Out of curiosity I just installed the 5.10.88-antix.1-amd64-smp-1 kernel and headers with synaptic and the build looked good, I didn’t reboot until now, though.
      Please wait.

In the driver-installer you have to check to look for the backports, too.

Hey, sorry, I didn’t know if you needed the output before or after having the Geode driver installed.

That was the output with it installed, and I can’t start Xfce with it (black screen). I have uninstalled it and now I’m running Xfce. Here’s the output now:

This marathon is solved !! I now have a new working install of Manolis Glezos 19.3 on this laptop, which at present I prefer to Grup Yorum 21, as I am still finding odd things 19.3 offers that 21 as yet does not.

I have to thank all of you contributors, but most of all anticapitalista, whose advice and suggestion to run the install using cli-installer AFTER making sure the installer was updated. I ran a general update with apt update then apt dist-upgrade, and requesting grub to be installed on the efi partition, all went just as he said it should and I now have this troublesome little laptop back in working order with all the advantages that the step up from 17 to 19.3 offers. And I have my root swap and home partitions where I wanted them, and grub in the efi partition.

The question remains, what does the cli-installer know that the graphical installer doesn’t ?

It just shows what a fine community of users experts and enthusiasts we have in this forum, so thanks once more to all of you, and especially to anticapitalista !

Best wishes, and sorry from me for my being so slow and stupid at times !!

I may now have something more positive to offer after running partition checks.

              Partition table type is gtp.

esp partition is formatted fat32, boot and esp flags set. I swapped off, unmounted all 3 partitions, esp, /root, /home. Submitted checks for esp, /root, /home. Ran these checks. The esp check fails with ‘grow file system to fill the partition 00:00:00 ( ERROR )’ ‘GNU Parted cannot resize this partition to this size. We’re working on it!’ (see Gparted diag 1). Gparted has only just created this partition a few minutes ago.

Formatted esp partition to fat16, reran check, check finished ok. I have read that the esp partition must be fat32 format. Gparted seems to think it must be fat16.

/root partition is formatted ext4. Ran /root partition check. Root check fails with ‘partition already mounted’, (see Gparted diag 2). Root partition was NOT mounted when I ran the check. The check option is greyed out if the partition is mounted and cannot be selected. Something mounted it after I set the check going. Nothing else was running.

I’m not sure where all this is leading but I smell a possible problem with either Gparted, or with the install routine, or with the information I have regarding their use, or perhaps my shortage of it.

Please disregard the remark I made earlier about serial checks failing then succeeding when repeated, I am going round in circles in a maze of screenshots and partition creations formats and deletions!

I wrote a new partition table type MS-dos, created esp fat32, swap, /root ext3, unmounted, ran the install on existing partitions – failed formatting /root.

Wrote new partition table type gtp, created esp fat32, swap, /root ext4, /home ext4, unmounted, ran check on each in turn, esp check fails, root check fails, home check fails. Then ran same checks in reverse order, home check ok, root check ok, esp check fails. I will repeat this tonight just to confirm what I have just written.

I am not sure how to invoke the cli-installer. When I select the installer icon it does not offer me a keyboard install, only the graphics install. Should I run cli-install as a bash from a terminal?

I now feel as if this laptop is in perfect working order as the check routines I ran which completed ok, ran for long enough to suggest that the HD was being processed at block level, 64g is not large. The esp partition check which fails did so immediately, although 256mb is not many blocks to read.

Hi Guys, I installed antiX-21 Grup Yorum 32-bit version on my HP mini 5103 laptop and looks like that there is some issue with FAN control as it never stops even without CPU work… It looks like that it is regulated to low RPM at startup (booting, log-in), after some time (usage) with higher CPU load RPM increases correctly but never go back to low RPM even there is no CPU load. Then CPU is cool down to 35dC which I think is unnecessarily low.

It is also strange as I can see 1GHz clock freq for CPU, but Intel Atom N550 should have maximum clock 1.5 GHz.

It seems that some virtual sensors below do not change at all (temp2, temp4-6)

Do you know what could be a problem and how to solve it? What are the target temperatures for this CPU?

Functional keys (backlight, sound intensity, etc.) are more or less functional.

                  Thanks in advance!

                  # pwmconfig version 3.6.0
This program will search your sensors for pulse width modulation (pwm)
controls, and test each one to see if it controls a fan on
your motherboard. Note that many motherboards do not have pwm
circuitry installed, even if your sensor chip supports pwm.

We will attempt to briefly stop each fan using the pwm controls.
The program will attempt to restore each fan to full speed
after testing. However, it is ** very important ** that you
physically verify that the fans have been to full speed
                  after the program has completed.

