I just installed antiX-17 on my old pentium-III (after some trouble with the installer and make-fstab, see a previous thread). But I cannot get any browsers to work. They all crash. Even thought they all work on this same machine in antiX-16. I installed SeaMonkey, QupZilla, and SlimJet and Pale Moon. SeaMonkey starts and browses for awhile but then crashes. FF crashes immediately. SlimJet and PaleMoon do not launch.

I read about some crashes of FF and SeaMonkey maybe having to do with SSE2. But I can’t tell if that has anything to do with it. And like I said these both work on this same rig using antiX-16 and other distros such as Vector and Xubuntu.

Here are the inxi outputs for both the antiX-17 and the antiX-16 installs, if it helps. Any ideas on why I can’t get a browser to work?

      Thanks,
      Sean

          include

          cat /etc/fstab

          and

          sudo parted -l

in your next post. I have borked fstab on my own also before. I learned to make backups like so.

          sudo cp /etc/fstab /etc/fstab.backup

          But, re-reading your post

How do I do this if I can’t even get the live system up and running?

Looks like I don’t know how to respond right. I got by installing full iso AntiX 17 on my IBM T23 Pentium 3 thinkpad with a cpu with no sse2 support with the default kernel shipped. I had no need of a cli install. First I have heard of making a hand made fstab file during the install process. But I have not done a cli install since version 8.5. I also quit multi-booting things like Semplice, Puppy, Slackel, Salix, Vector, Zenwalk, among others because it confused me and I spent too much time on my gear troubleshooting. Vs using my computers.

          I used to be a grub4dos expert.

So my take on your situation with crashes and stuff. Might be a hardware issue on older gear. Worn out so to speak. I have had the sense to sell off things like my IBM 390 or Net Vista desktop boxes. I keep a old Panasonic CF-48. A old IBM T23. A couple of single core Atom netbooks. Just to post on how I install AntiX on old gear. Then they get put away mostly.

Because I run daily on big beefy gear like this every day.

So me being kinda kicked back and enjoying how far I got on one my motorcycle builds today. Sipping Dos Equis beer. Being off topic.
Don’t really know how to answer

antiX-17 was working so well on my P-4 that I decided I would try to install this current version on my main P-3 system. This P-3 system (1 Ghz w/ 512 RAM) is currently running antiX-16 just fine and I had no trouble with the install of version 16.1. But when I tried to install antiX-17 I could barely get the live distro to load and the install crashes, even with the cli-installer. The system stalls on a “make-fstab” line and follows after several minutes with several “input/output errors”.

When I finally got to the command line I was able to log in as root. But when I tried to launch the cli-installer it gives me a message that it is replacing, (or making a new?) /etc/fstab. And it just dies there. The only way I can get out is to use CTRL-ALT-DEL to reboot. I have tried every option on the Grub launcher with the same results. I had the most success with the “Failsafe” mode to get to the live installation but the mouse wouldn’t move and I ended up using CTRL-ALT-F1 to go to the command line and reboot.

Because one minute. Everything goes whacko. But AntiX 16 running currently runs fine. Just wondering. Why not copy AntiX 16 /etc/fstab. Read it off usb on one of your other computers to make the /etc/fstab for the cli install?

Howdy and Welcome from the forum scooter tramp. Hope you find a better poster/answer than me.

Edit. Did you md5sum check your iso before installing?

andfree, in case you want to edit the bgimage for SLiM login screen, the imagefile which read for slim background is
            /usr/share/themes/antiX/background.jpg

(nowadays, IIRC, controlPanel has a gui utility for swapping in a different bgimage for slim)

                If my cpu outputs “bugs : fxsave_leak sysret_ss_attrs swapgs_fence amd_e400 spectre_v1 spectre_v2”
All of these bugs is kernel 4.14.14-antix.1-686-smp-pae the right one to be using or should I
put the 4.9 patched one. I have included some of dmesg output and cpuinfo in the txt file.
                It’s running antix-17-full 32 bit.

