I use a Toshiba Satellite 2450 laptop. The installed system is antiX-19.b2_386-full, 32-bit (for the inxi output see below).

The Epson AL C1100 printer is identified (see attachment “a1”).

So, all printer properties are displayed properly (see attachment “a2”).

Then, I use the same printer with a HP Presario 2100 with antiX-19.b3_386-base, 32-bit, installed (for the inxi output see below).

The printer setup shows “Generic Printer” instead of “Epson-AL-C1100” (see attachment “b1”).

So, a lot of printer properties are missing (see attachment “b2”).

        * The default IceWM theme has very pixelated “antiX” label on the main menu button.
        * I still cannot mount a btrfs partition as reported before (https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/antix-19-b2-full-64-and-32-bit-available/page/2/#post-24484)

I’m able to mount an XFS partititon.
I will try if another antiX kernel allows to mount a btrfs partition.

          Hope this isn’t a duplicate.

Installer failed with an 256gb Lenovo SSD pulled from a working FrankenPad and wiped. Partitioned with GParted on install, 8gb swap first, 40gb partition for antiX19 beta 2 for testing on external drive.

Installer – selected partitions, started to install and “Failed to format required partitions” – checked “OK” – Installer Box turned grey and no longer functioned.

“Want to quit” – “no” – cursor turns into a watch icon and stays that way. Can move through screens but gets stuck at 2% progress.

Tried several times with same result. Re-partitioned from MX that is on the internal drive, tried again on external SSD – same result.

Wiped, re-partitioned same way, installed MX 18 – no problem.

Created a partition to dual boot with beta 19 – installed antiX 19 – no problem.

Wiped drive, set same partitions in MX, tried antiX beta 19 again, same fail.

          Tried using a ThinkPad T60p and HP 470 G3 both x64 – same result.
          ————————
Update: Beta 3 – same drive – No problem!

Edit your .Xresources file with vim then write the file. To auto reload .Xresources add the below to your .vimrc.

            autocmd BufWritePost ~/.Xresources !xrdb %

Also if you are over using shift+: for the command line in vim. shift is no longer needed just : colon

Latest secure kernels available in the repos for 32 and 64 bit architecture (stretch, buster, testing and sid).

              5.2.8 (64bit and 32 bit pae and non-pae-486)
              4.19.66 (64bit and 32 bit pae and non-pae-486)
              4.9.189 (64 bit and 32 bit pae and non-pae-486)

Amount of swap space needed is dependent on your usage, & how much ram you have.

Because disk space is plentiful, I give it equal to ram on my 2GB & 4GB machines, but I could easily run my systems without any, as I mainly use the internet, or play music/watch videos, & small games like mahjongg/cards.

                Linux (& BSD) since 1999

I recommend at least the amount of ram you have, but at least 2 GB if you don’t plan to try making your machine hibernate. If you have low ram, you might consider bumping up that swap figure.

I like to know how to create a swap partition before installation of antiX, and the size it should have (2X RAM rule?).
Or should I create a swap file instead? If yes, how i do it?
Thank you in advance for the support to newcomers 🙂

This one failed many times. Single partition ext2 it installed , but no boot. It made me question had the correct target for MBR been selected. maybe my mistake.
Many more failures, same thing twice not working, then single partition ext4 it installs. No boot.
Many failed attempts using the fresh b2 live media described. fail. using the dd media described. failures. recreated live with rufus as iso [not dd] failures. recreated using live-usb-maker not setting persistence this time. failures.
Done. Failed. no success with usb third.

19.b2_64 install target number four usb2-8G.
                      using installer the dd one.
Format single partition ext2 used custom noswap (only 7G drive here) pointing to the one partition.
                      Installed. success. It boots.
                      The partition scheme is /sda1 6.24ext4 and /sda2 1.0fat32 and 31.72M unallocated.
The sda2 1.0fat32 information says Status: Mounted on /media/sdb2
                      There is no /sdb
                      Works, but flawed, then.

                        Thanks for the quick responses
I did try the base install today. I am able to install successfully.
I have a 6gb partition for the base and a 2gb linux swap partition
When I try and startup the os I am not successful
I did the autologin at setup and picked the default windows manager.
It wants to startup and I see the screen flash, which is a sign of it changing resolutions or not properly setup video card or monitor specs.
I do not think it sets up my 800×600 chips 65000 hardware.
I pick the 800×600 in setup but I think that only applies to the shell and not the windows manager. I have a few other linux, puppy installed so I can possibly edit a config file or something?

I try plug in external monitor and I can switch back and forth and see an unusable garbled screen on my tv

Is there something similar like xorgwizard that can be run from command line to probe and tweak the video settings?

                          Hello anticapitalista
You asked “tried to install (not frugal) beta2 to a usb device?”

