Despite the age of this system (2011 vs. the 2015 date of my Dell Inspiron 5558), this one, in my opinion, was made with higher quality components.
Even at over a decade old, this runs well with either antiX or MX Linux (or Debian, for that matter). This is my final comparison of the day (and I’ve shown this one before):

I found a “similar” USB image, antiX-16_x64-full Berta Cáceres 26 June 2016. I got this one to work with wicd; I got ceni to work with the antiX 16.2 image:

Wonder of wonders! I found an antiX-16.2_x64-full Berta Cáceres 15 June 2017 USB in my little box of USB sticks and it actually boots and runs with this old HP Compaq 2510p Notebook!
I also found a REALLY old antiX M11 disk but that one may have been damaged; it started to boot but failed to recognize any kernel, though in theory it would work on this old box.Anyway, here is the proof on this one! Notice the OLD version of inxi and everything else!

Linux-libre
I downloaded @andyprough’s antiX libre respin that fits into a CD. I was able to pare down the iso without having to uninstall any programs. As a result, I was able to create an iso that contains both abrowser and seamonkey that came in at 635 MB, enough to fit into one of my old 650 MB CDs. I also learned how to update the libre kernel. @andyprough’s iso had the 4.9.309-gnu1 kernel. I was able to update to the 316 kernel and purge the 309 kernel.
Basically I had to sudo apt install
linux-firmware-image-4.9.316-gnu1 linux-image-4.9.316-gnu1 linux-libre-4-9and then sudo apt purge
linux-firmware-image-4.9.309-gnu1 linux-image-4.9.309-gnu1This kernel update and purge of the old kernel produced an iso snapshot of 637 MB.
I am running this antiX21 libre respin on this old laptop that I had bought brand new for my oldest son 8 years ago. He gave it back to me last year with the mouse touchpad broken and a broken hard drive. I run this antiX21 libre respin live as a CD. I also found a way to use the keyboard numeric pad as a mouse.

I don’t know why but the only kernels that boot are the amd64 kernels; the other ones kernel panic, have difficulty properly reading and utilizing the initrd images even though they exist.
It ended up worse than that; the presence of the other images seemed to mess up cmst too and I was unable to use the network. I removed all 294 kernels, rebooted and it works again. I’m concerned that the hardware is not working very well but it’s not a primary system so I can experiment.
Oh well, here is what works:

