Curious if you tried Sparky Linux yet. Since you Like LXDE.
Actually i still don’t know if i like LXDE just yet as i’ve seen it in LIVE mode only…
Apparently i’ve downloaded SparkyLinux v6.0 because of it’s duality supporting both the i686 and x86_64 material, hoping to find ‘bootia32.efi’ in case a crude patch might prove necessary, besides also copying some /i386-efi/ resources as i vaguely reecall. Somewhere it mentioned LxQt, no big deal. FossaPup95 might have worked wonders if it could have completed its “frugal” installation, which inspired my a desire to install Ventoy on the eMMC and simply swap .ISOs around instead of enduring the whole patience-challenging process. My notes say i had to pass 4 menu levels before accessing the display settings with SparkyLinux, by the way…
Right now i wish i could better explain issues that made me move further with even more testing but this i ain’t getting any younger myself. These things can become exhausting when failures pile up and there’s no reward joys to compensate… Zorin felt promissing at 1st, still didn’t stick neither. Etc., etc.
Does some unexpected “HCi0” timeout error matter? Also, more input: how about including GrUB-Customizer as pre-installed!
Mint and Fedora too slow, Bodhi’s ‘ubi-console-setup’ utility crashed. Ubuntu Mate v20.04.3 (LTS Focal) installed fine, well enough to auto-selectect the proper screen anyway, but i removed it a couple days ago once tired of blank/black displays then BlueTooth problems. Another Lubuntu tweak is AntiVirusLiveCD v39.0 of February 20, still on the to-list so far.
Not to mention the “Extra Luxury Edition” in LXDE wasn’t exactly feeling like an invitation – i’m reading notes at random and there’s 4 ~ 5 times more to remind myself and it’s now diner time…
Salix, ZenWalk, Absolute… LibreElec, Debian Live! … Slakware v15.0 itself, etc.
Appologies again, thanks for sharing feedback while expressing enthousiasm and moral support. The guy’s energy (mine…) may just prove somewhat depleeted after having the initial climax from hope. Long ago Windows was the same and DOS before it, in any case each day needs a fair dose of victory to save our sanity.
Good day, have fun!!

Was looking in to this some more, my answer was certainly only covering some facets and only typical on one hardware setup.
Toms Guide also reports Firefox , (non ESR but engine is same) using slightly more ram than chrome, in that test
Edge which was also included and chrome based came out showing best, that was on windoze but still interesting to
read. Leaves me wondering how much time and effort went in to fitting the two together so as to be able to claim a
more efficient browser. A test on Linux might differ. We realy should also state how we are reporting memory usage, I use top and htop rather than just relying on my conky.
There were some differences in result.Especialy newer users might find the output of top and htop confusing, below will hopefully help.
VIRT – the total amount of memory accessible to a process, includes RAM, Swap and shared memory being accessed.
RES – is the most accurate representation of how much resident memory or physical memory a process is using.
%MEM – represents the percentage of physical RAM used by a particular process. My GPU is also certainly not idle when browsing, I can hear that from fan speed and see reported temperature changes
depending on pages loaded. Complex subject.March 5, 2022 at 9:51 pm #78586In reply to: Chrome vs Firefox

Hi, pretty much impossible to make a fair comparison as so many factors and settings are involved. I get opposite results with regard to indicated memory usage but a massive, often gigabyte sized cache with chrome based browsers. I do a scripted delete every login. Reason: The cache was so large on a user machine that the desktop would no longer load.
Another factor is how graphics processing is setup, acceleration on by default in chrome so a lot of processing is offloaded to a GPU when present. I have it off as it caused desktop freezing with my particular config and machine. Predictive prefetching is yet another factor. My personal facet is use the browser you are happy with, make it as secure as possible, block ads and java when you are able. Unless you run in to massive swapping or other memory related issues that is, then you may find pale moon more useful.March 4, 2022 at 11:58 am #78527Memberandfree
I have written several times (recently here) about the serious problems I faced while using the 4.9 kernel in two old laptops, problems that forced me to use the 4.4 kernel, which is not supported anymore.
