“the FAQ is a good starting point but…”

But? The doc linked to FAQ https://download.tuxfamily.org/antix/docs-antiX-17/FAQ/index.html
(which is unchanged vs the antiX16 FAQ) states:

      2.Control Centre–} Session–} User Desktop Session
click on startup tab and comment # entries you do not want to use

      3.Control Centre–} Session–} User Desktop Session
      click on desktop-session.conf and […]

^—— my “Tip” was sincere, not a sarcastic RTFM (but) the FAQ does contain apropos guidance.

many tips and accumulated knowledge got lost in the migration from the old site and forum, unfortunately

ShowMEMStatus definitely does nothing, I’ve it removed …
but the good news! “TaskBarShowCPUStatus=1″ DOES work on my system,
and then hovering the mouse over the CPU indicator shows RAM usage figures among others !

Time to set up swap file, I guess ;=)

I’m running live, remastered. I used “codecs” to install livedvdcss2. I also installed: vlc, smplayer, and mplayer. I couldn’t get any of them to play a dvd. The vlc program got the furthest. It got the dvd menu on the screen but when I tried to play the video, it errored out. The error messages are below. Here is the machine:

I was trying to set this laptop up as a dvd player for a friend. I ended up installing vlc on Windows 10 which they were able to use. I’m rebuilding an older desktop system with NVidia graphics. When that’s done I will resume testing there. The laptop I was testing has built-in intel Bay Trail graphics. I tried both the default “modesetting” driver and the “intel” driver. The error messages changed but it still errored out in the same place. I tried setting the video mode/driver in vlc manually. It didn’t help but I didn’t try every option.

Here are the vlc error messages when using the “modesetting” driver:
[00007f38100009b8] core input error: ES_OUT_RESET_PCR called
[00007f38100009b8] core input error: ES_OUT_RESET_PCR called

[00007f38100009b8] core input error: ES_OUT_RESET_PCR called

And here are the vlc error messages using the “intel” driver:
[00007f2dc80009b8] core input error: ES_OUT_RESET_PCR called
[00007f2dc80009b8] core input error: ES_OUT_RESET_PCR called

I didn’t know how to get mpv to try to play a dvd. It seemed to only want video files but I am not familiar with it. I tried “mplayer dvd://1” which often does the trick but it couldn’t find the dvd. Perhaps it needed more configuration. Smplayer didn’t get to first base. When I tried to play the dvd it said something like “mplayer or mpv couldn’t find the dvd device” which is in accord with what happened when I tried to use mplayer directly.

I can’t do any more testing until I get the old desktop system rebuilt. Just now I got some hits with Google(Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_va_gl.so). It seems a lot of people are having similar problems.

Many thanks to all of you for the plenty of answers. Dillo is very much faster, but it’s not for all uses (Google Maps, for example). Chromium seems to be a nice alternative. I’ ll test more of your advice.

Firefox has been manageable so far on this intel atom single core N270 cpu. I have 2 gig of ram so ram is not a choke point. I’ll probably install seamonkey later on using the package installer in the antix control center > system > package installer.

Just a fresh install on a saturday night. I see no breakage on anything yet. I’ll upload my apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade text file I made for any interested parties to see how it went.

All in all . Good choice4 of distro on a single core atom netbook. No matter what the ram you have available. If a touchscreen like mine. That should work also.

Now out to bike shop for me. Cuz it is beer thirty.

Any idea how to make the system more lightweight and fast?

                  regardless which web browser :

                  1) choose a “window manager only” desktop session (not xyz+rox, nor xyz+spacefm)
                  2) remove non-essential session autostarted items (conky, clipboard manager, trayicon accessory widgets)
                  3) run “sudo sysv-rc-conf” and disable autostart of unneeded services
                  4) man sysctl and read about vm.swappiness, and verify it is set to a low value (5%)

After performing 1-4, by using “htop” you might find another couple non-essential processes still contributing to the baseline memory usage footprint,
but probably none which are significant. Make a note of the baseline amount of RAM used/free.

When testing/comparing various browsers, to verify the current baseline prior to browser launch, first login to a console and launch htop.
After launching the browser (use same/known homepage, across all browsers tested), note the “free” reported by htop.
When configuring settings for a web browser, if you can manually specify (limit) its cache size, choose a value smaller than the known “free” available on your system. Doing so will (hopefully) avoid performance-killing swapfile use.

