In October, 2018, I installed antiX 17_386 on my Dell Latitude D 600 laptop. At the time, the 4.10.5 kernel was in use. Today, I thought that it would be better to have he 4.9.148 kernal because it has been patched. The new kernel is working fine, but the computer still defaults to the 4.10.5 kernal so I have to manually select the 4.9.148 kernel each time that I boot.
        Two questions:
Is it best to use the 4.9.148 kernel?
Is it possible to get it to default to the 4.9.148 on booting or do I just need to remove 4.10.5 kernel?

Dell Latitude D620 laptop with antiX 22 (64 bit)

I have an Antix 16 server, that runs Cups, Samba, MySQL and Bacula. I want to upgrade this to Antix 17, but the server is too critical to simply install the new version, so I thouight I would take a snapshot, install the snapshot on a Qemu/KVM vm and could test the upgrade process, update the repos and dist-upgrade. I upgraded my laptop from 16 to 17 using this method, so it seems succesfull. My first attempt with antixsnapshot failed, when booting the iso, it couldn’t locate linuxfs. The only change I had made to antixsnapshot.conf was to change the file locations from the default. I discovered I had not update the “exclude” correctly and had failed to include a 900G filesystem, not sure why that made a difference but it seemed to. My second attempt with antixsnapshot generated a snapshot with linuxfs, but now I get a message about missing /live/aufs. isosnapshot is not an option, there is no X on the server. Any ideas?

            Hi,

AntiX 17.3 (x86) is one of the few distros that is still willing to run on this (very) old and a bit exotic hardware.
The Via C3 is i586 compliant, but lacks the PAE instruction set.

I’m reinstalling this board as the respinned CentOS 6.8 has outlived its usefullness, and is no longer supported in anyway.
I was using this board as a IP-PBX server, and in order to protect my data a little I have 2 30GB 2.5″ drives in there that were partitioned: 1GB Swap, 27GB Linux Raid and both 27GB partitions were then lumped together in a Raid 1 drive, on which the system was installed.

Is it possible to do something similar with AntiX 17.3?
Currently I have burned the netInstall version on a CD from which I’m booting, but getting another version would be no problem …

            Sincerely,
            Jurgen

                Interesting behaviour !!!

Now that I have things working I have been paying attention to what Conky is displaying as to memory usage. I have been mainly using Firefox just to see how it behaves on antiX. What I have noticed is that the memory used pre and post Firefox session seems to indicate that memory used by Firefox is not being free-up.

Here is what I see at the terminal,

                          IBM NetVista X41 all-in-one desktop (2002):
running AntiX 17.3.1 Base with Testing/Buster repos and the latest LTS Kernel 4.9.148 (2019-01-04) as a dual-boot with WinXPsp3.

I’m so thankful for several things that AntiX offers:

                          – it still runs off of a CD since many really old computers like this won’t boot from USB and this one can’t even do a DVD! only other way to install this would be to put the hard drive in another computer first and install from there and transfer the hard drive back!

                          – the fast PaleMoon lightweight web-browser for Pentium IV for that step-up from Dillo and Links2 when more features are needed without the bloat of FireFox.

                          – an up-to-date 486 LTS Kernel for ancient hardware

Testing/Buster repo to have more up-to-date software, and to get IceWM more fully functioning with WorkSpaces

antiX-cli-cc and cli-aptiX for getting so many useful and fast terminal/console apps (e.g., mpsyt)

and so much more, but for old single-core 32-bit computers (that were for Windows 98se – Windows 2000 – and early Windows XP) AntiX is hands-down the absolutely best fully featured Linux distro around — my continuing appreciation and admiration for the accomplishments of the AntiX team and community — THANK YOU all!

Are you suggesting that I write a bash script called “swap.sh”……

No, my thoughts were much less complicated
                              Open control-centre, go to session
then open “desktop session of user”
this will open geany and the startup-file
There you can write in the
                              /usr/bin/setxkbmap -option caps:swapescape &
                              command
Close and save, logout/in or reboot.

I put the command at the end of ~/.profile, however, that was a good suggestion skidoo, so I tried it, but it still doesn’t work. At the end of ~/.profile I put:
                                /usr/bin/setxkbmap -option caps:swapescape

It still fails to execute the command and make the change. After adding the full path as above, I tried restarting the session, and even rebooting hoping that it would be triggered, but nothing.

Caprea, I’m a little unsure of what you are suggesting so I didn’t give that a try. Are you suggesting that I write a bash script called “swap.sh” with just that command in the script file and put it into my ~/bin folder and then put “~/bin/swap.sh” into my ~/.profile file? I could try that if that is what you mean.

Possibly you added that line near the top of ~/.profile, earlier than the PATH declaration line. If so, full path may be necessary
                                  /full/path/to/setxkbmap -option caps:swapescape
