I’m going through my systems on my Acer Aspire 5 A515-55. PCLinuxOS was one remaining distribution where I had not checked or updated inxi until today; now it’s @ the current Stable version (which will probably change soon, due to what h2 just stated). In any case, I have the vehicles to modify both the test version and the stable version of inxi; here’s the current data for this system:

I’m totally OK with discussing inxi here; I started this thread, so from my perspective, it’s a personal journal that I’ll allow a lot of general purpose stuff, as long as it doesn’t overwhelm my own purpose for this topic. The reality is that the smxi and inxi tools are the primary vehicles I use to journal and document whatever I’m doing, so in this author’s opinion, they are not only ON TOPIC, they are assisting my journal history, which I tie back to how I use antiX in relationship to a few other distributions; I’m delighted in the way this is going!
On that point, now that I have at least one of my system updated with a current tool, I can use our GUI tool and it provides a lot of up-to-date information:

I used the links in the h2 signature to get the most recent (released) inxi and it wasn’t difficult at all.
But once I got to the site, I also saw the exact description that Harold provided above, and he’s absolutely right.
No matter which “method” you use to get either inxi or smxi, or any other tool, for that matter, it’s rarely complicated, and these specific tools are definitely quick and easy to download. In my case, I grabbed a zip copy, unzipped the files and put the stuff in my own personal location; easy, done.

As I promised Harold, I would get a newer copy of inxi. If you simply click on one of the inxi references in a recent h2 signature, you can get a fresh copy too.
Here is a similar report with different options selected AND a much more current version of inxi:

I’m using a different piece of hardware again today, and it’s another one where at the present time I have ONLY antiX installed.
I hope to spend some time later today acquiring a newer version of the excellent h2 tool inxi. In the meantime, here is

I’m here with a remastered Live USB; note Harold suggests that we get a current version of inxi in the next week or so;
he’ll have a fresh, tested version in place by then that contains many additional improvements.Meanwhile, here’s my latest:

Remember that since your display showed TWO different EFI partitions, be sure to select the one:
Reuse (no reformat) sda3 as EFI System Partition
and NOT
Reuse (no reformat) sdb2 as EFI System Partition —
because sdb2 is the USB drive from which you are installing the software.
Make sure you do it correctly.Also, some people install it all on a single physical partition and only use different partitions for swap and the boot block;
I rarely use a separate partition for /home, for example, though others will divide them up.This is mainly when you install for PERSONAL use.
When it’s a shared server, such as a large, interactive UNIX or Linux server, that’s a much different story.
THEN, I use a different physical device for practically every major thing, for example,
/ and the core /bin, /sbin stuff with / on one device
/home on another device, and if there are LOTS of users, maybe even a chain of several devices.
/usr may also get another device,
/var may get another device, etc. — BUT note, this much different configuration is when you are supporting a large development or user community.
When it’s JUST your OWN system, you don’t need to divide things up because it IS more complicated that way.
So use some thought and discretion to decide what you actually need based on what and how you intend to use the system.
IT is CAPACITY and performance concerns that make businesses select so many different devices, but individual use has vastly different (and simple) needs.--

Yes, I set it to ESP.
When I click next, I get this message:
The antiX Linux Installer will now perform the requested actions. These actions cannot be undone. Do you want to continue? There is a Show Details button. Upon clicking it, I see this:
Reuse (no reformat) sda3 as EFI System Partition Reuse (no reformat) sda5 as swap space Format sda8 to use for / (root) Reuse (no reformat) sda4 as /home Reuse (no reformat) sdb2 as EFI System PartitionNotice the last line; the device is sdb2. But that’s the live USB! Is this normal?

Hello caprea
Sorry forgot about other details.
My live USB is antiX-21_x64-full Grup Yorum 31 October 2021 , so that’s what I want to install on my laptop’s hard drive.
The hard drive has GPT partition table.
I have now turned the formerly PBR partition into a 1 GB fat32 partition, with “Flags” of “boot, esp” (according to what I’m seeing now in GParted).
Upon running the installer, I chose the ESP grub install.
Installation still failed.
I also see this:
Smartmon tool output:
—- sda (ESP, SWAP, /, /home, ESP) —
5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 943why are there two ESP? there should only be one.
Update:
at 95% installation, I get this message:
GRUB installation failed. You can reboot to the live medium and use the GRUB Rescue menu to repair the installation.(if you can tell me what should be the file system and size of the EFI system partition, that would be great)

in forum New Users and General QuestionsMemberkaye
Hello Friends!
I’m trying an installation method that I’ve never tried before – grub on PBR (partition boot record)
Currently if I look at GParted, i have these relevant partitions:
1. 2 GB home partition
2. 9.77 GB root partition
3. 1 GB swap partition
4. 300 MB boot partitionNone of them have any Flags.
When I run the antiX installer and I’m at the point where I can choose which partition to install GRUB, I choose the 300 MB boot partition.
Installation to the hard drive seems fine; no errors reported. However when I try to boot the hard drive, I get something like
MokListRT Out of Resources
then a black, ordinary screen where I can choose to boot antiX but it never boots, which then causes the still inserted live USB to boot instead.
What am I doing wrong here?
300 MB for boot partition too small?
Does PBR need to be ntfs format?
Thank you for your time!

Linux-libre
I downloaded @andyprough’s antiX libre respin that fits into a CD. I was able to pare down the iso without having to uninstall any programs. As a result, I was able to create an iso that contains both abrowser and seamonkey that came in at 635 MB, enough to fit into one of my old 650 MB CDs. I also learned how to update the libre kernel. @andyprough’s iso had the 4.9.309-gnu1 kernel. I was able to update to the 316 kernel and purge the 309 kernel.
Basically I had to sudo apt install
linux-firmware-image-4.9.316-gnu1 linux-image-4.9.316-gnu1 linux-libre-4-9and then sudo apt purge
linux-firmware-image-4.9.309-gnu1 linux-image-4.9.309-gnu1This kernel update and purge of the old kernel produced an iso snapshot of 637 MB.
I am running this antiX21 libre respin on this old laptop that I had bought brand new for my oldest son 8 years ago. He gave it back to me last year with the mouse touchpad broken and a broken hard drive. I run this antiX21 libre respin live as a CD. I also found a way to use the keyboard numeric pad as a mouse.

I think it’s an excellent idea and I look forward to trying it. Maybe it’ll be useful on either my Lenovo laptop or the HP laptop or desktop.
This also brings back memories. My second computer purchase was a Toshiba laptop and I used it for grad school between 1999-2001. When using the Web version of the online class I could run Linux but I used Windows NT or 2000 to access the classroom directly for formatting, rich text and download or upload of class materials.
Since it was a Master of Computer Information Systems I discussed Linux extensively and predicted that Linux would eventually dominate everything EXCEPT the desktop, a prediction that’s largely accurate, though it’s the kernel, not necessarily the environment that has made the most impact.

Topic: Installation fails [SOLVED]
