Perhaps this is by design, but maybe I’ve encountered a bug.

I’m a vim user and so I like to swap the function of my Caps_Lock and Esc keys. This is easy to do with the command “setxkbmap -option caps:swapescape”. This command works as expected when I run it in the terminal, but I would like to to do this automatically when I start Antix 17.3.1 from Persistence All on a Live USB.

I have “setxkbmap -option caps:swapescape” command in my ~/.profile. In Ubuntu based distros this command get run when I log into a session once because it is in the .profile. This does not seem to happen when I log into Antix. I know that Persistence All is working because all of my additional apps are installed, and my .vimrc file is kept and works as expected as well. So I know that Persistence root and home are functioning as expected.

Any thoughts on why this isn’t working to have the command in ~/.profile?
Is there a better way I could run this command that would work in Antix 17.3.1?

      Thanks for your help.

        Hi Roland,

From your screen shot it sounds like a disk problem since it only
happens on activating the swap partition.
“the ata1/dma read error” is gsmartcontrol installable on version 16.
Or you could try it on version 17.2. I’ve had that happen on my dell
before the hdd quit totally from read errors. Also I think Gparted
lets you check a drive if not mounted.

          antiX-17.3 (Helen Keller) released

This is primarily a point-release upgrade of antiX-17.2 (Helen Keller) with a newer L1TF/Foreshadow and Meltdown/Spectre patched kernel, a few bugfixes, updated translations and some upgraded and new packages.
The major change is that we now offer options for LUKS encrypted root, home, and swap partition at installation.

          More here

At the moment, iso files available from sourceforge

Note: There is no need to install this version of antiX-17 series if you are fully dist-upgraded.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

That Debian Kernel is not listed in the package installer page, they are versions 3.16. There is no 4.9 listed, so I chose the latest which is the one I already have, thinking it may have had a minor change not reflected in the version number. Installed ok and the first cold boot did not hang. Back home I’ll try antix17.2 if I can download it. But I’ve had this with 13.1, 13.2, 16.0, 16.1 and 16.2 so I feel it’s not kernel related. My PCs are all old slow cast-off as I’m just an aged pensioner these days not prepared to spend E1500 on something up to date. I always follow the installation screens to the letter using GParted. If I find Windows on I shrink it to a minimum serviceable partition and create an extended partition with the Linux swap and 2 ext4 logical parttitions inside. No reason, just seems tidy. I have a feeling it’s something caused by my own setups.

Thank you for the quick reply.
I am currently on a stick of a different distro (embarrassed).

But here is an inxi -v8 from an ealier topic in this forum. May be this will help already.

This has annoyed me since I began with Luddite a few years back.

The boot hangs after the display ‘setting default keymap’ and occasionally after ‘activating swap’
which comes next in sequence. This is an occasional hang, at times more than occasional.

There is always a getout, switching off and repeating switchon and boot sometimes works.
Sometimes pressing ‘enter’ instead of awaiting the default menu line selection works.
Sometimes selecting the special options line and selecting one of the next menu lines works.
But at times it’s a pest to get past.

It occurs on Luddite and Berta Caceres, all sub releases, and on 32 and 64 bit issues.

PS I have to use english UK language with spanish ES keyboards, but have observed the problem with
english UK language with english UK keyboard.

Any suggestions for a workaround or fix will be gratefully received.

It’s ok, Modicia isn’t for me, not cutting it down, just like MX isn’t for me.

Well, they are using exactly the same amount of memory for the same things, on the same HW. The difference is only, that Modicia is highly optimized and it preloads everything you might want to use but, are not using just yet. This makes it much more responsive then MX.

That is the comment I want talk about.

The “preloads” idea is what I want to understand. I see antiX includes zswap loaded and comes with zram available but not implemented, but maybe you are’t talking about that. What did you mean by “preloads” and if you know, how is it implemented?

