Hello Xecure and all other interveners: IT WORKS, and like I want – a bit slow; but OK. I don’t know about wireless internet connection, but its okey now. Thanks a lot everybody.

If your referring to slowness because you are running from live media (a cd/dvd disk or an usb pen-drive)- please look in the how to’s and the forum on how to run antiX in a frugal way (you can start here: http://download.tuxfamily.org/antix/docs-antiX-19/FAQ/frugal.html )- this basically copies the live system to your hard drive (taking up about the same size as the live system takes), uses the live media to boot and then loads the entire OS from the files copied to your hard drive- this is many times faster than running from a slow live media- it will basically feel like you are running from a normally installed Operating System. With a bit of work you can even do away with the need to boot from live media- again, check the forum for that ( https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/booting-antix-frugal-only-from-hdd-without-any-full-installed-os-with-extlinux/ )
This will work wonders on a very slow and low on disk space computer…

Edit: you mentioned you wanted to use the computer to view Youtube videos… The best way to do that with a very low specs machine is using “smtube”, that comes by default with antiX full, and I believe, also with antiX base, too.
In short: Menu > applications > Multimedia > Smtube > Click to “Accept” the cookies on the warning on the bottom of the page.
First, configure Smtube to use low resolution video only: Smtube’s Menu > View > Settings > Make sure that the selection resolution is no more than 360p (if the views stream too slowly, select an even lower resolution). On the second tab select “Mpv” and click “ok”.
You can now search the videos you want to see (you can paste into smtube’s search field the full address of any youtube video). this has the added bonus of not displaying any ads!

      P.

        Yea, thank you, great thread!!!

My dumb question seems to fit here. Is it easier to go antix core, then install 2 WMs and antix login(slim?).

or to install antix full, then prune ice/jwm, but add tiling window managers to the login manager?

I want either openbox or fluxbox, for when I’m lazy, tired, or frustrated. I wanna run a few tilers from there. I would really like an easy way to add them to a login manager. I’ve been trained to play with .Xresoucres, etc. then do startx. But when I break a WM, then I seem to lock myself out of the others. I’ve also managed recently to lock myself out off TTY1. Sorry to do a thread takeover. Easiest way to have fluxbox++? with a login I won’t keep breaking (Xresources.etc)

@catfopd: if you want to do it that way, starting with the Full distribution and pruning, removing and modifying the configuration is one way to go.

I personally think that there are fewer adjustments by starting with Base, change the window manager and add the applications you want. It’s pretty easy that way. It’s theoretically possible to get the system you want from any of the versions but doing it from Net or Core requires you to have an Ethernet network and quite a few system administrator skills. It’s much easier from Base or Full but I personally would start with Base. These days I make most of my antiX instances that I install from Base.

Also consider using a Frugal setup.
It’s a different environment than most of us are familiar with but the flexibility you gain from it may really grow.

Whatever you choose to do, best wishes. Don’t be afraid to try a few different methods until you find out what works best for you. Best wishes for your best personal system.

I have done both methods, and it is easier to trim the fat than to build from core. A lot of investigation to figure out the needed packages for core, but both methods work.
So, it is up to you how adventurous you are. Best to test things on a VM first, if possible, so you can then have a solid method written down.

If you are using slim and have desktop-session-antix installed, there is a command you can run to update Slim’s list of available sessions.
            /usr/local/lib/desktop-session/desktop-session-slim-update.sh
It is run every time you install something through APT, so that is how I discovered it.
