another question: the installer recognized separate swap partition, but after hdd boot, while all commands show it is recognized, mounted, and on, the swap is never accessed (0 used), no matter the load. have plenty of ram, but thought this strange and raised swapiness (does this function in nosystemd OS?) to 100, ran some memory load tests, and still no swap access. a known issue?
(since it does not appear to be called/accessed at all, haven’t bothered to encrypt the swap partition, so that is not a possible factor).
      cheers

that’s probably just fine. Even my MX box very rarely goes to swap, and its a bit heavier than my antiX setups. 1 one installed antiX netbook doesn’t even have a swap partition (and usually I just run antiX off the live-USB anyway).

thanks for the quick response and good to hear. found your distro to escape from debian/gnome bloat (specifically the dreaded gvfs), which really meant abandoning systemd. pleased to find antix, and easy enough hdd encyption post-install and packages like dnscrypt-proxy were forked. rig is fairly high-end, but no longer sounds like a helicopter after booting into the OS.
        many thanks

Managed to set up an encrypted /home partition on hdd post new-install using cryptsetup/crypttab. But would like to encrypt root, swap, and home partitions during install using lvm.

I’ve seen the lvm setup post in Tips and Tricks and curious if anything was in the works for antix to have option to setup and encypt an lvm on hdd during install (similar to stock debian install)? And subsequently allow an OS re-install on encrypted root partition. cheers

How do you go about “swapping out the libffmpeg.so file”?

The Slimjet forum has various comments on getting video to work. Some have mentioned taking the libffmpeg.so from the Chrome directory (supposing you run Chrome), but the forum admin has also included a download link and I believe there is one in the FAQ. This version of libffmpeg.so replaces the one in /Opt/Slimjet. My Slimjet video was working fine through swapping the linked libffmpeg.so for the default one. But an update knocked out the video again. I had preserved the libffmpeg.so from the download link that had worked before. But the fix of swapping it into the directory of the update failed. So the Slimjet folks need to coordinate versions of libffmpeg.so with updated versions of Slimjet. At least, I think this is the issue. I’m hoping someone using Slimjet has a better handle on the problem than mine. I really do like the browser.

Ditto about Slimjet. It updates often and easily. There only seems to be a glitch with playing video in sites like Facebook. I’ve used a fix (swapping out the libffmpeg.so file in the Slimjet directory) but this seems necessary on every update.[/quote]

Recently I started playing with Slimjet. The latest 32-bit version performs remarkably well on my old systems. The only plug-ins I installed are the default offering of Ad blocker and the addition of the Youtube downloader. Slimjet loads pages quickly, scrolls smoothly, and seems to have all the functionality of it’s parent Chromium browser. Yet Slimjet has a small footprint, uses little RAM, and is lighter on the CPU when compared to all the other 32-bit browsers I’ve tried, including my previous favorite, Pale Moon. I hope others here will give Slimjet a try on their 32-bit machines and post back to confirm or deny my impression of it.

Okay, this is the inxi output rendered via the torturous route of a floppy because Athlon is not connected to the internet at this time. You may well chuckle at that, but my Kingston USB memory stick is not recognised by AntiX yet, so that’s another tweak for later.

I have not changed the kernel, this is exactly as installed from my DVD.
                  Still no joy with shutdown.
The loop persists and the only time I see a shutdown option is if I expand the logout menu.
If I could quit the window manager it might help.
At least I could then login as root and issue a shutdown command.
How can I quit ice to arrive at the console, which is in the background?

The btrfs filesystem’s compression feature is quite handy to shoehorn things onto the small drives in early netbooks and other older systems.

There are three compression modes available in btrfs. Lzo is fast but the compression is not great. Zlib compresses very well but it is comparatively slow. Zstd is available from kernel 4.14 onwards and compresses about as well as zlib, and about as fast as lzo. (Zstd has one big disadvantage in that grub will not boot from a drive that is using zstd on the files contained in /boot/).

I run btrfs with zstd compression on my Asus eee pcs with their tiny and sluggish 4 GB SSDs. On a system with such small and slow storage, it helps spending less time reading and writing from the drive, albeit with a slight increase in cpu usage during access. It will however be slower to do the initial install as it tries to compress every file.

This modified version of the cli-installer from 17.1 has a couple of extra options for btrfs available in the file system selection menu.

There are only two very minor changes involved, both optional and in addition to a standard btrfs install.

The mount options include compress-force=zlib during the installation and in the fstab it creates, enabling and selecting the compression type.
                      # mount -o defaults,relatime,compress-force=zlib

Optionally, during the filesystem creation, options are better tuned to small hard drives (<~16GB). This allows any sector to be used by data or metadata, (preventing erroneous drive-full errors which can occur on small drives otherwise).
                      # mkfs.btrfs -f -M -O skinny-metadata /dev/sdX

Here are the results comparing installation of antiX-full to a 4GB drive. This is using the modified cli-installer, otherwise installed as standard from antiX-17.1-386-full.iso.

I also decided to see if it was possible to get a complete install of antiX 17.1-full with all subsequent updates installed onto a 1.5 GB drive, in a usable state.

After the initial installation, packages were updated individually using apt list –upgradable, then apt install for each one. (Some of them will pull others along with them). This was necessary as with the number and size of the updates available, apt upgrade as one operation would have filled the drive. Then the kernel was upgraded to 4.15.14 from the antiX repo. Finally, I installed bleachbit to remove the localizations that i did not require.

