Yeah, it’s old hardware. Maybe you have a bad chip or the drive is going bad.
Maybe you can identify which chip is bad by swapping them out if that’s the problem. . Another possibility is that a chip isn’t mounted well and isn’t making a good connection.

in forum New Users and General QuestionsMemberMCreaves
So, I just installed AntiX yesterday, boy was wifi a pain in the backside to get going compared to MX, but I got it going. Also a side note, the Control Centre GUI ceni and connman buttons do absolutely nothing when clicked for some reason. It is also a real pita to install newer kernels without internet so your wifi dongles will work lol.
The issue now is when I go to logout > suspend, it doesn’t suspend but instead shuts the computer down apparently. When I come back later, it’s totally off. I don’t really know much about suspend on Linux since it has pretty much always just worked.
Info about the hardware (yeah, RAM modules mismatched, it came that way, more matched RAM on the way):

Many thanks, @ModdIt, what they describe there is exactly what I had experienced with some other 64GB SD cards myself.
I am on the most recent antiX kernel
4.19.180-antix.1-686-smp-pae
so the described patch is probably not present in antiX kernels still.
Here is what lsblk and mount command shows with a 64GB SD card:$ lsblk NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT loop0 7:0 0 2,6G 1 loop /live/linux loop1 7:1 0 1,5G 0 loop /home sda 8:0 0 93,2G 0 disk ├─sda1 8:1 0 8G 0 part /media/_daten1 ├─sda5 8:5 0 20G 0 part /media/_home ├─sda6 8:6 0 10G 0 part /media/antiX ├─sda7 8:7 0 42,5G 0 part /media/_daten3 ├─sda8 8:8 0 3G 0 part /media/_daten4 ├─sda9 8:9 0 2,2G 0 part [SWAP] └─sda10 8:10 0 7,5G 0 part /media/sda10 sdb 8:16 1 29,5G 0 disk ├─sdb1 8:17 1 29,5G 0 part /live/boot-dev └─sdb2 8:18 1 50M 0 part /media/antiX-uefi sr0 11:0 1 1024M 0 rom mmcblk3 179:0 0 59,7G 0 disk <----- this is the drivename └─mmcblk3p1 179:1 0 59,7G 0 part <----- this is the partitionname, it is not mounted.and mount command fails

But there is a good chance now this problem will be fixed for him over time, if it is _not_ an incompatibility. So, @JohanS, you might try different kernels. I’m quite sure antiX was able some time ago to read these 64GB cards flawlessly, I have one of them here, and it produces the same error, and yes @ModdIt, it is a Sandisk type 3.

Well, burrezo, I greet you.
I’m gobsmacked. Really. Hats off to you and Jorge Maidana!
Thank you very much for posting this solution for a problem I was working on for a long time now. This nvidia driver kept me from upgrading to antiX 19 up to now, and I was in doubt whether my notebook would be bricked on purpose by Nvidia finally, which would have happened if no solution for this problem would have been found before next year. Nouveau driver doesn’t work at all on this Notebook, resulting in blurry text and milky fog on the screen in X, which makes it hard to see what you are doing, and a blank black console, not allowing to enter anything.I followed your guidance and the 304.137 driver installed flawlessly on a fresh antiX 19.3 install (all recent upgrades applied)
Only the command “sudo update-grub” in step [3] didn’t work for me. It responded with an error (“grub: failed to get canonical path”). I tried to chroot to make it work but didn’t figure out which folder on the bootdevice would be the correct place to chroot to, and since the live USB stick (persistent) does engage Isolinux instead anyway, I decided to execute the steps in a different succession instead: First I prepared and executed everything (including the deinstallation of xserver-xorg-core and reinstalling the stretch version after switching the repositories), except for the installation of the already patched nvidia driver itself. Strange enough, the system booted to textmode in runlevel 5 on next boot (without updating grub before). Since X was not running, the patched nvidia driver installed perfectly. So I executed the final steps of your guide before rebooting. You’ll need to enter the command “sudo reboot” on commandline, in order make sure save-persistence for the root file system will be properly completed, so the new nvidia driver is stored. After reboot antiX 19.3 came up with clear, strong colours on screen and pin sharp letters. Everything seems to work as expected at the first glance, but I’ll report here about stability and whether I come across any side effects over time. I’m a bit in doubt about security, having to set xserver on hold. How do I get security updates for this in future?

