      Hello,

I am French, I’ve been using Linux Mint for several years and I like to try other distributions in virtual machines.

I wanted to recycle an old 32 bits PC from the 2000’s with barely 600 MB of ram to give it away.
After eliminating the ubuntu derivatives, the latter no longer offering a 32-bit version, I tried to install the distributions known to be light, including Zorin Lite, Bodhi, emmabuntus, debian (DF), but it was very slow, unusable.
Then came the turn of Antix. And finally, this computer can run properly, I am delighted!

Thank you very much for your work put at the service of all,
      Thanks “anticapitalista” 🙂

Congratulations also to the French translation team, it’s really very well translated, without English residues in every corner

I re-found antiX when I felt that Manjaro was a little bit slow in my mini-laptop (Acer One happy). antiX has improved a lot of recently it and seems to work fine in every computer. 🙂

          Hello Mia.

Welcome to Antix Linux and the Forum.

I don’t know how to write in English and send my texts translated by the internet translator. I hope you can understand everything. If your native language is not English, please translate my original Portuguese language text in Brazil directly into your language with the help of internet translators that you will get a much better result.

Regardless of your level of knowledge about GNU/Linux, I recommend you read these excellent tutorials created by @PPC:

What is antiX and how to try it out or install it.
Short essential how-to list for the complete Linux newbie.
          How-to install applications – 2020 version.
How to: correctly use antiX forum.

When I started using Antix, I read the tutorials that the PPC created, these readings spared me a lot of my time and I think it saves the time of any new Antix user. Your time will not be lost with these readings, it will seem to be much easier than you could imagine. You will not waste your time with internet searches or even create new topics, on the contrary, you will earn a lot of time from these readings. I recommend you try the work areas that have “ZZZ” in your name. I usually use the “ZZZ-Icewm” or “ZZZ-JWM” or “ZZZ-Fluxbox” (each of these work areas have their own characteristics and consume more or less resources). ZZZFM will be the default file manager in your desktop, it is very similar to other file managers from other GNU/Linux distributions and Windows XP. To access the other Antix work areas, click the Antix menu (or right -click), desktop, switch between desktops and click on the work area name, instantly to desktop will be loaded.

Whenever you need to request technical help or support in this forum, explain in detail what is happening, do not save the words, be thorough when writing, enter the characteristics of your computer, such as the brand and the model. If possible, post the result of the command $ Inxi -zv7 of the terminal, copy and paste here in the message of the topic you create in this forum.

When you start a topic or participate with a post, remember to check the option “Notify Me of Follow-Up Replies via email”, marking this option, you will receive a message in your email box whenever there are answers from topic in question.

What is antiX and how to try it out or install it.
Short essential how-to list for the complete Linux newbie.
          How-to install applications – 2020 version.
How to: correctly use antiX forum.

            Cher Mia,

antiX 22 Configuration & Theming [Step by step]

            Wallon

            Dear Mia,

We are happy to have one more user in the antiX community.
Thanks for the compliment on the French translations. It’s not easy because the menus are small and you can’t put comments to explain things.
Moreover, on our forum, the names of the applications are always in English. If we translate the name of the software, the users cannot find directly the software to use.
I invite you to watch a very good video on Youtube. It is in English but you can activate the French subtitles. It’s an antiX fan who gives tips and tricks.

As a reminder, antiX is not a desktop environment. It offers 4 window managers (fluxbox, iceWM, JWM and herbstluftwm).

            Best regards,
            Wallon

Thank you all for your welcome 🙂

I don’t know much about Antix, I only tried it a little bit in virtual machine.

I installed it on my old PC from 2005, which I did not want to throw away.
I have to give it away this week.
I’m very glad I installed Antix on it, it’s the only distribution of all the ones I tried that is so smooth with so little RAM.
Also, the 32-bit architecture has been abandoned by many distributions.

I joined the forum only to congratulate 🙂

For myself, I use a much newer 64-bit PC with Linux Mint Cinnamon installed, I’ve been used to it for several years.

Thank you however for the links you were kind enough to recommend.

I really like the philosophy of Antix, and as soon as I have a little more time, I think I will install it in dual-boot next to my Mint to discover it more.

              Have a good day.

              Mia

I’ve brought new life to at least four systems recently and 3-4 more over the years.

Nearly ten years ago now I custom configured an old Dell D620 laptop with antiX and found out what few things my own mother would do with a computer and I set it up for her.

One day she somehow pressed the alternate boot and ended up on Windows, I think it was XP. She couldn’t figure anything out so I showed her how to make sure she started antiX, just turn the computer on and wait and it would go into a simple setup with 5 or fewer visible selections.

                It worked!

I did a similar thing with a neighbor’s computer, interviewing them to understand how they used it and provided their system with similar clicks directly into what they used.

Such things are even better than the simple stuff we’ve created recently when the people using the computer only use a dozen or fewer apps, tools or programs. If all they do is read the news and visit one or two online stores the setup is trivial. Anyway for anyone who is putting together something for a person who barely understands the computer, the fewer things they have to hunt for and the simpler you make it the better their experience is.

If they ever really want more, then it’s easy to remove the simplified interface.
