I’m currently testing which lightweight Linux distributions can be used to give old low spec computers a second life. My primary reason for doing this is out of curiosity and as a learning experience. I’m fairly new to Linux, and I only started looking into Linux when I was given an old Dell Latitude D610. This computer was upgraded to the maximum 2GB RAM and is now my trusted Linux machine running Linux Mint 19.3 Cinnamon. Admittedly not the fastest computer ever seen, but good and reliable.
A secondary reason for this testing is to find out if any, or several, of these lightweight Linux distributions can be used to provide people with limited financial means with functioning computers by installing Linux on donated older hardware. Most people today have access to a smartphone, and these are great for many applications, such as facebook and YouTube, but for other applications, such as word processing or editing photographs, a larger screen, a proper keyboard and a mouse can make life much easier.
For the porpose of testing, I have aquired an Acer Aspire 3100 with 512MB RAM that I’m using as a test rig. It’s upgradable to 4GB, but for the time being, I’m not upgrading the RAM, since this would defeat the purpose of my testing. So far my testing has included Lubuntu 16.04, various versions of Puppy Linux and currently I’m looking into Tiny Core Linux. From my testing so far, I have concluded that one of the most crucial bottlenecks is RAM usage. Lack of storage has been less of an issue.
Next, I intend to test antiX, and I would like to ask for advice on a suitable test setup. I would like to run antiX from a USB stick, and I would like to save changes to the same USB stick. For the download and creation of the USB stick, I can use a desktop (Dell Optiplex 990) running Windows 10 or the Dell Latitude D610 mentioned earlier, running Linux Mint 19.3 Cinnamon. I have a number of USB sticks (SanDisk Cruzer Blade 16GB) and by now I have become reasonably skilled in using GParted, so I can format them as required. After testing Puppy Linux, some of them are formated with an 11GB ext3 main partion, and a 2GB Linux Swap.
Now I would like to ask for your advice on the best antiX version to use for my test rig, and how to best create a USB stick as described. Advice on how to get started with initial setup etc. would also be much apprecieted.

There will be a connman update (buster only ie antiX-19 series) coming soon that basically reverts to using the ‘old’ way ie solution 1.
We’re testing before uploading to the repos to make sure that whatever fix a user may have applied (or not), this fix will not break anything. Those using testing/sid repos should use fix 2 as this is the ‘new’ way and will be default connman on antiX-21.
Apologies for any inconvenience caused.
BTW – A heads up to you all, there will be security upgrades to our kernels available as soon as possible. (building them as I type).
Last time, almost same network issue with network-manager test repository (into sysVinit) for MX19 😉 … the network, is like the kernel, the keybord&mouse&LCD, the terminal and the web browser, very very important.
FI: I have some errors with the kernel 5.10.52-antix.1-amd64-smp into my PC (no problem for my eepc 32 bit 5.10.52-antix 32b pae )

How to Search for AntiX solutions to your problemsAugust 5, 2021 at 6:34 pm #64391Member
Wallon
Dear All,
I have some annoying things with my new installation with two screens/monitors in antiX 21.
I’m a translator for antiX and MX Linux. For my personal comfort, I bought and installed a second 75hz display-port monitor.
I asked for help on the MX Linux forum to get my new installation (one 60hz HDMI screen and one 75hz display-port screen) working because the ArandR and Display softwares were not working properly. As usual, I used a Live usb key (Windows 10 + Rufus), I chose the Space-IceWM environment on the Live key and I did the installation on another USB3 key by saving the settings of my Live USB key. I did the whole installation in French with Linux kernel 5.
I did the installation on antiX 21 with the ArandR software. I saved the settings in the file /home/Wallon/.screenlayout/default.sh.
Here it is the code of my default.sh file.
I’m not sure if my screen on the display-port is set to 75hz because in the info full details report, there is no mention of the refresh rate for this screen.1) If you see something wrong in this file, please tell me ?
#!/bin/sh xrandr --output DVI-I-0 --off --output DVI-I-1 --off --output HDMI-0 --mode 1920x1080 --pos 1920x0 --rotate normal --output DP-0 --primary --mode 1920x1080 --rate 75 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal --output DP-1 --off --output DP-2 --off --output DP-3 --off --output DP-4 --off --output DP-5 --off2) If I automatically launch in full screen these programs for example;
– LibreOffice,
– Firefox ESR,
– SpaceFm,
– Geany,
I can’t drag and drop the software window from one screen to the other?I found a rather cumbersome procedure to move a window from one screen to another.
a) Alt + F5 (Restore)
b) With the mouse, click on the blue bar above the screen, hold the click and drag to the other screen
c) Alt + F10 (Maximize)3) Please see the screenshot attached to my message.
When I do a printscreen of either the left or right screen (pointed with my mouse), antiX merges the image of my 2 screens.
How can I make a full printscreen of one screen without going through a window selection?I would like a choice like for example;
Do you want a printscreen:
a) Left screen,
b) Right screen,
c) Merge both screens?4) How to have the taskbar below on both screens?
5) I recall that I did the installation by choosing Space-IceWM.
If I change the desktop environment for example Space-Fluxbox, I lose a screen ! I have to restart my desktop to get my 2 Space-IceWM screens back.
If I change the desktop environment for example Rox-IceWm, I lose a screen ! I have to reboot my desktop to find my 2 Space-IceWM screens.
In short, I can’t change my desktop environment. It seems that ArandR is not automatically reactivated. I say that, I say nothing, it’s perhaps another software which must be reactivated to recover my 2 screens.6) Don’t ask me to test with the Linux kernel 4 because my NVIDIA driver doesn’t work as usual. I would have to do a full install with kernel 4 and install the driver on that kernel.
Best regards,

