Hi, I’ve been meaning to getting around to asking this. Based on my system info below, am I using the right kernel for my system? Also, I am using the zzzIcewm. What is the lightest, less resource intensive WM to use? Even when I update my system, it uses 100% of the CPU. Which I don’t know if that is normal due to my old hardware or perhaps making some changes might make it use less. In addition, I can’t seem to find a browser light enough to run on my system without it using 100% of the CPU and maxing out the RAM. Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated thanks!

Hi all, just removed purged elogind and libpam-elogind Installed seatd.
APT did not protest. Following dist-upgrade also no errors.

SID System: antiX 21, SysV init, active sid repos, kernel 5.18.04 Unlocked I5 Quad core
8GB Mem. Nvidia GT710 Passive cooled Grafics. ICEWM.
5.10 Kernel variants will run on this system but my NVME disk in a PCI adapter
        preferres a newer kernel.
This setup is running like Mr Bolt. More than fast.

Early days but all seems fine. Including Printing with Brother drivers
which is really important to my setup.

I do not use pipewire, want best sound quality so pure alsa.

@stevesrO re. question 3. I have swapped out elogind so you will almost
certainly be able to use it later along with libpam-elogind if needed.

If you are worried pin the packages and test on a separate live system
made from an image of your installed system.

Now the antiX 21 dvd won’t boot anymore. Like I said. Fighting this thing.

So booted a puppy cd to fix swap from 40 gig to 4 gig. Used the leftover as storage.

This Acer Aspire 3800 Desktop PC used to be the wifes system.
USB boot does not work anymore.
            Even with PLOP.
So got me -dvrw disc because my burner on another computer is picky.
            sudo apt update
            sudo apt dist-upgrade
            sudo sensors detect
            sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales

Already done. Been fighting this bios and computer all day to get a operating system going on here. Large hardrive in here so I fought it tooth and nail. Since hardware was not cooperating.

Today i tested 3 browsers on my old P-3 🙂
                My hardware:
                CPU: Celeron Tualatin 1.2 GHz (12*100MHz) (socket 370) w/o SSE2
                RAM: 3*128 Mb pc-133 work on 100MHz
GPU: Nvidia GF5FX AGP (nouveau driver)
                HDD: IDE 5400 rpm
On my normal notebook i made new meeting in ZOOM and share desktop with MidnightCommander and turn on notebook camera
After i tried connecting from P-3 to ZOOM-meeting
FF-102 – tried and tried, but not connected to ZOOM. I think FF very hard for my P-3 hardware – FF eat all RAM and hard use swap
Seamonkey 2.53.14 – slow connected and able view share desktop and read/write in chat, but can not view from videocam and audio not work because i compiled SM w/o webrtc
Palemoon 31 – connected (a little faster that SM) but work only chat and shared desktop. Palemoon not have webrtc too.

And i found problem with audio on FF-102. With SM and PM internet radio and internet music work good. But with FF no sound. Maybe problem with security in about:config or maybe problem with compiled browser.
                In terminal

I’ve got a bug happening, in Libre Office Writer. I’m not sure how long this bug has existed, because there was a long stretch of time when I didn’t use the full screen mode of print preview. But, I’ve been using it again now, and there’s a serious BUG in it.

The problem is that the LO Writer program is incapable of exiting full screen mode of print preview without crashing. This has been a nuisance, forcing me to re-open whatever document file I was working with – but last night it was an extra step worse. You see, I use VeraCrypt for data storage on an external drive – and when I wanted to dismount the partition, it couldn’t do it. It claimed there was still a file open, although there was nothing showing in the task bar. Finally, I just backed up the partition which wouldn’t dismount, and then shut down the machine without finishing proper dismount first. Starting up today, I discovered that LOW wanted to recover the file which had crashed last night. I let it do so, then closed the file properly.

I went to the LO website, and discovered that the current stable version is v7.3.6. By contrast, the version being served from the repo is v7.0.4.2. I’d considered filing a bug report w/ LO, but discovering that the repo version was so far behind, I concluded they’d probably just tell me to upgrade to the current version before complaining about a bug.

One possible solution to my problem, would be to uninstall the repo version, then download & install the current stable version from the website in its place. That might fix the problem… But,I’m cautious of doing that, thinking that perhaps the repo version has been tweaked in some manner to fit antiX – and perhaps losing those tweaks could cause new problems.

