Two IDE drives are fine, just make sure to set the jumpers correctly and change them when the clone is done.

For laptops I use a NAS to store the hard drive image on.
Then it is a two step procedure…
Boot live USB, mount the network drive (I use NFS), then make the output a file on the NAS.
      dd if=/dev/sda of=/mnt/NAS/disk-image.img bs=512 status=progress
After swapping the drive in the laptop, boot the live USB again and remount the NAS.
Then use the image that you made to write to the new disk.
      dd if=/mnt/NAS/disk-image.img of=/dev/sda bs=512 status=progress

Yes this will clone the entire drive.
Yes the new drive must be the same size or larger than the original (if not I use the rsync option).
Note: sometimes you can shrink and move the original drive to fit the new, but this is EXTREMELY dangerous
Yes if your drive has bad spots you may see problems with dd. You can enable dd to continue on error by adding ‘conv=sync, noerror’ such as.
      dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb bs=512 conv=sync,noerror status=progress
This also may translate to a bad clone as those bad spots in the original drive will be copied with the corruption. But then again chances are it will be the same with rsync.
If there are bad spots on the new drive (or you are cloning to a questionable used drive), best to use the rsync meathod.

The only tool I know of is clonezilla (Clonezilla). Generally I do cloning the manual way.
If cloning a windows partition make sure to first fully shutdown the windows install if you do not have fast boot disabled. (hold shift when pressing shutdown IIRC)

Another option you may wish to consider using (especially if copying to a much larger drive. EX: 250GB to 1TB drive) is the count= option
You first get the size of the disk from the fdisk -l output then add that to the end of the dd command.
      dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb bs=512 conv=sync,noerror status=progress count=1234567890

Computers are like air conditioners. They work fine until you start opening Windows. ~Author Unknown

System is up to date (below).
I now took out the first four .Xresources lines, but that makes urxvt white rather than solarized, which is what I think the color package is. I also tried using only the “xcalc” and “colours” lines (the original .Xresources file). I figured out they point to separate config files. When I do that, I get an xrdb error on “line 92”, but none of these files has 92 lines. So Kinda confused now. Thanks for looking at the issue….

I think the way I am going to overcome this is to partition my physical hdd and add AntiX then CP /dev/sdaX /dev/sdb. Then I will partition /sdb to add a swap to speed the USB response time.

I tried the method of installing to USB directly from an installed linux system some time ago.
I copied a partitioning scheme from a fresh linux install, before doing that I had forgotten efi boot was needed on some nmachines. Mine for one and was unable to boot.

Setup partitions on the stick with G Parted then installed, found the system far slower than running antiX live directly, same machine same USB 2 port. I also ran sparky same way for a few hours then went back to the live running.

Now I only rarely boot in to an installed system, just use a HDD or another stick for data storage, preferably HDD due to the generaly more graceful fail mode they display.
Live stick is also highly portable which is another advantage. I do not use the major persistence options, just remaster after software installs or updates.

Biggest hurdle to running live is preselected entry to setup, it takes a bit of time for any new user to realise that the system needs first menu entry, at least on Bullseye runit. Then live boot is about as fast as from internal drive.

A swap partition on HDD is really only neccesary if you have heavy applications or a low ram system. My 2GB Ram netbook only rarely goes in to swapping, same goes for
              desktop box.

Hi Dave I took down/deleted the misleading crap with interspersed half truths and insults on swap and the associated challenge
to find the faults in that and write a correct howto.

Please stop discussing with a psycho, creatures like this one will play with you until you and all or others ignore them totaly.

And please stop giving tips which may help in improving the fabric of amazing anonymity coupled with manipulative hogwash and lies.

There are no hidden posts and no posts recently trashed/removed containing the word swap.
I have not followed any of you prior posts and hold nothing against you.
I do not know what post you are not seeing, but searching swap on the site shows alot of results and a fair few from you. If there is trouble with the forum search maybe using a search engine would yield better results?

Indeed the covid situations are crazy. We have been in lockdown for 4 months so far this year.

