Now trying to use the GUI installer. If I have issues and need to ask more questions, I’ll start another topic here.
Nice! Congratulations!
I consider 1 Gb of RAM as the bare mininum to use the modern web in antiX- you’ll have to be very careful with RAM usage- I suggest using light web browsers, smtube for streaming youtube, thunderbird/seamokey e-mail to access your e-mail, instead of using webmail (claws, if you can configure your e-mail account in it, is the lighter option).
Try not to multitask a lot, or you may find that using the swap slows the device to a crawl. Other than that, if you don’t have hardware problems, it’s all smooth sailing in antiX.
If you can upgrade your device to 2Gb of RAM , it would be much more usable…

Dear forum members:
I’ve used Linux in my office for some 12 years and antiX for about half of that time. My old office desktop motherboard went to heaven a few days ago, and it’s replacement, a motherboard with a quad core and 2 GB of RAM and my old 2 hd (old spinning disks) is great for office work:
antiX running IceWM (no dekstop icons but with Conky running) with a nice looking theme (+ tint2 toolbar and a jgmenu- AKA FT10) + Firefox with 3 tabs open (one, very heavy- Gmail, this forum and one page I need for work), zzzfm with 3 tabs, Thunderbird, LibreOffice Writer
RAM usage: 1460mb, no Swap used
CPU usage: 11 – 13%
So, if you want to use antiX for real office work, with this very well known Open Source pieces of software (well zzzfm is a gem probably known only to us), you can do it- hell, you can use GUI scripts to mount Samba Shared Folders or Cloud Drives, so probably you can do most office work (involving webpages, e-mail, text documents or spreadsheets) with plenty of resources to spare, as long as you have more than 1 CPU core and 2Gb of RAM.
Edit: most modern OSes probably require about 1.4Gb of RAM just to be idle! If I really wanted I could, of course, shave one or two dozens of mb of RAM usage.
This system, on idle, uses about 150-160Mb of RAM and about 1% of CPU.
P.

Should have said that I was probably overcautious thinking that the old box could be hacked or compromised such that my inventions and unique designs could be stolen as many have been stolen by USA and patented. Hey; their capitalist corporate lawyers just laugh in your face when you complain – US dollar wins again..!
The simplest solution would be to stash the existing HDD and buy another 3.5” HDD – if available …. then I could safely use Wi-Fi and internet as my engineering files would be safe elsewhere.
So back on topic….
Internal would probably be faster than usb2.
Thanks Christophe, I accept your advice about speed 🙂 and go for internal converter card. My only slight experience in this area was being convinced that for my old HP G60 – rather than buying more RAM – never been in swap; it was much better to replace original HDD with an SSD drive. Wo! – speed increase was noticeable even booting up before logging in 🙂 LO and Gimp load much faster, 4x faster. Money, £20 well spent 🙂
Do you think £10 for the kit could be worth it? With its higher end specification; is my Old Box likely to be one of fastest pre 2010 machines out there? Running AntiX-22 of course 🙂
Cheers

Hello.
Release: 11
Codename: bullseye
I’d like to connect SuprCollider (uses ALSA) to connect to Bluetooth. As Bluetooth connects over PulseAudio I thought pipewire could solve the issue.
So I’m trying to install pipewire through the PPA following this link:https://trendoceans.com/enable-pipewire-and-disable-pulseaudio-in-ubuntu/
//
First I get a API key warning:
gpg: keybox ‘/tmp/tmpj7cm4o5n/pubring.gpg’ created
gpg: /tmp/tmpj7cm4o5n/trustdb.gpg: trustdb created
gpg: key 25088A0359807596: public key “Launchpad PPA for SOURAV DAS” imported
gpg: Total number processed: 1
gpg: imported: 1
Warning: apt-key is deprecated. Manage keyring files in trusted.gpg.d instead (>
gpg: no valid OpenPGP data found.
Then when I try to install some libraries:
sudo apt install gstreamer1.0-pipewire libpipewire-0.3-{0,dev,modules} libspa-0>

Start fresh and select a big static persistence file size – 20 GB perhaps (to be safe). The idea is to be big enough to install everything, yet have room enough to remaster. I think remastering should only need a couple GB.
If you install in stages & remaster after each step, then after reboot, delete the linuxfs.old & root.old files from /live/boot-dev/antiX as root, to free up the space. (Mc is good for that.)
Use p_static_root as boot parameter. (Then /home is rolled in under the same root (/) persistence file.)
If you have a swap file on the SSD of the computer, antiX live will see it & use it without doing anything. (If you don’t already have one & need to make one, I’d do it from base/full with gparted.)
The persistence is saved & used automatically (read & merged automatically) using this type of persistence, between reboots.
When it all works & you’re ready to remaster, run:
sudo live-remaster -c
(You probably would select general remaster (g), but I’m not certain how that pans out, with the /etc/skel stuff, in this instance…)

Hoping to get an SSD this Christmas
Good choice – I did that back in August 21 rather than buy RAM as I have never been in Swap or near it – even video editing 🙂 Though I could afford to buy better – I considered this to be exceptional value at about £20…
https://www.teamgroupinc.com/en/product/gx1
https://www.teamgroupinc.com/en/products/ssd/2.5-ssd/
… cheaper than RAM too 🙂 Thought 4 x faster was good enough for me? 🙂
I’ll keep experimenting to find the ideal setup.
Good Luck

If I burn the core iso to a 64gb USB3, how can I:
1. Use persistence for root and home (i was selecting static root and home)
2. from the core command line increase size of persistence so it doesn’t run out of space (i think that might be what is going wrong)
3. from the core command line create and use swap space on the SSD drive
4. update and then upgrade the core sid
4a. how do I save persistence and reboot to test it?
5. from the core command line remaster the usb
Then I will reboot.
Would it be wiser to get a simple Xorg working next, then add the rest of the base packages?

Hi Brian,
I’ve been doing the same, going thru several of my distros and updating/upgrading. Been working with some of my older kit the last few days so mostly working with antiX right now.
The machine I am on the forum with now is a laptop I bought myself from a local Circuit City and came with Windows XP SP2. After XP upgraded to SP3 it slowed to a crawl and became a real dog. I experimented with Linux and ended up installing antiX-16 after upgrading the ram to the max this machine could use, 480MB. (512 installed but the video subsystem takes some of the ram and leaves this machine with only 480MB). AntiX-16 gave this machine new life. I also re-installed XP SP2 and froze it at SP2. XP worked better again but now I had found antiX and XP got left behind.
I installed antiX-17, then antiX-19 Full and Core, running them all in a multi-boot grub setup.
Today I upgraded antiX-17, then both antiX-19 Full and Core. But since antiX-17 is about to lose support I decided to try to upgrade to antiX-22 32-bit Full. I wasn’t sure it would work on this old machine since it has an old VIA S3 graphics chip. But when I booted the Live USB it worked fine. The graphics were setup with the OpenChrome drivers automatically. The Kernel is 4.9.0-326. The WiFi was also supported OOTB. All I had to do was set it up with Ceni and my password for the LAN router. I was shocked that it works just as well as antiX-17 and antiX-19.
This has always been one of my favorite machines. It is larger than a Netbook but lighter and smaller than other laptops I had at the time. (I had one Dell Inspiron that was way too heavy to be a “laptop”). So, I ma happy this machine is working so well with antiX-22. Of course, with only 480MB RAM I can only do one thing at a time. But I am browsing with SeaMonkey and on the forum right now with this forum message. Pretty good for this single-core laptop from 2006.