OK, my previous statement was outdated, since I had installed on the other antiX 17.4.1 system running on athlon XP hardware a more recent version meanwhile. (I was sure I had, but had to recollect the details, searching for the notes I took about the installation.)
So here you are another one, functioning, proven to work rock stable and with long uptime, and maybe someone can profit from the data.sudo apt-get install virtualbox
The most recent version present on antiX installs,
but in the end of installation it fails to modprobe vboxdrv:
dmesg |tailshows:[3457526.728164] vboxdrv: loading out-of-tree module taints kernel. [3457526.740810] vboxdrv: Found 1 processor cores [3457526.741396] vboxdrv: Requires SSE2 (cpuid(0).EDX=0x383f9ff)Specific to athlon thunderbird and XP is that it does support SSE1 only.
According to Oracle database
SSE2 is required starting with VirtualBox version 5.2.10 and version 5.1.24.The latest Version NOT requiring SSE2 (and running with SSE1 only) is 5.2.8, which can be found at
https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Download_Old_Builds_5_2
Following files are required:
https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/5.2.8/virtualbox-5.2_5.2.8-121009~Debian~stretch_i386.deb
https://www.virtualbox.org/download/hashes/5.2.8/SHA256SUMS
https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/5.2.8/Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-5.2.8.vbox-extpack
First check whether the files were downloaded without errors:
shasum -a 256 -c SHA256SUMSapt-get --purge autoremove virtualbox
to remove the nonfunctional virtualbox version from the systemapt-get install /<path>/virtualbox-5.2_5.2.8-121009~Debian~stretch_i386.deb apt-get install libsdl-ttf2.0-0 modprobe vboxdrvAdd yourself (any user) to group “vboxuser”.
In case you have existing virtual machines you need to register them, e.G. your existing XP box:
registervm '/<path>/WinXP.vbox'Before the guest will be able to start you may need to add privileges for the folders containing .vbox and .vdi files as well as for the files itself. (I belive it was necessary to alow “read”, “write” and “execution” for “user” and “root” at least, but maybe “other” had to get the privileges also to make it work.)
And you’ll need to add the extension-pack from above from within virtualbox (entry is to be found in virtualbox menu “settings”)
Since I needed an LPT from within Guest system port I had to follow the steps described in this guidance in Virtualbox-Forums
In short:
To activate Virtualbox LPT port support for a virtual machine useVBoxManage modifyvm "Name_of_VM" --lptmode1 "/dev/parport2" VBoxManage modifyvm "Name_of_VM" --lpt1 0x378 7once. Adjust the settings according to your needs. And before each start of virtualbox make sure lp module is unloaded:
sudo rmmod lp
Otherwise no Virtual machine configured as described above will be able to fire up at all.
After this the Parallelport is present and usable in the virtual machine, but it might be necessary to configure it manually inside the guest (only in case it is not autodetected).
After virtualbox is powered down you might want to
‘modprobe lp’
again in order to make the port available to antiX again.Info from VirtualBox graphical User Interface:

Well if Alien works, I assume it’s just doing some path swapping and parsing. If that is the case then maybe I can just fork swupd and alter the paths like in Alien or even call Alien to patch paths for it from a temp directory.
An alternative is to make it easier to install Debian packages onto Clear Linux, which again, sounds mostly like path parsing/swapping issues.Personally I think this is an interesting project…
I had been using Intel’s Clear Linux for a year and aside from performance gains mentioned earlier I do like the radical change in architecture of CL, designed to ensure integrity and reliability. In this architecture they attempt to resolve the mess growing in Linux over time, where system files are all over the place. As one of such they discard the use of /etc and implement strict rules where system files are separated from user files. So if your Clear Linux goes south, just delete /etc and some other user added directories and you are back in business with pristine system…
This Clear architecture seems difficult to reconcile with typical Debian system but I think this project would be of great value if can be accomplished.

Hi, dear Sondro. You should investigate (the ClearLinux docs) to learn what a bundle comprises and how the mixer bundling mechanism operates. Then, read further, and understand that when a bundle is deployed (installed) via swupd it expects to find an OSTree-like operationg system environment. That paradigm is antithetical to apt//dpkg -based package management.

