      Dear all,
I have an old laptop Asus F3Sg from 2008 that is my main pc (I should better say: the pc that I use more often).

In the internal hd it is installed Peppermint 10 that works fine since march 2020.

As a backup, and also heavy test I have antiX 21, full, 64 (kernel 5.10.17-antix.1): this is installed in an external hd – USB, that I use for my tests. All my data that are in the /home @Peppermint 10, are copied in the /home @antiX21 (not the configuration files of course).

      The problem:
after 1 week of tests of the programs that I mainly use, I installed the Nvidia driver from the Control Centre. All was fine.

After another week I installed Wine from the Software Installer (the antiX app centre).
The strange thing that I immediately noted was that I had to download about 1G in the process of the installation but at that moment I didn’t give too much weight to it.

At the reboot the pc went (and continues to go) in kernel panic.

So I tried to boot with the 4.9.0-279-antix.1, and with this I can boot, with the following side affect:
      – the program that I should run with wine (chess base 11) works perfectly;
      – the Nvidia driver doesn’t start;
      – arandr let me go max with 1024×768 instead 1200×800.

      The install procedure:

      1. A couple of month ago I installed antiX 21, full, 64 on an Acer Aspire one D260 and there I modified the look following the procedure described in the post “How to make antiX look like MacOS using JWM”. All was fine and on that pc all is still working properly (without wine).

      2. Using antiX snapshot I created the relevant iso.

      3. Using Crea Live USB I created the live usb.

      4. I booed the live on the ASUS and during the live session I did:
      – sudo apt update,
      – sudo apt upgrade.

      5. then I installed antiX on the external HD in a directory ad hoc created.

      6. then I copied all my files + the /home/.thunderbird/ (this directory alone is > 36 Gb)

      7. then after 1 week of tests (web surfing, mail, some libre office document) I installed the Nvidia driver

      8. after another week I installed wine and only after this 8th step I had the above described issue.

What above is the 2nd try in a row that goes in the same bad way, so I guess that the problem involves or my creation of the usb, or wine.

I’m on the verge of making a 3rd install, but I think that the problem will came back again

Many thx in advance for your help

      m

        Another attmpt:
I’ve repartitioned the hard disk with gparted. Get rid of the old /home partition. Made new root, swap and home partitions. Went throu the whole installation process again, using the text prompts of cli-installer as root from live DVD. No success.

The very same error messages as described above (i.e. hostname invalid and stopping slim failed) sill come up at shutdown and reboot. And again a black screen at reboot.

Meanwhile I’ve checked out a few videos and noticed another deviation in my boot process compared to the regular one. While booting from the DVD (antix full) I never get to the point of launching a fully functional live system with desktop environment and window managers.
The initial screen just stops after the message of starting X11. With the only two options of Alt+F1, Alt+F10 at the bottom line available.
Since my first try was with the core-CD as previosly described, I didn’t notice this difference right away. I just assumed it’s the way it’s supposed to be and continued with Alt+F1 and text installer from there.
Could this be the reason for the error
stopping X display manager slim: failed
and why it shows a black screen after reboot?
Sidenote: I was using xorg=intel and nomodeset bootparameters at startup screen because otherwise it just froze on “waiting for /dev to be fully populated”.

I’m seriously considering to do the option punranger suggested

do a “normal” install on the whole hard drive, which I think is the default option. (…) I’ve done several such default installs on hardware like that, and never had the problem you describe. Another option is to let the installer handle the partitioning of root and home, instead of the ones you prepared yourself. Just my two cents…

        Couple questions though:
Where do I find this default otpion? Which installer do I need for that – the GUI one or the cli-installer? If it’s the GUI one then I really have a problem (see above) – since I’m not getting a desktop environment and everything else one would expect launching a live OS.

The cli-installer also warns about not supporting a separate boot partition. I’m not sure I understand this correctly: Does it mean I can’t use a partition designated /root and with a bootflag I prepared ahead of time, separate from a home one?

        I’m getting really lost here.
Either I’m overlooking something and/or overthinking it,
or antiX’ installation is far too complicated for me,
or I’m too stupid for antix,
or there are multiple / too many errors (including perhaps faulty input by me) happening at once here, that I’m just unable to differenciate correctly to make it work.

Need some help and pointers please.

