      Hello,

I have more and more often the problem when I want to start Antix 19.3 Full installed on a USB stick. I have to shut down the computer. I took 2 pictures because I can’t get into Antix to give a copy of the dmesg file.
What can I do to avoid this problem at startup?

          Hello,

I can’t install an NVIDIA driver for the 900 series (the exact reference is GTX960 launched in 2015)
I go through the Nvidia Driver Installer in the Control Center.
Here is what it has been offering me for several weeks.

          Installed is: (none)

Which driver do you wish to install

          Main repos or debian-backports?

          1: Main 418.181.07-1

          2: MX Test 460.39-1~bpo10+1

          3: Exit

          Enter Number of selection

The 418 driver does not install. This driver is quite old.
I tried to install driver 460 (test) but it gives me a black screen.
I tried several kernels but it doesn’t change anything, I still get the 2 drivers 418 and 460 test.
With MX Linux, I use the 450 driver which works really well because I use for example the Webrender for hardware acceleration in Firefox.

You can guess that I would like to install driver 450 to remove the screen tearing that annoys me on my screen.

          Best regards,
          Wallon

            Hello,

I can’t install an NVIDIA driver for the 900 series (the exact reference is GTX960 launched in 2015)
I go through the Nvidia Driver Installer in the Control Center.
Here is what it has been offering me for several weeks.

            Main repo candidate is: 418.181.07-1
            Debian backports candidate is: 460.39-1~bpo10+1
            Installed is: (none)

Which driver do you wish to install

            Main repos or debian-backports?

            1: Main 418.181.07-1

            2: MX Test 460.39-1~bpo10+1

            3: Exit

            Enter Number of selection

The 418 driver does not install. This driver is quite old.
I tried to install driver 460 (test) but it gives me a black screen.
I tried several kernels but it doesn’t change anything, I still get the 2 drivers 418 and 460 test.
With MX Linux, I use the 450 driver which works really well because I use for example the Webrender for hardware acceleration in Firefox.

You can guess that I would like to install driver 450 to remove the screen tearing that annoys me on my screen.

            Best regards,

Google search: Linux disk partitioning tools

How to partition a disk in Linux?

1 List the partitions: Use parted -l to identify the storage device you want to partition.
2 Open the storage device: Use parted to begin working with the selected storage device.
3 then type “Yes” to accept it.
4 Review the partition table: Show information about the storage device.

                Also, read https://opensource.com/article/18/6/how-partition-disk-linux

This should help you to set up the disk partitions as suggested.
Any of these tools can be used to modify disk partition from a Linux system: fdisk, cfdisk, parted, gparted, and there are others.

If you create a swap partition that has at least as much space as the amount of computer memory, and preferably twice that, you will always be able to swap processes. The best way to improve performance is to:

1 Obtain and use as much physical memory as your hardware supports.
                2. If you already have the maximum available memory installed, make sure that your swap partition is larger in size than available memory.

These two things will allow your system to perform as well as it can for the available features.

If your system is so old that the hardware is not supported by the current system kernels and utilities, a few people have found it necessary to use older kernels and they’ve found old antiX images in order to accomplish this.

If these and the other things spoken of in the multiple pages of this thread still do not help, the only other resources are:

                1. Join a Linux users group and ask for help or find someone to personally help and teach you.
                2. Read books on beginning Linux.
                3. Search online for information, especially to learn and understand the terms you do not understand.

It is not necessary to understand everything all at once, but it is crucial that you learn how to partition your disk using parted or one of the other disk partitioning tools. Without this, you cannot even get started. So all that remains is to learn and use Linux. Every person here started at some point; they tried things, it failed, they tried again and again until they learned. They read, studied, tried again and found something that works. Please put in some effort; it is the only way to ever understand any of this; otherwise it is worthless.

                Best wishes.

Use the live antiX image to select one of these tools and repartition your disk as recommended.

Depending on your computer hardware, we may be able to identify the problem. Please give us the output of
                      inxi -Fxz
that you see on the terminal. We need:
CPU model, GPU model, aprox. age of the computer, drivers that loaded for each of the CPU, Audio, Video, etc.

Approximate age is Windows Vista era I think. The manual I found online for this model mentions Vista. (It was donated to me so I don’t know much of it’s history – it had Windows 7 on it when I got it, so it’s been through some changes I’d say).
                      I booted off a manjaro live boot USB I had laying around;

Also, we need to understand what this means:

It booted fine, I chose the default option, then chose the first option for video device. Pressed Enter to continue.

