I have changed 2 programs, and renamed them in my attachments to folder_subfolder_filename.rtf

They need to be owned by root and executable looking like this in their folders if you ran an ls -l looking for them

      /usr/local/bin
      -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1510 Mar 31 22:26 desktop-session-exit

      /usr/local/lib/desktop-session
      -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 3307 Mar 31 23:21 desktop-session-exit.py

Don’t install till I confirm that I have tested them ok. Note that I tested them on an installed system, not a live usb, and did not test with any persistence

It did work without any troubles, same as on 17 on the old HP. This particular machine has 16 gb of memory, so there was about a 30 second delay while shutting down for it to save from memory to disk (I think it saves it to the swap drive), and another 30 seconds or so resuming to restore from disk to memory, so be patient with it if you have lots of memory.

I do have a github account, but have never uploaded or changed anything there, in case that’s easier than dealing with my .rtf hack. PS:note that the website would not allow .py.rtf, so I made that _py.rtf to get by the censors. The code changes are very small, but prevented it from working, which I’m sure caused complaints because the system would not have hibernated.

Notice my backup < named grub.bkup > ? I backup certain files right after a install. Just habit now. I don’t dual boot anymore either, Though I used to be a grub4dos fanatic years ago.

Now I just swap out hard drives instead of editing grub. Takes me about 5 minutes. You might want to start a thread in New Users for your grub problem.

I have had the worst of luck lately trying to install off of cds / dvds. I think it is because they are so rarely used on the target machines. They seem to work fine on the one computer that the disk drive is used more regularly on. Instead (when I cannot boot usb) I remove the hdd and connect it to another computer via an usb converter. Partition it so there is the main install ext4 partition (majority of the drive) and a small ext4 partition (to be used as swap later). I then copy the iso and extract it to the small partition. After that I install grub to the mbr of the disk and point it to the small partition configured like a “live usb” or “frugal install”. After this and installing the drive back into the old computer I boot the computer and install to the main partition (without swap at the moment). After the reboot finishing the install I run gparted and format the small partition for swap and edit fstab to add the swap partition.

Hope this helps if you cannot get an install any other way.
P.S. If you plan to try other iso’s (or upgrade / reinsall) it is nice to leave the small partition for the ISO and make a separate swap partition. That way you can copy the iso to the small partition and modify grub to point to it. Saving you from most of the above procedure with removing the drive and adapting it with another computer, chrooting, and manually having to modify fstab for a swap partition.

Computers are like air conditioners. They work fine until you start opening Windows. ~Author Unknown

Hello, I’d like to post a little report about AntiX successfully running on a HP Compaq nx9105 from c.2003-4. Everything went smoothly, no problems at all ! I can even watch youtube videos with palemoon without the box blowing up, so much fun. 😀

That must be why it wouldn’t work. I couldn’t even get the base version of antiX to install on the MSI desktop’s 4GB SSD.

I still wanted to make use of that 4GB SSD so I took a different approach. I used 2GB of the SSD for swap and the remainder for what I named “app-swap”. I often edit large photos with Gimp and the program let’s you designate the location you want Gimp to put the scratch file. I set it up to use “app-swap” on the SSD with hopes it would speed operations up a bit and also leave more resources for other apps.

I was able to verify my install was doing as planned. I created a billboard size image with and without Gimp using the “app-swap” partition. The biggest difference was in how much of my precious little RAM was being used. With Gimp using a scratch file on the home disk, the SATA, used 1.49 Gigs of my total 1.97 Gigs RAM. But when I had Gimp put the scratch file on the special partition I was only using 500 Megs of RAM!

I am very happy with the way it’s working out. Thanks for the suggestion about speeding things up with the SSD.

I removed the 3 virtualbox-guest packages and rebuilt dkms again, without errors this time.

I also installed 4.9.87 kernel to the other (old, too) laptop (see below), without remove the 3 virtualbox-guest packages before. No installation or rebuilding dkms errors.

Repos seem to me the same for both laptops. For the P4 (no errors) one:

For the celeron (virtualbox errors) one:

But the important thing for me is that both laptops seem to work well with 4.9.87 kernel.

                          Hello to all.
Just installed antiX, but did try it in 2011.
Devs have done a fantastic job with this distribution, so wanted to say thanks and a tip of the hat to all involved.

I understand that the 4.9.75 is not patched, so I installed 4.9.87-antix.1-486-smp (32-bit) kernel to this old kit:

The installation gave me (too) this error message:

Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 4.9.87-antix.1-486-smp (i686)
                            Consult /var/lib/dkms/virtualbox-guest/5.2.4/build/make.log for more information.

Afterwards, rebuilding dkms gave exactly the same error. It had given the same error when rebuilded dkms for 4.9.75 kernel, too.
The new kernel seems to work without problems.

                                Now what?
Do I now need to use Synaptic to remove 4.10.5 kernel and headers. If so, do I use “Mark for Removal” or “Mark for Complete Removal”?

Is there any chance that this will crash my system?

Thank you for the development of the new version 17.1.

I am currently using antiX 17 (32 bit) and want to upgrade to 17.1 (32 bit). I have never done this before. Please provide me with the step by step process.

You note: “Current antiX-17 users do not need to download since upgrades will come through the repositories”

I tried sudo apt-get update, then sudo apt-get dist-upgrade but this did not upgrade to 17.1

                                  Thanks for the help