/usr/sbin/pwmconfig: There are no pwm-capable sensor modules installed

I am having problems with the wifi on my Dell Latitude D620 laptop running antiX 21.
I have always used a cable with it, but I would like to also have the wireless working.
Conman is showing the wireless as connected.
The internet is extremely slow and times out on most sites. It will open antiX forum site after a 30 sec wait. It will not open gmail or news sites. With a cable, sites open in 2 to 5 seconds.

                    Below is the inxi -F:

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts about Thinkpads and trustworthy models. I will keep my eyes open.

                      Moddit,
I don’t think it is a heat problem, because the issue seems to occur within the first few seconds or minutes after start-up. If it gets past the first 30 minutes, it will usually run all day.

I replaced the Bios battery a few months ago. But it didn’t make a difference. The old battery was a little low, but not dead.

I did try the 5.10.xxx kernel (with similar issues). I don’t remember whether I tried the 4.19.xxx kernel (but probably).

Edit: An important note, which was left out of original: I am running this unit without a main battery (directly from AC power supply/charger). It is being used as desktop, never portable.

Well, then I also use Google Translate. 🙂
I entered the commands, but there was no change.

Would it be a way to go back to antiX 19 and then use the “testing” branch for current software? With antiX 19 I did not have these problems, but many programmers were outdated (for example Scribus, which I need in a newer version).

But actually I would rather solve the problem correctly and learn.

Ans swappiness set to a minimum for SSD.

sdb has a fat32 187 Mib Partition marked boot and esp

grub is installed to sda MBR option so the efi part is likely unused. It is from an older installation of antix 19.

See what Mint does, hopefully the MMC is not dead, replacing is a job for a good shop unless you have a closely temperature controlled
hot air oven and experience. Shop repair is risky and overly expensive too with board replacement being main option offered.

Yes I did go right through to the end filling in passwords and auto-login switch, but really when it fails formatting /root it does so very soon, usually before I have got my fingers to the next button. When it hangs I have also gone to the last screen but it is still hanging with everything filled in. In any case it still has the /home partition to deal with after it finishes with /root, before (I guess ?) it begins to copy system files across.

I do appreciate your point and this afternoon will run through an install once again to check out what I have just said. Honestly I must have tried different approaches about 50 times but the result is always one of two, fails formatting /root, or hangs.

I am almost certainly mistaken but feel that formatting /root when it is unnecessary is not required, and the installer could have an option to Preserve /root besides any others.

Just as an aside I have a Toshiba laptop with a 3-core AMD, quite modern, and installed 17.4 on it in a trouble-free process about 2 years ago. Sadly I am not in UK at the present so cannot look at the partitions I created but they are likely to be just Swap Root and Home. I knew nothing about EFI bck then (and still don’t!).

After learning a little about the UEFI system browsing the www, I find that most laptops made during the past 10 years expect UEFI system to be catered for in their booting arrangements. It does not seem to have made much inroad into the PC market yet.

UEFI seems to be the product of a latter day ‘Gang of Nine’ attempt to regulate boot management when multiple operating systems are present, one wonders if the Windows fraternity or related manufacturers are behind it, as it seems to do nothing that Grub does not do. I am not sure if UEFI excludes Grub or if Grub can function within the UEFI envelope, as the antiX installer offers either MBR or EFI as Grub install locations. It looks as if Grub code is embedded in UEFI files at some point during install.

A partition table conforming to either MS-Dos or GTP standards is suggested but GTP is recommended because of the greater number of partitions available. MS-Dos is limited to 4 (I always thought it was 3, maybe the the EFI partition is not counted ?). The EFI partition used as /boot will need to store about 30mb of code for each installed system. The recommended total size varies from 200mb to 500mb however (seems a lot of excess ?). It must be formatted Fat32 with EFI and Boot flags set. I created one of 256mb which has to be adequate (?).

I have created the partitions I thought appropriate for an install on this laptop including an EFI partition as above. The install fails formatting /root. I also tried leaving the installer to create partitions to chosen % for /root and /home, fails with an endless hang, I gave it 10 minutes or more. Htop showed little or no cpu activity throughout. The log shows no new activity after the necessary cleanup, so it’s doing nothing it seems?

Therefore I have to conclude that either I have missed something fundamental (most likely) or the installer does not handle partition preparation adequately, or maybe something is missing.

I think (my opinion only) that the installer should not attempt formatting any partition marked Retain, and this marker should be available for all classes of partition including /root, giving the user more flexibility and getting the installer straight into copying the new system across.

How can I run a bad block HD check independently of a partition format, when there is no system installed?

The attached screenshots show a bespoke install using partition table gtp, Efi partition 256mb with boot + EFI flags, Swap, /root ext4 and /home ext4, which fails formatting /root.
Also a default install with 12% /root and the rest /home, which hangs endlessly with no apparent activity.
