and another dependancy. In addition, I am not even using KDE (am I?, using the standard DE).

Am I simply going to have to wait until the testing packages are sorted out? Is there something else I should be doing?

                            Any/all help is greatly appreciated.

many thanks for the reply. but question is if it is/was a “known” issue. the swap is never accessed, under any condition. could be my rig, and will eliminate swap if there is no fix, but prefer to be certain before proceeding.

btw, installed antiX 17 on single fully-encrypted volume group (one password at boot) and separate boot partition. the encrypted vg contains separate root, swap, and home volumes/partitions. create the encrypted vg and lvs using debian installer, mount vg and boot partition in antix live, copy/overwrite system files, then update grub and initramfs via chroot. the OS can be re-installed/upgraded without deleting/changing lvm.

(using “base” version with no internet access on target, add lvm2 and dependencies (cryptsetup already incl) to usb first and install to root lv via dpkg.)
