      Howdy and Welcome. I just realized your model number of laptop sounded a bit familiar.

        Exploring caprea’s link, you can find another article mentioning different keys (?). I don’t know which applies to your computer, but just in case I will also link it
        https://support.lenovo.com/uu/en/solutions/ht104668
        F2 is for the BIOS (or Fn+F2), and F12 for the boot menu (or Fn+F12), based on that article

        For partitioning, Reduce the Windows partition by 89GBs or more (it depends on what you are going to install on your linux system; I would recommend leaving 200 for Windows and the rest for any and all Linux experiments). For now I wouldn’t wipe out windows, and adjust the partition to something conservative for the future. Don create any other partition and leave the free un-allocated space as is.
        Don’t delete the recovery partition (the one at the end). When you get to boot to antiX, use Gparted (Control Centre > Disks > Partition a Drive).
        Use the Un-allocated space to create (minimum):
        1. (optional) A swap partition with the same amount of space as your total RAM.
        2. (required) A ext4 partition with the rest of the free space (or however big you want).
        I recently described the process, in case you have some doubts (just do the create new partitions, and not the new table thing).
        During installation you need to make sure you install grub to EFI, so that antiX can properly boot on your laptop.

        You will probably wont be able to boot to a graphical interface using any of the available official antiX 19.3 ISOs, as they use an older kernel version.
        If you don’t mind using an un-official ISO, I recently built one with 5.8.16 kernel version that was confirmed to boot on a computer with 10th gen intel CPU.

          Thank you christophe for the helpful info on creating a swap file. I have a rather exciting development to share! I was able to boot the installation drive into the GUI! A combination of using F4 to force the USB boot and using the AntiX19 Legacy Beta got me a GUI and installation has begun from the desktop! I’ll share some pictures below. Some thoughts, good god this old computer is slow. Now I expected it to be bad but wow, at least a full minute before mouse input is received. Currently installing and at “20% Copying New System”. I will definitely keep everyone posted and again thank you all for your patience and willingness to help with this unique project. On a side note, I’ll likely be installing AntiX on another older system in the future after this project to use as a media (photo) server. Although I don’t anticipate any issues there as I was running Win 7 on it up until about a week ago.

            For base or full versions, I’m thinking you need swap — if it will work at all. It’s below the minimum, according to the official requirements.

            antiX should run on most computers, ranging from 192MB old PII systems with pre-configured 128MB swap

            But it never hurts to try!

            If you do continue, I recommend creating a swap file.

            Check out this article, if you need help with that:

            https://www.howtogeek.com/455981/how-to-create-a-swap-file-on-linux/

            (I’ve rarely had to do that sort of thing, but the step-by-step at the end of the article looks right.)

            And keep us updated. Many of us here find it very enjoyable to read about this sort of thing. And we love to help, where we can.

              I think that’s too long.

              I saw what Xecure saw: 176 MB RAM on the computer. You said it had 512 MB. Maybe some parts are failing…

              I just copied this from antixlinux.com:

              antiX should run on most computers, ranging from 192MB old PII systems with pre-configured 128MB swap to the latest powerful boxes.

              antiX-core and antiX-net will run with 128MB RAM plus swap, but don’t expect miracles!

              192MB RAM is the recommended minimum for antiX. 256MB RAM and above is preferred especially for antiX-full.

              So if there is only 176 MB RAM & no swap, that may be why it’s hung…

                If you are entirely sure the SSD is new or OK, then maybe the connector is dirty, has some ware or not touching properly. It could also be a SATA mis-configuration in the BIOS (You may need to change it to AHCI mode).

                If you are sure all this is OK, then you can try to manually partition. Boot with the F4 option “noautomount”. Once you boot in, launch the Installer and select “Run partition tool”, which will load a program named Gparted.
                0. Make sure that you can see in the top-right corner the correct drive. It should say something similar to “/dev/sda (200.00 GiB)”. If that is not the one, click there and select it (If you cannot see it, inform us).
                1. In the top menu,. select Device > Create partition Table, and select the table type “msdos”. It will wipe out the disk.
                2. Now with Partition > New, add these partitions:
                2a – New size: 2048 MiB, File system: linux-swap, Label: swap
                2b – New size: (the rest of the disk), File system: ext4, Label: antiX

                The result should look like:
                simple-partition
                Hit the Apply button (tick icon) or Edit > Apply All operations and wait for the process to end. Close the window.

