Early afternoon; this morning the fog was thick; now it’s just cloudy. As for antiX, it’s humming along.
Here’s a short summary since nothing’s changed so far; this one is immediately after boot up so I can capture early memory usage.

It does nothing, but this Via cpu is already sse capable, so if gcc-7 is in the right place now, you can try any sse build, although Firefox would be pretty heavy for it, not only in terms of cpu, but it eats most of the memory, with a lightweight distro (like antiX) Palemoon/Basilisk or Seamonkey rebuilds work quite well with only a few opened pages even on 512 mb ram, 256 mb will swap a lot, up to 1 Gb it will still be fast, but beyond that the ram is not the primary bottleneck on these old machines.

Swapping out drives is possible, of course. But getting into this things is a real pain. It’s worse than a lot of laptops for access to the internals.
Not only that but the amount of hard drive space used by the Wow! system is very small. Most of the hard drive is unused, even if a person saves a lot of files there is still plenty of room for Linux on a separate partition. And yes, Brian’s comment is correct in that the person doing this needs to be competent enough to do the partitioning. One could end up losing the original stuff on the drive if not careful. You could also run from a Live USB and mount the internal hard drive to save your own data files.

Turned off my browsers for a while and then ran the stats. Not all memory is freed from earlier work. Some of it is cached and eventually releases, and some is either lost overhead or zombie processes, not 100% certain.
Before I reopened a browser I captured this update.

I’m using Firefox, and I do have three tabs open; sure enough, usage is around 1.3 GB; this system used 330Mi at startup yesterday.

hello sybok, yes this is a low budget variant of the acer extensa.
I bought it about 15 years ago for “low level” tasks like office, email, surfing …
it came with windows vista installed, which I erased pretty quick and multibooted some
linux variants. finally settled with antiX (of course, what else for low budget hardware?).because of the limited RAM I used 32bit kernels so far (series 3 and 4 kernels with antiX17).
Since the prozessor is 64bit capable, I wanted to give 64bit a try, just out of couriosity
(working surprisingly well).I think the problem has to do with the 64bit system, because the alternative 64bit 4.9.0-kernel
(came with the default install of antiX22) behaves the same way.here is my …
