      Dear Eismckwadraat19,

Thanks for sharing the result of the inxi -Frz command. Now other people will be able to help you more easily.

I really appreciate your helpfulness and patience.
I followed your advice and both the touchpad and the wifi are working now 🙂

I’m glad I can help and that you don’t give up testing the newest kernel. If the official ISO with kernel 4.19 didn’t work, I’d still have a gift that Xecure (you’ll know about it) built, the ISO pseudo-antiX-19.3_x64.iso.

The helpfulness on this forum is really great.
It gives me inspiration to help out, perhaps with translation work.

You will be very welcome to the team of volunteer translators that is being formed. Please see the private message for guidelines on how to participate in translations. Thanks!

5: following error message: failed to format required partitions

I have already experienced this message, before proceeding copy your installation data with the 4.9 kernel. I managed to solve this using GParted, go to Menu > Applications > System > GParted, enter the password “demo” (without quotes), in the down arrow of GParted select your disk ID-1: /dev/mmcblk0 model: HCG8e size: 58.25 GiB, select one of the partitions, click on the trash can icon, repeat this procedure on all, on the swap partition you will need to right-click and click on the “Disable Swap” option to then be able to delete the partition. When you delete all partitions create as many partitions as you want, for example one to hold / (or rootantiX), another partition to hold /home and the third linux-swap or if you don’t want to separate the operating system (/ or rootantiX) of your data (/home) on different partitions, just create two partitions, one for (/ or rootantiX) and one for linux-swap. When preparing the partitions click on the letter “V” icon to apply the changes. When you receive information that all changes have been successfully made, close GParted and return to the antiX installer.

‘Regular install using entire disk’ select and put the ‘use disk’ on the internal memory (was on the usb stick)

I don’t like to use this option, I prefer and recommend the option “Using a custom disk layout”, in the screen “Choose Partitions” you can indicate which partition will install antiX (/ or rootantiX) and which will be (/home) and swap. It depends on your choice.

the translation program you use is perfect, I understand everything properly.

I am glad that these programs are allowing people to communicate even without knowing another language.

      My greetings.

      Dear Eismckwadraat19,

Obrigado por compartilhar o resultado do comando inxi -Frz. Agora outras pessoas poderão te ajudar mais facilmente.

I followed your advice and both the touhpad and the wifi are working now 🙂

The helpfulness on this forum is really great.
It gives me inspiration to help out, perhaps with translation work.

5: following error message: failed to format required partitions

‘Regular install using entire disk’ selected and put the ‘use disk’ on the internal memory (was on the usb stick)

the translation program you use is perfect, I understand everything properly.

Eu fico contente que estes programas estejam permitindo que as pessoas possam se comunicar, mesmo sem conhecer outro idioma.

      Meus cumprimentos.

          Hi,

I have swapped from good old Ubuntu 10.04 LTS to Antix 19.4 .
I have basic knowledge of Linux, but I am no nerd.
          I understand simple english.

          My question:
In Firefox (in Ubuntu) I can use “Enable DNS over HTTPS”.
Also, I can use in Ubuntu (and Puppy Linux) nameserver 8.8.8.8 .

I need this to avoid country-specific blocking of webpages.

Doing this has NO effect in AntiX.

          Why?
What can I do to solve that problem?

I don’t understand your earlier discussions with lots of cryptic data.

If you need details, I will tell you.
          I have old Notebook (Dell Latitude D410), 32-bit single-core,
with installation of your full ISO image.

          Can you help me, please?

          Thanks a lot

            Dear Friends,

I recently tried to install 19.4 on a Acer Aspire laptop, one I have been using for about 2 years with 17.4 installed. The 17.4 install went through correctly and the laptop has performed ever since as expected. This laptop does not have a separate hard drive, instead it has 64mb soldered directly on the mainboard, therefore has a fixed configuration.

Because I wanted to avail myself of the 19.4 facility to have the boot, root and home directories on separate partitions, I had to delete all the existing partitions and create the new ones according to a rough idea I had regarding sizing and placement, which on this laptop may well have been far from ideal.

The install failed at format root partition. The screenshots attached give the partition picture and details, the usage I specified to the installer, the fail message and the option I was offered a regular install using the entire disk. This option I did try, it also failed but with a long hang attempting to format something, I failed to observe what but can repeat that if required.

I tried to create an extended partition in the first instance, to contain swap root and home partitions as logical, but Gparted would not allow this, these options being ‘greyed’ out of the menu. I only tried this because I thought 4 physical partitions may be one too many. Maybe this is indeed the case? I am too inexperienced to say.