I’m back once again with my Dell Latitude 5558 laptop today, and I’m continuing with testing various systems. After using quite a few of my antiX images, here’s the MX-21.1_x64 Wildflower October 20 2021, updated today with the most recent Bullseye version of the Liquorix kernel. Note that
Liquorix also has 5.18 kernels available in their unstable repository; I noticed at least one of them earlier today.inxi -Fxz System: Kernel: 5.17.0-13.1-liquorix-amd64 x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 10.2.1 Desktop: Xfce 4.16.0 Distro: MX-21.1_x64 Wildflower October 20 2021 base: Debian GNU/Linux 11 (bullseye) Machine: Type: Laptop System: Dell product: Inspiron 5558 v: 01 serial: <superuser required> Mobo: Dell model: 086DKN v: A00 serial: <superuser required> UEFI: Dell v: A04 date: 08/06/2015 Battery: ID-1: BAT0 charge: 30.1 Wh (100.0%) condition: 30.1/41.4 Wh (72.6%) volts: 16.2 min: 14.8 model: Samsung SDI DELL 07G07587587 status: Full CPU: Info: dual core model: Intel Core i7-5500U bits: 64 type: MT MCP arch: Broadwell rev: 4 cache: L1: 128 KiB L2: 512 KiB L3: 4 MiB Speed (MHz): avg: 2932 high: 2981 min/max: 500/2401 boost: enabled cores: 1: 2959 2: 2894 3: 2981 4: 2895 bogomips: 19156 Flags: avx avx2 ht lm nx pae sse sse2 sse3 sse4_1 sse4_2 ssse3 vmx Graphics: Device-1: Intel HD Graphics 5500 vendor: Dell driver: i915 v: kernel bus-ID: 00:02.0 Device-2: NVIDIA GK208BM [GeForce 920M] vendor: Dell driver: N/A bus-ID: 08:00.0 Device-3: Suyin Integrated_Webcam_HD type: USB driver: uvcvideo bus-ID: 2-5:3 Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.11 driver: loaded: modesetting unloaded: fbdev, vesa resolution: 1366x768~60Hz OpenGL: renderer: Mesa Intel HD Graphics 5500 (BDW GT2) v: 4.6 Mesa 20.3.5 direct render: Yes Audio: Device-1: Intel Broadwell-U Audio vendor: Dell driver: snd_hda_intel v: kernel bus-ID: 00:03.0 Device-2: Intel Wildcat Point-LP High Definition Audio vendor: Dell driver: snd_hda_intel v: kernel bus-ID: 00:1b.0 Device-3: NVIDIA GK208 HDMI/DP Audio driver: snd_hda_intel v: kernel bus-ID: 08:00.1 Sound Server-1: ALSA v: k5.17.0-13.1-liquorix-amd64 running: yes Sound Server-2: PulseAudio v: 14.2 running: yes Network: Device-1: Intel Wireless 3160 driver: iwlwifi v: kernel bus-ID: 06:00.0 IF: wlan0 state: up mac: <filter> Device-2: Realtek RTL810xE PCI Express Fast Ethernet vendor: Dell driver: r8169 v: kernel port: e000 bus-ID: 07:00.0 IF: eth0 state: down mac: <filter> Bluetooth: Device-1: Intel Bluetooth wireless interface type: USB driver: btusb v: 0.8 bus-ID: 2-6:4 Report: hciconfig ID: hci0 rfk-id: 1 state: up address: <filter> bt-v: 2.1 lmp-v: 4.0 Drives: Local Storage: total: 447.13 GiB used: 9.64 GiB (2.2%) ID-1: /dev/sda vendor: Kingston model: SA400S37480G size: 447.13 GiB temp: 28 C Partition: ID-1: / size: 116.6 GiB used: 9.64 GiB (8.3%) fs: ext4 dev: /dev/sda7 ID-2: /boot/efi size: 98.4 MiB used: 2.1 MiB (2.1%) fs: vfat dev: /dev/sda1 Swap: Alert: No swap data was found. A friend had given me an old motherboard built in 2003. I put together a computer based on that motherboard from various computer parts. The chassis from one computer, a CD drive from another computer, a hard drive from a different computer. An old graphics card from I don’t know where. I was able find two ram sticks totaling 500 MB that would fit on this computer. I was able to install antiX21 nonpae 32 bit OS on this computer. I am typing this post in Palemoon. I check my email and get the local weather radar without any problems using Seamonkey on this computer. I use ytfzf to watch youtube videos at 240p resolution. Any higher resolution is too much for this old machine. So this frankenstein computer is almost 20 years old running the latest Seamonkey and Palemoon on antiX21. How cool is that?
Also, I have a windows partition that runs windows 7. I was able to hook up an old 3.5″ floppy drive. I was able to load some old DOS chess games on some 3.5″ floppy disks. I run those old DOS chess games directly using windows 7. No need for DOSBOX when you have the original DOS.

I’m back on my 2011 17-inch Dell Inspiron today, using antiX-21 Libre respin 32-bit. The cpu is 64-bit, but 32-bit antiX runs with about half the memory. The kernel is Linux-libre, and there’s an Atheros AR9271 usb wifi dongle providing the internet with libre drivers inside the kernel. For an 11-year-old computer, it’s still pretty snappy, and the full-sized keyboard and number pad on this laptop is very comfortable.
The usb wifi dongle has a long cord and a 6-inch-long antenna, and I tape the whole mess to the top of the laptop lid to keep it portable and keep from getting tangled in the cord.

