When I try to boot any of the less than full isos, I get an error on a splash screen:

This is a 32-bit computer. You cannot use 64-bit software on it.

        This happens with:

        antiX-22-net_386-net.iso
        antiX-22_386-base.iso
        antiX-22_386-core.iso

The antiX-22_386-full.iso boots and installs just fine.

Here is my system info. It’s a Sony Vaio P series netbook with the dreaded GMA500 “Poulsbo” chipset.

Found an old HP convertible, complete with its pen and in perfect condition apart from its CMOS battery and main battery being dead.
People wanted to throw it away. Took it and installed AntiX on it instead:

Hello to the antiX-forum and thank you to the makers of this lightweight linux, which I think will bring this old tablet (linx7) being useful again.

Few problems, which I cant get my head around after a day of searching, installing and reinstalling:
            – No sound.
            – No bluetooth.
            – No battery level indication.

These all work with MX Linux straight out of the box with no setting up, so it shouldn’t be a big problem?

I did the “inxi -zv7” on both antiX and MX:

              Good morning,

LXDE on Antix22 intermittently generates a “No session for pid…” error and, on Logout there is no option to Shut the system down.

That error, and the ‘missing’ shutdown error does not happen in LXDE on MX-19.4 on this hardware:

but it is happening on another Lenovo T500 being used as a test bed for Antix 22.

Looking around the web I’ve found that the “No session for pid…” error apparently has a history going back quite awhile (2014?) but I’ve found no applicable resolutions (Ubuntu doesn’t count) so I am wondering if there’s a known solution to both the “pid” error and the’no shutdown’ option.

              TIA,

                hello @anticapitalista ,

have you tried the default 5.10 Debian kernel?
If that works, then there is something wrong with our 5.10 kernel on some hard drive.
If not, then the fault lies with the 5.10 series.

I had not checked this before, but I’ve managed to do some testing early this morning. Here the results:

Since there was no debian kernel 5.10.142 I have tested the nearest available, one before and one after, (5.10.140-1 and 5.10.149-2 both), which come whith packages linux-image-5.10.0-18-686-pae (signed) and linux-image-5.10.0-19-686-pae (signed). As with the most recent 5.19.0-0.deb11.2-686-pae kernel from debian backports antix boots with them straight up to the desktop, no issues. The 5.19 kernel comes with a perfecly stable, fast and fluid noveau (at least when running single head this one is absoulutely equivalent to what I was used from proprietary nvidia driver stuff, but I had not time to test in a multihead setup with an additional screen or TV out by now.).

So I decided to re-check your 5.10.142-antix.2 kernel, I apt-purged it from the system first, then remastered, installed it anew from repos, using apt. But after remaster and live kernel update it fails again with the same issue, not detecting the graphics card properly. So unfortunately this was not an arbitrary faulty install. Then I gave the 5.10.137-antix.1-686-smp-pae kernel a try, same issue with this one, it stops on console login (It is possible to force them into desktop using the fb mode instead of noveau, but only blurry, flickering and lowres screen then, no way to change it to proper resolution using xrandr.) So I reinstalled the 5.19 debian again to the very stick, without changing anything else, and again it ran straight through to desktop.

While installing the 5.x kernels I noticed an additional issue, which might get addressed also (but it doesn’t keep the kernels from booting to desktop, the debian kernels suffer from it also):

                $ sudo apt-get install linux-headers-5.10.142-antix.2-686-smp-pae linux-image-5.10.142-antix.2-686-smp-pae

And then, I noticed the .md5 chcksum files of vmlinuz, initrd and linuxfs files the are lost sometimes when remastering and/or rolling back, so there is no checksum any longer present. Couldn’t find out what triggers the loss, sometimes it happens, and sometimes the old .md5 file is perfectly backuped. But the system works still without these, and I believe they can easily get recreated manually if needed, if I’m not mistaken. Does antiX check the files against them while starting up?

                Technical details:

The logs from debian 5.10.0-18 and 5.10.0-19 look exactly like the one from 5.19.0 I’ve posted above, so I don’t repost it here (in case you need them, just let me know, I’ve stored them) Here’s what I’ve got from 5.10.137-antix.1-686-smp-pae kernel:

                  Robin

Just for comparison, I’ve installed latest debian default kernel on antiX 21, since I’ve read while searching for a solution for this nouveau issue in 5.10 kernel from above, that these issues should vanish in 5.15 kernel magically. In the repos doesn’t seem to exist any 5.15 kernel, so I installed latest available default debian kernel from the backport repos:

                    linux-image-5.19.0-0.deb11.2-686-pae:
                      Installiert: 5.19.11-1~bpo11+1
                      Installationskandidat: 5.19.11-1~bpo11+1
                      Versionstabelle:
                     *** 5.19.11-1~bpo11+1 100
                            100 http://deb.debian.org/debian bullseye-backports/main i386 Packages
                            100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

And what should I say, actually the issue from the 5.10 kernel is fixed, it boots antiX straight up to desktop. It even uses nouveau driver on a speed and clean view I’ve never seen from nouveau ever before here. This comes very near already to the proprietary nvidia drivers. Will need to get some further stress testing, but it looks promising, really. For now it seems to run absolutely stable. Maybe I can get rid of the proprietary nvidia stuff in near future and switch to 5.x kernel series for everyday work… I’m writing these lines from this very system right now. It’s amazing! Here the details:

So, maybe this piece of information contains some hints how to fix the issue on 5.10 antiX kernel, or what other options exist? Would rather like to run an antiX kernel than this debian one…

                    Regards

I had promised to test your 5.10.142 kernel on this 32 bit notebook. So here I’m with the results. The kernel boots very fast, but it wouldn’t start X, asking for console login instead. Here are the logs and dmesg output (attached) I’ve saved immediately after startup. Maybe you can make something of it.

