A really well done look together with the wallpaper. In time running it from live usb with persist-all.antiX23 runs fast and stable (as always).
Especially nice is that it is finally possible to use bluetooth for audio playback without installing the cumbersome pulseaudio.Installing pipewire made this possible now in bookworm.
I first tried this with bluez-alsa-utils, which is installed by default, but /usr/share/dbus-1/system-services/org.bluealsa.service does not exist.
bluez-alsa-utils contains only systemd service file.
After a lot of experimenting with creating runit service files, i decided to try pipewire which can be started from autostart and does not need an init.
And pipewire until now works perfect.Just listening to my bluetooth speaker sound from firefox.
I’m going install to harddrive now for further exploration. Many thanks for this beautiful and reliable OS.@Christophe, isn’t the start_sound_level tightly configured in desktop-session-conf ?
@Sasa, For those who have the green screen until now they all had nvidia cards, did you try to boot with boot parameters like

I really like the new wallpaper.
Connman Glitches
When on the dialog to enter my wifi passphrase, the dialog is too narrow to show all of the content. In particular, the Cancel button at the bottom is only half there (captured on . A piece of label near WISPr mid-dialog is also truncated. The user should not need to scroll horizontally to use a dialog this size. The same thing happens on another laptop with 1366×768 (Thinkpad X230). The dialog in question is only 400px wide, so it should fit easily, at least in the horizontal direction.
I also have trouble with the Connman System Tray not wanting to Minimize; nothing seems to happen after clicking the Minimize button on the bottom right. If I instead choose Exit, it will exit but I am still working on a sequence of events to reliably reproduce this one.
Here are some specs from these two machines and a screenshot of the Connman dialog that is too narrow.

Here with a “classic: Hewlett-Packard product: Desktop s5747c.
I’m going to research this, but I suspect that this model is a derivative of the old Compaq desktop series, possibly the “Presario” line.
Once I do some research, I’ll either confirm or correct that comment.Using our Alpha 1 image with my own downloaded image of Firefox, and I’ve installed this version –

You guys were colder than us a day or so ago and today it looks like you have very nice weather!
Must be crazier than Michigan weather around Pecos, TX!We’re hovering just under 40 degrees now, though we did have a nice, sunny, but brisk day today. The sun was shining first thing this morning, something that didn’t happen more than 60 times a year with bright sunshine in some areas of Michigan, due to the number of lakes, streams, and major Great Lakes, which of course carry a lot of water, leading to a LOT of cloudy days!
We have ocean, but it’s between four and five hours east of us, so it’s not a factor. We also have mountains, but most of them are hills around here, except one that nicely protects us, (in my opinion) from too many extremes – we’re NEAR it, but not ON it, so that also helps. To our North are higher elevations and they can get colder weather and more frequent snow; we haven’t had any snow at all this season and only ONE last season, so that is also nice.
Also our weather was often warm, but rarely extreme over the past year, so it was a good year that way too.
I’m thinking of pulling out one of my dinosaur desktop units and trying out the new Alpha version there.

A comparison of memory at baseline of antiX21 and antiX23 a1 on the same computer. I tried to make both systems as similar to each other as possible: wallpaper, startup, etc.
For antiX21:
$ free -h total used free shared buff/cache available Mem: 2.4Gi 145Mi 2.0Gi 66Mi 240Mi 2.1Gi Swap: 2.0Gi 0B 2.0Gi jakersfan@antix1:~ $ inxi -b System: Host: antix1 Kernel: 6.1-8.1-liquorix-amd64 x86_64 bits: 64 Desktop: IceWM 2.8.0 Distro: antiX-21_x64-base Grup Yorum 31 October 2021For antiX23a1:
$ free -h total used free shared buff/cache available Mem: 2.4Gi 379Mi 1.9Gi 69Mi 310Mi 2.0Gi Swap: 2.0Gi 0B 2.0Gi jakersfan@antix1:~ $ inxi -b System: Host: antix1 Kernel: 6.1.9-2-liquorix-amd64 arch: x86_64 bits: 64 Desktop: IceWM v: 3.3.1 Distro: antiX-23-runit_x64-full Grup Yorum 3 February 2023The difference is about 234 Mb of used ram at baseline.