Hi ddc11, welcome to antiX.
I have setup antiX as a dual boot with XP many times in the past. But I have also had trouble once in awhile. Please make sure you make a complete backup of your XP system. It could accidentally get damaged if something goes wrong. It won’t be linux/antiX fault if something does go wrong. Some manufacturer’s just do weird things and hard disks get old, etc. Be prepared.
After your backup you will want to use a partition utility from WINDOWS to resize your partitions. You could also boot directly to the partition utility. The important thing is that it should be a program that is compatible with Windows XP. I have used Partition Magic and Aeomi successfully – there are others. (Another option is to add a second hard drive and do not attempt to repartition XP at all. That may be safer if the XP installation is important. If you can risk the XP system then don’t worry about it).
You will want at least 6GB of space available for antiX. More is better. 20GB or more if you have the space. AFTER freeing up the space and rebooting into XP, shut down XP and boot into antiX (using some of the techniques already mentioned by others – I favor Plop). In the antiX Live session you will use Gparted to add the linux partitions to the drive. You will not touch XP at all (except to change the boot loader in the MBR to Grub, which will support booting to XP). Use Gparted to add an Extended Partition and then inside that Extended Partition create two Logical Partitions. One will be small, for the Swap partition, and the other will be larger, between 5GB and 20GB depending on what is left after creating the Swap.
Something like this if you have 10GB of space:
antiX, EXT4, 9GB
linux swap, 1GBAfter using Gparted to create these two partitions you need to reboot and come back into the antiX Live session. Now you can go ahead and “install” antiX to the hard drive as a dual boot with XP. DO NOT choose to automatically install antiX. Select to add antiX using existing partitions. Select the new partition you made for antix (9GB in my example above) for the / partition. Then choose the smaller linuxswap partition for the Swap space. Leave the /home and /boot set to the / (root) partition.
When asked to install Grub select MBR to have antiX create the boot loader files for both XP and antiX. After installation is done you should reboot. If all went well you will see a Grub menu with antiX and XP as choices for booting. I would choose XP first and make sure it loads up and runs any disk scans it needs to finish. Then shutdown XP and reboot and then choose to boot antiX. (Remember to take out your CD/DVD/USB for the Live antiX. If the menu for the Live antiX comes back because you forgot to remove the disk you can use the down arrow key to select Boot From Hard Drive).
You should read up on this type of install before attempting it. It should work fine and I have done it successfully many times. But if the XP system is important you should take the XP drive out and use another drive to install antiX first. You should practice and read before you risk your XP drive. Once you have it all practiced you can do the dual boot setup as outlined above.
Have fun with antiX,

Yes, it sounds like you need to boot from a DVD. Maybe make the DVD, and boot the machine from it to see if everything is good. If problems, run inxi -Fxz and post the listing here along with the machine brand and model and an explanation of what problems you had.
You probably will need to free up space on the drive. Its wise to make a backup before messing with it, if possible, and if worth backing up. Once you have enough space (I would want at least 10 gb but you might get by with less), you downsize the XP partition, leaving the space for an antiX partition, then shutdown XP and boot from the antiX DVD. I would run gparted (Control Centre, Disks, Partition a drive) to create the antiX Ext4 partition. If you don’t have much memory, create a Linux-swap partition if possible. Next install antiX. Make sure it uses your new partition and swap if you created that. Hopefully it will be a default install, and antiX will automatically setup your dual boot from the hard drive.

execpi is very efficient
each call into vfs to check stats is an unremarkable, unnoticeable, millisecond blipThat pasted snippet from wynneth.wordpress is wonky. It is full of dirpathname patterns?
Regardless whether “df- h” or “fs_free”, is the mechanism peeking actual filesystems, or overlaid mountpoints? (If the latter, what items to filter? During a liveboot session, several are tmpfs and are either uninteresting or, again, “misleading”)
When spilling over into swap as seen in the screenshot of post #1, can the monitor ever be relied on to be “correct”? Cannot guess whether or how much content residing in the swap is there awaiting the next (lazy) sync call or is bottlenecked waiting to be written to disk.
My 1 GB difference on a 20 GB filesystem is 5% which matches the description
Yes, and matches a comments in this conky issue ticket discussion:
https://github.com/brndnmtthws/conky/issues/296
[..]
the used size is calculated as fs->size – fs->free, while the free size is directly from fs->avail.In the case of my ntfs filesystems, avail and free are identical. For my btfrs one, they are nearly the same. For my ext4 ones, they are quite different, the difference is 5% of the total size.
I think this isn’t a bug. From what I’ve read there https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2180267, in ext4 filesystems, 5% are reserved for the superuser. So if you have 90% used, it’s actually as if you had 95% used (I think nautilus and df report 95%, while conky reports 90%).
If you want to change the behavior, replace fs->size – fs->free by fs->size – fs->avail in those two blocks of code above and rebuild conky. That’s what I did.
[..]
this is due to the space reserved to root (~10%)
if you use df, it shows the free space without the root space (free space minus root space)
if you use discus for instance, you’ll get the exact free space
if you use discus -r, the result shall be the same of df, because the -r argument of discus means taking into account the root spacerelated: https://askubuntu.com/questions/960184/wrong-file-system-size-in-conky

Hello,
Thank you for the reply. Regarding your tips:1) I have checked both, sha256sum and md5sum, and they are correct.
2) I have read that post and others from MX forum. The solution that I tried was: without closing the installer and after a “sudo su”, I used the command “chroot /mnt/antiX passwd myusername”. The terminal gave me a “bad message” or a “segmentation fault”. I made a 20GiB partition for the /, so I think that the problem is not related to a lack of space.

dukesterTopic: Suspend shuts down computer?