So I’m back to 4.9.0-326-antix.1-686-smp-pae, which works great in antiX 21 test USB-stick, and for everyday usage I’m still on antiX 19 using 4.19.0-256-antix.1-686-smp-pae with old nvidia proprietary drivers, allowing way better graphics performance on this device than nouveau still.

I experimented with ISO snapshot and remastering today on Live USB.

When I created an ISO snapshot, it worked fine. However, if I then attempted to remaster that specific USB containing the ISO snapshot, it would boot and I’d see the booting display messages, but when the system started the graphical user interface, I’d see a blinking cursor just as it started, then the cursor went away and everything was blank for as long as I’d wait; however my usual disk images and my working USB images boot immediately, so for some reason there is a problem with the graphical boot parameters for the remastered ISO snapshot.

Back with the antiX version from which I built the successful ISO image; after rerunning Live USB Maker to recreate a working ISO snapshot.

                          Many thanks for the reply.

                          0) Are the contacts clean?

I can’t see them. I blew to them, but it didn’t help.

                          1) Does the flash-disc work in other PCs/OSes?

The person that gave it to me said that it didn’t work in his mac OS. I tried it in windows, and infinite windows, one after another, opened with this message:
You need to format the disk in drive E: before you can use it. Do you want to format it now?

                          2) If it is formatted, what is the partition filesystem (ext4, ntfs, …)?

I don’t see how to check it.

                          3) If you insert it, you may post output of ‘lsblk’ and (relevant part of ‘sudo dmesg | tail -50’ that mentions the new device added)

                          $ lsblk

The step 2)+3) should help to devise an explicit mount command, such as ‘sudo mount [-t ntfs] /dev/sd[b-z] <target folder>’, and see whether its output provides more/useful information other than the error code.

Does the output above help us to specify that command?

                          Thanks, again.

                            Hello mh4speech

At least I have never seen an existing sdX SCSI device name assignment getting swapped on antiX when plugging an additional device. The devices get their naming strictly by order of plugging, so the freshly plugged device will always get the next available sdX assignment.

This means, the device you’ve overwritten and the device you wanted to write to must have been unplugged or replugged after you’ve looked up its name and before applying the dd command on it.

You should find proof about what actually has happened in your dmesg output (or possibly system logs if existing) from these events.

As you probably know: The devices are named simply by their detection order in linux. So e.g. during boot it is enough to have some arbitrary response speed differences of two identical drives to swap their device names on each reboot.

But generally you should know (and what dolphin oracle already had clearly stated) that sdX SCSI device names are subject of change, not expected to be consistent between reboots (“next day…”). They are to be considered not even consistent across adding and removal of devices during the recent uptime.

So, something must have happened betwen the very instant of time you’ve been looking up the name, and the instant you’ve been overwriting it. Only you can know what it was, and if not, you could have looked it up in dmesg at least after the incident (Possibly a faulty controller has reset the connection to the drives completely for some reason, forcing a full reassignement of devices). Without this dmesg output nobody can tell you positively what has happened, since you state you’ve looked up the drive assignment immediately before dding.

Again, I’ve never seen such a thing happen on antiX. For me not only internal classical devices keep their assignement once they are assigned on boot, but this is true also for hotplugged USB devices once they were assigned in a session. They keep their assignment in antX, until they are unplugged, and only on replugging they might get a different assignment, when something else has been plugged or removed in between.

Meaning: If you have two USB devices, and you unplug them and replug them in reversed order as you’ve observed originally, this will result in reversed device letter assignment for these two devices, but not affect any other assigned device names. For example, let’s assume you have sda as unpluggable internal hard drive present, and have hotplugged USB devices sdb, sdc, sdd and sde. Then after removing sdc you will see in lsblk the drives sda, sdb, sdd and sde have kept their assignment, while no sdc device is present. Whatever device you hotplug next will get assigned to sdc, and then again the next one to sdf if all other device names below are used already the moment when it is plugged.

In short words: Without having looked up the output of

                            dmesg
                            mount
                            lsblk
                            lsusb
                            sudo inxi -zFdLpv8

immediately after, you will not find out what has actually caused your accident.

Concerning data recovery: dd has overwritten the original data structure immediately, so probably there will not be a recovery for the overlapping areas. Data recovery in general on the modern file systems is way more complicated than you might expect and how and whether you succeed depends also on the type of file system in use. Maybe you could give fixparts tool a try. You’ll find recent .deb installer packages on its download site.

                            Good luck

Hello. I tried to install antiX 22 onto my Thinkpad T400. I tried doing the “Customize the disk layout” and then took the encrypted layout in the right click menu and didn’t modify it. At 9% it gives the “Failed to open LUKS container.” error message and installation stops just like with OP. This also occurs when I choose the full disk install with encryption. I think it will happen any time there is LUKS involved.

Looking at gparted, the partitions seem to have been created but doing “open encryption” on the root partition does not work after putting in the password, probably because it was never created completely in the first place.

I disabled the auto mount, and it still is not working. I would really like to be able to try out antiX, so I would love to know how to fix this. Thanks.

Here is the system inxi output from the installation media:

                                  Hi AB,
I would try the Kingston RAM on its own, 4GB is good to have, plenty for
                                  swapping reduction with antiX.

To see what specs you can safely fit pls see your Mother board or device manual.
kingston is good quality so probably a timing issue.

Please, without offence, take in to consideration
Although the word bugger is considered mild swearing and often in plentiful usage
in uk or downunder, some forum users might know its real background and not appreciate
                                  its usage.