I’m back once again with my Dell Latitude 5558 laptop today, and I’m continuing with the installed instance of antiX-21-runit_x64-base.
I noticed that I wasn’t running the most current 4.9 kernel, so I updated it and rebooted. Most of the kernels work well, and this one
is no exception.inxi -Fxz System: Kernel: 4.9.0-294-antix.1-amd64-smp x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 10.2.1 Desktop: IceWM 2.9.7 Distro: antiX-21-runit_x64-base Grup Yorum 30 October 2021 base: Debian GNU/Linux 11 (bullseye) Machine: Type: Laptop System: Dell product: Inspiron 5558 v: 01 serial: <filter> Mobo: Dell model: 086DKN v: A00 serial: <filter> UEFI: Dell v: A04 date: 08/06/2015 Battery: ID-1: BAT0 charge: 30.1 Wh (100.0%) condition: 30.1/41.4 Wh (72.6%) volts: 16.2 min: 14.8 model: Samsung SDI DELL 07G07587587 status: Full CPU: Info: Dual Core model: Intel Core i7-5500U bits: 64 type: MT MCP arch: Broadwell rev: 4 cache: L2: 4 MiB flags: avx avx2 lm nx pae sse sse2 sse3 sse4_1 sse4_2 ssse3 vmx bogomips: 19155 Speed: 600 MHz min/max: 500/2401 MHz boost: enabled Core speeds (MHz): 1: 600 2: 800 3: 900 4: 500 Graphics: Device-1: Intel HD Graphics 5500 vendor: Dell driver: i915 v: kernel bus-ID: 00:02.0 Device-2: NVIDIA GK208BM [GeForce 920M] vendor: Dell driver: N/A bus-ID: 08:00.0 Device-3: Suyin Integrated_Webcam_HD type: USB driver: uvcvideo bus-ID: 2-5:3 Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.11 driver: loaded: modesetting unloaded: fbdev,vesa resolution: 1366x768~60Hz OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 11.0.1 256 bits) v: 4.5 Mesa 20.3.5 direct render: Yes Audio: Device-1: Intel Broadwell-U Audio vendor: Dell driver: snd_hda_intel v: kernel bus-ID: 00:03.0 Device-2: Intel Wildcat Point-LP High Definition Audio vendor: Dell driver: snd_hda_intel v: kernel bus-ID: 00:1b.0 Sound Server-1: ALSA v: k4.9.0-294-antix.1-amd64-smp running: yes Network: Device-1: Intel Wireless 3160 driver: iwlwifi v: kernel port: f040 bus-ID: 06:00.0 IF: wlan0 state: up mac: <filter> Device-2: Realtek RTL810xE PCI Express Fast Ethernet vendor: Dell driver: r8169 v: 2.3LK-NAPI port: e000 bus-ID: 07:00.0 IF: eth0 state: down mac: <filter> Bluetooth: Device-1: Intel Bluetooth wireless interface type: USB driver: btusb v: 0.8 bus-ID: 2-6:4 Report: rfkill ID: hci0 rfk-id: 1 state: down bt-service: not found rfk-block: hardware: no software: yes address: see --recommends Drives: Local Storage: total: 447.13 GiB used: 14.1 GiB (3.2%) ID-1: /dev/sda vendor: Kingston model: SA400S37480G size: 447.13 GiB Partition: ID-1: / size: 78.19 GiB used: 14.09 GiB (18.0%) fs: ext4 dev: /dev/sda6 ID-2: /boot/efi size: 98.4 MiB used: 2.1 MiB (2.1%) fs: vfat dev: /dev/sda1 Swap: ID-1: swap-1 type: partition size: 8 GiB used: 0 KiB (0.0%) dev: /dev/sda2 Sensors: System Temperatures: cpu: 50.0 C mobo: 25.0 C sodimm: SODIMM C Fan Speeds (RPM): cpu: 2200 Info: Processes: 193 Uptime: 3m Memory: 7.77 GiB used: 1.03 GiB (13.3%) Init: runit runlevel: 2 Compilers: gcc: 10.2.1 Packages: 1261 Shell: Bash v: 5.1.4 inxi: 3.3.06--

I’m going through several of my “older” USB sticks at the moment and I found a couple of antiX 21 images that I used to assist in the testing of the antiX 21 implementation. I found this one interesting because I was testing the Copy_toram feature and a few other things. I was also able to include my own wallpaper in the image that I saved, so that was helpful testing too.
This one is the antiX-bullseye-a2-runit_x64-full image, which is the Alpha 2 build BEFORE we started Beta testing. I’ve long held that antiX does a great job of getting even the early builds in usable condition; this is a very good example. While not perfect at this stage, it’s usable, even now (long after the released image is complete).