If the JSM account is used in another part of town from you, they must have excellent wifi there as you use the same computer/browser attributes as used with the JSM account. Although this is possible to be forged or changed, why would you want to copy these attributes from a banned account. Especially when you are using a proxy service on an account created a few minutes after the JSM account tried logging in and received a banned notification. This is the information I see to determine the block so the topic does not become as heated as the topic anti blocked. I will unblock based on your word; However it will be blocked again if the contents of this topic become too excitable.

As previously pointed out your posts were not deleted. Those posted replies are under the banned user name now due to the banning of your JSM account. So search for posts by banned and they should display.

Thank you for voicing your life achievements to give credit to your prior posts.
However I must close this thread as well to avoid others heatedly chiming in. If anti would like to reply he is still able to do so.
I am not going to ban your current user account however suspicious the account is…
By the way, if you are looking for anonymity you may desire a better vpn / proxy service than what opera has presented as default. Or at least change how the browser identifies itself.

Well, as you could post the correct link to the post, maybe you can also post the link to “how to swap correct”? Or did you delete the post?

It looks as you are very frustrated. Or how it comes to your name? Sad, as your product would be very interesting, specialy for people like me, that have not a lot of money. But maybe your name is just a fake name?

Here in Argentina, where I am, we have a lot of people, that are telling us, that they like to take care of the poor people and help them, but they are just corrupt and then taking all the money out of the state, that we have payed with our tax. I call them psychopaths! And I can see, that you have now the same problem in the USA. Well, I just think, that you are in the USA.

Your work is good, but there is a stone in your way…the ideologia! Try to get free of it and you will be happyer and doing even a better job for the poor people.

And just a question: what is BTW ?

                        see you, anticapitalista

No, sorry ma’am. I can not find the post again. It was in Tips and Tricks for shure and it was something with how to swap correct. And I also searched with autor for JSM. No results!

But I found this post from him:

                          https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/zram-defaults-not-found/

Sorry, but this forum is not working well. It is posting another link. Should be this link:

And I can see know, what was going on! Some users here seems to have a problem with people that know a bit more and don’t belive every nonsens. Maybe I will find JSM in the Devuan forum. And maybe I will find there a better solution.

But I can not more finde the post and JSM seems to be banned. I found the post about how to swap correctly very helpfull an have already done the first step of his advises. It is sad that heplpfull posts and users are not more here! In the forum I couldn’t find any good information about choosing the right way for swap and swapiness.

                              My dear JSM,
there are some things you should bear in mind when testing and discussing antiX.

1.) This project is not backed up by unlimited manpower like an organisation of the size of e.g. microsoft or canonical. But you will find here a team of highly engaged people doing their very best to help other people out volunteerly in their spare time. Moreover you will find behind scenes a team of highly skilled people creating and maintaining functionality like all the live persistent etc. stuff, which I did never happen to see in such a foxy, sophisticated way. Moreover they care for support of machines other distros won’t even consider to be worth their while to let them even live in their code.
Comparing all this to the manpower and means the result is simply great.

2.) Many parts of what antiX is constructed of are adopted from other projects (a very common process in linux world, as you probably know). So developers here don’t have influence on some decisions these ancestors make. Without manpower to re-code it in a special version for antiX it’ll simply stay as it is. Due to some design decisions of the “ancestors” in newer versions of their code antiX needs to stick to older versions of some programs, allowing to get executed on older hardware still. So you might miss some functionality you find in other distros. But this is the price of keeping usage of ressources at a low level. If you can’t live with it, this is probably not the right distro for your needs. But you should know: many of the heavyly ressource-wasting functionality can be invisibly replaced by more efficiently working engines at backend, so user won’t notice much difference on screen. This is what describes “lean and mean”. Sometimes a simple script is enough to replace main functionality of a heavy weighted software bundle only executable on brand new fast multicore systems.

