Installed apt-notifier using the Package Installer and uncommented “apt-notifier &” line in ~/.desktop-session/startup.

I just finished updating to Sid. But I noticed I enabled the deb-multimedia.org repo. I remember reading that can cause problems. Maybe I shouldn’t have enabled it. But so far everything looks good in antiX-21 Sid.
Here’s the inxi report:

I am playing with my 32-bit systems today and on this machine when I look at the inxi report I see it says
base: Debian GNU/Linux bookworm/sid
and I am wondering what that actually means for this particular system. When I installed this system I used antiX-19 and the “testing” repos. I sometimes get confused about what I am running and have mentioned that I am running a “Sid” system in the past. But my repos are the “testing” repos and not “sid”. So, I thought I am actually running Debian and antiX Testing.
So, this report confuses me somewhat. Why is it reporting that it is “bookworm/sid”?
If my repos are Testing do I automatically update to Sid when the version changes from Debian 10 to Debian 11? I’ll do some research and try to read up on this myself. But this subject of testing and sid has always confused me. Does anyone care to give me an explanation of why the inxi report says Sid but my repos are Testing?
Thanks,
Seaken64

most people won’t know what it means- perhaps “antiX devs advise users to download and use non Runit versions
Not my call but I am surprised at sudden advice to stick with sysvinit in the first place. I have a feeling troubles Koo (and possibly Moddit) had could have been unique, as not widely reported, and perhaps not having anything to do with Runit per se but rather perhaps with something in the install or certain update.
I have been running Runit 21 on a variety of machines, old and much newer, and never encountered any such issues.
Fact, I am running not-installed. Just Live, Frugal and internal SATA Live. Both USB sticks and SATA disks (both spinning and SSD). Not a single occurrence of such issue. I think I remember Koo mentioned it was running fine until some update installed recently. This means something but not pointing to Runit architecture IMO, since recent updates did not change runit system architecture.
My long IT experience taught me that if an issue pops up after some update then back out that update to return to previously working fine system, not swap to a different system…
Just my opinion…

Partly off-topic:
Well, I’ve seen Koo here in the forum for quite some time. I also had my share of problems with operating systems:
-In Windows (98, maybe 95) my brother got a new dedicated graphics card- it installed fine in Windows, ran great, but, after rebooting, it refused to run… It was a driver’s problem, and he had to swap the card for another one…
-In several distros I had to reinstall, simply because I messed something up so bad that I did not know how to solve it and it was faster than posting a question on a forum…
-In MX Linux- it refused to work with the Nvidia driver, at reboot, I was always stuck in the terminal (no X)- I redid the same steps, over and over, with tiny variations. sometimes repeating steps- until, out of the blue, the Nvidia driver began working!- that’s still the MX install I have on my secondary partition (MX 17)
-More to the point: In antiX- while trying out my ft10 transformation pack in all 3 floating window managers, I noticed something very strange- my CPU as always maxing out at 100%, and RAM usage kept increasing some 4-5mb for very 5-10 seconds- the computer was so slow it was almost unasable- I rebooted- no change- I tried to change to another window manager- no luck- Conky kept flashing “antix” and then “antiX min-fluxbox)- What the…?
I was beginning to think that was to right time to upgrade to antiX 21… until… I went to user management, removed auto-login, rebooted. ant the log-in window, I pressed F1 and chose IceWM- and it logged in to IceWM as usual- no 100% CPU usage, no increasing use of RAM! I logged off, selected Fluxbox, logged back on- 100% CPU usage, RAM usage always increasing- at that point lx task-manager informed me that the script to change desktop was running in a loop, starting a new instance every x seconds…
Log off and back on to IceWM. Purged fluxbox, reinstalled fluxbox, logged back on again- and I got the normal fluxbox desktop I’m running right now.
What happened to Koo’s antiX install? I have no idea.
Like I have no idea why Windows refused to work with that graphics card, long ago, and why Mx 17 refused to work with nvidea, and why so many strange stuff happened in my computers over the years- sometimes, once in several millions, a power surge can make the wrong byte to be recorded – messing up your computer in an impossible to foresee way.
Maybe something similar happened to Koo, maybe not. It’s impossible to know- but antiX works for many people, all over the world, in every kind of computers (ranging from stuff that is over 20 years old to stuff that’s 20 hours old)- but, like Forest Gump used to say “S**t happens”. when that happens, usually the forum is here to help us ordinary folks, but when all fails- reinstall or, if that fails to succeed, downgrade! That’s why I’m not using antiX 21 as my daily driver- I’m waiting for every small wrinkle to be ironed over…

Been a while, but have a new install of antiX21. Wanted to look at some log files so favorite apps antix->Applications->System->Rox Filer as root.
Would not open any files, just blank. So, terminal->su->rox, rox-filer would open any file.

I have ANOTHER old laptop; this one is an older HP, circa 2008:
It WORKS, but it’s not fast; those THREE YEARS between the Thinkpad X201 and this model make a HUGE difference and so does the hardware.
I’m not sure that I’d run too many things OTHER than antiX on this box:

Hello,
first of all I’d like to say thank you for such a really great distribution without any unnecessary stuff but such an excellent choice of pre-installed applications (especially no PulseAudio but XMMS included and init!) !
Before I used to use VectorLinux, but there haven’t really been any updates for around 5 years now, which unfortunately is a dealbreaker for web surfing.
I intend to use antiX as my daily driver OS and it seems to check all the boxes, except for one thing – I use my PC for multimedia quite heavily, and playing high-bitrate video files doesn’t really work. SMplayer keeps buffering all the time after playing a couple of seconds even though I have already increased its buffer. I should add that I have installed Xfce4 and am currently using it.
I’ve got two separate internal hard drives; one for the system (swap, root, and home) and another, which holds said high-bitrate video files, just mounted using the file manager-provided mountpoint (for now). Also when opening a folder on said second hard drive or when copying files, the performance is incredibly meek (around 8MiB/s). That hard drive is semi-server-grade and hasn’t seen a lot of use; before I used to get up to around 190MiB/s!
Then I noticed that the HDD LED is rapidly blinking all the time, even when the system is idle. Yet lsof shows only mplayer using the video file from the second hard drive’s file system while playing, nothing else.
First I suspected conky’s hard disk activity monitor, but terminating conky made no difference. Terminating the SMART daemon made no difference, either.
What else could be polling the hard drive all the time then???
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi.
Sorry for the delay. I thought the last message I read yesterday was a confirmation, and not a question.
As I see that you have no EFI partition on your system, antiX 19 was installed using MBR as bootloader. Please confirm.
Disable all options for sbd (which I asume is the live USB), as we are not interested in installing the bootloader there.
sda1 (your root antiX), set is as root (in the “Use for” column).
sda2 is swap. Set it as swap. you can decide if you want to preserve it or not (preserving it keeps the UIID for the partition and doens’t reformat it).
sda3 is your home. You have already done it properly, setting it as home in the “Use for” column, and keeping it intact in the “Format” column (you have already selected it as “Preserve, which s the correct option).
Remove all “For use” options in the sdb section, continue the installation and select to install grub in MBR, when the time comes.
I would still recommend you backup your files from the home partition first, as I never trust the installer of any distroo.

Watch cache size in chrome browsers, even ungoogled chromium can very quickly reach Gigabyte levels as i found out yesterday
while trying to figure out what caused some problems on a live system with no swap memory.
Google chrome was way worse, it cached the kitchen sink.
i.e. for non english speakers everything possible and bogged down extremely quickly.
