In reply to: Freeze after suspend

      Hi Brian,

thanks for your reply. At first, I couldn’t get to the grub menu, but I eventually succeeded, and then was able to boot. The reason I started messing with kernels is that my system freezes regularly after suspend. I haven’t been able to find a kernel that doesn’t. At the moment, I’m using a 5.10 kernel, but also the 4.9 kernel freezes the system after suspend sometimes. How to prevent this?

i would speculate is that the excessive disk i/o activity may also be associate with solid state drive hardware

Nope nothing to do with an SSD, if you had a fast rotating disk you could hear the head seek click.
The installer, it was adopted at a late stage just before release and a problem overseen..

If you do not accept the fact that some services were found to have been started without neccesity you will never fix
        your issue.
More background info and reading regarding conmann. A tool many like.
        https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/wifi-with-connman-antix-19-2/page/7/#post-72056
        More info and reading
Updating your system will fix some of the issues, regarding info and assistance from the forum others.

The only way I have found to date to get rid of spurious disk and network activity, dump conman for ceni, conmann pings
a microsoft server, if it is unable to get an answer forever at rapid intervall.
Switch off all services which are not essential to your user case.
Use nearby time servers so NTP time synch activity is short as possible. Make sure BIOS battery is OK on older devices
        or clock may drift excessively.
Stop all logging, which can be a disadvantage.
Set your system to swap only when absolutely neccesary. I have 8 GB Ram, only see swapping while attempting to compile
a browser or working with Nikon Raw images which are more than double my memory size. for example.

          Hi there,

I just tried to install Antix 21 on an old Acer Travelmate 4000 laptop.
This is a 32 bit laptop with Centrino M processor.

I had MX running before, but guessed that Antix would be better suited for this machine.

I started Antix from a USB stick and I’m running live so to speak. I choose all default options.
I tried to boot with forcepae option, because experience has learned that this processor apparently misses that flag.

          Sofar, Antix works extremely s-l-u-g-g-i-s-h

Although Conky does not display much processor activity everything goes in slow motion.

Typing : half of the characters are missing (I’m a 2 finger typist…)
Touchpad : cursor slowly drag along,
clicking : half of the time clicks are missed

The information from inxi -zv8 comes in slowmotion in the terminal, block by block of 6 lines or so.

          What can this be?

          Any help highly appreciated.

I’m a Linux user for a couple of years. I know a thing or two from cmd line use, but I’m a newbie on Antix.

Problem: Even though I’ve used live-usb maker to make a secondary writable stick, and answer the text-based menu for things like timezone, static persistence, swapfile, from=usb etc, when I reboot, it acts like I am still in the original live-usb mode with root and demo user running with the default passwords.

As a troublshooting step, I would not trust “reboot”. Instead I would first full shutdown // poweroff (and ensure the pre-existing liveUSB has been detached prior to restarting).

My further suggestions here will be somewhat limited, as I’ve near-zero experience with booting (U)EFI.
In advance, I would not discount the possibility that you’ve managed to flesh out some dormant edge-case bug within live-usb-maker or within one of the live scripts residing inside the antiX initrd.gz

Getting tripped up on something with AntiX CORE 21 on my uefi-only box – maybe you can spot my error:

Problem: Even though I’ve used live-usb maker to make a secondary writable stick, and answer the text-based menu for things like timezone, static persistence, swapfile, from=usb etc, when I reboot, it acts like I am still in the original live-usb mode with root and demo user running with the default passwords. Note that I supplied my own new passwords originally when asked by setup after indicating my persistence choices which created the new root and home files. These choices were made on the secondary writable stick, not the original which was just a dd of the iso from the repo.

I more or less followed the same procedure when I made a stick using the BASE iso. No problems there with it recognizing my new passwords, so I’m stumped at what step I’m missing with core.

The ONE thing that is different however, that might be a cause, is that on my box, I have to manually edit the menu option (2nd one which prompts you with text menu choices) by changing the kernel parameter to “nosplash” and using F10 to boot out of grub.

Also note that after using AntiX-cli-cc to make the live usb to the secondary stick, after reboot I only have ONE choice now to boot, not the usual plethora of other options to choose from. Is that normal?

I only have to edit that grub stanza with nosplash with core. I don’t need to do this with base.

