I wasn’t aware of this until a little bit ago so, for anyone else that doesn’t know…

You can type chrome://gpu in a chrome based browser i reckon…. and learn what the GPU capabilities are of your current system.

      For example:

Hi, You are very low on memory and swapping to Harddisk is very slow.
Searching the Mother Board P4M800-8237 took me here. https://www.viatech.com/en/silicon/legacy/chipsets/p4m800/
Check on the board itself but the given board number indicates you can install up to 3GB DDR400/333/266 SDRAM.
If the information is correct slot in 2 GB and if possible an SSD to get it running and acceptable for general usage. You could keep the harddisk for storage but run from the faster device. Replace the BIOS Battery unless you have already done so, Likely a cr2032 which is cheap and easy to find.
Memory and SSD can be pretty cheap. I use Patriot burst ssd which is cheap and fast.

Pale Moon and claws Mail are my choices on older Hardware. Claws is a fantastic mail client.

            Hello.
            My first question ever.
In this time of Corona I need a lot of PC for my family (school, work, play, etc).
I find an old PC for me an HP VECTRAVL420 with 1,54 GB RAM, 2 HD and Windows XP (sda)
I installed Debian 9 (sdb) but Debian was too slow for that PC.
So I installed Antix 19 in a new partition of sdb (sdb3). Common swap partition for Debian and Antix.
I told to Antix installer “DON’T INSTALL GRUB”.
After installation (no errors) I tried to update GRUB. In a Debian Terminal I wrote: “update-grub2”.
In GRUB MENU now there’s an entry with Antix but when I choose it I receive this message:
            “NO SUCH DEVICE cbc1ac80-79b8-4d32-823d-c342e7d51182”
            “FILE SYSTEM UNKNOWN”
            “FIND KERNEL BEFORE”
Can you help me please? I would like to maintain all the OS (XP, DEBIAN and Antix).
I think my grub.cfg is usefull for you.
            Thank you very much.

Interesting, what’s too big and slow really did matter more 20-25 years ago.

I had a Micron 100 Mhz system as my first computer at home in 1995. It ran Slackware and Windows 95. That computer was definitely affected by large workloads and I only kept it for a couple of years.

I had a couple of laptops after that. One of them benefitted from the first broadband home network, so using Web browsing with a really brought up the limits.

I got a Dell Dimension 4100 desktop in 2001 that I kept for 9-10 years and by the time I got rid of it I can remember that the system would swap out processes and that’s the only system I would frequently notice that behavior.

Performance is an issue compared to the latest technology on my current system but no resource is completely consumed at any time, so it’s still useful with efficient software like ours.

Hi. The clock on the tray shows the wrong time (5 hours earlier). I correct it via Control Centre -> System -> Set Date and Time -> “Use Internet Time Server to set automatically date/time”, but, after (min-) Icewm restarts, the clock shows again the wrong time. How can I correct it permanently?

Hi. I use XMMS to play mp3 music files but, since yesterday, there’s no sound. No such a problem if I use MPV to play the same files. I suppose I’ve done sth wrong, but I’ve no idea what. Reinstalling XMMS didn’t help. Any idea?

The 22 yr old P-III teaches lessons on software efficiency, and what is way too slow vs what is reasonable. Firefox is hopelessly slow. Palemoon will be the browser. LxTask is too slow, so HTop will be the system monitor. Other than being slow to install due to the speed of the DVD, it wasn’t too bad. I did end up on a treasure hunt for a PS2 keyboard with a Windows key, though, when I realized that I couldn’t press it because it didn’t exist. I added a Win+C key to toggle the Conky Off/On, but couldn’t try it. Back then the keyboards didn’t have windows keys. Luckily I had one on an old XP machine in the basement, and swapped it in to test with.

I will revise my 32 bit spin this weekend to make it perform better. I think I will leave Firefox and LxTask loaded, but not set as the defaults, so that if someone is running memory strapped machine with 32 bit software they can still use Firefox or LxTask if they want to.

Maybe there should be a slot for a “default system monitor program”, just like there is one for Terminal, Browser or File Manager. That way IceWM setups wouldn’t need to be changed to switch.