I’m back today with my Dell Latitude 5558 laptop today, so that means that I can run antiX, so I’m doing exactly that.
The first is antiX-21-runit_x64-base that I’m running live from one of my USB images that I have created in the past year:inxi -Fxz System: Kernel: 5.11.0-21.2-liquorix-amd64 x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 10.2.1 Desktop: IceWM 2.9.7 Distro: antiX-21-runit_x64-base Grup Yorum 30 October 2021 base: Debian GNU/Linux 11 (bullseye) Machine: Type: Laptop System: Dell product: Inspiron 5558 v: 01 serial: <filter> Mobo: Dell model: 086DKN v: A00 serial: <filter> UEFI-[Legacy]: Dell v: A04 date: 08/06/2015 Battery: ID-1: BAT0 charge: 30.1 Wh (100.0%) condition: 30.1/41.4 Wh (72.6%) volts: 16.2 min: 14.8 model: Samsung SDI DELL 07G07587587 status: Full CPU: Info: Dual Core model: Intel Core i7-5500U bits: 64 type: MT MCP arch: Broadwell rev: 4 cache: L2: 4 MiB flags: avx avx2 lm nx pae sse sse2 sse3 sse4_1 sse4_2 ssse3 vmx bogomips: 19154 Speed: 2616 MHz min/max: 500/2401 MHz boost: enabled Core speeds (MHz): 1: 2616 2: 2430 3: 2450 4: 2395 Graphics: Device-1: Intel HD Graphics 5500 vendor: Dell driver: i915 v: kernel bus-ID: 00:02.0 Device-2: NVIDIA GK208BM [GeForce 920M] vendor: Dell driver: N/A bus-ID: 08:00.0 Device-3: Suyin Integrated_Webcam_HD type: USB driver: uvcvideo bus-ID: 2-5:4 Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.11 driver: loaded: modesetting unloaded: fbdev, vesa resolution: 1366x768~60Hz OpenGL: renderer: Mesa Intel HD Graphics 5500 (BDW GT2) v: 4.6 Mesa 20.3.5 direct render: Yes Audio: Device-1: Intel Broadwell-U Audio vendor: Dell driver: snd_hda_intel v: kernel bus-ID: 00:03.0 Device-2: Intel Wildcat Point-LP High Definition Audio vendor: Dell driver: snd_hda_intel v: kernel bus-ID: 00:1b.0 Device-3: NVIDIA GK208 HDMI/DP Audio driver: snd_hda_intel v: kernel bus-ID: 08:00.1 Sound Server-1: ALSA v: k5.11.0-21.2-liquorix-amd64 running: yes Network: Device-1: Intel Wireless 3160 driver: iwlwifi v: kernel port: f040 bus-ID: 06:00.0 IF: wlan0 state: up mac: <filter> Device-2: Realtek RTL810xE PCI Express Fast Ethernet vendor: Dell driver: r8169 v: kernel port: e000 bus-ID: 07:00.0 IF: eth0 state: down mac: <filter> Bluetooth: Device-1: Intel Bluetooth wireless interface type: USB driver: btusb v: 0.8 bus-ID: 2-6:5 Report: rfkill ID: hci0 rfk-id: 1 state: down bt-service: not found rfk-block: hardware: no software: yes address: see --recommends Drives: Local Storage: total: 475.77 GiB used: 16.25 GiB (3.4%) ID-1: /dev/sda vendor: Kingston model: SA400S37480G size: 447.13 GiB ID-2: /dev/sdb type: USB vendor: SanDisk model: Ultra size: 28.64 GiB Swap: ID-1: swap-1 type: file size: 1024 MiB used: 0 KiB (0.0%) file: /live/boot-dev/swap-file Sensors: System Temperatures: cpu: 55.0 C mobo: 25.0 C sodimm: SODIMM C Fan Speeds (RPM): cpu: 2200 Info: Processes: 176 Uptime: 24m Memory: 7.69 GiB used: 2.93 GiB (38.1%) Init: runit runlevel: 2 Compilers: gcc: 10.2.1 Packages: 1253 Shell: Bash v: 5.1.4 inxi: 3.3.06- This reply was modified 11 months, 1 week ago by Brian Masinick.

Dear caprea,
With MX Linux 19.4 Full, I use this kernel
$ uname -a Linux MSI 5.10.0-14mx-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 5.10.113-1~mx19+1 (2022-05-03) x86_64 GNU/LinuxThe kernel 5.10 is not a problem for my desktop because the speedtest with Google Chrome in MX Linux is excellent.
I also tested several environments;
fluxbox
rox icewm
zzz icewm
…
It does not change anything. The speedtest is still bad.I did a fresh installation in English (US) on another Sandisk USB 3.2 stick. It doesn’t change anything, the speedtest is still bad.
I don’t understand where this comes from.
I’m trying to get the detail a second time from MX Linux 19.4 FULL
