im thinking of getting a new desktop i5/8gb ram
what version of antix do you reccommend for 8 gb of ram, 32 bit or 64 bit? obviously i want to be able to use all 8gb of ram
i heard the talk about pae, being a mess, but im afraid of 32bit linux stuff not working on 64, i tried before to add 32bit architecture in 64bit and failed
proprietary/closed source binaries, stuff like counter-strike (linux native, 32 bit)

is there any disadvantage or noticeable performance drop on using a 32 bit vs 64 bit os , on 64b bit capable hardware ?
does anyone here run 32bit os on 8gb ram, share your experience
      thank you

        Hi!

I’m kind of newbie at this stuff, but all I’ve read online points to tho the fact that 32 bits OS tends to use less RAM to perform the same tasks… But with 8 gb of ram, I’m betting that would not be a problem for you…
Now about running 32 bits apps on a 64 OS, I did had to do that a while ago, I googled and found the solution (sorry I’m not sure how I did it). I can point to several solutions:
On a old post I read something about installing “ia32” and “ia32-libs-gtk” to allow 32 bits apps on a 64 bits OS. Those files are no longer available to install via apt-get…
Also, if you are installing a deb file, you can use “sudo dpkg -i –force-architecture packagename.deb” (I’m almost sure that’s the way I did it before…).

Good luck, and please, do post the solution to your problem here, if you manage to find it!

Chrome-Browser which I don’t use in AntiX because I own a chromebook. May be the only sticking point you may want to consider. Since Google-Browser is only 64 bit now. Depends on personal usage. So again. Up to you.

these days if I am using a 64 bit capable CPU, then I use a 64 bit OS. I use 32bit where I have to. It works really well on my eeepc netbook for instance (2gb ram)

certain things aren’t available on 32 bit, like google-chrome and skype.

and antiX should have multi-arch enabled by default already.

Most of the newer more model programs at geared to 64 bit. Slowly the computer market has gotten away from the 32 bit cpus and even now it is harder to find a computer/tablet that does use a 32 bit processor.

The same thing happened years ago when the market went from 8 bit to 16 bit to 32 bit onto 64 bit. The older processors dried up as everybody geared to the newest technology. It is nearly impossible to find these older chips out there, even on Ebay.

                Hi:
a bit off topic… Ĩ found out my notes on running 32 bits on a 64 bits OS…
Turn on MULTIARCH for the desired achitecture:
                sudo dpkg –add-architecture i386
                sudo apt-get update

                Install dependencies:
                sudo apt-get install libc6-i386 libglib2.0-0:i386 libfuse2:i386 libxrandr2:i386

After this some 32 bits applications run fine, some don’t run at all, some may run but need even more dependecies…

I was stuck w/the “legacy” 32bit version for a long time (after upgrading from 4G to 8G) until I got a new hard drive, then installed the 64bit version, and I think the 64bit version is much better! (better supported by the kernel devs and all, etc.) and now I can see all 8G, whereas before, I could only SEE 4, even though all 8 were being used (as individual programs, such as my memory-usage dockapp) can only see 4gig in 32bit version! I wouldn’t install 32bit for a fresh install now, since 32bit is going the way of the dinosaurs! Also, Chromium (and pbly. more pgms in future, have DROPPED 32bit versions!)

                  Regards,

                  Jim

32 bit plus a pae kernel is ok to see and use 8GB of memory.

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

                      Here is a story.

I just bought a another chromebook that needs a recovery usb made. So using search skills. I stumble on

                      Use a Linux computer

On the Linux computer, download the Recovery Tool here: https://dl.google.com/dl/edgedl/chromeos/recovery/linux_recovery.sh
Change the script permissions to allow execution with the following command: $ sudo chmod 755 linux_recovery.sh
Run the script with root privileges with the following command: $ sudo bash linux_recovery.sh
Follow the on-screen instructions to create recovery media.
Continue recovering your Chromebook by following the steps above.

The above is to make recovery usb using AntiX 32 bit or 64 bit. It don’t matter. So I pick line 72 if I recall. It is for parrot c7 a,b,c,d,f. Line 71 is parrot c7 e. This is a command line type of application with no gui. Kinda sorta like a AntiX cli install. So not being real sure yet. Since I don’t have the bought chromebook. I pick the version with most model choices. abcdf. If I am wrong. I can rinse and start a new cycle. This was all done on my 32 bit IBM I5 16 gig ram AntiX laptop.

But. Just to cover my bases. I next break out my newly installed AntiX 64 bit Chromenet book. Same model basically < but maybe a different series > than the other one I just bought.
I figure I’ll install Google-Chrome browser and use their app to make my recovery usb. So after the install. I go to the app in Google-Chrome browser. Hit launch the recovery application button on the page.

Sorry. This application does not support Linux computers

The only reason for me to install Google-Chrome browser as far as I am concerned. But it does not support me. If I want to use skype. I got a android phone for that. I have not tried using my phone yet. To try and make a recovery usb using it’s version of google chrome yet . Mainly because I need to buy one of those little plugin < otg I think they call it > to usb adapters where you can plugin in a usb stick to your phone.

                      Maybe they support android.

So no advantage for me yet running 64bit vs 32bit.
                      End of story.
