      Thanks for the help. Web search helped me to find that the problem was the /etc/sysctl.conf file. There were the lines “vm.swappiness=1” and “vm.vfs_cache_pressure=50” (a bad copy-paste, probably by me, I suppose). I deleted these lines, edited /etc/sysctl.d/local.conf as shown in my initial post, rebooted, and everything is OK.

      EDIT: I would mark this topic as solved, if I could.

        I just found, among my piles of junk in the storage, an old IBM Think Pad that I haven’t seen in a few years – in fact I forgotten we even had it. It has 256MB ram, and about 50 GB of a 100+ GB hard drive unused. Right now it has Winblows XP Pro on it and it will access the Internet. Just wondering if anyone has experienced any special issues with installing antiX on a Think Pad. Right now the Win XP takes up about 52GB of space, and I figure I can partition it in half (50 GB for Win, 50 GB for antiX, with about 1 GB left for swap). I will still be able to dual-boot with that much hard drive space, so as to be able to keep the Win XP partition for my Brewing software, which will accept Win XP. I’ll have no need to access the Internet from the brew-room, but will just connect when there is a need of for updating, etc.. Being unconnected from the internet means less bugs, termites, vermin or Trojan horses! Any issues/opinions/advice?

        Oh BTW, does antiX still include a partitioner or do I need to go out and look for one? I didn’t pay attention when I installed 16 to my spare/backup laptop.

          can’t correct set backticks on first post, which gets hidden to me afterwards.

          UPDATE 1st post: actually slim.conf three sessionstart_cmd lines isn’t working?
          the script VGAleft doesn’t apply VGA right of LCD (netbook), remains what is default by Slim launch.
          but WIFIlaunch script line does work, which runs wifi on \n dhclient -4 wlan0 .
          and the first line is standard sessreg stuff.
          So I comment out all customized stuff in slim.conf and wrote those entries in startup file of ~/.desktop-session/ , reboot and seems xrandr line to place VGA right of LCD is applied but incorrectly resolution, same old.

            My initial reply in this topic was muddied by mentioning both huge (observed, by me) subscribed browser plugin lists and (comparatively tiny, as you rightly pointed out) /etc/hosts lists provided via the adblock-antix utility.
            I backpedaled, undermining my initial rant regarding overhead & bloat by editing it in order to include your counterpoint and, within today’s post, acknowledged my deference to your position. I’m at a loss to understand why. you’re busting my chops and claiming that I’m quoting my own words.
            Full quoteback:

            #4904

            Over the years I have run antiX on many different old low spec systems, with RAM ranging from 0.5GB to 1GB. antiX Adblock is always used on them. The prospect of performance being reduced by the use of Adblock has never been observed. If you are concerned that using Adblock might possibly invite the use of swapspace, then zram swapspace works at the speed of your RAM rather than the speed of your hard disk.

            In my real world usage, the improved performance of web browsing when using Adblock far outweighs the unrealized concern of increased swapping.

            A couple of ideas…

            Adblock can be switched on and off as you desire, see the UNBLOCK tick box in its GUI. This might be used to enable blocking only when you want to web browse, and leave it unloaded when it will serve no purpose.

            There might be value in using more than one web browser to obtain the performance strengths of each, depending upon the task you want to perform. Think of it this way, would you expect a surgeon to perform an operation using a scalpel or a dinner knife used to eat a meal. Your choice of software and the way in which you use it can pay big dividends.

            The context of the original wording relates to the possibility of impaired performance only.
            I typed “overhead“, whereas you had typed “prospect of performance being reduced by the use of“.
            That qualifies as a misquote?

            A few days ago, when “SiteAdmin” took issue with my closure of a confusingly off-course topic and quipped “bad spot in the universe?”, I suppose I should have “taken the hint” that my ongoing forum participation is begrudged. Your unwarranted provocation and chastisement here, in this topic, serve to cement that impression. The silence in response to several of my staff forum posts has already indicated that we’re not a functional “team”. I’m resigning skidoo’s role:moderator; I’ll just occasionally visit the forum to post tip-n-tricks.

