I ended up successfully installing MX-21.2.1_386 Fluxbox on this iMac, with GRUB parameters “nomodeset nosplash”. I don’t think it’s using the Radeon graphics card(?) but it works OK. At least it’s a GUI desktop and not a command line only!
I am still curious why MX Linux (both Xfce and Fluxbox variants) gave me a proper GUI desktop with “nomodeset” added to GRUB, while antiX (likely the better choice, given 1 GB of RAM) gave me a good amount of trouble no matter what parameters I set (see above). Maybe a kernel version difference?

If you were to reboot the machine, and after it comes up, wait a minute or two, then go to a terminal and type free, it will also tell you how much memory is being used.
Do that for each operating system to get a reasonable comparison, and post the results. My guess is there is 100 or 200 mb difference between them. If you run out of free memory trying to run programs it will swap out to disk, and that takes it a lot of time swapping things in and out, and the result is it will slow down significantly.

Memberolsztyn
ENORMOUS amounts of memory domination by either Chromium or Chrome – many many processes all demanding HUGE amounts of VM (~ 100GBytes) with just a few innocent / quiet tabs open.
I do not know what this VM-Size column actually means in LX Task Manager, but in my case some of such processes show 32GB, while using Chrome with three tabs open and some browsing:
– The total memory use is 445M out of 3794
– Total memory installed is 4Gb
– I am not using Swap at all
– At the moment running antiX 22 SID, Runit, elogind-free. But the same I notice with just production antiX runit elogind-free, whether 21 or 22.
– I am running antiX Live with no persistence to be precise. After heavy browsing the total memory use can go up and even exceed 1Gb total memory but in my case I have not seen any real adverse impact in my setup. So VM-Size might be in my use of antiX just a theoretical value, showing limits of virtual memory addressing space, but never coming close to it in actual use.
Just my interpretation. Looking forward to a more scientific explanation…- This reply was modified 4 months, 3 weeks ago by olsztyn.

I could not determine the precise issue. I think one or both of a) formatting a good swap partition and b) using a light iso like ‘base’ are advantageous. Also possibly installing via CD instead of USB. I recently successfully installed antix 22 on the same computer. Took a number of tries; didn’t keep notes 🙁

“sudo zram start” seems to reduce load by about 80 MB, which is great. I’m going to try adding that line to ~/desktop-session/startup (hope that’s the right place…)
Don’t do that! Try what is explained here: https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/making-a-pentium-4-laptop-useful-with-antix/
Reason: any sudo command requires you to type your root password or for the password to already be in memory, if you typed it recently (ion the last 10 minutes or so). If you run a sudo command at the startup, you won’t see any terminal window asking you to enter your password, so zram (that needs elevated privileges won’t start…)Zram works by avoiding that your OS requires to use Swap that’s in the hard drive – It won’t save memory, but it will make the best use of low RAM for most use cases.
You can dig around for tips to make the best of computers with low system resources, but generally speaking you already know what to do- avoid Desktops that show desktop icons (no zzz or ice desktops). The min desktop does not load any extras in RAM – for example- no volume icon, clipboard manager, language selector… (you can launch “volumeicon” if you need to change the volume and close it again or use the alsa mixer to set the volume. Better yet: run yad-volume if you need to set the volume. You can create a toolbar entry for it, that way you do not need to always have volumeicon running).
Use lighter web browsers and tools – stay away from webmail and from most streaming sites- smtube is ideal for Youtube. For the streaming services that I tested, a dedicated app like electronplayer is better, in my opinion, than using them inside your regular browser). You can access cloud drives from your file manager, in several ways, I created a GUI script for that- but configuring any cloud service other than GDrive can be tedious, using a numbered CLI menu with countless options…). Stay way from most web office suites, if your system can’t handle them. Use LibreOffice. If your system is too slow running L.O., checkout OpenOffice (search for it here in the forum).
You can check out if JWM is lighter – some people swear by it. I tried all the Window Managers and came back to the default- icewm- it may use a couple more mb of ram but it’s the most modern and well configured W.M. available in antiX.
Think if using antiX on a very old device like using an android tablet- you can do almost everything you do in a Windows PC or Mac, but you have to use different tools… in the end you may get an even better result with those tools!P.

How about spitting out a inxi report after install is done so any mac user can see what the hardware is using with your cheat codes.
On my live antiX USB, I ran:

But on reboot after install, I’m kicked in to a CLI (no GUI desktop).
I edited to GRUB parameters to match my live USB stick parameters I used (“nosplash failsafe disable=lxF”), but no change.I consider 1 Gb of RAM as the bare mininum to use the modern web in antiX- you’ll have to be very careful with RAM usage
Yeah, despite all this work, this machine is very slow — almost unusable. I’m considering using ShredOS to just shred it and landfill it, especially if I can’t get antiX actually installed on the hard drive… But this was a fun project. And if this thread can help others rescue their old Mac(s), all the better!