Does your boot screen look like this the first screen or the second screen?
                      LEGACY_BIOS boot
                      UEFI Boot

It looks like the first screen.

                      What I see in detail:
The menu you get as soon as you boot off the USB image, I press enter. I assume this would be the one to boot into live mode or install it directly.
Then you get asked which video device (something I haven’t seen on other distros, so I thought it was worth mentioning). I chose the first of the 2 options, it seems fine because I still can see everything from that point on.
Then for some reason it wants you to press Enter to continue, so I do.

Actually here’s a series of photos of what I see, that should help. This is each step of the way. The last 2 show the screen I get stuck on, so I press F1 and get the login…

Thank you to all for your responses. I was able to successfully create the bootable ISO snapshot. The only issue was after creating it i decided to create or attempt to create a dual boot laptop with Windows 10 and antiX. I installed Windows 10 but made sure to leave some room for antiX. After wiping the hard drive and installing windows, I then booted the snapshot off my usb flash drive and using the cli-installer attempted to install the snapshot and also partition the space i left when i installed windows 10.

i have no experience doing a dual boot creation or even trying to restore the snapshot so it was a tremendous disaster, just as i expected it would. the laptop ended up just booting into windows not giving me a choice of operating systems. When i install antiX I let the auto installer create the necessary partitions because when i try to do it manually I create the primary and the swap but seem to forget to do something right. I do make the primary bootable. I also try to create a separate partition for home too.

I decided to forget the dual boot and just go with antiX but you never know when you need a windows pc or laptop so i kind of wish i knew what i was doing and that it had worked. I don’t even know what mistake i made so it wasn’t even a learning experience. I’m just going to steer clear of creating dual boots.

i reinstalled antiX alone and now i’m trying to figure out how to restore the snapshot which did save kodi. i didn’t open it yet to see if my settings are all saved but the program is there. if you happen to know how to restore a snapshot I’m all ears! thank you!

I’m trying to use a second monitor using disper (display switcher for attaching/detaching displays) on my antix 17 installation (hardware nvidia graphics card). disper recognizes the monitor but there is no image. I’ve tried to install a nvidia graphics driver using the system’s dedicated tool and got this reply:
“Uh oh. Your card is only supported by older legacy drivers which are not in any current Debian suite.”

Could anyone point me to a source from where I could get a legacy driver?
                          Thank you.

                            What does this do?
                            if [ "$( stat -c '%s' "$configfile_path" )" -ge 9 ] ; then

stat -c %s — report total size of a file, in bytes

Note that stat fed with path of a symbolic link, will output the size of the link, so path needs to be resolved via realpath or other means.

sometimes https://explainshell.com/ may be helpful (but way too often is not)

                            The snippet means:
if the file is 9 bytes or more in size, then do
if the file is 8 or less bytes in size, or if the file does not exist, then don’t do

It is because “at_once=” is the shortest among settings stored in stat-tested configfile and the string is 8 characters long, with a value it is at least 9 characters long, which with unicode is 9 bytes. No point of reading configfile less than 9 bytes in size.

Should there also be a check for the existence of certain files?

why this test is performed if there is no check for the existence of the file first

It depends on your stance: “explicit is better than implicit” vs hacking.
For the former, yes there should also be a check for the existence.
For the latter, it suffices. I think it is both logically and implementationally correct:
                            “stat” may not report a positive or zero integer if the file does not exist;
“[” may not report success with malformed expression — the expression fails → the “[” fails → the “0” exit code is not returned → the “then” block is not performed.
So why puff up the code (and waste your fingers’ movements) with dedicated existence check?
I am learning here either. It is of my own devising, I haven’t read this hack somewhere among best practices, like https://www.etalabs.net/sh_tricks.html . Please correct me if I mistake.

I also get this error when running the script:

stat: cannot stat '/home/pc/.config/icewm-menu-recentfiles-plus.rc.toml': No such file or directory
                            ./icewm-menu-recentfiles-plus.sh: 31: [: Illegal number:

Yes, I am aware of these 2 errors when the configfile does not exist. This local failure does not hurt the algorithm, at least that is what I can see. What can you say, did you remove icewm-menu-recentfiles-plus.rc.toml manually? Do these 2 errors break something?

Also, if the community here prefers having additional existence check, so be it. Please let me know explicitly.

I would be able to suggest a different aproach once I understood what the uxer was trying to do..