              It’s another one I think.
              if you copy and paste the comand
              cat /boot/config-‘uname -r‘ | grep -i zswap

              from terminal, like it has to be in terminal with backticks, by using the code button
              the BBCodes software does the following

              cat /boot/config-uname -r| grep -i zswap

                  That’s the expected result ~~ as you can confirm, by performing a websearch “vm.swappiness permanent”

                  Member
                  andfree

                    Whatever I tried in a friend’s laptop, vm.swappiness after rebooting is always equal to 1. I created /etc/sysctl.d/local.conf and set it like the advice in this topic:

                    # Uncomment the following two values to improve perceived system performance
                    # Threshold at which swapping starts
                    # Values lower than default favour filling physical RAM before beginning to use a swap area
                    # Default vm.swappiness=60
                    vm.swappiness=10
                    #
                    # Threshold at which the directory and inode caches are reclaimed
                    # Values lower than default favour retaining them rather than recovering the memory they occupy
                    # Default vm.vfs_cache_pressure=100
                    vm.vfs_cache_pressure=50

                    After rebooting, vm.swappiness was still equal to 1. I removed the /etc/sysctl.d/local.conf file again and ran:

                    $ sudo sysctl vm.swappiness=5
                    vm.swappiness = 5

                    But after rebooting:

                    $ sudo sysctl vm.swappiness
                    vm.swappiness = 1

                      When a friend plays this game on his laptop, it suddenly freezes and immediately the computer shuts down improperly. It doesn’t seem having to do with cpu temperature. It happens in firefox and in palemoon, too.

                          Mroot, thank you for your reply. I am including the hardware info. It does not list the pcmcia card though. Lspci only gives me the name of the chip on the motherboard but not on the card. You will notice that under graphics it also says it failed on something. Computer still does the job though. Here is the output:

                            I’m also back to using 64bit which does run excellent on this old relic with only 3.0 GB of ram.
                            I use what I have and don’t have to have the newest disposable crap manufactured today as I just like old electronics.

                              I assume you got zram working using the method SamK detailed in his posts using the script he modified.

                              I did.

                              If you do find a solution please post it I think others would probably want to switch to lz4 as well.

                              I’m not this good to find it by myself. Moreover, I have disabled zram and turned it to zswap, as you wrote at this topic. So, if somebody wants me to test a solution on this (compaq) laptop, he must first tell me how to disable zswap!

                              I tested this on the other (toshiba) laptop:

                              $ cat /sys/block/zram0/comp_algorithm
                              [lzo] lz4
                              xxx@antix1:~
                              $ lsmod | grep zram
                              zram                   12902  1
                              lz4_compress            2442  1 zram

                              The output above is confusing me. lzo is in the brackets, but the “lz4_compress” line appears.

                              I thought to try this:

                              $ sudo su
                              [sudo] password for xxx:
                              root@antix1:/home/xxx# echo lz4 > /sys/block/zram0/comp_algorithm
                              bash: echo: write error: Device or resource busy

                              I suppose this has to do with this:

                              once the device is initialised there is no way to change compression algorithm

                              I also thought to try these commands I found to the topic I referred above (but without replace zram with zswap on the toshiba laptop yet):

                              root@antix1:/home/xxx# echo lz4 >> /etc/initramfs-tools/modules
                              root@antix1:/home/xxx# echo lz4_compress >> /etc/initramfs-tools/modules
                              root@antix1:/home/xxx# update-initramfs -u
                              update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-4.0.5-antix.3-486-smp
                              root@antix1:/home/xxx#

                              This doesn’t seem to have changed the algorithm currently being used by the zram:

                              $ cat /sys/block/zram0/comp_algorithm
                              [lzo] lz4

                                If Dillo works, that means X windows is probably ok. For someone to diagnose I would start with what kind of machine is it and how much memory and swap is available, etc.

                                from a root terminal run, copy and paste the results of:

                                inxi -Fxz

                                and

                                ps_mem.py

                                  It would be helpful if we had more information. Please open a terminal and code the following:

                                  inxi -Frz

                                  You should get an output that looks similar to this below.
