@seaken64, we had too many complaints about irrecoverable data loss when people used fat32 for their live usbs. If you want to have the first partition be fat32 and the 2nd partition be ext4 with the live-usb stuff, there is a recipe for swapping them around in this thread; antiX live usb maker PARTITION TABLE issue?. This will change the partitioning to gpt and this will cause problems on some Dell models.

It breaks my heart when our users needlessly lose all their data. In addition, there have been a lot of bogus myths and suggestions saying fat32 and ext2 are better for usb sticks and there are a lot of people who fall for this nonsense and still believe it. Few people take the risk of data loss seriously until it happens to them. You can probably still make an antiX/MX fat32 live-usb with Rufus. You could also do it manually by saving everything on the ext4 partition, use mkfs.vfat to convert it to a fat32 partition and copy everything back. If you want to boot legacy then you will need to run syslinux to reinstall the bootloader. I’d call this Kovorian
mode and I think it is ill-advised unless you absolutely do not care about losing all of your data.

There is an old saying that there are two kinds of people in the world, those who have never lost any data and those who make backups. I think there may be something similar about losing data due to an unreliable file system.

It’s like asking someone to make cars without seatbelts or air bags. Sure, the chances of any one person dying or worse may be small but the manufacturer will still have a lot of blood on their hands.

You post mentions antiX Full on 2 kits…
yet the inxi output shows “antiX-17_386-base

The LiveUSB doesn’t work on the celeron kit, so I ran the “inxi” command from the installed (base) system. See below the output from LiveUSB on one of the kits that it works:

snipped from the top websearch result for “/etc/systemd/systemd directory”

          freedesktop.org/…/man/systemd.unit.html

A unit file is a plain text ini-style file that encodes information about a service, a socket, a device, a mount point, an automount point, a swap file or partition, a start-up target, a watched file system path, a timer controlled and supervised by systemd(1), a resource management slice or a group of externally created processes.

          . . .

Load path when running in system mode:

          /etc/systemd/system.control
          /run/systemd/system.control
          /run/systemd/transient
          /run/systemd/generator.early
          /etc/systemd/system {—- Local configuration
          /run/systemd/system {—— Runtime units
          /run/systemd/generator
/usr/local/lib/systemd/system {——- Units of installed packages
          /usr/lib/systemd/system
/run/systemd/generator.late Generated units with low priority (see late-dir in systemd.generator(7))

Various debian packages will install these in case systemd is used on a system, or with the expectation that systemd will be used. On an antiX system, the config and unit files residing in the /etc/systemd/system directory “do nothing, are not used” by the operating system. However, deleting them is inadvisable b/c some applications test the (expected) presence of their associated unit or config file at each launch & may chirp if those files (placed during installation of the application’s package) are absent.

AntiX 17.4 (full) LiveUSB worked on two kits, but it doesn’t work on this celeron one (see below). After loading, the cursor seems dead, and I only can use the combo <Alt + PrtSc + type “reisub”> to reboot. Adding the line “needs_root_rights=yes“ to /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config didn’t help.

On the other kit (see below), antiX forum opens right after having installed midori 8. Posting now from it, but it’s painfully slower than palemoon. If palemoon-non-sse2 hadn’t stopped being supported, I wouldn’t care.

Thanks for your help. Indeed, no mx testrepo in any of my lists. I placed it in the various list, too. I installed gdebi and used it to install the keyring_all.deb for the repo. I used Synaptic to install midori 8. After all, I unticked the check box for the mx testrepo and hit reload.

Unfortunately, midori doesn’t run fine on this antiX system. Pages seem to be loaded but, at the end, only a blank page is displayed.

A good suggestion Admin, WICD is looking on eth0 while wireless is on eth1, easily switched in the preferences. But this relates to a previous post – why is the boot trying to swap eth0 to eth1 and eth1 to eth0 ? I never discovered why, just put up with it when it took place. Maybe using WICD and CENI indescriminately is causing them to get confused? The many networks in this building seem to be an ever-changing proposition, I connect automatically 10 or 20 times without trouble, then can’t and need CENI to find what’s there and replace the interface.

                      tux@antix1:~

I did a test with the backport driver : the nvidia module not found
I did a test with the principal driver : no screen found
with the nvidia driver, it seems that I have a screen detection problem with EDID.
I re-installed new driver and created a xorg.conf with a modeline that works well with the new driver.
I reinstalled the nvidia driver and modified the xorg.conf by replacing the new driver in the device section with nvidia. But I still have a black screen when I reboot, I made several unsuccessful attempts…

I’m probably racking my brains for nothing with this old card, because there’s probably an insignificant difference between the performance of the nvidia driver and the new driver

                      Anonymous

But I’m a complete linux noob. So I’m not sure I’d even know where to begin doing those ideas.

Going to IT specialist around the corner might be a better idea in that case. 😉

However, here the best possible answer, without even knowing what kind of computer/configuration you are trying to retrieve the data from.
(I saw XP, but it also depends who/which company installed it.)