But maybe that’s not the reason/bug? Or am I just missing something particular to core that I’m overlooking?

I used AntiX-19 for 3 months, booting in 4~5 seconds.

After a fresh installation of AntiX-21 (full version), using the “5.10.57-antix.1-amd64-smp” kernel, all my boots take quite long time : after the message “Waiting for /dev to be fully populated…”, my computer does not show anything else during 1 min 20 sec, and then finally boot.

I tried to delete the boot parameter “quiet”. What can be found around the message :

Using make-file style concurrent boot in runlevel S.
                Starting hot-plug events dispatcher: udevd
                [ 4.295284] udevd[597]: starting version 3.2.11

Synthesizing the initial hotplug events (devices)...done.

                [ 4.325922] udevd[597]: starting eudev-3.2.11

The only boot errors (from “dmesg”) are :

                [ 4.438878] nvidiafb: unknown NV_ARCH
[ 69.920365] Bluetooth: hci0: HCI reset during shutdown failed

Also, since this problem is propably due to some of my hardware :

                  Hello,

I use antiX Fluxbox on a frugal install on a laptop. I boot this frugal install with a live-USB. I have to manually select the “frugal” grub entry I use on a daily basis, and I would like it to be the default entry.

Here is the /boot/grub/grub.cfg file on the live-USB. The default entry is for now the second one (“antiX-21-runit x64-full (30 October 2021)”):

                  #------------------------------------------------------------------
                  # file: /boot/grub/grub.cfg for the Live version of antiX
                  #
                  # This file can get updated automatically on a LiveUSB via the save
                  # feature in the text menus. It is possible to break these updates
                  # by editing this file.

(the colors can be changed according to taste)

I present here the antiX-Conky modified by me
                    to the community.

I have included above the Greek spelling of antiX as published by @anticapitalista. If you don’t want that, you can comment out or comment in lines 1 and 2.

Below I have included the simplest Accuweather weather from @TBG. This can also be removed, if you don’t want it, by commenting out lines 135-144. The last line 145, a blank line, must be kept.

For those who want to have the weather, the following preparations must be made:

                    1. in a terminal enter this command
                    git clone https://gitlab.com/teobigusgeekus/Accuweather_conky_script.git
that will create the directory “Accuweather_conky_script” in your /home, where the script and the necessary data will be.

                    2. open a browser with the link address: ( https://www.accuweather.com/ ) and search your city. When you find it, copy the whole line.(Ctrl+l)

                    3. go to the directory Accuweather_conky_script and search the script “accuweather” and open it. In lines 12-16 you already see such address lines. Paste your copied one according to this pattern. Comment the line from Kastoria from (#). Save the script and close it.
Check and make the script executable.

                    4. create a directory .fonts in your /home.
Download the font monofur with your browser at the address ( https://www.dafont.com/search.php?q=monofur ) into your download directory. Unzip the .zip file and copy/move the monof55.ttf and monof56.ttf into the newly created and hidden folder .fonts . Do the same with the fonts ConkyWeather.ttf and ConkyWindNESW.otf from the Accuweather_conky_script directory.
If you have these 4 fonts in .fonts you have to make your system familiar with them. To do this, open a terminal again and enter the command (as user):
                    fc-cache -v -f
                    That’s it.
Now you can call the conky in the terminal (I assume you have killed an already running conky before, otherwise this new one will be on top).

Since the terminal is still open
                    conky -c ~/.conkyrc1 &
You see how the script fetches the data. When it’s done, the conky will appear on the desk. But maybe Conky is too fast and the data is “getting used to”. Therefore kill the Conky in a second terminal with
                    pkill -xf "conky -c /home/user/.conkyrc1" &
wait a bit and start it again in the first terminal after you killed the conky process there with Ctrl+c.

                    Have fun!

nice desktop, whats the conky code for getting “bars” of cpu/ram/swap/disk?

Browsers like firefox can be set to use no RAM memory when closed and/or release memory after a certain time period,
in general they keep chunks of ram for further usage. Firefox will continue to perform offline operations until
either closed or the operations finish. It can also be set to stop performing operations on closing.
All browsers use caching, again settings in config apply.

In many distros and windoze system settings are to keep data in ram for further usage calls but release it if space needed
for applications started later. Intent is to speed up processing.