The good news is that no such problems seem to exist in antiX-21. The 4.9 kernel seems to work fine, at least as regards the one of the machines.System: Kernel: 4.9.0-294-antix.1-486-smp i686 bits: 32 compiler: gcc v: 10.2.1 Desktop: IceWM 2.9.6 Distro: antiX-21_386-base Grup Yorum 31 October 2021 base: Debian GNU/Linux 11 (bullseye) Machine: Type: Laptop System: TOSHIBA product: Satellite 2450 v: PS245E-03TE0-GK serial: <filter> Mobo: TOSHIBA model: Portable PC v: Version A0 serial: <filter> BIOS: TOSHIBA v: Version 1.30 date: 03/20/2003 CPU: Info: Single Core model: Intel Pentium 4 bits: 32 type: MCP arch: Netburst Northwood rev: 7 cache: L2: 512 KiB flags: pae sse sse2 bogomips: 5585 Speed: 2793 MHz min/max: N/A Core speed (MHz): 1: 2793 Graphics: Device-1: NVIDIA NV17M [GeForce4 420 Go] vendor: Toshiba driver: nouveau v: kernel bus-ID: 01:00.0 Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.11 driver: loaded: nouveau unloaded: fbdev, modesetting, vesa resolution: 1024x768~60Hz OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI nv17 x86/MMX/SSE2 v: 1.2 Mesa 20.3.5 direct render: Yes Audio: Device-1: Intel 82801DB/DBL/DBM AC97 Audio vendor: Toshiba driver: snd_intel8x0 v: kernel bus-ID: 00:1f.5 Sound Server-1: ALSA v: k4.9.0-294-antix.1-486-smp running: yes Network: Device-1: Realtek RTL-8100/8101L/8139 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter vendor: Toshiba driver: 8139too v: 0.9.28 port: ce00 bus-ID: 02:09.0 IF: eth0 state: down mac: <filter> Device-2: Qualcomm Atheros TP-Link TL-WN821N v2 / TL-WN822N v1 802.11n [Atheros AR9170] type: USB driver: carl9170 bus-ID: 1-3:2 IF: wlan0 state: up mac: <filter> Drives: Local Storage: total: 93.16 GiB used: 9.03 GiB (9.7%) ID-1: /dev/sda vendor: Toshiba model: MK1032GAX size: 93.16 GiB Partition: ID-1: / size: 89.65 GiB used: 9.03 GiB (10.1%) fs: ext4 dev: /dev/sda1 Swap: ID-1: swap-1 type: partition size: 1.5 GiB used: 280 KiB (0.0%) dev: /dev/sda2 Sensors: System Temperatures: cpu: 75.0 C mobo: N/A Fan Speeds (RPM): N/A Info: Processes: 119 Uptime: 31m Memory: 1000.4 MiB used: 382.9 MiB (38.3%) Init: SysVinit runlevel: 5 Compilers: gcc: 10.2.1 Packages: 1288 Shell: Bash v: 5.1.4 inxi: 3.3.06March 4, 2022 at 6:43 am #78507Topic: [SOLVED] antiX-21 update problem

Hello,
Well i remember vaguely about having to edit text in desktop objects that didn’t come with an icon at times. Long long ago, **elsewhere**!
The reason i tag Linux as “Fix once Break many” is because such work got rendered useless with a next update…
But the creator(s) or ‘GrUB2’ gave us all the tools we need and YOUR antiX 21 release gave it some fair justice, as far as i’m concerned the potential has been demonstrated beautifully.
Thanks for the tip about the ‘ft10-transformation’ package for my native language, you’re quite right to mention Linux Mint actually, but its life was short although its responsiveness felt seriously improved in comparison to Windows 10 – which is the end of the road on my CherryTrail tablet anyway…
Linuxium looked promissing until an automatic update killed it, too bad GrUB installs prove so fragile!
