    In reply to: Laptop Battery Status

      @iznit,

      unfortunately my battery is broken. Your (conky)code works only in english.

      @christophe,

      thanks for xbattbar. I did not know that yet. I made the bar a bit wider because otherwise my eyes don’t see it.

      BTW, your images stay small after clicking. I can not see it.

      xbattbar -t 8 -p 1 -I gray -i black -O purple -o red -c left &

        Do you think xbattbar would be what you’re looking for?
        After installation, add
        xbattbar -t 4 -p 1 -I gray -i black -O purple -o red -c right &
        to your startup file.
        (Click the images below to see it better.)
        First image shows battery dischaging – red bar on right.
        Second image shows battery charging – blue bar on right.
        Obviously you can designate where the bar is displayed, top/left/bottom/right.

          I’m not sure its a battle worth fighting, but if you look in aapm.cc and aapm.h you can see the locations IceWM is getting the values from to identify which aren’t right. The question, of course, is why did it get loaded wrong, there. You might look at how other battery monitor programs such as acpi and xbattbar get the data, as well, but again, I’m not sure this is worth the effort given that its only wrong from inside a virtual machine and the correct value is also easily found.

          I see it doesn’t like me adding the source for you. Its available from the web or repos if you want to go to the trouble. I have it because I wrote a “Low power alert” script at one point because I had an old laptop with a flakey battery.

            There are several ways already posted in the forum/the old forum archive. There is a search function for the forum and the old forum archive under the “forum” menu. Ways include xfce4-power-manager, batti, conky, battery tray icon, xbattbar, etc

              xbattbar is very old and was initially designed to work with apm (Advanced power management) which was designed in 1990s. Computers now use acpi for power management and that is why you got the error message. To use xbattbar with a modern computer it needs to be used with the -c option. So you should write

              xbattbar -c

              instead of just xbattbar. I wrote up a mini guide to xbattbar in the link below. I hope you find it helpful.

                the traditional ‘recalibrate’ can’t be done here.
                the battery is drained completely but laptop still thinks it 100% so it DOESN’T charge and so I can’t do a charge cycle.
                3rd battery in a month time with the same issue.
                It started when installing Antix. I don’t know what to think of it.

                  As far as resetting the capacity, the instructions I used in the past were to run the battery all the way down to absolutely nothing, and then make sure by trying to power it up on battery a couple times, and then boot it into BIOS setup, and leave it on the BIOS setup screen until the battery is fully charged, then reboot and run the operating system once the battery is fully charged.

                  Xecure’s ideas above sound good software wise. I run xbattbar and it works on all of mine. I think its in the repos, but I tweaked the one I’m running to feed my conky.

                      BobC – Thank you for the code for your xbattbar. I’ll work through it… and may do little experimentation.

                      Meanwhile, as you suggested… Here is what’s running. I understand some of it… but I don’t see whatever monitors the battery.

                      root@antix-eeepc:/home/my3epc# ps_mem.py -s

                        My lowbattery alarm is running from a script, run from the conky, not from xbattbar. My mod to xbattbar was to provide better output to a log file /tmp/xbattbar.log that could be parsed by the conky-battery.sh script without needing to focus the mouse over the bar. I sent the revised code to the maintainer, asking for him to consider including it, but never got a reply, I don’t think.

                        PS: I am not a Linux coder, so my code is not likely optimal, lol, and I’m open to constructive criticism if it shows me how it should be done better.

                        ${if_match ${battery_percent BAT0} >= 1}${execi 10 lowbattery}${endif}${endif}${endif}${endif}

                          BobC – Thanks for the xbattbar info. It looks like it provides similar info as the existing icon on my Taskbar… although you have configured xbattbar to trigger alarms.

                          I guess I would be satisfied with the Conky color bar graph… if acpi would read in 1% increments. (Perhaps the 10% steps are a limitation of the eeepc?) The color change is sufficient alarm (no audio needed).

                          Of course, Conky is sometimes covered by open windows. So, the small battery icon in the Taskbar is a backup.
                          Does anyone know what program is behind that icon… and whether it might be configurable (eg., for color change at low level)?
                          So far, all I know is that it is toggled on or off by a line in the Preferences file (TaskBarShowAPMAuto=1).

                          Also, do you know what config file might set the alarm level for the existing low battery warning LED (adjacent to keyboard, not on screen)?

                          The eeepc bios settings are pretty minimal. Unless I missed something, it looks like Power Monitoring is either on or off.

                            I run xbattbar. I modified xbattbar to improve the output for conky to grab. I also have a script to popup and sound a low battery warning, which was an idea fron Dave.

                            If you search for xbattbar you can see my setup and that mroot originally posted the idea.

                              Ahhh, that’s very cool… So here are the packages I actually added to the core install. And if one didn’t want ksnakeduel or aisleriot, for example, it wouldn’t drag in their dependencies…

                                I finally did a build up from core, I used IceWM and roaming WiFi. I did it on the old Dell D620. I should be able to get memory used to about 65.0 mb. I’m at 71.0 mb now, but that’s using Xterm and 5 getty sessions, no Conky, no Background. I just wanted to see if I could get it to work…

                                I didn’t have major problems. The worst problem was getting X to run when not root, needing to add 2 lines to /etc/X11/Xrapper.config.

                                allowed_users=console
                                needs_root_rights=yes

                                I will see if I can get the history and a memory readout next time I bring up the browser. I suppose its not totally realistic with no conky or screensaver, but it was quite an adventure to get it loaded and get X windows to come up and work.

                                So what did I install on top of core? I use a program called comm to compare the antix install list to a current list, and what wasn’t there in core is listed here. My notes say I should (ie untested at this point) be able to process add list onto a core install with:
                                xargs -a pkgschgd.add.txt apt-get install`

                                Too bad I haven’t been able to figure out how to port ksnakeduel to a non-kde environment. It really brought a lot in with it. But I like playing it, oh well.

                                Menus are working, but many programs aren’t on them. Haven’t investigated that, yet.

                                I don’t like the standard theme, wish I had my rollup shade windows, oh well.

                                Anyway, for one evening’s work I did fairly well…

                                Anyone know a way to take this list and remove from it all the packages required by any other on the list?

                                  Ok, My conky has been cobbled together over the years. Its not perfect by any stretch, as I don’t actually know much linux stuff, just learning as I go. A good example being that /tmp doesn’t need to write to the disk. So here is a pic of it in its current form, and the conky code itself. I’ll put the scripts it runs in a tar file…

                                  PS: something that I realized, my xbattbar is modified to be able to output a file for the script called by conky to grab the latest value from, and the maintainer never never replied, so I need to come up with a way to distribute that for the battery section to work well. I’m also changing the scripts to use files in /tmp when files are used.

                                  I tried to fix the image so you can see the whole thing, but it posted a 2nd picture instead of replacing the first one. Oh well, if anyone knows how, delete both and I’ll try again with an even smaller one….

                                  I added the tar file. You need to have xget, curl and xbattbar, as well as conky installed for this to work. My xbattbar programs (source included) are compiled on an _x64 system, but I don’t know if that matters. Someone like Dave or Skidoo that know what they are doing should look at my code before you guys try to run it, as like I said, I am no linux guru, and can barely tread water. That means I tried, but no warranty 🙂 Ok, the website won’t allow a .tgz file, so I have renamed it to .zip to try that. If that works, you will need to rename it back to .tgz to unextract and install it.

                                  Sorry, I would remove the pics and try smaller ones, but can’t figure out how…