Big subject as there are or can be kernel compile settings involved. Limits can be defined in Pam which further complicates matters.

Setting to swap only when absolutely neccesary also has an influence, all my users have SSD or terrible MMC so set to swap only if
                        absoluteley neccesary.

My facit is I run different distros at times, as long as my swap setting is respected I have no issue with Ram usage other than at
start after logging in, I dislike resoursce hogging desktops or processes running which are superfluos to my usage case..

I’ve just installed antiX-21_x64-full Grup Yorum 31 October 2021. I’ve installed deadbeef using the package manager, but it won’t run. When I try from the command line, I get “starting deadbeef 1.8.8” and that’s all. I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it from the command line, but that didn’t work either.
When I tried to install deadbeef-gtk3 I got a “broken pipe” error:

                          $ sudo apt install deadbeef-gtk3

I successfully installed deadbeef-gtk2, but, as I mentioned, nothing happens when I try to run it.
This computer is a real dinosaur, but I did get it to run using Debian 10 (Bunsenlabs Lithium).

                            Re-Edit my first post

                            Hi, good evening…

Past 3 days i just tried Antix for old laptop ( Acer Aspire One ). Im pretty much newbie (zero exp for linux). So i am kinda lost here.
So im setting it up for my dad. I am trying to make simple desktop for elder to understand as possible
and light computing work like office and so on.

Please allow me to explain step by step what i already tried to achieve new antix system first from personal perspective
(Windows User) just in case someone need it in the future.

                            1. I set Desktop -> Other Desktops -> Space-IceWM
And set theme from settings -> themes

                            2. Disable 3 monitoring at the system tray because i feel more distraction factor than function.
I mean we already have conky right?

Menu -> Setting -> Preferences -> Taskbar -> DisableTaskbarShow CPUStatus, MemStatus & netStatus -> Save Modifications.

Idk is that proper way but looking good.

                            3. Control Centre -> Desktop -> Choose Wallpaper -> Change Static to Random wallpaper timed -> Apply -> Close

                            4. In my case Sound not work properly so go to AntiX Control System -> Hardware -> Sound card chooser -> test sound (succeed for me)
-> Adjust Mixer -> Headphone, Speaker, Pcm? to 100 and Pre Amp is 20.

                            5. Setup Screen Brightess because i feel too bright. In my case backlight brightess not saving after reboot.
So i go to AntiX Control Panel -> Session -> User Desktop -> add

                            ## Brightness Startup
                            backlight-brightness -s 50

and save. Took me half day try and error around this issue and credit to username dave for solving it.
After that i make toolbar for backlight brightness

Menu -> Application -> AntiX -> IceWm Toolbar -> Add Icon -> Backlight Brightness
and voila, i can set brightness from Desktop. 😀

                            6. In my case my repo not work properly because ip6 so i need disable ip6 system wide i guess?
Pretty much hard time too for this issue. T_T
                            So i follow this instruction : https://linuxhint.com/debian-disable-ipv6-on-interface/
After that repo looks functional at this point. Dont know in the future.

                            6. Edit some /etc/sysctl.conf not sure about this one, just found it because disable ip6 issue and
uncomment all additional setting ( maybe can i uncomment all of them? ) assuming its kinda anti netcut
                            or something?

                            7. Setup DnsCrypt by this Instruction https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/is-it-possible-to-install-dnscrypt-proxy/#post-63474
Not sure about point 5. Is this the correct way or not

                            edit dnscrypt-proxy.toml ->
                            – server_names = [‘quad9-dnscrypt-ip4-nofilter-ecs-pri’, ‘quad9-dnscrypt-ip4-nofilter-pri’, ”, ”]
                            – block_ipv6 = true (because im using ip4)
                            save and exit

Ps: Reboot first time it didnt work IDK why, maybe need 2x reboot??

And i try go to menu -> Internet -> Connman UI Setup -> Details Tab -> Configuration -> Nameservers ->
                            127.0.0.1

                            Reboot again and it worked!
And im happy this time. 😉

                            8. Add app shortcut to my desktop
Right click File Manager or AntiX FAQ in my desktop -> new -> Desktop App -> (yourchoiseapp) and thats the shortcut.

