The Linux kernel does not perform well under RAM shortage conditions on desktop computers.
When running programs use RAM almost to its max, it is not uncommon for system to fall under thrashing:

In computer science, thrashing occurs when a computer’s virtual memory resources are overused, leading to a constant state of paging and page faults, inhibiting most application-level processing. This causes the performance of the computer to degrade or collapse. The situation can continue indefinitely until either the user closes some running applications or the active processes free up additional virtual memory resources.

When the memory is almost completely filled with real data (not cache), the operating system has to decide: how much of cache to throw out, how much and what data to send to the swap, and how intensively to perform these operations.
The Linux kernel with standard configuration considers the cache to be the least overall demanded type of data in RAM, discarding it too aggressively for the sake of real data, swapping out real data in small batches. Because of this, an avalanche effect arises, when the entire computer works only to transfer program executables, libraries and swap back and forth from and to HDD, leaving almost no time for the execution of programs.

Continuous reading of system libraries and programs, especially from a slow HDD, leads to a performance drop by orders of magnitude. The system may lose responsiveness for minutes, which is especially true for older computers.

Multi Generational LRU patchset, which has been merged into Linux 6.1, greatly improves memory management in case of high RAM utilization, and especially helpful on older computers with slow HDDs, where it could prevent thrashing with additional configuration.

There are Android kernel 5.10 and 5.15 backports of the patchset: 5.10, 5.15.
It would be great to see this patchset in Antix.

MGLRU is currently used in Armbian, Android, Arch Linux Zen, Chrome OS, Liquorix, post-factum and XanMod.

        More information: https://blog.esper.io/android-dessert-bites-22-linux-memory-management-38419756/

In my opinion, this is the most major patch for Linux desktop in the latest 5 years.

Please stop trying to blame the operating system unless everything else works perfectly with another OS.
First ensure Hardware is OK otherwise it is a waste of time and nerves…

I have only ever seen an issue like quoted when hardware or BIOS problems exist.
On a lot of computers of all types and manufacturers.

Do you have latest available BIOS ?. If not please update.
If possible fit two iknown working modules and test before further work.

          Hopefully understandable fault finding proceedure.
Swap the known working module in to the presently non working slot.
Boot check if the module is in use

Test with just the NON RECOGNIZED module fitted in presently working slot, first carefully clean the contacts.

If recognized and the system booting correctly, contact issue, rarely but not impossible timing or BIOS settings.

Fit both modules, Boot check if both modules are in use

Test with a live stick of another distro, very unlikely to help but not entirely unknown that a kernel issue is cause.

If problem still exists and possible fit both modules in another computer and test.

Sometimes such issues are very annoying/time consuming to resolve.
Ram modules age and can develop subtle defects. Ram can be listed by the OS but still be defective as a description is read
from the modules but nothing fully tested.

Just an update as I can’t guarantee that I can keep the original gmx link open (top of page) as it’s taking quite some place on personal email cloud limit and can’t upload to YT as I don’t have an account.
Here is a sub sixty second clip on imgur….

                https://imgur.com/a/eTPJNy3

Could I suggest that others do not post vids on YT that show our light, fast, efficient, lean, mean AntiX in a bad light by videos showing going into the SWAP zone and pictures, screenshots and wallpaper showing mega CPU-RAM usage?
Just a suggestion for an Announcement 🙂

Have not rebooted yet to see if install took. These new bios’s are a trip.

Kind of weird seeing modesetting loaded as a video driver running live. Will see what is going on later after a reboot.

What was making the old Dell struggle was the Firefox browser tabs and other software running in the 2nd workspace

Oh No – Not that old chestnut again – think your friend also said he had 20 FF tabs on the go – you would think that, being an experienced user, the bright red warning in HTop showing you in SWAP would say something to you…. ? Just basics really. Not for me to tell you how to operate an old laptop – but….
Never mind – water under the bridge.

Other readers might note the irony of you making a vid about “Better Performance” 🙂

I do not come up with excuse after excuse – not even one for my unsupported LXDE set up! It works great by following; as our leader says – leaner and meaner 🙂 Being no where near the SWAP zone 🙂 with FullantiX-22_x64-full – rather than your antiX-21_x64-full.

LXDE’s ease of use is a winner too. Head on over to distrowatch for an independent assessment under LXLE.

I am not investing any more of my time for your pissing contest.

Then one wonders why you took the trouble to empty your bile here 🙂

If you wish to attack me please expect a reply in kind. Shall we leave it there?

You do pretty well with your configuration @BobC:
On my newest system running antiX Full, IF I want to login to the GUI AND have the GUI show up in a “reasonable” amount of time, my HP-14 with just a terminal running consumes between 320-350 MB; not “bad”, but nowhere near what I used to get some of the early instances of antiX!

“Back in the early days”, I remember starting up various instances with just a simple terminal emulator and a window manager. The “Leanest” one back in those days consumed “only” 58 MB and the “heaviest” one consumed only 62 MB. We have a LOT more processes and services that start by default, and those services do provide many useful functions, but for those needing to consume less, there are opportunities to trim a lot out, and I can tell that your configuration is FAR trimmer than mine.

For this HP-14, “who cares”? I have PLENTY of free memory available, ZERO swap activity; same with my aging Dell Inspiron 5558 laptop; BOTH offer 8 GB memory, so memory conservation is not the critical resource; reducing file I/O is by far the critical resource.

On my older 32-bit systems, which I got rid of, for one, only a few distros, including ours, continue to run on 32-bit systems, so I didn’t need two extra pieces of equipment; when I got the 5558 it pretty much made them obsolete.

For many of us who use our cherished distro (including me with my OLDER test equipment), we desperately need every cycle of processing, CPU, memory, and disk/other input and output device.

I’m not sure why you thought LXDE was lighter. The difference is significant.

The Dell 620 luckily hadn’t been changed since then. Its idling at about 120 mb, and that’s running 64 bit and using Roxterm. If I was to run 32 bit and use Urxvt it would be better still. Those extra mb could be used for Zram to speed it up more.

Bought me a Dell Chromebook with Kali Linux that I played with for awhile.
Decided enough was enough and made up a 64 bit antiX full iso usb.
Hit the escape key when turning this on to pick usb bootup.
Good news. Booted up just fine. Installed just fine. Most hardware worked out of the box
Bad news. No sound. No 2 finger tap. Takes 3 fingers for the 2 finger action.
                                Tap was easy to fix.

button in hardware crashed in antiXcc . Running it terminal would throw errors but no sound.
                                Now it works in terminal

Using that nanax.fr thread. I errored out a bit following the restart commands. Reboot seemed to fix it though cuz I had sound after that.

Hopefully some one > like me > can use this thread. 😀 Tickled pink I got this working. I did not want to go back to Kali where sound and tap worked.
