      Hi to all,
I use Antix 17. My default browser is Firefox-esr running in Firejail, default email program is Thunderbird.

Yesterday, I upgraded the kernel to 4.9.200 (seems to work fine), and also upgraded Firefox-esr, Thunderbird and several other miscellaneous programs.

All works well… except email links now open a new instance of Firefox-esr outside of Firejail.

Prior to the upgrades, I had Firejail configured with 2 icons for Firefox-esr. One for general use, and the other for one of the “Private” modes accommodated by Firejail. I was careful to open Firefox in only one mode at a time, to prevent interaction. Links from emails in Thunderbird would open in a new tab, in whatever form of Firefox was already open. (Getting the system to work this way was a bit of a headache… I thought I had pretty good notes. But they weren’t good enough to restore what was lost.)

Following the upgrades, email links open a new Firefox instance outside of Firejail. (Meanwhile, I copy and paste the link to the URL line, rather than clicking the link.)

No doubt the Firefox upgrade over wrote a pertinent file(s) somewhere. Where would you look first?

      Thanks!

Well… There was no response to my post, so I guess others either don’t make much use of Firejail… or are about as puzzled as I was.

After wasting lots of time trying to identify the reason that email links stopped working properly, I read through similar issues at https://github.com/netblue30/firejail/issues (That seems to be the best place to find Firejail related help.)

The long and short of it is that this kind of problem is very common and can begin after almost any upgrade to browser, email program or firejail. Some on the github site suggest not using email links (between firejailed email program and browser). They say it is more secure to copy and paste the link URL into the browser URL line (the sandbox is tighter with fewer whitelisted processes). So, that is what I’m doing. Problem solved.

I usually respond. Even when I don’t have a clue about sussing out what the problem is.
Edit: I missed this thread because of outdoor construction project > carport. My bones are sore when resting.

My guess would be to poke and hope around Firejail and Thunderbird preferences and settings in a script.

But it sounds not worth the effort as it seems some apps are losing steam on keeping up with updates that break their function.

pianobar comes to mind as well as youtube-dl to show where my thinking is on this.