I install 19.4 on an Nvme drive from usb which I made with DD on ArchLabs. After partitioning the drive with gparted
Had no trouble at all booting from the usb to the desktop installer or installing.
After booting to the desktop had no internet needed to do the below to fix it.There is a bug in the runit editions of antiX-19.4 (full and base) after installation via the gui installer. Fix: As root user, remove all /etc/sv/* folders EXCEPT /etc/sv/getty-* <<<<now I see errors on the tty boot screen but it works..Had an update for connman which killed the internet. But your fix got it working again. (connman is an app name for this program, been painful right from the start.) Love you Ceni
Also updated the kernel to Linux antix19 5.10.52-antix.1-amd64-smp which fixed hardware issues.
So far have install a bunch from source code.

Did you experience problems with any USB or internal drive not mounting automatically? Do you need to mount these partitions from the terminal? DO they only mount as root?
If I use a SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive 128 GB Type C USB drive, it works perfectly with my Dell Inspiron 5558. Therefore I do not suspect any USB drive issues, not with this hardware. I’ve also used other USB drives with this same hardware and they also work well.
I conclude that: 1) My system works fine with this release and so does my USB drive.
If, however, I take the exact same image and attempt to install it on some new hardware that I recently purchased, an Acer Aspire 5 Model A515-55 with a NVME SSD, I can’t get it to respond at the USB boot prompt. I find this odd because I’ve been able to install both Siduction 2021 and Debian Bullseye 11 on the Aspire with multiple different USB drives.
If it’s any consolation, I experience the exact same issue with MX Linux. I was able to install a fresh instance of the latest MX Linux 21 on my Dell Inspiron 5558 without any trouble, but both MX Linux and antiX won’t even show their boot menus on the Aspire. I have Debian, siduction, PCLinuxOS and Endeavor OS installed on it right now, and I was also able to get KDE Neon installed on the Aspire.
If you’d rather see this information elsewhere, let me know and I’ll copy the contents of this message, post it elsewhere and remove it here. For the moment, since you asked about it.

Thankyou very much Brian for your very thorough replies which are really appreciated. I think the rest now is really down to me in getting some experience/confidence with using any of the rolling versions, taking your comments into account.
To minimize risk, I do all my day-to-day tasks anyway on the fixed release antix19.4-core (non-sid) which seems as stable as a rock. I’ve included antix19.3-core-sid, and any other antix versions, on any spare drive space, in a multiboot set-up. I’ll give myself plenty of time though, until I’m at ease with the ins-and-outs of any of the rolling antiX versions, before swapping with my trusty fixed release one.
Thankyou again Brian, for your continuing help & encouragement.