In the end, it got there with a touch of room to spare, at around 1.2 GB used for the install and around 300 MB available:

Filesystem	1K-blocks	Used	Available	Use%	Mounted on
                      /dev/sda1	1534976 1210212	337056 79%	/

Although the 1.5GB drive was just as an exercise, this sort of install is useful on early netbooks with their minimal storage, and other older hardware with small slow drives. Once grub is updated to support zstd, it will bring easy performance benefits as well as size savings.

I’ve similar hardware to a couple of guys that already posted here:
My office work pc is a netbook with atom 1666 mhz cpu, no dedicated graphics board, 1 gig ram, with swap. It has antiX 16.2 installed to hd and a live usb 17.1 with persistence. It’s plugged to a external monitor, keyboard and mouse (so it serves as a very silent destop- no fan noise at all). I work on-line and most of the time I use firefox ESR (low memory consumption) but also palemoon and the latest firefox version I manually installed (quantum feels faster, but uses more ram than FF ESR). The main problem with browsing is that it takes about 10 seconds to open firefox (almost no difference If I’m running from the installed or live OS- that sure tells me how slow my hd is…), I can’t have many open tabs because of ram restrictions. Despite these restrictions it’s a great, reliable and fluid to use, office pc.
At home I have a Pentium +/- 1800 mhz desktop, 1 gig ram, with antiX 16,2 installed, with a old nvidia card. I never figured out why, dispite multiple trying multiple configurations, streaming video on the browser (youtube) is always more fluid on my netbook than on my nvidia powered desktop. But using mpv I can view hd streaming video just fine on my desktop…

I belive most antiX users have older hardware. If this OS makes hardware that’s more than 10 years old usable, it’s sure to fly on newer machines. It lakes the eye candy most OS have. For that you can use MX linux (kind of antiX cousin, XFCE based distro) or any other distro like Ubuntu, Debian, etc, etc. The more eye candy the OS has, the more resources it demands… SO, I’m sticking with antiX, even if I’m able to upgrade one of my machines.

I am giving up now, but here is the fstab files for the record.
                          This is the ORIGINAL /etc/fstab

                          # Pluggable devices are handled by uDev, they are not in fstab
                          /dev/sda1 / dos defaults,relatime 0 1
                          UUID=52073545-da33-4669-b12a-39d5ebf63899  swap                         swap       defaults                 0 0
                          /dev/sda3 /home ext4 defaults,relatime 0 2
                          # Dynamic entries below

                          UUID=4b5ec284-3f0b-4e47-bbde-bd6f1b02c53b  /media/sda4                  ext4       noauto,exec,users        0 0
                          /dev/cdrom /live/boot-dev iso9660 noauto,exec,users,ro 0 0
                          /dev/sr0 /live/boot-dev auto noauto,exec,users,ro 0 0

And this is the ALTERED /etc/fstab (which gets the home directory recognised)
Note: I commented out the original line for sda3

                            @cyrilus31 – I use a second-hand Thinkpad L412 (cost £120) and I swapped the hard drive for a ssd.

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

Which video editor do you use and did you install it from the Debian Stable repos?

Well, I don’t rightly know what qualifies, but I use ffmpeg to create dvd’s, and Avidemux for editing out parts of videos and adding music. With these, I also use a browser, rox-filer, and a terminal or 4(urxvt), open at the same time. This is also true during kernel compiles.

I also checked during a kernel compile after writing the above, and it takes 9 seconds to open Palemoon Browser. Next time I am running avidemux I’ll check that time too, but really haven’t noticed differences to any major degree because they ALL ramp out the CPU, and all seem to run around 700-1100MB (from memory) when used together with the rest, and I don’t generally open more than three tabs at a time in Palemoon. My swappiness is currently set to 5 and the cache pressure to 50.

Here are all stuff I do, per your request for download information on the programs I am using. I hope they may be useful to you.

I don’t know how much my multitasking is due to the BFQ Scheduler or not, I did the switch and haven’t looked back. Works well for me. Link if your interested. https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/how-to-use-the-bfq-io-scheduler/

I fully take into account there may be some production suite common for editing but I don’t use anything like that.

Well. Mt Emachine 3507 in the motorcycle shop finally started to die on me. So instead of wasting my time now on the reason why.
I BROKE OUT ONE OF MY CITY HALL SERVERS ANS HERE SHE IS.

oops. caps lock was on and I am too lazy to re-type. Oh well.

Everything works out of the box. Sound. Video. Wireless. Nothing negative to report.
I think I have posted already on how I use a sattelite dish for my wireless antenna mounted on the outside wall of the shop.

                                i have posted

                                  Hi, bobbiecb

                                  Welcome.
I too have a wimpy machine: 2 core Atom uP 1.6 GHz with just 1 GiB memory.
I came to AntiX in fall of 2017 because of the mepis lineage, philosophy
of lightweight, and a live iso fits on a CD.

My experience: modern web pages are ridiculous with processing and memory
requirements. Particular bad actor is music.amazon.com. Another bad
actor for me: netflix.com after log in. Some web pages spin the processor
                                  even when quiescent, i.e. aliexpress.com and antixforum.com.
/sidetrack: Anyone know of a cloud-hosted browser virtualization company?

Since you have 1.5 GiB, you are likely OK without swap in my opinion to
browse such pages. I found firefox 59 (quantum) noticeably faster then ff
52 ESR and worth the effort to install and manually configure pulseaudio.
I find ff 59 helps on speed only, not memory consumption.

You say you “installed several browsers” to try on your p4 machine.
                                  Please post to thread
                                  https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/default-browser/ about your
                                  experiences. Thanks.