Here is my second-most capable laptop; it is the most capable system I have that is able to successfully run antiX.
On this system antiX 21 “runit” Base runs very well and I am able to use it without any restrictions whatsoever.

Moreover, the Touchpad.bash script I’ve written to enable or disable the keyboard touchpad works well, so when
I have a USB mouse available, I can disable the touchpad so that it doesn’t inadvertently interfere with other
          activities.

After exhaustive searches on the internet and here on the forum, I couldn’t find a solution to the situation I’m facing after changing the keyboard of my Dell Inspiron Mini 1011 netbook, which used to have an American standard keyboard, for the Brazilian standard.

Specifically, this model does not have the Control_R key, because in its place are the “slash”, “question” and “degree” options.

To remap that key, after some research, I ended up creating a file in the /usr/bin directory with the following command:

xmodmap -e "keycode 105 = slash question degree"

I included it on the session’s startup configuration file.

Apparently the solution worked for most applications except, so far, Mozilla Firefox. Another problem is that the “degree” option doesn’t work either.

I verified that AntiX 21 uses xkb as keyboard manager and not xmodmap.

However, the tutorials I checked on the internet related to xkb proved to be indecipherable for me, as I confess that I am a layman in programming.

So I had no alternative but to seek your help to find a way to solve this issue.

If anyone can help me, I’ll be grateful in advance.

I’m here with antiX 21 runit on an old, but capable HP 5000 series desktop, specifically the model s5747c.

I “think”, but I am not 100% positive, that this particular model and series was “inherited” from the old Compaq 5000 desktop series that was inherited from the assets that Hewlett Packard acquired from the [Tandem, Compaq, Digital Equipment Corporation] acquisitions. It’s a solid desktop and you can see that one of the modules in it came from a 2010 board, so my guess is that this machine was manufactured in late 2010-2011. It runs quite well with antiX 21 runit “Base”.

xmodmap -e "keycode 105 = slash question degree"

Was able to use Cheese to record a video with sound, but tried online with a friend right afterwards: opened meetup sent him an invite to meetup in google. He was able to open video but no sound from him nor was there any sound from me…

Should be able to install 19.4 in older computer tonight and try Cheese again, getting to be to late to attempt video chat tonight…

It is VIA VT8237. RAM may be to 2 GB

The screenshot of inxi you posted here says its a MSI MS-7021 motherboard and memory
its under Info: Memory:240,6 Mib, used:98 Mib

Also its probably better to use a swap partition with such less ram, even with 2GB.

                                1) the help text menu to be translated using gettext. Why is it broken into so many print statements rather than changing the first and last lines to:…

                                To question 1)
After some thinking about it I understand, it is not needed to break up the single print statement itself. Only the text string within needs to get split into separate concatenated strings, some of them translatable, some of them not. I’ll update the code, no problem, please await version update. (This modification will not change the msgids in pot file, so no translations get lost)
                                → [update: done.]

The reason for splitting this up is, it is mostly impossible to work on a text like this on transifex when it is not split up in separate strings (see screenshot, this is from a test upload following your proposal). We have seen entries, way shorter than this one, which turned out to be mostly uneditable at transifex. Have you ever tried to translate something? When the complete page is delivered in a single continuous string, linebreaks are displayed as /n only, and an insurveyable and unmanageable number of strings of blanks of different length need to be kept somewhere in between, you simply can’t keep track of position of the sentence you are working on, nor you can’t manage the formatting properly by adding or removing a blank in a specific position while constantly scrolling 20 pages up and down to search the next original sentence. Same goes when editing the msgid entry in po file locally e.g. using geany. Also here you get lost while constantly scrolling between supersized msgid and msgstr, searching for the next sentence to translate or a specific string of blanks in need of adaption. So we need to split up into individual strings for translation, one line or one sentence per msgid (see 3rd screenshot). But we actually don’t need more than one print command for this.

