      Hi,

what’s the best way to add a starter/application to the desktop?

      Thanks!

Desktop-icons can be made by opening the folder /usr/share/applications with rox or spacefm.
You can then drag and drop the whatever.desktop application to your desktop

Hi, thanks for yopur reply, but this does not work. I try to drag/drop Firefox-esr to the desktop but there’s no starter showing up. Even copy/paste it to the desktop folder has no effect….

If it is possible to have desktop-icons depends on which desktop is used.
So the next question is which desktop are you using ?

^ what he said. A good reply would be the complete output of

              inxi -v8

Just drag/drop does work on SpaceIceWM desktop but then i get some symlink on the desktop with a sort-a-like telephone icon. And when i (double)click it to start Firefox i get some weird things like i want to save it and such crap. Not a succes.

However, i stumbled upon a tool or option to copy/paste a starter on the desktop that actually shows the correct (Firefox) icon as well. The problem is that i really can’t recall that tool/option or that it was in SpaceFM filemanager or where to find it. But that worked for me!

Hopefully someone recognize this and knows how to point me to the correct way to get that last option working.

                Thanks!

Link goes to 1:10 in the video, but exactly what you’re asking “how to add a starter/application to spaceFM desktop” is presented at about the 1min 45sec mark

also, from this https://antixlinux.com/forum-archive/i-can-t-see-my-icons-from-desktop-but-i-think-i-on-t7196.html you can understand that a spaceFM managed root window contains “icons” representing files residing in ~/Desktop folder. Create stuff in that folder and icons for them will appear on the desktop and vice versa, right click spaceFM desktop and create a new item and you’ll notice a matching file will be created in ~/Desktop

when dragging from a browser urlbar fails onto root window fails to create a “shortcut icon”, we can (i think we must) manually create a new item or copy_paste_edit an existing shortcut launcher item, placing “firefox http://theURLhere” on the Exec= line

That looks like i was searching for but when i follow those steps in SpaceFM filemanager, i don not have the link at the bottom of that pop-up menu (New > desktop Application). I was looking for that option indeed but not available in SpaceFM (something to do with my setup???)

I’ll read this topic carefully. Thanks!
