https://www.linuxlinks.com/ is a generally helpful site when it comes to Linux software.

I happened to spot a useful post today that is likely to be interesting to people interested in powerful, efficient software.

      https://www.linuxlinks.com/100-awesome-must-have-tui-linux-apps/

Check around their page; not everything will suit antiX users, since we want to be lean and efficient, but it’s sure interesting to see so many different applications, all of which are FREELY AVAILABLE!

          Thank you very much.

          You’re welcome Marcelo.

Remember, some of the programs they mention will work GREAT with antiX and others may, and a few WILL require a different user environment; for instance, while the “TUI” programs look pretty efficient in most cases, some of the programs in other categories may require the use of either the KDE Plasma or the GNOME desktop, so if you look outside of the TUI, be careful to understand the per-requisite requirements before you install anything new.

That said, they discuss MANY very interesting programs indeed!

            Great link. Thanks Brian.

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

Thank you, Brian. Some ones that I’ve not reviewed.

Thank you, Brian. Some ones that I’ve not reviewed.

Yeah, I have had that site bookmarked for a long time and I’ve still managed to miss quite a few of those handy tools.

In days past, I probably would have rushed out or stayed up half the night to install and test many of them, but at this point in my life I’ll probably only try one or a few of them if I actually have a need, but I’d like to at least mention ONE app that I spotted during my time on their site today.

It’s called NeoMutt. That interested me right away, because Mutt is a classic Email client that is STILL maintained; see http://www.mutt.org/ for details. It’s not super fancy, but it is incredibly powerful AND fast, and I was surprised to find that it’s been recently updated: “Mutt 2.2.10 was released on March 25, 2023.”

                https://neomutt.org/ — “What is NeoMutt?

NeoMutt is a command line mail reader based on Mutt.

                It’s versatile and highly configurable.

It has lots of new features which come with documentation and sample config files.”

Apparently Neo Mutt DID get the attention of the Mutt crew and now both seem to be actively maintained!

                Here’s more: “Why?

                Reduce duplication
Get patches in a state to be accepted upstream

Many hundreds of Mutt users have taken the time to patch Mutt to add features. Unfortunately, it’s usually the same patches as everyone else and effort is wasted.”

                https://neomutt.org/guide/intro

“NeoMutt is a small but very powerful text-based MIME mail client. NeoMutt is highly configurable, and is well suited to the mail power user with advanced features like key bindings, keyboard macros, mail threading, regular expression searches and a powerful pattern matching language for selecting groups of messages.”

I’m telling you guys right now, if you happen to be on the geek side of things and you want a powerful Email client; well, if you use Webmail it’s probably not necessary, but if you use a local Email client I guarantee you that Mutt or NeoMutt will be faster than Thunderbird or SeaMonkey mail, or Evolution, or even Claws.

You may have to put a bit more into it if you want to have attachments, rich text and other stuff, but the time spent will be worth it; I’ve used Mutt in the past and it was definitely FAST at a time when computers had a fraction of the speed and capabilities of what we have now.

That said, if all you use is Gmail or Yahoo Mail like I do now, importing them into Mutt or NeoMutt may not be worth your time unless you are much more of a geek than I am!

                  Great link. Thanks Brian.

You’re welcome; it’s full of interesting software; some of it even fits our “lean, efficient” style! 🙂
