::Right now I have four computers capable of running antiX. The first is about five years old; it is a Dell Inspiron 5558 with 8 GB of memory, multiple core processors, etc. and it’s more than enough to run not only antiX, it can still handle systems with full desktop environments (KDE, GNOME or XFCE) and applications. When new it was downright fast. It’s not fast, compared to newer computers, but it’s fine.
An older HP desktop in the 5000 series (probably inherited from Compaq Computer, an acquisition of Hewlett Packard, has a really nice monitor, but the CPU and memory are not quite as plentiful as on the Dell. It’s plenty to run antiX however. Another HP laptop has a hinge between the display and the keyboard that is starting to come “unhinged”, but it has plenty of resources to run antiX too. Finally, a really rugged, business quality Lenovo X201 laptop, which I believe is approximately the same age (or in the same design era) as my Dell Inspiron 5558; this one easily handles antiX.
Your model may not be as powerful as any of these, and it’s been quite a while now since I had this next system, but I once owned a 2000-era Dell Dimension 4100 desktop. When it was new it was one of the favored desktops of its time and it was a 32-bit unit, but by the time I was finished using it around 2009-2011 it still worked but was no longer a “powerful” system for that era. One of the last distributions that still ran well on this unit was antiX. From 2007 until 2015 I had Gateway 2000 and Lenovo 3000 laptops, both 32-bit. Just before sending them to a recycling location antiX was among just a few systems that would still run in 32-bit mode and it ran well on both of them.
Though these computers are not the same as your system, they spam about twenty years worth of various generations of systems and antiX always ran flawlessly on each of them; I hope this is confidence inspiring; there is a very good chance than antiX will work well in your situation as well.

::Hi @cherith_reddy,
Welcome to antiX Linux.
If your processor is Core 2 Duo T5470 – 1.60 GHz, then it means that it is two or three generations later than Pentium 4, from the example mentioned by @Xecure.
As you have 1 GB of RAM, I also recommend using the 32-bit version, it will consume even less RAM memory than the 64-bit version.
If you are a beginner in this “Linux world” that I have been calling “the world of Linux distributions”, I recommend using the full version (antiX-19.3_386-full.iso).
If you don’t want to go through a long testing journey, like I did, check out this topic: https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/system-requirements-for-antix-and-other-debians/, we share our experiences in using or testing other Linux distributions. Before arriving here and being very well received, just as you are being recreated, by these colleagues who have a gigantic experience and patience of the same size, here you are welcomed.
If you need help preparing a bootable USB flash drive with antiX Linux, see the topic https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/como-criar-pendrive-inicializavel-usando-o-ventoy-2/, you are at language Brazilian Portuguese, you will need to translate the text into your language with the help of an online translator or the translator of the internet browser itself, if your browser has this feature.
If possible, share your experience on the topic I mentioned.
See the topics created by our colleague @PPC that are of great help to new users of antiX:

https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/dica-que-versao-do-antix-instalar-32-bits-ou-64-bits/
If your language is English, you will find much more help material available, videos and tutorials, unlike what happens for the language I write, it is very difficult to find material in Portuguese.
Good luck!

https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/dica-que-versao-do-antix-instalar-32-bits-ou-64-bits/
Se o seu idioma for o Inglês, você encontrará muito mais material disponível de ajuda, vídeos e tutoriais, ao contrário do que acontece para o idioma que eu escrevo, é bem difícil encontrar material em Português.
Boa sorte!

::Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E4500
here, we had 2 machines with that CPU running antiX ~~ one had 2GB 800MHz RAM, the other had 1GB 667MHz RAM. linux 3.10 kernel as I recall. Increasing the amount of memory did not provide a noticeable benefit. Swapping in higher frequency memory _did_ provide a noticeable (but not dramatic) benefit.

I have seen similar experiences more than once and the general rule of thumb when resources are starting to decrease is to add memory (unless you run out of disk space). That said, of course if all resources are tight, improving all of them can help performance, but I agree with your observation; adding memory is more likely to produce an immediately obvious change at the least incremental cost and modification.

::antiX flies on core2duo computers. Even with the 1 GB RAM. I have found that the main issue on some older computers is that the processor has a hard time keeping up while using firefox. But the core2duo should work very, very well. But with 1 GB RAM, you’ll have to be mindful of how many apps are running/how many browser tabs are open.
A tip: upgrade the RAM to 2GB (or more), if you can. Price is probably very low. I recently bought a 2GB RAM stick for a core2duo for $10 on ebay (new). (Just make sure it’s compatible with your make & model.)

::Hi cherith_reddy
You have a nice little computer, If at some time you are able to do so, upgrading memory as already
suggested is good for improved usability, adding an SSD a further huge improvement. Keeping the HDD
for storage using SDD as system drive. You can manage with 1GB memory and light usage.
under Utility in the antiX installer you have a one click hosts file ad block setup utility.
Ads and trackers load your system without being useful, for you that is. -
