      You wish to run a splash screen is what you are asking? Like MX linux does.

      What version of antiX? Full,Base,Core?

      Need more info. Post a inxi -zv7 so we can take a look at your install.

      Here you go, thanks

        This is not a live session, it is a full installation. And what I was trying to say is that dillo wont load and apt update wont download files (if not wired)

          nice desktop, whats the conky code for getting “bars” of cpu/ram/swap/disk?

          Conky code for the cpubar: ${cpubar cpu1}
          cpu0=average cpu usage (not used here);cpu1 & cpu2 are used for this dual core machine here to show each cpu independently. So the lines go:

          ${color8}${cpubar cpu1}${color}
          ${color8}${cpubar cpu2}${color}

          — this give it color, and turns it back to the default color at the end of the line.

          RAM & Swap:

          ${color8}${membar}${color}
          ${color8}${swapbar}${color}

          Disk: (for root)
          ${color8}${fs_bar /}${color}
          Or for home:
          ${color8}${fs_bar /home}${color}

          Very simple.

          🙂

            I’m having difficulty keeping track of the mouse pointer on the screen, because it’s so TINY. I just now measured it while set at its maximum size, and it’s only 3/16″ tall on my screen.

            I have the impression that the pointer routines were developed on machines using a 800×600 display, or maybe even 480×360; got defined using specified absolute values of pixels – and, never changed after that.

            I’m running a dual-boot setup on a Dell Precision M6300 laptop, with both Antix v21.4, & Win10 pro. Honestly, this mouse issue always makes it feel like a small relief when I switch back to Windows, despite all the shortcomings of Windows. (I can SEE again!)

            This machine has a native resolution of 1920×1200, and I’ve already scaled it down to 1440×900.
            I really don’t want to reduce the display any further than I’ve already done.

            Is there any solution to this TINY pointer problem, other than rescaling the display; i.e., a solution which actually increases the pointer size?

              I’m running AntiX v21.4, fully installed on the hard drive in a Dell Precision M6300 laptop.

              I’m having a problem installing the Nvidia driver.

              Control Centre / Drivers / Nvidia Driver Installer calls up Terminal for its routine. There, it says it’s using su, then asks me for the Root password. BUT, the AntiX 21.4 installation routines didn’t include setting a Root password. I’ve tried entering my user password, and tried entering both “Root” & “root”. None of those works.

              —————————-

                  I think ati drivers are working now. How much of an improvement should I see? Also ram usage is normally around 70-80mb at idle which is awesome
                  I did an inxi -zv7 as root this time to see if everything is fine now 🙂

                    Titel: edited for clarity on user request.

                    Just updated antiX-19.3_386-full on frugal install again after restoring the system from an older backup to the most recent kernel and did a complete system upgrade. When looking into the system info I feel somewhat uneasy now:

                    So there are 3 severe vulnerabilities left, if I read this output correctly.

                    The intel microcode installed seems to be most recent version available:

                    $ apt-cache policy intel-microcode
                    intel-microcode:
                      Installiert:           3.20220207.1~deb10u1
                      Installationskandidat: 3.20220207.1~deb10u1
                      Versionstabelle:
                     *** 3.20220207.1~deb10u1 100
                            100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

                    Did I miss the correct kernel update to be safe from the vulnerabilities?
                    Kernel: 4.19.0-222-antix.1-686-smp-pae i686 bits: 32 compiler: gcc v: 8.3.0

                    Or is this specific kernel not completely patched against these three types of vulnerability? Should I install a different one?

                      I always have hundreds, maybe thousands of these strange entries present in dmesg output, but I didn’t care until now (other tasks were more pressing):

                      This is not new, it probably has started when I switched the notebook from antiX 17.4.1 to 19.3 last year. Interresting thing is: There is no issue with the network connection, eth1 is WLAN, and it connects fast and fine and the connection is most of the time rock stable. Nevertheless, I believe this unnecessary constant background activity takes some system load, which could be used in a better way…

                      Anybody around who knows what this is, where originates it, and how to stop it?
                      Or is this behaviour as designed, intended and needed and correct behaviour?

                      Didn’t find much useful on it searching the forum and the web.
                      As said before, there is (and was never) no issue with using the eth1 wlan connection, it works fine always, except for these strange log entries.