Thanks in advance for all suggestions, whether they lead to a solution or not.

Please stop talking about blacklisting. It is very offensive to the African people.

For a simple solution to such demands I am OK if we just swap the meaning of Blacklist and Whitelist. Therefore Whitelist would mean rejects or non-compliant or whatever other negative connotation intended…
This solution should be satisfactory to demands, although monetary reparations for historical use of the questioned terminology would be still outstanding…

                    Hi

I just tried this Palemoone. No, it just fills the RAM and it seems as if Palemoon doesn’t have a browser cache or the algorithms are totally bad. When I want to play a video, the RAM load goes up to almost 100% and the swap is also filled, WITHOUT the video starting. No chance with 1GB RAM!

If antiX is interested in offering users with low RAM computers a good and modern browser, then there is no way around Opera! I don’t know what these people are doing, but the result is impressive! No other browser handles the memory and cache so efficiently! With a swappiness of 40, I can open up to 8 tabs without long waiting times (5-10 seconds). Show me the browser that can do that with 1GB RAM and a swapfile of 1GB!

If you want to test it, I’ll try to send my Opera settings here as an attachment. Otherwise you have to test yourself.

To the problems with Opera and also Vivaldi:

It looks like they will find the way to play all videos again. In Vivaldi it is already done, Opera will follow. Up to then it is possible to run Opera as snap, this is working fine on Debian. I have not yet tested it on antiX and don’t know, if snap is here possible.

But I am happy, that I can go on working with Opera, as it gives me the best result with low RAM! Of course it needs the correct settings for the swapfile and the perfect settings in Opera.

I have been using live-usb with connman controlling wifi all day (including rebooting) without issues.
Are you sure it’s not something with your connection?
                        Or with the wifi driver?

I can never certify ‘I am sure’, considering these various factors in the middle. I am just judging on the base what seems logical considering the following:
                        – My internet, router provide rock solid high speed service.
                        – I am simultaneously working on three laptops on my desk. First – non-antiX Linux running Network Manager (rock solid network), Second – antiX 19.4 with Connman – no network issues, Third laptop – antiX 21 B2, with Connman with reported issues, now attempting Network Manager not successful yet…

However all three laptops are Thinkpads different models, so I cannot say for sure the Connman issues on the third one (Thinkpad X61) are not driver related, if this answers your questions. I will swap laptops and run antiX 21 B2 on different Thinkpad model to see if experience repeats…

                          3. load computer from usb stick > antix loads 1st time from live 12 gb USB stick > select legacy bios option > F5 select “p-static-root option > insert 300GB USB HD > follow screen instructions > select 300 GB USB HD (sdd2) for antiX-Persistence device > assign secure passwords > make some minor noticable changes to screen to differentiate from live boot session (ex change wallpaper, connect to wifi , install some minor apps etc) > shut off machine.

                          4. Load 12 gb stick , then 300GB USB > F5 p-static-root select > normal boot> Antix finds p-static-root device > machine loads properly (new wallpaper , wi-fi, new minor apps etc ) are all loaded. All further additional new changes (new software installations, updates, upgrades etc) are properly stored in sdd2.

So far so good, when I want to install a new “Persistence” test folder as root, I get ‘error exit status 1’ message.

                          Christophe:

I thought I may need two different persistence devices for two different machine hardware configuration purposes, I am not sure how Antix works. That’s the only reason.
For Puppy, I have only one universal persistent USB stick which works for every machine.

                          Thank you all

Regarding System76, I’ve never owned one, and yes, they are not cheap, but a friend of mine had one and he had excellent service with it, and he was always able to install whatever version of Linux he wanted to use.

This mini line: https://system76.com/desktops/meerkat is a bit more affordable than their other models, but it’s still over $500.

Regarding the Thinkpad X220, Amazon.com has two options currently priced between $240-250.

Ebay even has one for under $100, though I recently had an unpleasant experience with a used smartphone that had a bad display; at least I was able to return it.

I’ve used Swappa with positive results for phones. I bought a computer for my wife this week through Amazon and received it less than 48 hours later and it was priced well under $500.

I’ve dealt with Tiger Direct in the past; they appear to have a few reasonable deals well under $500 too

Short rapport about my first impressions of antiX21-beta2 Live from USB (intentionally without persistence for now) on a 32 bit Pentium M Notebook:

To put it in a nutshell: Great! Many thanks to anticapitalista and the dev team!

