After having unsuccesfully tried several Linux OS for my ancient Asus eeepc 4G (they are all too big,and it accepts only 32bit), I found antiX-net and downloaded it. After four times starting all over all seemed well: I managed to install the OS on my laptop (username=’as’) but now it always goes to ‘as@antix1 $’ and gets stuck there. I searched the internet and found several interesting information on youtube – one Italian (which I don’t understand) suggested ‘cli-installer’ and after doing this it downloaded hundreds of lines, but when starting the lapop it even now always returns to ‘as@antix1 $’. I am still hopefully looking for information on how to correctly answer alle the Yes/No and other questions for the right installation. So I would much appreciate a detailed list of thing to do (Grub on MBR or Boot? -root partition: sda- or where ? – locale : all or which? console layout No or yes version config? pending upgades? fontscale ? etc.) and what to answer in order to get it going? On the antix site I did not find what I need. Eg. the information on http://download.tuxfamily.org/antix/docs-antiX-19/FAQ/index.html is still much too complicated for me. For this laptop I only need a simple OS to go on internet and play youtube + a simple wordpad…Hopefully someone of the forum will find time to help me out. Thanks. Newby from Antwerp.

What are the specs on your machine? Why select antiX net (that has no graphical environment) instead of the base edition?
If you chose the terminal (non graphical) edition consciously, what reason made you chose net install instead of the core edition? The core edition brings firmware for wifi and other devices.

If you are lost because you are not sure what to chose or where to go, let me know and I will try helping you choose the edition you need. Are you installing from a CD or USB device?
How much disk space do you have available? Are you planing dualboot or only one installed system? Or maybe you are planing on running antiX only from a USB device (no disk installation)? Do you plan to only connect through ethernet cable or are you planing on using Wifi adapter?

If you want to read a bit about the antiX editions: About antiX Linux – Editions
If you want to understand a bit more about the Live boot session: antiX Live System – Live Bootloaders

More information is needed for us to understand what you need and plan and help you achieve it.

I re-read your post, and you already installed antiX net. So you don’t need to do anything else than install a Graphical environment, correct?
You can choose many different desktop environments or window managers (those are what sets a graphical environment). If you don’t mind using the default antiX system, I can help you set it up.
Does your keyboard layout work properly (when pressing all keys, what appears on screen is what you see on your keyboard)? This is important for continuing with the installation and transforming your terminal based installation to a fully graphical installation.

Anyway, let me know about your machine (mainly RAM, Disk space and CPU) and I can help you better choose what you need.

Thank you for your comprehensive answers. I’m not very sure though, that the only thing I need is a graphical environment…as my laptop now always after startup and login displays the coloured text ‘as@antix1 $’ , and it stops there… I do not t know what to do next….The default system would of course OK for me: as I I said: the use of the laptop is very limited, but I ‘d hate to discard it. The keyboard works properly. The Asus eeepc has only a very limited Ram: less than 3G now and I take it that now the antiX
OS occupies nearly all of it – that is why I was glad to have found antiX: it never said that the memeory was too small. My machine initially came with a SD-card of 4G, but I think that after its many different tries, not all of it is still ‘usable’. CPU is Intel Celeron M 900. Thank you very much for your help. I’d be very grateful to be able to continue using it, be it for a very limited use. M.

wow! It really is a very small system. I found the general manuals here (in case you want to download and read it):
              English: https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/EeePC/EeePC4G(701)/e3555_EeePC4G_XP.zip
              French: https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/EeePC/EeePC4GSurf/F3683_EeePC_XP_UM.zip
              Dutch: https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/EeePC/EeePC4GSurf/DU3683_EeePC_XP_UM.zip

For 4GBs, you did well installing from net. I don’t know if we will be able to get a graphical interface working, but we can try.

my laptop now always after startup and login displays the coloured text ‘as@antix1 $

This means it boots to a terminal interface (not graphical) and logs in automatically to your account “as”. From here on we can continue installing components and try to get the graphical interface working.

When possible, connect your left Ethernet port to a router and try updating the system. Write this in the terminal and run it by pressing the Enter key:
              sudo apt update
It will ask for your password, which you created during installation. Write the password and hit Enter again.
See if the machine can connect to the internet. If it can, you will see that it is downloading package information. This is good, and we need this to be able to continue installing components.

First, I will show you the main terminal based tool you will use to download and install components. Run
              sudo cli-aptiX
Pay attention that the final X is capital X (cli-aptiX).
This cli program you can navigate with the arrow keys and you don’t need to write too much.
Move the arrow keys and press enter on the option “View a list of 165 suggested GUI packages”.
Hit enter again to view them all, and use the Down arrow key to view the list of installable programs.
This is simply a list of most used programs for antiX, where each program has a corresponding number used to reference it for installation.
When you want to install a program, you look for it (using the up and down arrow keys), remember the number beside the program, press the ‘q’ key and write the number of the program you wanted to install. It will ask if you want to mark it for later or install in that moment (better install then so you don’t forget).

