*Easy to take apart and upgrade

This quality is nowadays rather difficult to find in new laptops. And this is one, among other reasons I no longer buy new models. Particularly not replaceable batteries, hard disks, memory, keyboards… Hard to take apart if you care about end result of one you take apart and put back together…
They are no longer made to be taken apart, and quite the opposite, intentionally difficult by design… They make them so most users are not able to upgrade and eventually buy a new one, advancing profits for the manufacturer and contributing to garbage contaminating our earth…
In contrast, all my older Thinkpads are made by design to be easy for the user:
      – Swap-in batteries
      – Easy access to upgrade memory and disk drives
      – Easy replacement of keyboard. I always have spare keyboards, which bought on eBay for about $20. Many Thinkpad models share the same keyboard model.
      – Easy and troublesome taking them apart to replace other components.

One such I have comes close to your form factor requirements – screen 12.1 inch, i7, SSD. Lenovo Thinkpad X220. And you can buy one on eBay for a bit more than $100, used one in great shape without disk.
But if you are looking for a new one, then it is a different price range and what you get is not easily upgradeable.
      Just my experience…

        Hello!

I am preparing new ISOS 32 and 64bits with some cosmetic improvements and refined choices. I stared about 10 days ago and was stopped by the installer crashing on my new respins when testing in Virtualbox : the installed DOES NOT SEE the storage unit!

The base I use is antiX 19.

This is what the output of the line in error looks like when I start minstall manually from the console:

        SErr #18: “lsblk: unknown column: -bJo\nlsblk: TYPE,NAME,UUID,SIZE,PTTYPE,PARTTYPE,FSTYPE,LABEL,MODEL,PARTFLAGS: not a block device\n”

I have pinpointed when and how : I had first thought it might be caused by me removing some packages that I should not have removed (it had happened before), so I reverted to a previous version I had done which works perfectly, and I restarted rebuilding on it.

Then I decided to do all I wanted in it except one thing : I didn’t update the distro before redoing the snapshot!

        And this one works!

So I reused it immediatly, installed, this time I updated, redid a respin and BAM ! This time the installer does not see the virtual disk!

This is why I am now coming here to ask for help.

I have prepared some files, screenshots, outputs of console, logs from the live where the installer fails.

        $ su-to-root -X -c minstall

          32-bit live USB:

Regarding internet connectivity. I am able to connect to internet on many of my systems except for one system, an hp pavilion ze4900. Interesting, this hp pavilion ze4900 works great and gets great wifi connectivity with antix 19 installed.

With the 32-bit live USB, it recognizes that the wifi is powered on in connman, but does not see any wifi networks.
So, in Control center > Network > Select wifi application, I switch to Ceni, then switched back to connman. And only then do I see the wifi networks. I then connect to my wifi. It then connects, but I get very poor signal. Cannot even load antixforum.com.

Then I shut down and boot into my installed antiX 19. I get good wifi connectivity. Can surf the web with ease.

So I think it might be the 32-bit B2 system on this particular hp pavilion ze4900.

Here are the specs for my system:

            64-bit live-usb.
Opera browser does not install from the package installer (on 64 & 32-bit).
Supertuxkart installs from package installer, but on modern kernel, it freezes my system. mouse moves, but clicks do not register; keyboard shortcuts don’t work.
On legacy kernel, supertuxkart wll get to offline/online account page, then freezes. keyboard shortcut to xkill works, & system recovers.
I don’t know if it’s my system that’s the cause or not; but you asked for any package installer anomalies, so I mention it.

Not sure then. I don’t have any apple keyboard to test myself what is the ideal option.
The posts I found on the net are a bit too complicated to recommend and seem to make it difficult to revert them.
The simple method, like the one in this question, seem to use different setxkbmap options to achieve the “same result”, but they never confirm if this worked at all.

If you figure it out, and have a bit of time, please share the solution here so that others may benefit.

                Hi everyone,
I’m new to Linux environment and just started to understand a bit of it with an installation of AntiX.
I’m trying to connect my wireless apple magic keyboard via bluetooth and everything is fine, there’s only one error, as I type the vertical slash key the angle brackets are shown to screen instead.
I get confused as with my usb wired kb (which has the same layout) the two keys aren’t swapped.
I’m currently using the pc105, italian variant, keyboard layout.
Does anyone have any idea about how to solve this error?
                Thanks for your time.