Another possible solution, given that the current installation is antiX v19.4, would be for me to set up an antiX v21 installation using some of the unused space on this machine’s internal HD. (It’s got enough empty space for 2 or 3 such installations…) But, that would be a pain in the you-know-what, going through the rigamarole & shennanigans of setting up another new OS. It seems like it would be much easier, to simply fix the issue that’s going wrong.

So, I’m seeking advice here in the forum, re. what’s the best course of action for me to solve this problem. Thanks in advance, for any helpful comments.

antiX on a memory starved pentium 4 from 2003. Only 494 MB RAM. 2400 Mhz processor.

It ran OK. The only problem (a big one, however) was that, with such a small amount of RAM, it was quickly using the swap partition. That caused a very distinct gap or pause when interacting with the computer.

I dusted off one of my old go-to tools — zram.

Zram uses a portion of RAM as the priority swap device. My logic told me this would make things worse. But it actually corrected the issue, to a large degree. It made this antique computer run adequately in 2022. Perhaps this can be chalked up to being part of the “antiX magic.”

I recommend that anyone who is using an old memory-starved computer to enable zram on their antiX computer. It is pre-installed. Just run these two commands to enable it:

                      sudo cp /usr/local/bin/zram /etc/init.d
                      sudo update-rc.d zram defaults

Then reboot. It will be enabled on startup. Use sudo sysv-rc-conf to disable it, if you don’t like it. (But I really think you will.)
                      😉

Picked up two 17 year old dell latitude D610s for twenty bucks. Put antix19 on both and happy with it. Both are set up about the same. I use them everyday for surfing the web, reading both local papers and the do all I need for those tasks. One I have loaded scoring for over two hundred bluegrass and country music songs as I play in a couple of music groups and it is a great help when we jam or practice. The other I take down to my shop when I am working on old tractors or boat motors. I load repair manuals on it so I don’t have to print paper copies when working in the shop. I am 83 years old and not a computer geek so I am still reading and searching this forum when I have a problem and so far it has been a great help. Did upgrade the RAM to 2gb with some memory I salvaged from other old broken computers I got for nothing. Still trying how to make bootable USB’s of the current running systems but figure I will eventually figure that out.

Reading the GRUB 2 manual, I DO remember something I had to do in my custom configuration, and with GRUB 2, it’s the ONLY way I’ve ever successfully booted Linux and Windows systems on the same computer:

                              5.4.4 DOS/Windows

GRUB cannot boot DOS or Windows directly, so you must chain-load them (see Chain-loading). However, their boot loaders have some critical deficiencies, so it may not work to just chain-load them. To overcome the problems, GRUB provides you with two helper functions.

If you have installed DOS (or Windows) on a non-first hard disk, you have to use the disk swapping technique, because that OS cannot boot from any disks but the first one. The workaround used in GRUB is the command drivemap (see drivemap), like this:

                            drivemap -s (hd0) (hd1)

This performs a virtual swap between your first and second hard drive. “

System runs rock stable as before, after this kernel update. Many thanks, anticapitalista!
This is a frugal-persist install, most recently apt-upgraded before I did the kernel update.
You wouldn’t believe this notebook is mostly 20 years old now (BIOS was flashed with an update two years after production date) when you see antiX running on it. It’s still in use for everydays work and multimedia up to 720p (3000kb/s).

                              Here the details:

Single issues when installing the new kernel was:

                              ERROR: update-menus [17874] Script /etc/menu-methods/icewm-common returned error status 1
ERROR: File /var/lib/dkms/virtualbox-guest/6.1.14/source/dkms.conf does not exist.

But this doesn’t keep it from running fine. Virtualbox 6.1.x can’t be installed on a 32bit CPU anyway. And I don’t see what the error in menu-methods could have caused by now. No visible effect as far I can see. So I don’t mind.

Windows is like a submarine. Open a window and serious problems will start.

I found this at an estate sale yesterday… only $19. This laptop even has a floppy drive.

                                  High there,

Antix live boots fast and runs fine. After installation and booting Antix with the default V5.10.x kernel, only a dark screen with blinking cursor is shown.
This lasts for more than 4 minutes, after which Antix starts running fine.
When selecting the 4.9.x kernel from the Advanced boot menu, Antix boots insanely fast within 15 seconds on my old Toshiba laptop!
I will upload the dmesg output in two separate attachments for the 4.9.x and 5.10.x kernels.
Note: MX Linux 21 (XFCE) runs fine out of the box on the same laptop.