We are indeed using more memory in this version – straight from boot, on my Dell I’m using
$ free -h
total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem: 7.7Gi 457Mi 6.9Gi 52Mi 611Mi 7.3Gi
Swap: 8.0Gi 0B 8.0Gi
demo@antix1:~I want to confirm Brian’s observation on much higher (almost 290M more) memory used reported by ‘free -h’ on freshly booted antiX 23 vs. antiX 22 runit.
I do not know what this really means for using ‘free -h’ as memory footprint measurement however and why it shows that much higher under antiX 23, because measuring footprint using Lxtask both antiX 22 and antiX 23 are very much comparable, where antiX 23 appears just slightly higher, by just a few Mb than antiX 22.
Just to note, a similarly much higher memory footprint is reported by ‘free -h’ on antiX/Bookworm/SID than on antiX 22. So I am not sure if so much higher memory footprint reported by ‘free -h’ is to be taken for the face value.
My testing is on Thinkpad T410, i5, 6Mb. Tested with kernel 5.10.What I do notice – an additional process at-spi-bus-launcher seems to be running by default in antiX 23, which takes over 7Mb. I am not sure yet of the purpose of this process in antiX 23, especially because I do not see this process running in antiX/Bookworm.SID.
Aside from my above memory footprint observation:
– antiX 23 seems a head turner now, with the new wallpaper. Excellent. Huge initial impression.
– JWM default theme seems nicer than before, I think.
– No issues in operation so far…- This reply was modified 3 months, 1 week ago by olsztyn.

Comparing antiX 22 memory and antiX 23 Alpha with a 5 series kernel shows that the 5 series kernel uses less than the 6, (and as I said, 4 also uses less than 5 based on earlier tests) so antiX 22 overall definitely uses fewer resources.

I’m even using a newer kernel; I can compare older kernels and see if it’s similar; past tests showed using antiX with a 4 series kernel uses even fewer resources…--

Just to see how another distro that uses antiX does on the same hardware, here’s Legacy OS right after booting:

I’m using a LOT of default memory because I specified the boot option ‘toram’:

ok. Just tried it live:
*about my infernal login “bug”:
-The issue I reported that happens in the installed antiX 19/22 here in this Dell desktop, happens when running antiX 23-a1 live:
I boot (it’s the same on both kernels) to a desktop without conky, and nothing seems to work until I change desktop/restart IcewM. Just found a new think: at least here in antiX 23a1, things do run- I clicked, by mistake in the presentation video and I got the scare of my life when I started hearing a strange voice after some 5 seconds- it’s D.O.’s voice, from the video- nothing showed in the desktop, but the video was running!*about the looks:
-Wow – great default wallpaper
-Wow – great that the default icewm theme is the dark one, nice touch, having volume-icon set to white- it’s easy to see! Perfect
-The new menu and toolbar layout seems more intuitive, less cluttered.*about zzzfm:
-nice to have the usual bookmarks – but they don’t work on localized systems because they link to the english folder name: ex: /home/demo/documents, and not, in pt-pt /home/demo/documentos
-nice to see “Recent files” got into the zzzfm default setting – it’s a nice little touch, since jwm and fluxbox do not have a “Recent files” menu entry.
-“Restore” contextual menu should only show up in the trash folder (there’s an how-to do it, in the antix-23 suggestions thread, by me)
-“Send to trash” contextual menu should not show up when in the trash folder
-All this new zzzfm entries require, of course, localization- get ready, translation team!*Youtube video player fails to work
*Wallpaper settings does not show the “no wallpaper” option
*Recent files in Icewm menu seems to include the fix to show special characters! Yes!… but bobc’s updated scripts to manage that entry are not being used!
*on “just icewm” desktop, rox is the default File Manager – it makes sense to swap it for zzzfm, on all desktops (even when it’s not running desktop icons)
*”Modem manager”? Hum…
* Still no compositor installed by default? If it’s not too heavy, I vote for including one – its not just eye candy- it fixes some video problems too
* The sound, for some reason is way louder than on antiX 22! Yes- I can hear stuff fine on my tiny work speakers, was that by chance?
* If possible, use the .desktop entries localized for antiX autoremove; chroot; user language; yad-color
* Also, putting user language up for localization would be nice , if it’s not already (I did not see it)- if there’s a script worth localizing, it’s that one! 🙂*system resources: after playing with the OS, opening Firefox-esr, file manager, etc, and closing everything, 178M of RAM usage. Nice
When using just the “icewm” desktop, it uses 159M of 8Gb*Suggestion (for any antix version, in fact):
– in Control Panel, if CUPS is not installed, in printer settings, show a window warning users to install it, and if, disabled just run it, before showing the printer properties)
– Maybe add an updated GUI script to set the page size, also in C.P.?
– Include the suggestions I made in Package Installer, if possible (and the option to install the old antix wallpapers).
– Add a GUI off-line .deb installer – doesn’t MX have it’s own deb-installer? Can it be used in antiX?
– Add the updated antiX-updater script, maybe?
– The script to connect to samba shares would be a nice addition, maybe? It only installs the dependencies at first run, so it takes just a few kb on the iso, and is right there in zzzfm, in case users need this feature.*Verdict:
For abetaalpha, extremely nice and stable, from what I tested!
The OS looks more slick, modern, easy to use, feature rich, just amazing, considering it uses way less than 200Mb of RAMP.