                        Cpu usage and temps are because I did this command while it was still updating and upgrading. Now Im wondering if kernel 5.x will work but thats for another day 🙂

                        @ModdIt that sounds interesting ^^

                          Im doing whole disk wipe (filling with 0s which Idk what that means but hopefully it means total wipe). I will sure try to do the updates to the live usb in other pc I havent thought about that 🙂
                          Yeah I bought more ram for the laptop a month ago to max its capacity of 512mb. For a laptop of that era (came with windows 2000) it was pretty good I believe, in todays standards tho… not so much.
                          If default install fails I will try gparted as you suggest and make a root, a home and swap partition. I’ll come back with news in some hours because this will take a bit

                            Stubborn beast of a machine you have.
                            Please do update the installer, released version had some bugs.
                            The packages you definitely need are antix-installer installer-data-antix not sure if you will need cli-installer-antix
                            unless the graphical setup totaly fails that is. If you just do apt update apt install above packages it should
                            hopefully pull in anything else needed. Trouble is your device sorely lacks RAM so I am unsure if that is a viable approach.

                            One tried and effective work around would be to run live on another machine, upgrade system then remaster with the antiX tool
                            before another install attempt.
                            Case where I wish I was not far away and could just drop by with the netbook and a freshly updated and remastered stick..

                            Several days ago I did an install where the process was at 12% for ages, I think because I set the installer to check the disk,
                            in the end, after about an hour, for a rotating 160GB 7200RPM disk the process went on to waiting for user input which can also
                            be confusing, to me anyway. If unsure just tap enter to see if the system reacts..

                            Should that fail please try with gparted.
                            make / (root) /home and swap, you will need swap due limited available memory then for next attempt
                            set the installer to use those partitions without reformatting, use ext 4 except for swap, finaly install grub to MBR.

                            If you get that far and the grub install fails boot live and try to use the grub repair tool. Again set install to MBR.

                              In you reply you said you were not sure 21 would run on a PII?
                              What version would be better suited?

                              When saying “recent” I meant any recent antiX version, 17,19 or 21.
                              But as you have proven: 21 boots into gui, it is obviously able to run on even a PII (always thought a PIII was minimum for antiX…)

                              21 was really slow at times, and even crashed / locked up

                              I believe this is rather due to lack of RAM:
                              RAM: total: 145.4 MiB used: 95.8 MiB (65.9%)

                              There is literally no program you could start without running into swapping.
                              Your system will constantly page memory to the swap (disk), so you will need lots of patience on your system.

                              And with not more than
                              bogomips: 601
                              you shouldn’t expect high speed, even when antiX is extremely optimised for resource saving functionality. This PII @ 300MHz hardware is slow, and you can’t get more out of it as what is inside. As a rule of thumb from my experience: an everyday usable system starts with 2GB RAM, and something about 2000 bogomips, with a dedicated graphics card (no shared memory). And it doesn’t make any difference whether it is 32 bit or 64 bit, but 32 bit will give you a hard time in future probably, since for more and more programs are no security updated versions available for 32 bit any longer (which has no real technical reason, but they simply don’t support and provide it)

                              In case you have to rely on this slow PII@300MHz hardware, no access to a faster and more recent system, you can try to optimise the configs and settings to prise the best out of your box under antiX. In this very special case best is to wait for answers from people here around having more experience with this class of machines.

                              Windows is like a submarine. Open a window and serious problems will start.

                                  So uhm, the athlon desktop decided to stopped working after the first install and did not solved the grub error. The core 2 duo I did the first instalation which caused the first grub error only boots the iso in virtual mode 1280×1024 which would be fine but if I try to install it to a usb it gives me a “failed to prepare required partitions” when trying to format root. And it wont go pass trying to format swap. I tried formating the usb, using other usbs, other pcs, other formating tools and software but nothing works. This is starting to be a little of a headache not gonna lie. I used super grub2 disk which only showed me windows 7s boot option. Also tried rescatux (from same website) but it got into an infinite loop and wouldnt boot (I tried both 0.74 and 0.73 with same result).
                                  Im starting to run out of ideas guys. I dont know why this old laptop wont accept antix. Maybe due to screen resolution or refresh rate idk really. I only have 3 options left at this point: Use a virtual machine to run the iso and install to usb then (idk if possible), keep looking for help everywhere, unetbootin???
