I erased the HD on the old Dell D620 and started fresh with a 9 gb antiX boot, 4 gb swap, 30 gb for isofiles, and 100 gb for persistence.
I loaded and installed antiX-17.3.1_x64-full, then used my packagecomp and added all my packages, and installed aptik and aptik-gtk.

Note that I didn’t restore my home stuff or my changes yet, so the system is pretty clean at this point.

Next I will restore my /home and then make another snapshot, and then create a live USB of it, do a frugal install of it with persist_all, and then I will try to overlay my changes…

@BobC: If the total available size is 15 GB, then redistribute the file systems you’re using a bit. 4GB is needed for swap unless you do not use double the size of memory for your swap partition (but that can affect hibernation and suspend operations. Perhaps you can increase the home partition by 1-2 GB and subtract a small amount from the root so that it all fits, or if possible, grant 20-30 GB, then enlarge the space of root and home. Then you should have plenty of room.

For what it’s worth I have a 10 GB partition on my hard drive and I’m only using 25% of it (except perhaps in the middle of in-memory updates that add disk space temporarily). I’ve used moderate-sized root and home partitions when I’ve run live. Big updates can fill up volatile memory in such configurations; more than likely that is where it is actually having a problem. 2 GB isn’t a huge amount to easily handle big in memory package updates.

Ok, i tried the frugal with persistence route tonight on the Dell D620. I gave it a 15 gb partition and gave 8 gb of that for root persistence and 1.5 gb for home persistence. I ran out of disk trying to install my package list which was 321 new and about 100 upgraded and was 490 mb of package downloads. The machine has 2 gb of memory and a 4 gb swap partition.

I had planned to put my changes in the gz file skidoo and bitjam were talking about.

My only idea left to go that route is the install to hard drive add my package list do my aptik install and restore of dot files, and then make a new live USB from it and then do a frugal install with persistence of that, and put my changes in above it to load at boot. I could always backup my home stuff with aptik, and would create a script to update the boot time overlay of changes and run it anytime I made more changes that I wanted to make permanent.

          Any thoughts or suggestions?

            antiX-17.3.1_386-base frugal installation:
When booting into the rox-icewm desktop, I intermittently get the message in the attached image. When I get this message the desktop looks normal most of the time. Once, most of the icons were missing and I had to Restart Session.

asus eeepc901 … netbook has two ssd inside, first one sda 4Gb and second 16Gb

We get 2 problems here. The first problem is Asus, very well renown for often ‘going their own way’, to say it polite. The second problem is, you have exactly none SSD and you don’t have an HDD neither. You have some sort of ‘better SD card in a special card reader’ to say it easy way. eMMC is not SSD.

On your place, I’d make myself extra work to probably save myself a lot of time on trying and fiddling around.

YUMI can make you (under Windows) a multi-boot pen key (USB drive). Put Gparted (standalone), DBAN, Clonezilla, antiX and Linux Mint XFCE on it first.

              1. Fully overwrite your both ‘SSD’s (with 0 is a standard way, if you know how to, you could do it with 1 too, to reduce wearing) in DBAN.

              2. Initialize both ‘SSD’s with DOS/MBR in Gparted.

              3. Create partitions and format them with Gparted:
              For sda 4 GB:
              1. 1 GB /boot (EXT2)
              2. 2 GB /swap (SWAP)
              For sdb 16 GB:
              3. 8 ~ 10 GB /root (EXT4)
              4. 8 ~ 10 GB /home (XFS)
During install, choose NOT to format them — you already did it.

              4. Install antiX first and see what gives this time — if you can put the Grub on sda or not.
Or, install Linux Mint first to test if it will let you choose sda for Grub (it should).
Which install to try first you must decide. No risk — no fun. 😉
However, if one install fails, repeat the steps 1 ~ 3 before making another try.

              5. Clonezilla for the backups whenever you want — before you start, after you’ve done it or in between …

              That should actually work.