Hi AntiX new friends. I’m installing AntiX for use on a Dell e6400 travel-tasks laptop. I replaced the spinning HDD with a 500GB PNY SSD. I used SysRescueCD 8.03 (on a bootable flash drive)’s GParted to create a DOS partition table and 4 partitions: 4GB linux-swap, 60GB for ext4 linux root/user, 100GB formatted ntfs for a virtual Win7-32 that I need for legacy software, and the rest approx 300GB for ext4 linux home. I downloaded the AntiX 19.4-64 full ISO and checked its MD5, burned a DVD, and booted it. During install I checked for bad HDD sectors. All went well until I got the error message “GRUB installation failed. You can reboot to the live medium and use the GRUB Rescue menu to repair the installation.” The machine would not boot, just danced a restart loop with the BIOS offering <F12> for a boot menu.
Much struggle: I don’t understand what’s the “live medium”? I could not find a GRUB Rescue menu on the AntiX DVD boot. I tried various advice from online without success: mx-boot-repair in terminal was not found. I hunted through antiX-cli-cc and the AntiX desktop menus without finding anything relevant. One post said missing flags (boot, esp) on the boot partition could cause the error, and they were indeed missing. I set them but it didn’t help.
Here’s what worked: brought up GParted again, reformatted the two linux partitions, set flags boot and esp on the root/user partition. Reinstalled from the DVD. Success!
Wish me luck setting up fixed ip internet access, and a virtual Win box. I’m liking AntiX a lot so far. My partner records music (Janis June Respect the Sign is his work), is a big Slackware fan, and hates systemd, and I have a lot of limited-resource hand-me-down machines to configure for fixed-income friends. I figure my upcoming travel is a good chance to really try AntiX in action.Happy camper, interesting world.

But 4.9 is way too old, /sys may not show the mitigation data, can’t remember. If I remember right, /sys started showing that as soon as the kernels had the mitigations, but I can’t remember the details there. I know inxi has had that feature for a long time though. Oh, I looked it up in the changelog, it was actually AntiX forums that requested and helped test that feature, back in 2018-09 or so, first inxi version to have it was 3.0.23
From Debian’s spectre/meltdown page:

Scroll down to: 32-bit PC (i386), can’t copy in tables.Pentium M is not pae, so that suggests that spectre 1 and 2 will fixed with 4.19, and meltdown cannot be fixed.
You might give some thought to picking up an older Thinkpad T420, those are pretty inexpensive used, and are excellent machines, and have a 64 bit modern cpu, handle sata, etc. I’ve gotten those for 100 bucks each, once saw someone selling them for something like 2 for 100 back when corporate buyers were moving up to next version for their corporate fleets, those deals I don’t see anymore though. I got a T400 for 20 bucks at a fleamarket, just needed replacement battery, with SSD upgrade I think it cost about 100 total, give or take. With an old spinning hitachi travelstar, it’s not a question of if, but when, your hdd fails.
I tried running pentium m for years, a T42, and finally gave up.
Hmmm, why isn’t bbcode working? Post says bbcodes are enabled, but it doesn’t use them, needs html, maybe fix that text?
Thanks for the info h2! This laptop was gifted to me by my brother so it’s just a project computer. I really like antiX and especially the usb tools. I had to install antiX using a Plop disc because for some reason the BIOS wasn’t recognizing the usb ports. It originally had windows xp on it and with xp, the usb ports weren’t recognized and the wireless nor the ethernet didn’t work. Once I got antiX installed everything worked. Well for the most part. I have had some issues but I have since resolved those issues thanks to everyone here at the forum. I do have a question. Are you saying that I need a non-pae kernel? You said Pentium M is not pae. Also are you saying no matter which kernel I use, my machine is still vulnerable to the meltdown? I’m a bit confused. Thanks

Hi, maary79
Is that the complete size of the SSD or only a partition?
With such a limited amount of space I recommend you do a frugal install with persistence instead of a “normal” full install.
This will copy all the linux system to a compressed file that will take the same amount of space as the ISO size. With persistence, you can save all of your changes, as if in a real installed system but taking a fraction of the space. You can also do a frugal install with MX Linux, if that is your preferred system.
To do a frugal install, select frugal (one of the options there) on the live boot menus.
After the frugal installation, you will need a USB device to boot into it if you don’t have a boot manager. If that is the only SSD, and it only has 7GBs of space, then you may also consider using this method descried by christophe to trick the system in thinking that your SSD is a live USB, so you can have a much easier frugal installation, using the from=hd and persistence options after installing.
If you still prefer a normal installation, try to only use one big 7GBs partition and NOT swap, as it takes extra free space.