I do intend to upgrade my kernel in the near future; this is still a fairly fresh install. I had a fully up-to-date system running on this same hardware setup earlier this February with the same problem, so I doubt that the issue is in the kernel. I will post the results of “dmesg | tail” when I get a chance.
Thank you for your interest in my machine’s issue, and for the great work you all put into this excellent operating system.

Chrome-Browser which I don’t use in AntiX because I own a chromebook. May be the only sticking point you may want to consider. Since Google-Browser is only 64 bit now. Depends on personal usage. So again. Up to you.

                          Hi, Roy,
I have the very same specs on my old netbook I use at work: 1.6 Ghz, 1 Gb ram. But I do use swap.
I’m perfectly able to use FirefoxESR or even Firefox 58 (that takes up more memory) and have several open tabs, and a instance of LibreOffice Writer and the file manager open at the same time, at it all takes about three quarters of my physical RAM…
For watching youtube videos I would also recommend:
1-firefoxESR, using the lowest resolution you can OR
2-firefox with the Ant video downloader extension (that allows to download from youtube and almost any other streaming site, you can open the file and watch it while you are downloading it- please note that this extension no longer works with firefox ESR) OR
                          3-Streamlight (for youtube).

                          To SamK:
hi I never noticed the 2 very handy apps you pointed out, thanks for that!
I tried out rec but have 2 problems with it: it records a very loud humming noise under the sound I want to record (I tested it with a youtube video) and the only way I can stop recording is closing down the terminal window (is there any other obvious way I’m missing?)

                            Hi,

Happy user here since Aug 2017. Antix 16.2 works on a wimpy desktop
machine with 1 GB mem, no swap, and 1.6 GHz atom processor. This machine
can’t run Mepis, which is my distro of choice/familiarity for last
8 years. Due to so little memory, I have to use qupzilla, not firefox,
and I have to use SMtube & not attempt to watch in browser.

I’m using audio-recorder from mepis repo. Works fantastic. Big thanks.
Polite suggestion: antiX should have this program (or similar)
                            out-of-the-box or trivially available.

                            Thanks.

                            Roy

Thanks for ideas. I still get the same problem on my antiX 16.2 system
after doing suggestion #1 (uninstall palemoon completely via synaptic,
try the palemoon install via meta package installer).

I didn’t try option #2 (uninstall flashplayer). Just don’t want
to enter a swamp. Didn’t try #3…message talks about “rc file.”
                              My grk theme is out-of-the-box.

The reason I was trying palemoon was I have some trouble with qupzilla
on some sites re: rendering. FYI, firefox doesn’t work at all, but I
attribute this to having only 1 GB mem & no swap.

I’m fully up-to-date with all packages except I have 4 packages “pinned”
to support Mepis’s audio recorder: libpulse0 lbpulsedsp pulseaudio
                              pluseaudio-utils.

For now, I’ll keep using qupzilla until too many websites are unhappy
with it. So, just log this post as a guy that had trouble with palemoon
                              on 16.2.

                              Thanks.

Hello all – another stupid question probably however having had a search through the forums I cant see an obvious answer here. I have an external 1tb Samsung hard drive that has a complete back up of loads of my files, however when I plug it into my Antix system I cant see it anywhere. Is there a quick and easy way to get it to mount/be visible?

Myself, I would d/l and install the antix 386-full, and then go through and delete the items I didn’t need. But then, that’s me.

I have build from core installing X utilizing fluxbox WM plus the programs I wanted, but it was easier for ME to just use FULL at the next installation and delete carefully.

I’m planning to do the same with base – I was just hoping to find out if there are some things I can’t or shouldn’t remove or it will screw up the install. THX

NOTE: some may have seen that I no longer have the E7440 listed in my sig. That’s becuz I swapped it to my wife for the D610. Win 10 will be better for her, and with Win7 Pro, I can dual-boot with antiX and not have to worry about WinBlows Updates wiping out my Grub. She says that the only reason I swapped is so that I get the next newer laptop, not her, but I don’t think that’s the case ;>).