Boots straight up to desktop. This time the display is way better than in the Versions before, no blurry letters, colours are fine and well saturated this time. So the nouveau driver seems to have got some improvement meanwhile. But, and now comes the inevitable »but«, it seems to produce much more CPU load than I was used from antiX 17.4.1 and 19, especially while moving windows around by mouse, CPU goes up to 100%. I’ll have to check whether this can be solved by fine tuning the nouveau driver settings, or whether this can only be helped by installing original nvidia driver again. I’ll start another thread for this detail next days.

In this place I’d like to plead for an additional entry in boot parameter selection:
                                linux=<width>x<height>
This cheatcode is not wellknown, not even documented, (At least I don’t know of, and I believe It isn’t even in our wiki still). And then it is the equivalent to grub gfxpayload entry, which allows to set a monitor/display and screen setting in case the needed configuration was not determined correctly and automatically. I’ve spent some hours on testing different methods of setting the correct values from within a blurry desktop using first ARandR from antiX control center and then xrandr in a console window. All in vain. It was literally impossible to fix this from within antiX, so this bootcode is of real importance, worthy to get an entry in boot screen. I’m sure I’m not the single person seeing a very poor desktop without this.

This is all the technical data I’ve collected until now:

                                $ inxi -Fxzr

And now some of my attempts of fixing the resolution problem from within antiX:
                                – Delay of ca. 60 seconds after graphics mode is supposed to get switched to correct resolution (immedieatly before X-desktop should come up), screen stays black, but backlight stays “on”. Finally desktop appears.
                                – Desktop has wrong resolution, and no means to switch to correct resolution:
                                – Graphic display of is slow and generally delayed, movement of windows with mouse pointer is scattering and heavily delayed, causing 100% CPU load.
(looks like everything is software rendered by CPU instead of GPU.)
                                – Control center –> Session –> Screen Resolution (ARandR) does only show
                                1024×768
                                800×600
                                640×480
The correct Resolution of 1440×900 is missing.
Using xrandr on command line shows same result:

                                $ xrandr
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
                                Screen 0: minimum 640 x 480, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 768
                                default connected 1024x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm
                                   1024x768 0.00*
                                   800x600 0.00
                                   640x480 0.00

Trying to correct this problem by adding the missing resolution following the default steps also fails:

                                	xrandr --newmode "1440x900_60.00" 106.47 1440 1520 1672 1904 900 901 904 932 -HSync +Vsync

                                		xrandr: Configure crtc 0 failed

A short flicker at screen, but resolution remains unchanged.
                                Now again:

Next thing: What does all the dmesg stuff about vulnerabilities mean? I’ve believed antiX was safe in this concern. Can something be done to ship antiX 21 safer (or do I misinterpret this output?) Here is what inxi reported:

                                Next observation:
We see still an 3.17.x version of Claws Mail in antiX 21. This is very sad, since it doesn’t work anymore with most email providers, who meanwhile mandatory expect OAUTH procedure for accessing the account via POP/IMAP. This feature has been added in Claws Mail 3.18.0 / 4.0.0 only, so antiX 21 should really ship one of these versions, if possible.

Another thing I have to check in detail is: Playing video on any of the bundled players caueses 100% CPU load even when using material of very poor resolution, and in one case even a complete system lock while playing, I had to hard reset. Maybe this is somehow connected to the nouveau driver, since I have never seen this behaviour on any antiX before while using original nvidia drivers on 17.4.1 and 19. Maybe this can also get helped by fine tuning the driver settings of nouveau.

And now @skidoo : zzzfm is simply great. I saw it first time working now, it feels way better than spacefm. You did a great job! Many thanks!

So that’s all I can tell for now, I hope this could help you. Next days I’ll try to check the remaining functions of this notebook under this beta release, one by one, and also on the athlon XP (also 32 bit) board.

Btw, antiX 19 has proven to be rock stable here, uptime of the file server in cellar running on antiX was about 100 days, before I rebooted, merely for this beta-test now.

                                So long
                                Robin

I’ve always bought used “corporate”-grade laptops (Dell Latitude, HP Elitebooks, Lenovo Thinkpads) which are generally higher quality, easy to get parts for / repair / upgrade, etc. which are swapped out (“refreshed”) by companies looking to stay up to date with latest tech. (needed to run the latest Windows). These machines are generally 1 generation back from current, inexpensive (usually $350-600), widely available, cleaned & refurbed, usually only maybe a scuff or two on the lid, etc. I’ve found these great for Linux, easy to work on / upgrade, etc. sturdy and long lasting! Another big plus is that docking stations (I mostly use mine at my desk) are also easy to get and they usually have good matte screens, keyboards, and have both a trackpoint AND a touchpad (very handy)!