                            9. Enable double click
Right click File Manager or any shortcut -> Desktop Setting -> untick single click opens file in general and desktop tab.

And yeah thats it and im pretty much happy with Antix at this point. But i still have several issue.

The The AntiX Fans Wiki presents a table of boot parameters to use with a live system. One of them particularly caught my eye:
                              toram=store.

Under “Live Boot File Loading” on that page, toram
appears under the heading “Load to RAM”. The ‘store’ option is
                              described thus:

toram=store will also only load the linuxfs file and keep
the connection with the live media (no “eject” of the Live
media). Useful if you want to keep the Live device connected because
you want to access (or save) files using the LiveUSB-Storage feature.

However, I’ve tried this, and the Live-usb-storage
                              folder isn’t present.

Has anybody else tried this feature? I’ve looked a bit at the
                              ‘/live/init’ and ‘/etc/init.d/live-usb-storage’ scripts. I’ve included
                              here:

                              1. The contents of this boot’s /live/config/initrd.out
                              2. The contents of /var/log/live/initrd.log
                              3. The contents of /var/log/live/live-init.log
                              4. The output of inxi -F

Recently I was able to clone an antiX frugal installation onto a USB stick (in hopes of creating
another frugal installation off of it, but that’s another discussion). Anyway, the USB installation (USB 2.0!) works so well that I’ve decided to stick with it for now! (Pun was accidental…)

Dynamic root persistence works fine. Along those lines, I’ve gotten
used to using the Live-usb-storage folder, and so seeing that there’s
a toram=store option gives users the best of both worlds.

                                  Hi, good evening…

Past 3 days i just tried Antix for old laptop.

                                  1. First disable 3 monitoring at the system tray because i feel more distraction factor than function.
I mean we already have conky right?

Menu -> Setting -> Preferences -> Taskbar -> DisableTaskbarShow CPUStatus, MemStatus & netStatus -> Save Modifications.

Idk is that proper way but looking good.

                                  2. I set zzz-icewm and Theme

                                  3. In my case Sound not work properly so go to AntiX Control System -> Hardware -> Sound card chooser -> test sound (succeed for me)
-> Adjust Mixer -> Headphone, Speaker, Pcm? to 100 and Pre Amp is 20.

                                  5. In my case my repo not work properly because ip6 so i need disable ip6 system wide i guess?
Pretty much hard time too for this issue. T_T
                                  So i follow this instruction : https://linuxhint.com/debian-disable-ipv6-on-interface/
After that repo looks functional at this point. Dont know in the future.

                                  6. Edit some /etc/sysctl.conf not sure about this one, just found it because disable ip6 issue and
uncomment all additional setting ( maybe can i uncomment all of them? ) assuming its kinda anti netcut
                                  or something?

                                  7. Add app shortcut to my desktop
Right click File Manager or AntiX FAQ in my desktop -> new -> Desktop App -> (yourchoiseapp) and thats the shortcut.

                                  8. Enable double click
Right click File Manager or any shortcut -> Desktop Setting -> untick single click opens file in general and desktop tab.

                                  ———————————————————————————————————————————
And yeah thats it and im pretty much happy with Antix at this point. But i still have several issue.

                                  1. Some key not work properly Like escape, some of f key and n key. (i think its hardware issue) And yeah i write this thread without
n key working. And using copy paste trick. (painfull)
Is that possible i can using bluetooth keyboard and mouse keyboard?
I cant open bluetooth manager -_- its kinda not working
(priority issue) already tried click bluetooth manager and bluetooth adapter and nothing happened. Try saw in conman too and nothing.

                                  2. I have generic bluetooth speaker. Can i using it too?

                                  3. My touchpad not working too (optional but glad if i can fix it)

                                  4. I saw Youtube Video Player from multimedia, can i change default resolution to 720p or 480p. I cant see
how to change it. Just in case my dad want explore Antix in the future

                                  5. Any simple way to install and using DnsCrypt? Just for quad or next dns. Avoid mitm especially my ISP.
But i assume this give me headache, lol.

                                  6. Any basic security advice for Antix system?

please assist me to solve the issue. Thank you in advance.

                                  my system
Using AntiX-21 (should i downgrade to 19 or 17 for old computer?)
                                  Legacy if im not mistaken

                                  and from inxi

                                  $ inxi -Fxz