If it fails, there could be another (complicated) thing to try: use LVM, merge 2 ‘SSD’s in 1 (one) single volume and try installing with /boot, /root, /home and /swap all in one (merged LVM) partition. Theoretically, there is only one option left for installer (sda), to install the boot loader in one and only drive that it can find, since there’s only one (LVM merged) volume and that way Grub should land on a right place automatically.

However, I didn’t try to do it in practice, so I can’t tell how the installers would interpret the existence of only one single drive and partition, consisting of two physical drives.

I am trying to set up a basic firewall and as usual do not know what I am doing. Using antiX Control Centre > Network > Manage Firewall I find the firewall appears to be inactive. If I press the unlock button the status changes to “on” but if I then close the firewall after seeing some basic filters it appears to turn off.
If I select Help from the Firewall window all I appear to get is a File Manager window opened at root. Here is the beginners info requested:-

If I could get to some basic help pages that would be useful but no Documentation or on-line help appear.
Grateful for some guidance when you have time please.

Hi, I am new here. I’ve recently installed antiX as a guest in a virtualbox VM. I’m very impressed with how quick it is but have a strange problem with sound quality.

The sound quality in general seems lower than “normal” but every 30 seconds or so it gets quite distorted for a few seconds. I’ve watched one of the antiX help videos all the way through with this pattern repeating throughout. The same has happened on other sites.

I have searched for antiX sound issues and have not found much other than a general issue that the sound levels are low “out of the box”. I found how to fix that (adjustment to pre-amp in alsamixer. It helps to go full screen to find it on the far right)

Thanks in advance for any suggestions

Host computer is fine. I can run it with installed Lubuntu with no problems. It’s HDD is visible.
I’m running Antix off a usb stick.
To my limited knowledge it seems that the OS has mounted the HDD but the FMs can’t see it?

Antix is a lot faster than Lubuntu on this 12 year old old computer. I hope I can get it as I want it. Also the portability of running from a usb stick is very appealing potentially useful.

                      Thanks for the quick reply.

As I said, that took some time …. I just hope it was worth it to tell you what might be the problem with it, since each time I tried to configure it, a dialog box came up and it said,
The selected network interface, eth1, is already configured. Would you like to configure, remove or cancel setup of eth1? Naturally, I chose to reconfigure, as you directed.

                            Hello,
so far I am pleased with AntiX, although the wicd network manager kinda sucks. Anyway, I have a problem, and that is that there are only qwerty layouts for czech keyboards, and no qwertz (which 99% of czech keyboards actually use). Not a big issue, I just need to run two commands that swap Y and Z. I have a .sh script containing the two lines of code, and I want to run it every time the computer starts. I tried putting it into /etc/rc.local and /etc/init.d/, to no avail.
Is there some special way to do it in Antix? The ways I listed before work fine under Mint and Raspbian.

ver 17, fully updated on an ACER travelmate. Why does boot try to swap the names for eth0 and eth1?

There is supposed to be a file with a name like /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules which keeps your network names consistent across boots. Is that file there? It *might* have been moved to somewhere under /lib/. I think this file is created and updated by 80-persistent-net-generator.rules.

guess you “moved” with the first installation

Not sure what you mean by your question.

This is a first installation of Heather Heyer on this laptop, overwriting Berta Catheres 16.3 to try and fix boot hangs. Not entirely successful but better.

I am in an area of Madrid with many visible networks, 2 available to me with passwords. eth0 is wireless interface, eth1 cabled ethernet and not used. Sometimes on boot I see a message advising the names have been swapped unsuccessfully, name already exists. Usually the default network is then not connected automatically, I have to do it manually with Ceni.

This is not a problem really, more a curiosity. I know very little of networking, just enough to get by.

When a name exists it can’t swap them so network connexion then fails. Easily fixed with Ceni but why? I find Ceni very useful to fix network connection problems and Wicd almost useless, I can rarely even see the list of networks detected. Any comments? What am I doing wrong?