                            Brevity

Also, why not load all information into variables or into files in RAM temp to reduce the time of read/writes and improve performance?

Files are read once into variables, in order to reduce the time of read/writes and improve performance.if [ "$( stat -c '%s' "$configfile_path" )" -ge 9 ] ; then
is a check whether to read the file at all, in order to reduce the time of read/writes and improve performance. This my coding is exploratory. You may argue that calling a check itself causes load, and it may be speedier to just blindly load that configfile.

unreliable // inconsistent are the changes effected upon recently-used.xbel by various programs

The daemon would be left to stumble along as best it can.

                            inotifywait -m $HOME/.local/share/recently-used.xbel | \
                            while read file;do yad –text=”oOo” && sleep 10; done

The sleep was intended as a debounce, in case multiple, back-to-back events are emitted.
No joy ~~ swap mymenucontentgenerator.sh in place of yad and we would wind launching multiple racy instances of the generator script.

Please comment on this anti-race conceptual approach:

                            2 executables:

                            menu-generator-daemon.sh:

                            inotifywait -m "$XDG_DATA_HOME/recently-used.xbel" |

                            		fi
                            	done

                            menu-generator.sh — maximum one instance:

                            menu_generate
                            while [ -e /var/run/menu-generator-queued ]
                            	do
                            		rm /var/run/menu-generator-queued
                            		menu_generate
                            	done
                            rm /var/run/menu-generator-running
                            exit

IceWM and counterparts are rather bare-bones and “wooden” in terms of modern desktop usability. There is no remedy, except wait for (or make) some IceWM-ng (= next generation).

Additional options like “open with” could be added by means of IceWM menu’s items that are both clickable and submenu-containing as Logout and some Theme sub-items are (see screenshot below). Manpages are silent on it. Somebody, reveal the recipe!

quoting this “whole passage” but I’m focused on replying to the first sentence only. I reckon the remainder spans a separate topic (or 2).

I’m compelled to insist that there is no “remedy”, period.
iceWM and its kindred window managers cannot anticipate, and successfully cope with, the myriad quirks of NN disparate programs. The job of a window manager is simply to manage X window containers and to be blind to, and not interfere with, the operation(s) of (and IPC) performed by and between the windowed programs.

                            I was talking on:

a given user, during a given interaction, will wish to specify the opener (aka handler) for “this item, this time”. The menu-based solution probably cannot provide such flexibility (right-clicking an item would expose an action menu, offering an action labeled “Choose” or “OpenWith”). Possibly (I haven’t tested) in certain scenarios, the user could drag the {icewm} menu entry, dropping it on the desktop-resident icon for the desired handler/opener program…

I meant that it is 2021, and IceWM menu still has no: tooltips, right-mouse-button context menu, and other nifties.

I’d like to ask for the second time, if anybody knows, how to get that both-clickable-and-with-submenu entry.
“man 5 icewm-menu” describes prog and menu, but not how to combine them. The combination is part of IceWM menu — look at Logout. You can click on it or hover the cursor over the arrow and get Logout submenu. If anybody knows, tell me please how can such a combo be done for user-specified entries.

                                Hey Dawgs,

Looks like Brian solved the problem with his suggested hard drive re-configuration.

˝Try to allocate, if possible at least 100 MB just for / alone and ideally 5-10 GB for the overall disk.˝

                                So I:

                                1. Booted 19.2 from the CD
                                2. Opened the INSTALL icon
                                3. Opened the Partition SW
                                4. Reconfigured hardrive to:
                                WIN XP = 10 Gig
                                AntiX = 45 GiG
                                SWAP = 1 GiG

System boots fast and SW opens equally fast, but runs slower probably because the SWAP partition is not recognized now that I’ve moved it away from the WIN XP partition to follow the antiX partition and reduced it from 2.5 Gig to 1.0.

                                How do I:

                                a.) Allocate Meg to /
                                b.) Get SWAP running
c.) TUNE OS for maximum performance

YES, I realize that 512 Meg of RAM is limiting, but I may get another stick this week and have a whopping 1.0 Gig for better speed and performance.

THIS however is the reality in Central Europe – lots of old WIN XP boxes sitting in the closet collecting dust when they could be running fine with antiX

So, thanx again for helping me work-out the bugs, now I can start installing antix on a half dozen at a local charity that provides older computers to kids who have no idea there is a computing world off the crapple-gulag-macrosloth plantation. Once they discover antix look out!

                                Carry-on til you are carrion . . . .