                  If using firefox:
visit “Options” and select “never load” for Flash; for any other installed plugins, choose “always ask” (or “never load”).
                  visit “about:config” and specify browser.cache.disk.enable=false
(other tweaks to various browser.cache.* prefkeys may provide additional, but minimal, benefit. YMMV. Websearch to learn more)
                  -=-
Beyond these quickie steps, there’s PLENTY to be gained by using adblocking (general goal: disallow loading of content form 3rd-party sites) browser extentions, and by tweaking browser preferences. The “user.js” (hosted on github and) mentioned at the “ghacks.net” website is a good reference. Don’t blindly “paste” the full content of the user.js ~~ read the inline comments and decide which preferences can/should be changed to suit your browsing habits/destinations.

I’ll try and cover as much as I can at the moment. I unplugged the DELL monitor and left it for awhile.

                    No, I didn’t check the iso’s md5sum.

Size – I believe I wrote the iso to a DVD.

It wasn’t me just rebooting the machine that may have caused file corruption. When I would see the message about
“entering power saving mode” the screen would go black and machine would reboot.

                    I have a 19″ Acer P186H and I’ll try that with the AntiX-17. (Later)

I tried to get the bios file, but the download doesn’t start when I click to download from Acer.

Not sure if I mentioned this? I swapped out the machine’s CPU. I wanted
to use virtualisation, but the M3800’s processor didn’t have support for that.
I replaced it with this E6600. Details below.

I’ll download the iso again and I’ll check the md5sum.

My advice is a lot simpler since your Acer Desktop has Intel Graphics from 2009. Which is supported By AntiX for years. If not a hardware break . I consider this operator error. I own a Acer Single core Pentium 4 D/A150? < Not sure of model number as I type this out >

So. Operator error or hardware broken. One of those 2. I am leaning more towards operator error. Especially when you say grub acted like it failed to install. But it did anyways. Last time womeone mentioned that in a thread I participated in. The Iso they dwonloaded was corrupt.

which saves my bacon when downloading anything from the net. My ISP is one of the worst on the forum. Good Luck.

Also. When you said you booted up your AntiX CD. I take it you meant a older version of AntiX? Since 17 does not fit on a cd till you move down to base or core versions of isos. I think your problem is a very simple fix. But requires some effort because you gotta start over.

Begin troubleshooting by ruling out Dell-U2417HJ as the problem.

                        1) unplug monitor from wall power, wait 5 minutes, replug then attempt to boot.
(hopefully will restore the monitor to “factory defaults”; may have become jangled during a power surge, or sag)

                        2) attempt to boot the Acer M3800 with a different monitor.

Next, with the PC unplugged… I would “clean the contacts” ~~ pull the RAM, the graphics card (if PC contains a discrete GPU) and clean the card edge contacts by scuffing with with a pencil eraser, then alcohol swap. Also examine/clean video cable connectors.

If no joy, next I would rule out BIOS quirkiness, by updating the M3800’s “BIOS: American Megatrends v: P01-A0 date: 03/19/2009”

                          Thank you.

I can see the shares just fine in step 1, but in step 2, I get an error message saying that “Either the file already exists or the name is invalid”. I get the same error message when I try to create a new configuration file.

                          Here is my `/.config/connectshares/connectshares.conf file:

Having loved and dabbled in antiX for a long time, I find that I still have so very much to learn and that learning is so very enjoyable.

Firefox 57 really speeds things up

I’m compelled to point out: Your observation reflects YOUR usage, is based on YOUR surfing habits and YOUR hardware.
My performance observations, tested on various hardware, have been quite unfavorable ~~ gobbling up ram and spilling over into swap.
For me, ultimately, performance is moot given the absence of my long-treasured “legacy” browser extensions.

                                Hey Everyone,

I installed antix 17 Heather Heyer and have the default 4.10.5 kernel so is there any reason I need to update from the default kernel to a newer kernel or will it do it automatically.

                                Thanks

                                  Success!
I tried using ceni and it worked. Then I installed and all is well. I’m pleased to get Antix on my ageing laptop. System info is as follows:

By the way, I didn’t explain very well in my first post. I was asked for network card password as soon as I clicked wicd- I don’t know if that is a peculiarity of my setup.
There are just a few things left that I need to do- I’ll write another, separate post if I get stuck.
                                  Thanks for your help