Other OSes gave me trouble even locking me out of my own stuff, etc. This tablet ain’t going back to Windows in any case, i’m quite willing to flush Microsoft before it flushes my Intel i3 machine this next summer.
Relatively to PulseAudio, all Linux i tried always make me install ‘PApRefs’ because its a main function of the computer in here: display TV and manage wireless (BT) headphones that may come in pairs, especially with “open ear” types like the bone-conduction units. Any Linux i choose has to meet these requirements as a minimum, so i salute your sense of fairness while the margin gained remains an asset.
IMO antiX 21 compared nicely to Fossa Puppy Linux v9.5 and i like having tools around as Synaptic, etc., not to mention although Slackware 15.0 is freshly released some antiX respin of it would be of no help, ’cause Slackware officially announced a defavorable position toward hybrid 32-64 boot-loaders exactly.
Debian 11.2.0 does indeed come with a ready-made binary called ‘bootia32.efi’ and distros as Linuxium started to include it in their 64-bits .ISOs for the purpose of compatibility exactly, and it turned out i DIDN’T need to worry about such patch-work just to enjoy a GrUB boot menu from antiX 21, so i gave it some time.
But…
My appologies, the news are bad this morning. The thing is both display monitors went blank and hence i started downloading alternatives again, so i’m back to the slow process of creating a new USB thumbdrive only to erase it. SparkyLinux seemed slightly more agile than Linuxium, while FossaPuppy simply won’t complete booting, perhaps in reason of some driver for eMMC storage – FAT32 partition & frugal mode still failed.
Not to mention the 128 GB uSD flash drive doesn’t exist at boot time, unfortunately.
I did have an Atom N270 around too but it died last year, on another hand my HP-48 calculator stays on my desk since late ’93 when i bought it…
One been replaced almost naturally, the other will leave an immense void when its turn comes. Which by the way reminds me i’ll want to run an HP-48 emulator someday, sooner than later hopefully! …
Thanks for the additional suggestion. Slitaz being Slackware-based, as i recall, it won’t be possible to patch it with ‘bootia32.efi’ unless i compile it myself – and that’s a No-No! Maybe later, much much later when there’s nothing else to do.
There’s a grandma machine that could benefit from what i’ll find eventually. In the meantime here’s what i can contribute with as a newbie on planet antiX:
Monitor resolution can get wrong and direct right-click desktop access would help a bunch, instead of going through multiple menu items until the obscure ‘ARandR’ utility pops up, ’cause i garantee grandma wouldn’t have known, so my guess is a short descriptive word besides “ARandR” might be a good start. Or mention it on the GrUB splash screen? …
Please take no offence if my intervention seems like a hit ‘n run, i don’t know myself what’s next except many more thumbdrive swaps at the moment. Fingers crossed!
Who knows, next time i may relay a 2nd expression of gratitude, in the name of a grandma dropped like rotten cabage by Microsoft Windows XP…
Good day, have fun!!

February 21, 2022 at 8:47 pm #77832Topic: [Solved] Bluetooth File Transfer not working in antiX 21…
in forum SoftwareMemberrfinco
I think I’ve found an issue with Bluetooth in antiX 21
A situation came up where I would need to transfer a file from my tablet to a laptop or cell phone away from any other kind of support. Bluetooth seemed to be ideal for this, and I wanted to assure that I understood the Bluetooth file transfer process by performing the operation between my Samsung Android Tab 10.1 and a laptop with antiX 21 installed.
I tried several times to transfer a small (9MB) .mp4 file from the tablet to the laptop. The tablet and laptop were able to pair OK, but the file transfer attempt kept failing with the following error message at the tablet:
Connection failed!