To question 2.) We had still no time for testing how this acts when not run by user himself. We’ll probably face exactly the problem with root you point to. We need to find a way to overcome this, checking for the “true” user in case the script is run sudoed. By now it will not obey the autoread setting stored in users home then, since it simply probably won’t read the config file when running sudoed. Moreover the problem with the symbolic link needs to get treated, so we can run it truly user-specific. I’ll think about how all this can be helped.
→ [update: misbehaviour when sudoed is fixed. Will read true users config now. (More to come)]

To issue 3.) Again, very well observed, many thanks! I can confirm this issue after some testing. I’ve checked, all variables are fine when entering the get_order function still, so the reason for this behavior is something different: When an entity is not present in desktop file or removed due to duplicat, it switches its position (e.g. gnc → nc if g is removed, n from 2→1 and c from 3→2). So the separators meant for second position are applied to what originally was at position 3, while the separators meant for first position are applied now to to the text originally at position 2.
While this is expected behaviour when entering the separators from command line for a specific order, it is not when the order is changed automatically by the logic in lines 269-277 (Ver 3.29). The separators need to get swapped when removing an entity from the order variable for a specific menu entry. Will try to write a logic for this to work properly. Other solution would be to bind the separators not to the position, but to the item (gname, cname or name). This would not need any additional logic, just interchanging the separators within the dictionary code and updating the help file. Will check what suits better.
But after thinking about it a second time, I’m sure we’ll run into another problem when replacing the separators this way (either by logic, or by binding them to the items instead of position): The menu might look a bit strange. Example:
                                --order="gnc" --sep-2a=" (" --sep-2b=")" --sep-3a=" “" --sep-3b="”"
will create a menu entry like
Office (LibreOffice) “Some descriptive text about LibreOffice here”
Since Office is found in LibreOffice, it will get removed, positions are changed (gnc → nc) so status quo it displays like
                                LibreOffice (Some descriptive text here)
while when changing the code to follow this swap of positions as sketched above it will look like
                                (LibreOffice) “Some descriptive text here”
Actually we would expect to see something like
                                LibreOffice “Some descriptive text here”

The embracement of first position looks a bit funny in menus (as long we are not used to read from right to left)
No idea how to escape this double windmill, so I believe we should leave the code for now as it is. It will be solved also once we are done with the completion of desktop files in use, so there simply are mostly no empty entries anymore.
Maybe we could create some sopisticated logic, allowing most decent display, like
»if first position was swapped from gname to name (or vice versa), keep separators originally assigned to the first position.«
»if second position was swapped from name or gname to cname (or vice versa), swap the separators the same way.«
                                and so on…
Do you believe this would be a solution, if elaborating on this path?

To #45 string entry at transifex

and write it to the applications menu file

Many thanks for clarification. The way it is described in help text is pretty incomprehensible to non native speakers. I was completely confused by the expression »applications file« (= executable) instead of »applications menu file«. Now it is clear.

To #55 string entry at transifex
If this will be dropped, we don’t need to think about proper translation anymore. I knew the way this works from the script code, like you describe it, storing the complete paths to the icon file instead its gtk name only. But again, the description »icon base name« used in help text confused me, not knowing how to translate this. Probably all this isn’t a problem to understand to an English native speaker at all…

Windows is like a submarine. Open a window and serious problems will start.

I have a problem with my desktop icons being moved around.
I’m running antiX v21 on a Dell Precision M6300 laptop, in a dual-boot arrangement. Windows 10 Pro is on one partition, and antiX 21 is on another.

I keep all my data files on external drives, in encrypted partitions. When I boot up A21, all the icons on my desktop look like white pages. When I have the external partitions mounted as drives (using VeraCrypt), I then refresh the desktop. During the refresh, the desktop finds the target files on the external drives, changes the colors of the launchers, and verifies (registers?) the links. (Those launcher links don’t work, until the desktop has been refreshed.)

My problem is that when I first boot up the desktop, many of the launchers get displaced out of the tidy arrangement I prefer to keep them in. They move up toward the top of the screen, joining rows there. Then, I have to relocate them one by one, back where I want them to be. This happens to 6 out of 21 launchers.

Counting (1,1) as being at top left in the grid, in (x,y) coordinates:
                                  {(4,3), (5,3), (4,4), (5,4), (4,5), & (5,5)} all get displaced y-2 (2 up).

Describing this differently, a group 2 wide x 3 tall gets moved 2 positions up, to reach the top edge of the screen, while retaining its internal order.

This doesn’t cripple the machine in any way… But, it’s a daily nuisance.

I’ve attached a screenshot, showing how I want the arrangement to be. The last 2 columns of the middle block are what get shifted up to the top when it happens.

Is there any way to stop this behavior?

                                  —————————–