Yes. got one. , but now I know why You asked. , because of many failures.
christophe had 32bit success with the cli installer, so I stuck with the antix-installer-gui for trials.
it was not a clean target; it had a mx install, not live, install on it. usb2 16G.
A antix-installer update was anticipated so started off with a fresh antix19.b2_x64-full live usb with persistence. No upgrade of the installer was necessary. it had 1.0.9 present. Noticed a cli upgrade that i did not put on. no upgrades done on the fresh live b2_x64 iso.
Began trials of installs each time selecting entire device option. failed. it would each time create partitions and stop at formatting them. 1%, 2%, 3%.
Tried a live installer that was created with dd. no different. installs to entire device failed. went back to the persistent live usb to continue trials.
At each failure I would open gparted and try to create a single partition formatted ext2 by erasing the ext4/12.1G and erasing swap/2G failed partitions. Then tried different varied formats of the single partition. ext4. no . then varied, different formats of the two partitions. fails. Selected custom partitions pointing at the partitions for root and swap failed.
I removed the package antix-goodies, uninstall. trial install not to entire, but selected the single 14.1 partition and “noswap.” IT Installed. it booted. the partition scheme was 12.1G ext4 plus 2.0Gext4; the 2.0G contained the lost+found and showed as /media/demo. That is not what is desired for the installation (and demo was not the home user name.) Tried again with custom using swap pointing at existing partitions failed. tried again with noswap two partitions failed. noswap to single partition failed.
back to trying entire some more. formatted it again and again. put a 1M btrfs at beginning and the rest ext2. selected entire device. it installed. that one would not boot. many trials with partitioning and formatting. about one hundred trys in all. all stop right away at beginning fail.
set a 1M ext2 at front and the rest ext4, hit the entire device button, suddenly it worked that time.
I switched the kernel to 4.9.186. installed all upgrades including putting back install antix-goodies.
It is the working proper install that is desired [desired on the first try though] with 12.88G ext4 partition and 2.0G linux-swap partition.

Machine was still running antix19.a2_64 installed to usb2-32G. and i fell out of the trials. I like the alpha a lot. Alpha has been on every day since release. Now the machine has also the antix19.b2_64 installed to usb2-16G to trial. a fresh install.
In the middle of the trials it seemed like having any swap partition present just killed it. The only success was without a swap partiton present. The trials got beyond notes; too numerous. Not sure why it worked when it did decide to succeed.

Thank you for the rox panel visibility fix.

edit: Ongoing. Yes. got another One. second one.
booted live fresh persistent b2_64 device.
Opened NEW fresh out of the package usb2-32G.
No prep. on new usb. installer gui. select install to entire device.
                          installed first time flawless.
That means only a third usb will establish result.
The first usb may be fault. will publish after a third usb trial.

I think it may be lack of ram, see this…

                            https://antixlinux.com/about/

I’m not sure if creating a swap partition before trying to install it will help, or not, but I’d give it a try.

                              Hi anticapitalista,

I tried the 19b2 on my old P-III/1Ghz/512MbRAM machine. I had a challenge getting it to boot since this machine doesn’t boot from USB. But I managed to figure it out using Plop. When I tried using the DVD to boot I kept getting a lot of I/O errors. Eventually it just hung up and I had to power down. When I used the USB it worked.

I don’t know if it is a bug, but when I first got the Live desktop up and running I looked at the menu (the default Rox-IceWM) and the Applications menu had only one entry for Synaptic. All the other entries for that menu were missing. I selected “Update Menu” and it fixed it. The CC worked fine and the terminal. Only had that one glitch.

I’ve used Package Manager to install SeaMonkey. It works fine. I tested SMTube, it works fine. All-in-all I think this version is better OOTB for this machine than was version 17. I’ll be testing some more but so far so good on this ancient kit!

                              Thank you,

I installed b2 on LiveUSB today. It is running just fine on my Core2Duo class laptop. I used the 32-bit version.

It seems to be the consensus that newbies are afraid of text and will only accept a distro that meets their idea of good looks. It’s a good thing I don’t subscribe to those ideas since my first impression of the wall paper was “yuck!” – I hated it. And I said to myself “what happened to that nice picture that was used in b1?” But I think it’s silly to make a decision about a distro based on the default wallpaper. I hated several of the past default wallpapers too, especially the shells in the sand. Fortunately I know it’s possible to change the wallpaper to whatever I like.

And I don’t see the difference to the seeing the text splash screens over the scrolling text. I guess I am just dense. But it doesn’t bother me whatever is on the boot screen. I’ll learn how to change it later. And won’t a newbie also find the boot menu confusing? “What is grub?” they’ll say. Makes no difference. I think it is an impossible task to formulate a screen for the whims of every possible user who has their own opinion of what is “best” or “better” than what you like.

Does it work? Does antiX help me get more life out of my no-longer-supported-because-it-won’t run-Windows-10 computer? Great! I’ll learn how to set it up and make it suit my tastes later. If I can’t make it work for me, no mater how many nice pictures and colors it presents to me, I will move on to something else.

Thank you for antiX. It’s a great distro. I’m so glad it is not trying to be something it is not (Ubuntu, Lubuntu, whatever).

I’m having the problem where slim takes 55 mb and xorg takes 82 mb of memory on my Dell xps-15 laptop with 4k optimus video built in.

I got it down to 34 mb by reducing the background.jpg and panel.png to very small files. I would be happy with just a console style login and some of my memory back 🙂

Luckily the machine has 16 gb.

                                  $ sudo mem
