4.4 kernel has reached EOL (End of life) upstream from kernel.org.
This means that the latest versions available in the antiX repos (4.4.0-296-antix.1) will be the last.- This topic was modified 1 year, 2 months ago by Brian Masinick.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

::Very sad. Both of the two ancient laptops I use remain functional thanks to 4.4 kernel. How to deal with it?

::You’ll have to use the latest 4.4 in our repos and hope there aren’t any serious security exploits from now on.

I agree. All my laptops, which are pretty ancient too (in signature below), run brilliantly with 4.4 – less resources (e.g. RAM) used than with the other kernels & fast too. Oh well – maybe it’s time to bite the bullet and finally switch to kernel 4.9, rather than risk security problems with an unsupported kernel …

::what sort of differences in RAM are we talking about? Say between 4.4 and 4.9
The ISO that Xecure built at the time with 4.4.0-264 kernel idle RAM consumption remained at around 70.5MB for the Rox desktop- IceWM.
The 4.4.0-296-antix.1 kernel is the only one that can start graphics mode with the SIS and Via video cards that we have here in Brazil. It will be a great loss for all of us, because increasingly forced obsolescence of technology is advancing very fast and so is e-waste.

what sort of differences in RAM are we talking about? Say between 4.4 and 4.9

::For those who are affected by the End of Life kernels, make certain that you keep backup copies in multiple places for the kernel or kernels that work for you, and if you have any other ways to access systems, I recommend securing them as best you can; otherwise there’s not many other ways, if any, that we can offer to help, unless there are individuals who have newer hardware, software, and services that they can donate to you. Unfortunately most of us are also here because we no longer have great access to resources either, so please do what you can NOW to keep your aging systems and services available and working.
Blessings to all!

::4.4 kernel helped me to overcome serious problems that I hadn’t managed to overcome while using 4.9 kernel. Problems such as facing a black screen every time I rebooted while being connected to the net or getting a different hash every time I ran “md5sum” for the same iso. I wrote about them here.
How can I keep a backup copy of 4.4.0-296-antix.1-486-smp?February 10, 2022 at 7:21 pm #77174Moderator

How can I keep a backup copy of 4.4.0-296-antix.1-486-smp?1) Note everything about the kernel image, such as:
a) the name; even when you copy it, try to keep the name intact, or if you have to rename it, note the original name; when you copy it back, use the original name
b) the location of the image (directory); put it back there
c) the exact file permissions, when you put it back, make sure you use the same file owner, group, and protection mask2) Copy the image to a separate location, (maybe an external drive, multiple drives, cloud storage, whatever you have available.
3) when something happens and you want the image back, use one of the copies you’ve made and the locations, protections, etc. to put it BACK precisely where it was.
Does that help?

::All latest antiX 4.4 kernels will still be in our repos.
They just won’t get upgraded to a newer version since kernel.org isn’t supplying any new versions.Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.