3.) The bord is — as PPC has described impressively in his opening posting — a place to come together and learn from each other freely. And I sign his words about the borders of personal freedom. Here in this place people differently skilled share their time and knowledge to help other users out. Again, all of us do this volunteerly, and quite regularily it happens the person answering had to investigate the stuff before being able to give some hints in prospect to resolve the problem a user has. This is not a professional service hotline who owes you customer support. Even if we do make mistakes and are far off from providing perfect (or in some cases even functioning) solutions, you should compare the results to what professional driven hotlines nowadays provide. In this place you will not get a soft voice reading you out some readymade set pieces from a database. All this is handmade. And you will see: People won’t stop until your problem gets solved if you ask kindly and in an non insulting way even once having received a not useful (or even wrong) answer. As said before: we are all learning from each other here, this is the spirit of a community. And Linux _IS_ community. In case an interrogator realises an proposed solution to be wrong or has more knowledge about it already, he should freely express this by describing what he feels of being needed to correct, and why, explaining what leads him to the contrary opinion. This gives a base to discuss the problem target oriented to finally solve it. This is more as what you can expect from most existing professional help desks.

And now look at the way you’ve reacted yourself:

Well, as all of you can see, the answeres from the 2 people where just not helpfull.

So what? As you might have got from my scraggy attempts of explanation you will have to live with it. WE ARE NOT PERFECT.

And this is not the frist time! I am very good in testing…linux, browsers, swap methods…and also people.

Again, accept it or leave it. And being that skilled you should rather consider to back up our manpower than wasting time with meaningless chiack. Remember the spirit of community. Moreover, you might even simply file a bug, when finding it while testing. And you could — as I did myself — go on, taking the bull by the horns and starting to mend out critical errors found in some existing scripts.

It is very strange, that 2 people are not even able to give answers to a simple zram script, that everyone can understand, that has just basic skills. But as I told you, I am very good in testing, also people.

This is fine. If you consider the script in question as understandable to everyone, this means, you do understand it already. How come than you had to ask how to deal with some problems of using it? I presume, you did already know the solution, at least how to find it.

And please stop giving users missleading answers! With this you are waisting the time of the useres and also harm the antiX project!

As outlined above: even misleading answers are part of the process of finding a solution. Again: WE ARE NOT PERFECT. And even within a circle of highly skilled engineers you will see erroneous and misleading opinions, this is simply human. What makes all the difference: The way you react to this fact. They are trained to discuss all this in a professional way and this way sort out any kind of errors in the end.

And yes, I am a ingeneer for informatic (not computer since)

Fine again. This is best basis to step in and help other people out. Think of the spirit of Community. Again and again: Using Linux _IS_ community.

I am near 53 years old and I am not a stupid

Nobody said so (I do hope at least…)

anyway I can ask like a stupid in order to show up the people, that like to play around with stupid. Do you got the point? I hope so.

Well, here we have the very „true core of this poodle” (freely translated from J.W.v Goethe, just remember what this expression commonly stands for in German language, I’m sure you’ll understand. For all non German reading people: it translates correctly to „the gist of the matter“)

Please, DON’T WASTE OUR TIME BY SIMULATING YOU’D BE IN NEED OF HELP if this is not true. Nobody here is “playing around with stupid“. Don’t mix this up with some attempts to brighten up boring technical conversation by interspersing some jokes, or people playing on words. Take always into account these might not get understood in other languages, and thus be aware also you yourself might not have got the true intention of an seemingly insulting response from somebody trying to help you out. We have often seen the meaning get lost in translation. Understanding fun and humor in a foreign language is something you need to be skilled to an utmost high level in reading this language and knowing its culture to get its sense right. This is one of the most difficult tasks you can manage in a foreign language. Online translated texts commonly fail to transport the true sense, just like people not _very_ familiar with the foreign language in question.

Now, you may decide: Would you like to join and help other people out, best you can? Or would you rather stay where you are, trying to provoke volunteerly helping people? In the latter case, simply leave us. But in the first case you are welcome, even after all. Everybody should get entitled of a second chance, if he has understood finally how things are run…
