I’ve installed advert-block-antix on antix19.4-core, but it’s not showing the listing of excluded websites in the /etc/hosts file – this is the file’s only contents:
127.0.0.1 localhost 127.0.0.1 X71Q # The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts ::1 localhost ip6-localhost ip6-loopback fe00::0 ip6-localnet ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix ff02::1 ip6-allnodes ff02::2 ip6-allroutersI have uBlock Origin for Chromium already installed – could this be interfering with the normal functioning of advert-block-antix?
I did try it without uBlock Origin installed, rebooted, but still the absence of any list for excluded URLs.
However, on my installed copy of antiX19.4-full, the /etc/hosts file does contain the list of blocked websites.Two questions:
– am I missing dependencies in antiX-core that are preventing advert-block-antix from functioning?
– assuming this can be fixed, does advert-block-antix auto-update?- This topic was modified 1 year, 8 months ago by mikey777.

::Hi mikey, u block will not interfere with antiX advert block. Not knowing the inner workings of the
ad blocking script I suspect something is missing in the version you setup on core.A simple fix is to just download and install an adblocking url list or lists.
Or copy and paste the hpsts url list over from your installed 19.4.September 2, 2021 at 7:55 am #66257Member

::Hi,
I did test the package is installed on my PC (‘apt-cache policy advert-block-antix’) and I performed the following search
find / -mount -name '*advert-block*' 2>/dev/null
which found several files/directories including a file containing list of files leading me to a shell script
/usr/local/bin/block-advert.sh
My suggestions are
1) to remove and to re-install the package; if that fails to modify the ‘/etc/hosts’ accordingly, then please post the output of installation and
2) to (inspect the script and then, if you find it safe,) to run it and to post the output if it fails.Perhaps, some post-install instruction failed to run the script properly.
If that’s the case, the developers should be informed.- This reply was modified 1 year, 8 months ago by sybok.

::My guess is that, when you ran the block-advert.sh program (from menus it is called “Adblock”), you enabled all lists (including the “UNBLOCK”, which is only used for clearing the /etc/hosts of all previous changes).
Please run the adblock program again and enable everything except the “UNBLOCK” option. Continue the steps and let us know if an error pops up or if the /etc/hosts(.deny) changes at all.antiX Live system enthusiast.

Thanks moddit
Following my lack of success with the advert-block-antix app, I completely removed it from my machine, and then did what you suggested above, copying over the URL list to be blocked from the /etc/hosts file in antix19.4-full to the one in antix19.4-core. At the same time, I also removed uBlock Origin from my browser (Chromium) as it seemed unnecessary to have both this and the etc/hosts file running at the same time.The strategy you suggested worked: I tested it in the browser, using some of the URLs in the /etc/hosts list —-> positive result, all were blocked

I’m a bit loathe to reverse what I’ve done to test this idea, but will try this next time a solution is needed to fix the Adblock issue. If this is the solution, it looks a lot simpler …
EDIT: I tried to check what you said on another machine running antix19.4-core, so installed advert-block-antix on it. Subsequently, I clicked on Adblock in Menu, the terminal opened & asked for root password: root password then entered, but nothing opened, the terminal immediately closing. So I’m unable to check out the UNBLOCK possibility you mentioned, as I’m unable to open the Adblock app from menu.

You may private-message one of the moderators of the forum.That’s a shame as it sometimes takes significantly longer than 2-3 days to fix a problem, and gives the moderators extra work going back to mark posts as solved…

::Hi Mikey, you wrote I also removed uBlock Origin from my browser (Chromium) as it seemed unnecessary to have both this and the etc/hosts file running at the same time.
As a hosts file only blocks sites url based and u Block allows site or global java script blocking you might be better off reinstalling or adding no script to chrome.
Personally I have a redacted hosts file setup and no script with ungoogled chromium. Less of a rescource hog and way less privacy intrusion than goog version.September 3, 2021 at 2:41 pm #66346Member

Thanks for your tip Moddit: consequently, I reinstalled uBlock Origin.
I also have Privacy Badger running too. Unsure if that’s necessary, though it seemed like a good idea at the time. Hopefully, I’m not duplicating the blocking of the same websites or scripts, though Chromium’s performance doesn’t seem to be affected negatively in any noticeable way.Also many thanks for marking the thread as solved.

::When prompted for password, the default is to enter username password not root password.
The popup message should tell you which to enter.I’ve chosen the same password for username password & root password.
I’ve done this as I’m the sole home user of the laptops that I’ve got antiX installed on.
Please let me know if this is a dangerous strategy – if it is, I’ll create separate passwords.Thanks anticapitalista.

::Hi Mikey, would definitely not reccomend to have same passwords for root and user.
Interesting that it is possible but never thought of testing that on assumption policy would prevent it.If you have no stability or performance issues due multiple addons in browsers why worry.

::@Xecure
I’ve just found out why Adblock (i.e. the advert-block-antix application) wouldn’t open in the gui. Till now, I hadn’t installed antix-goodies – so I’ve just installed it & found that Adblock subsequently opens and so can now tick all five options for download into /etc/hosts. So well and truly solved now for antix19.4-core, one way or another.- This reply was modified 1 year, 7 months ago by mikey777.