You would boot from a CD and end up at the desktop — that is, if all went well.
Then you would see what is on my screenshot and proceed with clicking on:

                        Menu/Applications/System Tools/SpaceFM

SpaceFM (Space File Manager) would open and show what’s on my screenshot.
On the left hand side, you would probably be able to see your OS HD.

Anything loop, swap and such you can ignore.
What’s important for you is sdasomeNUMBER.

sda stands for the 1st Hard Disk, sdb for the 2nd HD, sdc for the 3rd, sdd for the 4th and so on.

The number behind those first three letters stands for the partitions.
Since I don’t know how your HD is/was formated, can’t tell you more.

Normal Windows 7 installation would have 2 partitions, the first one being around 100MB in size and the other all the rest.
Windows XP normally has only 1 partition.

Some manufacturers include their own recovery partitions and if this is the case with your computer too, then you would have 2 partitions in XP and 3 in Windows 7.

100MB partition in Win7 you can always ignore — you’d want the biggest one, so very probably sda2 or sda3.
In your case of XP, it’s sda1 or sda2 (if there is recovery partition installed).
Again the biggest partition is usually the one that contains your data.

Your CD with antiX should show as sdb and some number.
                        sr0 is a CD/DVD drive.

Thanks noClue, but my version doesn’t have the quick links that you show. To find ‘messages’, I have to go to ‘Change your settings’ and down to ‘messages’ chat shows nothing, and there’s only one message in there, from the member I’m trying to communicate with. It only shows his message to me and no others. and that’s on this laprop! I still haven’t got the antiX installed on the old D610, becuz it screwed everything up, no grub, no startup with F12, no nothing except a bunch of readouts that continue to go on and on (no rhyme nor reason) until I shut the laptop down. I have a Win7 install that came on that computer, I just used gparted to make the M$ partition smaller so I could make a swap partition and one for the antiX. I’m going to download a new version of antiX – hopefully ‘testing’ if it’s available, and then try again after I check the md5sums. If that dowsn’t work, skidoo gave me an idea about changing over to testing from a regular antiX install. (I wish I’d known that before I wiped out my antiX on that laptop.)
                            Thanks

BobC, although I do try to “pay attention” and “pass along links/info”, I’m not a developer, just a wannabe-helpful (and sometimes loudmouth) contributor / peer.

From paying attention, I can tell ya that just about any “github” link related to antiX is outdated.
Swapping “gitlab” into the URL you posted,
we can notice that some of the files there have been updated as recently as 2 weeks ago

I had the impression Hierax_ca is trying to work it without using the mouse, but I could be wrong.

IceWM has a built in Cascade option, but I prefer 4 quadrants and maybe a center zoom window. Many of my windows are full screen unless I am copying and pasting from one to another, in which case I use the WinGrid to move them to quadrants, and most of the time I use the trackpad mouse if I can. If I get too many windows going and really need them, reorganize the desktop by moving some to different workspaces based on which I will use together.

One thing that could be done, but not easily would be to calculate what window already exists in the area you want to move the window to, and swap that window for the active one. It might work for quadrants, but if the windows were not quadrant sized, it would get tricky to code because that is going to happen.

I wrote 2 WinGrid-like functions for this to replace builtin IceWM functions that only allowed a single key mapping because they were in preferences not keys, and the Center-Zoom which is something new/different that I had written as a Brief macro for my PC in the late 80’s under DOS before windows came along.

The new IceWM comes with much nicer keyboard mapping, so maybe the default keyboard shortcuts help will no longer be needed. That would save needing to create, store and display files in other languages.

Hierax_ca, if you can sell us on the concept of what you were asking for in #6 in terms of what will it do to make the desktop better for people, and any example of something like it that already exists, or if not, then maybe a video with voice or text explanation of you doing manually what you are asking for the program to do automatically for you…

I found this for XFCE. I downloaded the code and will see what it does.

                                # ./winfuncs.sh tiletwo # after running this, click two windows. they will tile side-by-side. (suggested xbindkeys combo: Mod4 + c:23) (c:23 is the ‘2’ key)

                                # ./winfuncs.sh cascade

                                # ./winfuncs.sh showdesktop

I’d like to use this HP for a WEB TV Studio box to allow:
1.) Video Production with +/-4 WEB Cameras.
                                  2.) Video Editing.
3.) Video Storage for download or viewing over Internet.

A stripped down version of Linux seems to be the best OS without any “MS-Office” style – WEB Browser – Email or other typical installed software. The BOX has only two jobs – make videos – make them available for download or viewing . THAT’s it nothing else.

                                  With that in mind:
                                  A. Which version of antiX is ideal for the bare bones OS AND
                                  B. What linux based software is ideal for making/editing videos?
                                  C. How do I wipe/clean/erase the corrupted 17.2 version of antiX off
the hard drive and load/install the recommended version?

                                  Thanx Dawgs,
                                  PFO