Oh well, at least everything worked on the old beast….

hey & thanks for providing these isos.

got some time today to try this sid+runit iso..
unfortunately i couldn’t get to login screen *unless* i used option f7 -> ask -> 303 on boot screen (800*600*8 vesa). default option (1024*768) and other options during
boot would show “waiting for dev to be fully populated”, and then nothing, just a black screen, without responding, till a hard poweroff.

it’s an older thinkpad from 2011, but was booting fine every other antix version. also booted and installed antix 19.2 stable without issues.

wanted to try 1600*900 since this is laptop resolution, but then i get “undefined video mode number : 3d4”..

another thing, when choosing “toram”, it would start copying-progress, then throw this: “bash: write error: Invalid argument”. then report copying to ram finished succesfully..

something minor i’ve seen in other antix versions also, is “nofail” option for encrypted swap partition. i think it’s deprecated even for stable version, maybe it should just go away in the future.. (?)

                        thanks,

I came up with another colour scheme for ROXTerm that I called ROXBlue. I then created a wrapper script for ne called ne-roxblue, and changed the .selected-editor for normal users to it as well as putting EDITOR and VIEWER variables in .bashrc and an external editor command to run it in mc’s ini file. The wrapper script also changes the window title to ne, which causes the Helpnotes to work right, bringing up ne helpnotes on Alt+F1 while in the program when called from Midnight Commander, which is where I need it on the F4 key, replacing MCEdit.

I thought more about the hibernate. Obviously it won’t work for everyone. Some systems just won’t hibernate and resume, and I guess if it works it works, and if not, one shouldn’t use it after seeing that it doesn’t work with that machine. It looks like there is a config file, and if I write it, and run the right stuff, and make a few other changes (no small task for me), it should be able to set it up. The difficulties are setting the size and location of the swapfile, and then adding the code to the files it need to be in. It wasn’t that hard for me to do, but to get it to do it automatically will or would not be easy, because it would need to respect things already there, remove previous resume info, and replace it with new. I’m just not sure all that is worthwhile, although it would be nice if it just set it up for me,, rather the me having to do it by hand on each machine, each time I install it to a partition. The cobblers children have no shoes. That’s just the way life is sometimes…

To replace MCEdit, I ended up going with ne, which is short for NiceEditor. It’s pretty nice, and works well with ROXTerm. My only gripe is that I didn’t like the colors, and didn’t like that my application specific helpnotes didn’t realize that it was an ne window, and therefore brought up the mc help because I was running it from mc from within ROXTerm session.

I got suspend and hibernate and resume working with a swapfile. Not a swap partition, a swapfile. Very cool. Not sure if I’m capable of making that happen generically for an installed system, but I’m thinking on it. It would be neat to have a script that sets it up without the user needing a rocket science degree…

I added PPC’s new Toolbar icon manager, as well as anti’s fixed IceWM, which worked great (thanks anti!!), and just need to do some testing to make sure everything is functional, and then I’ll upload a fresh copy.

I wonder if anyone tried it? I need to try it with VirtualBox, which BTW is included…

At this moment, I’m using the same wifi adapter on a different laptop (antiX-19_386-full) to connect with the same wifi network and send this post and, as you can see, there’s no problem.

Hi. I have seen at least one other discussion regarding some wifi problem in antiX-19.2.1, but I think it’s not the same case, so I open a new thread in order to avoid the confusion.
After a fresh installation of antiX-19.2.1 (base), I open ceni to enable wifi but, after clicking on “Scan”, the result is this message:

Scanning for wireless networks..Successfully initialized wpa_supplicant
                                rfkill: WLAN soft blocked
ctrl_iface exists and seems to be in use - cannot override it
Delete '/run/wpa_supplicant/wlan0' manually if it is not used anymore
Failed to initialize control interface '/run/wpa_supplicant'.
You may have another wpa_supplicant process already running or the file was
left by an unclean termination of wpa_supplicant in which case you will need
to manually remove this file before starting wpa_supplicant again.