                    Thanks…

So lack of ram does not figure into this laptop running 32 bit antiX. Only reason it is 32 bit. The hard drive came out of a older single core 64 bit laptop with no copious amounts of ram in it. This install is now years old since 2015. But it is current.

Now for the bad on what I am posting. You have MB of updates if installing 15 . Mine has been upgraded slowly and normally since I slapped this drive in here.
But the initial physical install of drive and powering on this laptop?

I pulled in 250MB of updates to bring it up to date. Using sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Having run this distro for years. I am finally getting the hang of accepting or denying the package maintainers version when it comes to /etc changes.
You will probably ask. But that is for later. After a successful install.

You will also notice the AntiX 15 in my readout even though I have dist-upgraded for years. Because? We like to know what you started with.
That is all. No biggy for me. Should be no biggy for you.

How to Search for AntiX solutions to your problems

                      Anonymous

There are many things one could try, it is only the question of how much one knows and how much time one is ready to invest.

In this case, knowledge might be the limiting factor as we could see on update / upgrade / sources understanding.

Possibly easiest way would be to take the HD out and put it another computer, install it there and swap the HD again but, that is also without the warranty that the same problem we started with, will not reappear.

I really do not see much sense in not leaving it as is, with 16 installed.

It works fine, is still supported, so what is the point?

rokytnji- I have discovered the sse2 “Problem” @ Chromium already, and yeah Pale Moon runs pretty good, though Firefox has a better framerate playing videos. both run about the same memory usage, so its going to be a question of taste I suppose. As far as Facebook, or online shopping, the PC fits the bill fine, if a bit slower than it was running Wary Puppy. Though I have to give Kudos to the development team for the easy to use Wi-Fi interface. This PC was basically frankenstiened from 3 PC’s which is how I ended up with “So much” RAM and odd components. I really miss the P2’s cartage motherboards, they make CPU swaps super easy. In this machine I had a 333 Celeron and a ATI 4mb card, both which went to storage. Though I don’t know enough about the video driver to understand what if any benefit having a decent card has on video quality…suppose I could test it.

(I don’t know why, but every time I edit my post, it disappears)

I replaced BIOS with MrChromebook, MX 17 works on it although without sound.

But antiX would be more suitable for this weak laptop. I can’t get any antiX to even boot from live USB.

                            I tried:
                            – 17.2_x64-full
                            – 17.1_x64-full
                            – 17_x64-full
                            – 17.2_x64-base
                            – 17.2_386-base
Same with latest mx 18.1 beta all give me the same error

First I see: Error: unknown filesystem, press any key to continue

Few seconds later or it I press a key, I see asci like boot menu, no graphic, no F options at the bottom, there are two boot options (none works, screen just goes dark and stays tat way, cant switch to TTY, third option is memory test and if I choose it, i get another error:

Error: disk ‘hd0 msdos2’ not found

Interestingly, MX 17.1 does bot and I managed to install it.
But new beta MX 18.1 is acting the same as all 17 antix versions.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Specs:

My guess/hope is, since MX uses antiX base and since MX 17 works, maybe I can get antiX on it too somehow

I replaced BIOS with MrChromebook, MX 17 works on it although without sound.

But antiX would be more suitable for this weak laptop. I can’t get any antiX to even boot from live USB.

                                  I tried:
                                  17.2_x64-full
                                  17.1_x64-full
                                  17_x64-full
                                  17.2_x64-base
                                  17.2_386-base
Same with latest mx 18.1 beta all give me the same error

First I see: Error: unknown filesystem, press any key to continue

Few seconds later or it I press a key, I see asci like boot menu, no graphic, no F options at the bottom, there are two boot options (none works, screen just goes dark and stays tat way, cant switch to TTY, third option is memory test and if I choose it, i get another error:

Error: disk ‘hd0 msdos2’ not found

Interestingly, MX 17 does bot and I managed to install it.
But new beta MX 18.1 is acting the same as all 17 antix versions.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Specs:

My guess/hope is, since MX uses antiX base and since MX 17 works, maybe I can get antiX on it too somehow