Unable to start Service DiscoveryAfter failing several times to transfer a file from the tablet to the laptop, I decided to try transferring a file from the laptop to the tablet. That attempt also failed with the following error message at the laptop:
Error occured
name org.bluez.obex was not provided by any .service filesAfter concluding that I may not be doing something wrong, I tried a couple of other distros (antiX 19 and MX Linux 21) in live sessions, both of which were able to transfer files using Bluetooth OK.
In the previously mentioned “situation”, I was able to transfer the .mp4 file from my tablet to another person’s cell phone without any problem. I guess nobody else has a need to use antiX 21 for Bluetooth file transfer, but things should work, so I thought it worth putting on the table.
Here’s what my laptop looks like:

But if you want to try an old 4.14 kernel, just to see if it works for your old PC, maybe you can try the old MX kernel 4.14 (.deb common + header + image)
Thanks a lot. I installed only the image (I never install headers):
$ sudo dpkg -i linux-image-4.14.0-3-686_4.14.13-1~bpo9+1mx17+2_i386.deb“md5sum” command seems to work without any problem (as I have wrote, this was a serious problem as regards 4.9 kernel).
If I reboot while I’m connected to the net (wired or wireless), there is a noticeable delay until the “sign-in” fields of slim appear, but finally they do. No such a delay if I disconnect before rebooting.

How to Search for AntiX solutions to your problemsFebruary 16, 2022 at 8:50 pm #77560In reply to: Antix installation on usb flash drive
Memberioann
Thank you for your replies. These observations were common in four systems in total. Below I provide information about the system I am currently using, as requested. It is a relative new system. Antix runs from Transcend Jetflash usb 3 stick connected to a usb 2.0 port for better thermal behavior. The other three machines is a lenovo thinkpad E460, an asus e210ma modern n4020 celeron netbook and an old asus eee pc single core atom netbook. Oddly the old atom loads the desktop smoothly most of the times.
I attribute those issues to flash drive installation of the operating system. A flash drive is legendary slow accessing and/or writing many small files at once. I believe that a little more time is needed for every service to load and be ready before launch of graphical environment. This may also be associated with the custom nature of antix desktop construction. At least, after six months of frustration I can happily use my antix systems.$ inxi -Fxz-r System: Kernel: 5.10.88-antix.1-amd64-smp x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 10.2.1 Desktop: JWM 2.4.0 Distro: antiX-21_x64-full Grup Yorum 31 October 2021 base: Debian GNU/Linux 11 (bullseye) Machine: Type: Laptop System: LENOVO product: 20AVA0CLGM v: ThinkPad L540 serial: <filter> Mobo: LENOVO model: 20AVA0CLGM serial: <filter> UEFI-[Legacy]: LENOVO v: J4ET93WW(1.93) date: 05/30/2018 Battery: ID-1: BAT0 charge: 24.9 Wh (76.6%) condition: 32.5/47.5 Wh (68.3%) volts: 12.0 min: 10.8 model: LGC 45N1161 status: Charging CPU: Info: Dual Core model: Intel Core i5-4210M bits: 64 type: MT MCP arch: Haswell rev: 3 cache: L2: 3 MiB flags: avx avx2 lm nx pae sse sse2 sse3 sse4_1 sse4_2 ssse3 bogomips: 20752 Speed: 2594 MHz min/max: 800/3200 MHz Core speeds (MHz): 1: 2594 2: 2595 3: 2595 4: 2598 Graphics: Device-1: Intel 4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics vendor: Lenovo driver: i915 v: kernel bus-ID: 00:02.0 Device-2: Acer Integrated Camera type: USB driver: uvcvideo bus-ID: 1-1.6:4 Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.11 driver: loaded: modesetting unloaded: fbdev, vesa resolution: 1366x768~60Hz OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI Intel HD Graphics 4600 (HSW GT2) v: 4.5 Mesa 20.3.5 direct render: Yes Audio: Device-1: Intel Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor HD Audio vendor: Lenovo driver: snd_hda_intel v: kernel bus-ID: 00:03.0 Device-2: Intel 8 Series/C220 Series High Definition Audio vendor: Lenovo driver: snd_hda_intel v: kernel bus-ID: 00:1b.0 Sound Server-1: ALSA v: k5.10.88-antix.1-amd64-smp running: yes Network: Device-1: Intel Wireless 7260 driver: iwlwifi v: kernel port: efa0 bus-ID: 02:00.0 IF: wlan0 state: up mac: <filter> Drives: Local Storage: total: 325.69 GiB used: 45.67 GiB (14.0%) ID-1: /dev/sda vendor: Intenso model: SSD SATAIII size: 238.47 GiB ID-2: /dev/sdb type: USB vendor: SanDisk model: Cruzer Fit size: 58.73 GiB ID-3: /dev/sdc type: USB vendor: Transcend model: JetFlash Transcend 32GB size: 28.48 GiB Partition: ID-1: / size: 23.86 GiB used: 7.65 GiB (32.1%) fs: ext4 dev: /dev/sdc1 Swap: ID-1: swap-1 type: partition size: 4.06 GiB used: 0 KiB (0.0%) dev: /dev/sdc2 Sensors: System Temperatures: cpu: 46.0 C mobo: 40.0 C Fan Speeds (RPM): cpu: 0 Repos: Packages: 1728 Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/antix.list 1: deb http://mirror.telepoint.bg/mxlinux-repo/antix/bullseye/ bullseye main nosystemd nonfree Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/bullseye-backports.list 1: deb http://deb.debian.org/debian bullseye-backports main contrib non-free Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/debian-stable-updates.list 1: deb http://debian.otenet.gr/debian/ bullseye-updates main contrib non-free Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/debian.list 1: deb http://debian.otenet.gr/debian/ bullseye main contrib non-free 2: deb http://security.debian.org/ bullseye-security main contrib non-free No active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/various.list Info: Processes: 159 Uptime: 8m Memory: 7.5 GiB used: 834.9 MiB (10.9%) Init: SysVinit runlevel: 5 Compilers: gcc: 10.2.1 Shell: Bash v: 5.1.4 inxi: 3.3.06 Bus 002 Device 003: ID 0781:5571 SanDisk Corp. @marcelocripe –
I had a little time this evening to do a couple of tests of the 32-bit iso of your remaster. Here’s what I have for you.
Test on Gateway MX3210 laptop.
This laptop is my only machine with a VIA graphics controller. It is an VIA CN700 series [S3 UniChrome Pro]. The driver chosen for Xorg at boot is “openchrome”. There is no driver listed for the general driver.
Video is set at 1280×768
Sound is VIA V8237. It works.
Wifi and Ethernet are built in. Built in wifi is Broadcom BCM4318. Did not try it. Used a Belkin USB wifi dongle instead. Belkin loads as Belkin FSD7050 Ralink RT2571W and uses the rt73usb driver. Wifi works.Connman did not find my wifi. Switched to Ceni. It took a long time but it did find the wifi and connected.
This machine has 489M of RAM available so I did not try FirefoxESR. The CPU supports SSE2 so the current version of SeaMonkey will run. But I could not get it to install on the LiveUSB. I installed Netsurf instead and browsed to the antiX forum. It works fine.
Played a music stream with PMRP. Works fine. Streamtuner2 will probably also work fine but I did not take the time to set it up.
Switched to the JWM desktop. Then back to IceWM. Works fine.
Used Repo manager to select a repo. Used antiX updater to update and upgrade. Works good.
Shutdown and move tests to Pentium-III desktop.
Here’s the system info for the Gateway laptop

Thanks, so let’s sort out now how to exactly customize partitions. Swap is a different story, I will use a swap file, so irrelevant now.
Is it the correct question How should sda1 be prepared (flagged) in my case?

Do I need to install grub even if there is no other OS than antix installed?