                    Hi again.
Checked slim + slim-themes-extra-antix as suggested, swapped from slim and slimski via Control Center > Session > Login Manager. No problem this time, quick login with both DMs and WM shows without delay. I uninstall slim again and stay on slimski. I still don’t understand why the service “slim” is still shown in “runit service manager” once the package is uninstalled, I guess it must be disabled but I can’t do it via the “runit service manager”. Waiting for wisdom to rain, haha.

                    WARNING NOW!
I manage to crash the desktop, and force re-login by running in cli as regular user:
                    service --status-all
I found the bug by chance while figuring out the slim DM status, and guessing around runit-service-manager.sh. BTW this runit-service-manager.sh works fine, it’s not the cause of the crash as I stated before.
                    Be careful please.

                        I’m oscillating between the antiX Beta 2 sysvinit and the antiX-21-runit-beta2 image;
                        running runit now.

Just updated the runit packages again. This image is looking pretty good.
Running the *.279 kernel on this one as shown in the inxi report.

Happy to see that I can switch between the various window managers and the switching, plus the functionality has been working well.
Have been using zzzFM here and in my regular use of antiX; it has been flawless in my personal use.

                            the initially proposed “respin”

Really, skidoo was not, is not, “proposing” to do this.
The OP was actually intended to diffuse the notion of doing so
“Because the “English-only” aspect so easily achievable, I don’t feel that detail, alone, merits a separate release.”

I assume the “How-to” will also work for other languages?

Yes, the bleachbit + “dpkg-reconfigure locales” + localepurge steps mentioned in the prior topics I linked are applicable to any language ~~ retain only the localization files the one (or 3) languages that are appropriate for you and your local users.

From memory, the bleachbit step reports “deleted 22,000 files, totalling 230MB”.
That is 230MB “files on disk”.
Per (anticapitalista’s?) testing, an isosnapshot operation afterward yielded an ISO which was only 30MB smaller
but “only” is relative. That 30MB difference may be significant from the POV of a “toram” liveboot user when booting a resource-limited system ~~ that 30MB shifts the threshold regarding how soon swap will be necessary. For my POV (across several years, booting liveUSB and maintaining primarily diskless workstations) an extra 30MB per snapshot, or per each full backup fileset is, cumulatively, quite noticeable.

How old is that machine? Did you ever solve it?

I’m beginning to think antiX/MX just don’t like certain hardware paired with NVIDIA.

                              @RickyRacoon,

I was not able to fix this until today, following Caprea’s input on your querry. It turns out that it is not a problem particular to antiX/MX but rather how the default driver responds to the Edid DPI settings. Probably some of those other distros addressed this for you in the settings and in antiX you have to catch it and make them config edits yourself.

This machine is an old Dell Dimension R521 with AMD Athlon 64 X2 3600+ and a GeForce 6600 PCIe graphics card. Here’s the inxi output:

Thanks to your question I was able to revisit this topic today and I tried Caprea’s suggestions. I’ve been too busy with other things to follow up on this.

@anticapitalista – would it be possible to swap xmms for DeaDBeef as default audio player? It’s already in package installer (thanks for that)- it’s a more modern and still very light player, with lot of features, but without any bloat (in my opinion).
The way I see it, the less unmaintened apps we use, the safest we should be…
also, about using or not the same roxterm GTK2 or swap to GTK3… Would there be any arm in using URXVT as default terminal? I don’t like it much, but it can be pre configured to look and act more like roxterm (the same color pattern, etc)- and it’s been in antiX already for a some time…

Regarding health of SSD, your near new ssd will not be worn out, if it is really near new.
Maybe worth installing smartctl then take a look at results. Like many electronic devices
SSD have early failure modes then errors may start to rise after a couple of years.

sudo smartctl -t short -a /dev/sdX (in place of sdX, use the name of your SSD).
This will run a short test that takes approximately 2 minutes.
When the test is complete, run command sudo smartctl -a /dev/sdX to display the results.

I never swap to an SSD as the possible very frequent writes could reduce life, on my fairly modern device
with 8GB memory I have no swap at all, fine for my usage although processing Nikon Raw images is very memory
                                  intensive.