                Back to the installer, the “Custom install” option will be enabled (and should be selected). Proceed to the next step.
                Select root: your newly created ext4 – antiX partition
                home and boot should autoselect as root (that is good).
                Select swap: your newly created 2.0GB swap
                It should look like this:
                simple-custom-install

                Proceed with the installation and INSTALL Grub. If it fails again, you must start questioning your SSD.

                  The behavior of rox, vs spacefm, is confusingly different.

                  rox populates the desktop items by reading/writing the content of a “pinboard file”.
                  You can create, and swap between using, multiple rox pinboards.

                  in antiX, the default pinboard file loaded for icewm sessions is:
                  ~/.config/rox.sourceforge.net/ROX-Filer/ps_antiX-icewm
                  (you can use a text editor to examine its content)

                    Dear All,

                    I have installed Timeshift to do a backup but it doesn’t work.
                    Is it possible to use Timeshift ?
                    I don’t like to use an snapshot (iso) because the file fstab is modified and some times, I can’t reinstall the iso (Bios or Legacy or EFI not compatible)

                      Hello,

                      I’m new on this forum and sorry if I do some mistakes in English. French is my mother tong.
                      I’m a little bit trouble because I have noticed that “antiX 19 Full” has not the same options in English and in French in the window “add-desktop”.
                      I have tested my USB Live on my desktop (Intel i5-6400) and tested also my old laptop (Amd Athlon) with antiX installed. It’s not the same kernel for both and I have the same issue.
                      To be sure;
                      1) Icon “Favorite Application”
                      2) Applications
                      3) Preferences
                      4) Add Menu Item
                      5) In the window “add-desktop”, the line “Item Location”, we can choose;
                      -> 1) Application Menu
                      or
                      -> 2) Desktop Shortcut
                      or
                      -> 3) Personal.

                      But for antiX 19 in french, In the window “add-desktop”, the line “Item Location”, it’s impossible to choose something. All the options are on the same line and the narrow at the end of line is not activated. Please, find attached my 2 screenshots (English versus french)

                      Here it is my full info of my desktop (Intel) with the AntiX USB Live

                        What solution did you choose?

                        My approach (untested) probably would have been to edit /etc/slim.conf, appending -maxclients 2048 to the xserver_arguments line within the configuration file.

                        The issue you described and its solution would be a good addition to the tips-n-tricks subforum. I don’t know whether raising the limit would “fly” as a default configuration parameter. antiX caters to systems with older//lesser hardware, and provides xserver-xorg-legacy (packaged by debian?). If the antiX distro shipped a supplementary conf file, e.g. /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/99-maxclients.conf, would the “higher than 512” declared value be universally honored and if so, would its effect increase the likelihood of lesser systems encountering undesirable swap or OOM scenarios?

                            One thing about authentication I start (/usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1) at startup with i3wm and have aways done so never had problem with this ever. Is this starting to have a negative effect.? Is it needed ?

                                All hardware working. dist-upgrade done. Sure was a bunch. Just dialing things in till I locate a bluetooth dongle to test.

                                  and I was surprised when jammies popped in here, after a year incommunicado, only to stir the pot.

                                  Someone who belatedly found this topic sent me a PM yesterday, asking me to further explain my previous comment(s) in this topic. What??? No, I’d rather just change the subject…

                                  Political corruption in most countries is probably more common than anything else.

                                  Really? more common than cheese? more common than navel lint?

                                  Heh, reminds me of the topic I had intended to start a week ago, but forgot:

                                  So this (insert gender-neutral pronoun) drops into the forum and writes “I’m accidentally deleted my shoe and now my sock has a hole in it. How can I fix it?”
