I created a Claws Mail account for my yahoo mail account. But when I click the ‘Get Mail’ button at the left of the
toolbar, it asks me to input password. I don’t remember to have typed any password while I was creating the account. Any idea what to do? Thanks.

Claws is asking you to authenticate yourself with the password of your Yahoo account. If you don’t want to be asked every time you check your mails, enter your password in Claw’s account preferences.

I’ve tried it and got an error (“connection failed)” message. The network log says “unknown host”.

Maybe the server(s) you added to your account setup in Claws aren’t correct. For the correct Yahoo server addresses, see IMAP or POP. If necessary, you can change the server(s) for receiving and sending mails in Claws Mail -> Configuration -> Edit accounts … Edit -> Account -> Basic.

Thanks, I hadn’t add the correct server. But now I added it, a “connection timed out” error appears every time I try to connect. Increasing the timeout value doesn’t help.

Now I’m trying with Sylpheed on the other laptop (Compaq). Same result (session timed out).

I received an email from Yahoo. The point is that a sign in attempt prevented, because I can’t sign in to my account from apps that don’t meet the modern security standards. If I want to do so, I can turn on “Allow apps that use less secure sign in” at https://login.yahoo.com/account/security#other-apps, but it’s not recommended.

I clicked around, waded through “Help”

                    Generate third-party app passwords

Some older third-party email apps (that do not use our Yahoo branded sign in page) require you to enter a single password for login credentials. If you’ve activated two-step verification or Account Key for your Yahoo account, you’ll need to generate and use an “app password” to access Yahoo Mail from these apps.

                    1) Sign in and go to your Account security page.
                    2) Click Generate app password or Manage app passwords.
                    3) Select your app from the drop down menu and click Generate.
                    4) Follow the instructions below the password.
                    5) Click Done.
                    6) Use this app password and your email address to sign in to your email app.

I once had a geocities email account. Yahoo gobbled up (acquired) geocities…
…and I had setup “email forwarding” so that daily digests from the “yahoo groups” I participated in would be sent to my ISP-provided POP3 email account.
When Yahoo announced that POP3 forwarding would only be available with a US$4.99/mo “yahoo Plus” subscription, I bailed.

This “app password”, maybe it is for “secure POP3, before SMTP”?

Hello, andfree. How is this going? Got it yet?

For me, setting up Sylpheed email was a little traumatic – due to “connection type” issues and “authentication” issues.

When I set up my email – to my ISP provider – it was ESSENTIAL that each email account had a password. [These days many people have more than one email account.] Then, when using Sylpheed, a password-box pops up because it is a requirement of the ISP provider (ie not my system). [Of course, in the Sylpheed settings, you can set that to an automated response back to the ISP if you wish.]

However, originally setting up the connection TYPE to the ISP was the traumatic bit. [Example: Sylpheed Top-Memu > Configuration > Edit Accounts > highlight the Account > CLICK edit button > click SSL tab > SET UP YOUR OWN SETTINGS.] Perhaps I should have checked with my ISP provider – first – as to what the connection type was. Some ISPs have it all explained on their website.

                      Hope this helps.

For the moment, my patience is not enough to go on all this. I use browsers to sign in to my email accounts. Many thanks for the help.

Honestly if Yahoo were secured everyone would know it. I enabled the option to allow less secured connection and work like this. It’s functioning flawlessly with Sylpheed.

I think the mail adress I’m using is the first I ever created, 18 years ago, but I’m considering changing for a more secure one, even it is a kind of junk mailbox.

POP or IMAP? No time and patience to test both of them, for the moment.