I don’t know if you have the same numbers as how I see them, but you will need to install (to test if you can get a graphical environment to work):

              Graphical server and drivers:
              148) xorg
Window manager (for menus and windows)
              145) icewm
File manager (to navigate folders and open files)
              46) rox-filer

This is the minimum you need to test if you can launch a graphical environment. Install each of them, one at a time, and when you are done, exit cli-aptiX (by pressing ‘q’ to quit the program once or twice, maybe needing to press enter to confirm).

You should have returned to the terminal. The next step is just to test if the system is able to start in a graphical environment.
              Run in terminal:
              startx
If everything goes alright, you will see a simple, kind of ugly, graphical environment. See if you can move the cursor with the trackpad and try clicking and see if things move.

Let me know if this worked and we can keep building the system little by little to get a workable environment for your eeepc computer.

                Hi Mandefu,

Welcome to antiX Linux and this forum.

Mandefu, I don’t know how to read in English, the Brazilian Portuguese translation was confusing. Does your laptop have 3 GB of RAM or is it 3 GB of hard disk space? What is the hard disk space? What is the amount of RAM?

I couldn’t find this information in the manual that Xecure made available. I found the sites with the specifications: https://event.asus.com/eeepc/microsites/901_1000/en/specifications.html, https://www.clubedohardware.com.br/topic/477840-mini-review- asus-eee-pc-4g /, but I couldn’t be sure what your laptop model is.

Xecure, from this topic initiated by Mandefu will come an important tutorial and material for the Wiki of “how to prepare an antiX operating system from ISO antiX-19.3_386-net.iso”. I will follow this tutorial and try to reproduce it, as soon as possible, I am also interested in learning.

Mandefu, return with detailed information to Xecure, so he can guide you.

Good luck to Mandefu and thanks to Xecure.

Qual é o espaço do disco rígido?

It probably is 512 MBs of RAM and 4 GBs of disk space, based on https://www.notebookcheck.net/Asus-Eee-PC-701-4G.6745.0.html
Probably a frugal install will save even more space, but with such a limited CPU, it is better to use the minimum amount of HD. Starting from net install, there is no need for most firmware. Once we know what xorg driver the machine needs, we can remove all the other ones and reduce the amount of space they take up.

It is a good idea to have an article explaining the basics for installing a graphical environment in core, as it is much easier that what it seems. Though first we need to get the eeepc to boot to a graphical environment, and not experience what you experienced, marcelocripe, with your VIA graphics, that couldn’t boot to a graphic environment or was extremely slow.

With such low specifications and little space, ‘going on to the net to play youtube’ might be expecting too much.

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

Hallo Mandefu: Unless my information is incorrect you have internal memory and a memory
                      slot underneath your device.
According to what i have found up to max 2 GB PC2-5300 DDR2 RAM should be recognised.
DDR2 is really cheap, maybe you could try a 1GB module, if the device will really
run you will get best possible performance out of the hardware.
Plug in an external drive to save files etc on.

You can find how to change memory here https://www.manualslib.com/manual/804369/Asus-Eee-Pc-4g.html?page=41#manual

                        Mandefu,

I know you’ve gotten a lot of direction here. And it’s all good advice. But let me add this advice to the list:

Run the BASE or FULL version via live usb. See how it performs. This computer’s specs are low, but if you get good enough performance that way, you’ll know if it’s worth using.

As others have said, both the RAM and the internal storage are extremely tight. It’s do-able, but make sure it’s enjoyable, too.

If it works acceptably, then you may want to run only with the live-usb, since your internal storage is so small. Or read how to use the “frugal” method from the live-usb.

Regarding building a “basic” system up from antiX net:
My experience in building up from antiX core or net is that, you can never build a better system than antiX base or full from core or net, unless you only want to build something specialized, like only 1 or 2 applications.

This is the best advice. First see if you can get a graphical environment and Wifi working on live USB, and then we can see if there is a good installation solution. If frugal (being compressed but needeing CPU power to constantly decompress info) is the best option, starting with a base frugal install with static root persistence may be the optimal option.

Hello Xecure, thank you for your clear instructions. I was able to execute everything: update, the same numbers were available: I installed 46, 145 and 148, then statx —alas then it did not go as foreseen: these lines appeared ath the end: xinit unable to connect to server. Connection refused. And under this line: xinit server error. I enclose an image of the last screen.
In another reply I read that it was possible to always run the programme from an externel USB, or have I got it wrong?. There is a space in my laptop where I can insert an SD-card. Would it then be possible to always run the OS from there? Thanks again.

If it doesn’t upload, you can always link to a separate web that hosts the file.

Anyway, seeing that it didn’t properly boot, try as christophe mentioned and try making a USB stick boot with antiX 19.3 base i386. hopefully it boots to a graphic environment or, if needed, use the Safe Video or Failsafe option to see if it boots to a graphical environment.