Yes, you do.
If you have nothing else on your hard drive that you want to keep, just use the default option to install to the full hard drive…
You also probably should create a swap partition, at least the size of your RAM.- This reply was modified 1 year, 2 months ago by PPC.

I have written several times (recently here) about the serious problems I faced while using the 4.9 kernel in two old laptops, problems that forced me to use the 4.4 kernel, which is not supported anymore.
The good news is that no such problems seem to exist in antiX-21. The 4.9 kernel seems to work fine, at least as regards the one of the machines.System: Kernel: 4.9.0-294-antix.1-486-smp i686 bits: 32 compiler: gcc v: 10.2.1 Desktop: IceWM 2.9.6 Distro: antiX-21_386-base Grup Yorum 31 October 2021 base: Debian GNU/Linux 11 (bullseye) Machine: Type: Laptop System: TOSHIBA product: Satellite 2450 v: PS245E-03TE0-GK serial: <filter> Mobo: TOSHIBA model: Portable PC v: Version A0 serial: <filter> BIOS: TOSHIBA v: Version 1.30 date: 03/20/2003 CPU: Info: Single Core model: Intel Pentium 4 bits: 32 type: MCP arch: Netburst Northwood rev: 7 cache: L2: 512 KiB flags: pae sse sse2 bogomips: 5585 Speed: 2793 MHz min/max: N/A Core speed (MHz): 1: 2793 Graphics: Device-1: NVIDIA NV17M [GeForce4 420 Go] vendor: Toshiba driver: nouveau v: kernel bus-ID: 01:00.0 Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.11 driver: loaded: nouveau unloaded: fbdev, modesetting, vesa resolution: 1024x768~60Hz OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI nv17 x86/MMX/SSE2 v: 1.2 Mesa 20.3.5 direct render: Yes Audio: Device-1: Intel 82801DB/DBL/DBM AC97 Audio vendor: Toshiba driver: snd_intel8x0 v: kernel bus-ID: 00:1f.5 Sound Server-1: ALSA v: k4.9.0-294-antix.1-486-smp running: yes Network: Device-1: Realtek RTL-8100/8101L/8139 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter vendor: Toshiba driver: 8139too v: 0.9.28 port: ce00 bus-ID: 02:09.0 IF: eth0 state: down mac: <filter> Device-2: Qualcomm Atheros TP-Link TL-WN821N v2 / TL-WN822N v1 802.11n [Atheros AR9170] type: USB driver: carl9170 bus-ID: 1-3:2 IF: wlan0 state: up mac: <filter> Drives: Local Storage: total: 93.16 GiB used: 9.03 GiB (9.7%) ID-1: /dev/sda vendor: Toshiba model: MK1032GAX size: 93.16 GiB Partition: ID-1: / size: 89.65 GiB used: 9.03 GiB (10.1%) fs: ext4 dev: /dev/sda1 Swap: ID-1: swap-1 type: partition size: 1.5 GiB used: 280 KiB (0.0%) dev: /dev/sda2 Sensors: System Temperatures: cpu: 75.0 C mobo: N/A Fan Speeds (RPM): N/A Info: Processes: 119 Uptime: 31m Memory: 1000.4 MiB used: 382.9 MiB (38.3%) Init: SysVinit runlevel: 5 Compilers: gcc: 10.2.1 Packages: 1288 Shell: Bash v: 5.1.4 inxi: 3.3.06$ sudo apt-get update Hit:1 http://deb.debian.org/debian bullseye-backports InRelease Hit:2 http://security.debian.org bullseye-security InRelease Hit:3 http://ftp.cc.uoc.gr/mirrors/linux/mx/antix/bullseye bullseye InRelease Hit:4 http://ftp.gr.debian.org/debian bullseye InRelease Get:5 http://ftp.gr.debian.org/debian bullseye-updates InRelease [36.8 kB] Reading package lists...
